The original from 1967 was my favorite UNTIL I was blessed to hear Gary Brooker sing along with the Danish Symphonic Orchestra and Chorus. Absolutely glorious version. A sad note to add, Gary passed away at the age of 76 from cancer on February 19, 2022. He left a fabulous legacy of music for us to enjoy❤️

Thank goodness, always thought it was “Miller told his tale” referred to Chaucer’s Canterbury tales, Millers tale about all human frailties.
But have been told over & over that theirs a white moth called a Miller to do with coke?

I was young when I first heard this song. Little did I know I would go through my father's old 45 records that he brought from England when my parents moved to Canada, and that would be one of the records he had.
My father gave me all of the old 45's about 15 years ago. I still listen to that song. He just passed away 6 months ago, and this song is a very emotional song for me. I will be forever grateful for that and cherish this record.
The fact that his voice is still perfect after 50 years just puts me in awe

You may know this by now, but I read somewhere that Gary Brooker not only composed and sang the original version, he also composed the orchestral and choir accompaniment in this version. Amazingly talented person. May he rest in peace, listening to choirs from on high.
He co-composed the original version along with Matthew Fisher, the group’s original organist.

Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.

I'm sure you realize now it is NOT winter's. The combination of the orchestral arrangement with the iconic song creates something quite profound and moving.
The song is about a one night stand or sexual escapade that ended bad.
Gary Brooker reminds me of Ray Charles! I surpassed the half century mark last year. I can clearly remember that song playing on a 45.
My mother loved this piece.She passed about almost a year ago. At her Memorial Service I pulled together an insane amount of pics. While the pics were showing Whiter shade of pale

Have loved this song since the mid sixties. This has to be my favorite version, since this concert took place in my native Denmark. The castle where the concert took place is located close to where both my grandparents lived, have been by there many times as a child and young adult.
First released in May 1967, this song became part of the sound track of my first term at university that summer. It's one of the most iconic songs of the era. The lyrics are considered 'psychedelic rock' in their dream-like poeticism, but, according to Gary Brooker (the lead singer) in an interview, he said it's about a break up where she's leaving him with no real stated reason. She's pale with nerves when she tells him she's leaving, and when he doesn't accept there's no reason, she turns a whiter shade of pale. RIP Gary Brooker. For those of us who were listening to you from the beginning, you will forever be missed.
Elsewhere I've read that some of the lyrics refer to "The Miller's Tale" from the "Canterbury Tales". Both explanations are probably correct.

one of the greatest songs ever written. fantastic , hit # 1 at the time in nearly every country of the world .. yes people had to be able to sing and play instruments before and during the 60's and 70's no auto tube, no gimmicks, no synthesizers, no half naked people dancing around ,,,,,and half the time the live performance where even better than the recordings ,,, just stand there with a mic and belt it out.

The song lyrics are cryptic becuase it is the rock equivalent of a surrealist painting. Many images and scenarious with pale faces. Going all the way back to the Millers Tale (1485?). Whose face would have been ghostly with flour dust, and who would have turned pale when he realised he had been betrayed, yet correctly, blamed himself.
Gary Brooker sang it and composed the original music.
While it's not supposed to be a reference to Chaucer, the "Miller's Tale" would be apt to shock a "lady".
Sad to learn that Gary Brooker has passed. RIP.

The lyrics are enigmatic and meant to be enigmatic. If anyone tells you they 'know' what the song is exactly about, they are speaking from ignorance. The meaning has been debated for decades, since the first time it was released in 1967. The lyricist was a big fan of surrealism and wrote this more as a mood piece painted in words. There's even a couple interviews where he (Keith Reid) denies his mention of the 'miller told his tale' has anything to do with Chaucer. All interpretations are speculative. Some enigmas are meant to stay mysterious.
But wasn't this performance beautiful? Gary Brooker was the only original member to perform at this music festival. What is incredible is how little his voice had changed in 40 years. If you listen to the 1967 original with a 22-year-old Brooker singing, and compare it to the voice in this 2006 recording, you'll find they are almost identical. RIP, Mr Brooker.
Of course, the original did not have an orchestra and choir lol, it straight up rocked! But his vocals here are better than '67 original. RIP Gary
I'm one of those old people who listened to this stuff when we were young, so now maybe you can understand why we view new music as crap. You need to listen to Knights in White Satin, too. There was just SO much great music being written and sung; I sure miss those days. At least I have all the greats on CD so I can listen all day to real music.

The name of the song is actually “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” (not “Winter”)
Gary Brooker’s incredible singing in this live performance matched - or perhaps even exceeded - the quality of the original 1967 recording that took place 40 years earlier.
The band’s name comes from a couple of possible sources. One of the band members in ‘67 had a cat named Procol Harum. This is Latin for “Far beyond these things”…. Personally, I think they named the band after the cat. 😁
This song and about 3 or 4 others defined the sound and the scene that was the “Summer of Love”. Unfortunately, that beautiful era only lasted about three years…. Innocence lost - marked by another outdoor concert in December ‘69 at Altamont - The Rolling Stones - they hired the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to be their “security” force - 4 people died that night.
However, great music continued to come out from the late 60s all through to the mid 90s. But 1967 through Woodstock 1969 was magic.
There has been much debate/misunderstanding regarding the lyrics. I believe I can unlock the mystery for you. The lyrics are mostly metaphorical.
The song is about a young couple who are attending a party perhaps at a ballroom - maybe even on a ship. They were either entertainers for the crowd, or they were just part of the crowd dancing….”We skipped the Light Fandango” but instead did cartwheels across the floor, implying that they were having a great time, perhaps even on their way to getting drunk. The room seem to be shaking apart as they “ordered another drink”, but the waiter brought a tray of many drinks.
As the night wore on, the young man was fast becoming interested in having a more private intimate time with this young girl…. But yet even through her near drunkenness, she sensed it, and became frightened.
As the young man shuffled through his “playing cards” - a metaphor for looking for that winning hand to convince her to go with him - she again was unable or unwilling to give into him. Even as he told her stories, and lies about himself to impress and take advantage of her she knew she was potentially headed for trouble as “The truth was plain to see”.
The vestal virgin metaphor clearly implied that she was young, inexperienced, and not ready for what she feared was his ultimate intent.
But he kept on with his tales and lies, and he “would not let her be”…..ramping up the pressure on her to give in. This frightened her tremendously.
I have heard, but I cannot confirm, that Gary Brooker and his cowriter actually wrote two more verses, that were never recorded. We will probably never hear the end of that story.
