As others stated, he wrote this song at age 19, about a girl he fell in love with from afar. A few years later, she found out that the song was written for and about her. She contacted him ..... they're still married. God Bless!

That is not the correct story. It was about a girl he was in love with who at one time had bought him white satin sheets. He was remembering those “nights in white satin” they spent together, however it wasn’t until they had broken up, that he realize what real Love was and how he had loved her and lost her. It wasn’t till later that he met his wife whom he has been married to for over 50 years.

This is one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. "Nights In White Satin" is one of their most famous, but they have had so many hit songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "Question", "Ride My Seesaw", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice", "Your Wildest Dreams", "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock & Roll Band)" etc. But all of their music is great. A lot of their records are concept albums that are meant to be listened to all at once. Their drummer Graeme Edge just passed away last year.

With Graeme's passing, the Moody Blues officially ceased to exist as an entity.
(A few years prior, flutist Ray Thomas died. This was several years after health issues forced him into retirement.)
YES sir, do yourself a favor. Put on some good headphones, tell everyone not to bother you for 45 minutes or so, and listen to any of the seven albums they put out between '67 and '72. You can thank us later.

Justin Hayward sounded just as good here, at around 70 years old, as he did back in the 60s and 70s. Such an amazing voice. And he wrote this beautiful song when he was 16 or 17, I think.
Devin, PLEASE react to Moody Blues' "The Voice." It's from the 80s and I absolutely love it. Such a great vibe.
For more like this, PLEASE check out ELO -- especially their live versions. Jeff Lynne is one of the very best singers and songwriters, hands down. Telephone Line and Evil Woman are a great place to start. Livin' Thing is one of my absolute favorites and Don't Bring Me Down is a great, jump around, feel good song.

I am just curious why Nights in White Satin was THE song on the radio summer of 1972, when it first came out in November of 1967? I remember because I was in my Junior year at Kent State University, and the album just came out, and me and a few friends of mine got together to listen to the album for the first time, and this song is on that album. I remember that evening SO WELL, as we just sat on the floor and listened to the album in its entirety without saying a word until a few minutes after it finished. We were so blown away, that we couldn't say a thing at first. I don't know, when you state it "was THE song on the radio" summer of '72.....this song had been around for nearly 5 years in '72, so it seems like it was a NEW song that was a huge hit. It definitely was all over the radio in late fall of '67 and into 1968. Just curious, but PLEASED to know that it was getting a lot or air play the summer of '72!! I LOVE knowing that!!

Great song, great band. I'm sure you're gonna want more Moody Blues after this, so may I recommend "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Your Wildest Dreams", and "The Other Side of Life". I remember buying the .45 record of "The Other Side of Life" in the 80s, and was surprised to see that the record itself, was, in fact, blue. Blew my mind! Three of the men you listed are still with us. Ray Thomas (flute, backing vocals) died in 2018, and Graeme Edge (drums) passed just last November. Another band in a similar lane that I think you would love is Yes, who were pioneers of progressive-rock in the 70s and 80s. "Roundabout" was their first big hit, but their biggest hit came in 1983 when they hit #1 with "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Both are exceptional (though the video for "Owner" is quite strange). "Love Will Find a Way" is another wonderful Yes song.

The Moody Blues co-founder and drummer Graeme Edge passed on November 12, 2021 at the age of 80😔 .They had a host of hit songs in the 60s and 70s. "Your wildest dreams " came out in 1986 (I think this was their last hit song) "Go now" was recorded in 1965 it was their first song and "The Voice" came out in 1981. Their songs are so soothing and touching. You can't go wrong with The Moody Blues! ❤🥰

A lot of young reactors I have watched over the last 3 years, are realizing that a lot of music today is not so great. They have been totally turned on to the music from the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s and some have dived into the '40s music, Classical and opera, and LOVE it. Many of them say, "I wish I grew up with THAT music, and not what we listen to now. It is so heartwarming to hear that from people who were not born yet in those decades. I was a child in the '50s and a teen to my early 20s in the '60s. I wouldn't trade being young NOW for missing the music that I grew up with.

This is the FIRST of the Moody Blues albums. Ok, not the absolute first, but the members changed, this is the most well known line up. Happy to see another Moodies fan! I've been there since 1968. I had finished telling a friend that rock music was the new classical music ,we discussed back and forth. Less than a month later, he put this album on the record player! Case closed!
They recorded this in secret, to use the new stereo recording studio. The studio bosses wanted classical sounding , they played orchestrated passages to show their progress, switching to more guitar and drums, after satisfying them.
If you really want your mind blown, listen to Threshold of a Dream!
    Headphones recommend !
As an entire album, also. (Just for FULL effect!)
There are a core of 8 studio albums.
    Have fun!

While this is a very good live version the studio version is even more beautiful.

Love the reaction! Yes, this is a later live rendition of a very early Moody Blues song. I have seen them live - without the orchestra, and they sounded great! As said many other posts, they have a ton of great songs.

Open up a Rumble channel also please? Out of all of the reactions to this song on RUclips, your reaction is the best. The others, seem almost fake. You felt it in your heart. That's a real reaction. God Bless!

60 years on. An evergreen? A classic? All I know is that this song/record and group were way ahead of their time,. For those who don't get it: turn the lights off, when it's dark. turn the volume up and just listen to the music/words and let yourselves be transported to a place where you are free and without care.

"Orchestral Rock" a symphony meets rock. Musicianship on multiple intruments was the "cache", or currency back then, before synthsizers fucked music all up. The Moody Blues were the Zenith! Trained as many musicians were back in the day in classical....like Elton John see "Blue Moves"....and Sting...but these guys were the BEST!

16 studio albums, numerous solo albums and well over 200 songs. their 1st 7 albums are all considered concept albums and should be listened to end to end. this is 1 of the best live versions but the original studio version has the spoken word in it

Some time on here or on your on listen to the album version to hear the end we all grew up on. I miss it they don't do it when it's live. All the songs listed would be great. Enjoy
