  • Kicking off this video is a wakeboard riding edit featuring Mike Rosenberg, myself (Rich Wheeler) and Edan Fletcher on Edan's 2008 40th Anniversary Mastercraft Xstar. Excellent morning of riding with basically the lake to ourselves.
I've ridden Edan's Xstar many times but after the day it had me thinking about what the best boats are under $50k. There are actually a number of boats under that price even when new boats are often $150k+. In addition current economic conditions have lowered boat prices a little but regardless you should be able to find the boats I am talking about under $50k.

Sold riding, new sub here. When that x star came out it was a game changer until the G hit. Great content!!! I'll add do this any boat that you're talking about if it makes a good wakeboard wake it will also make a great surf Wave with a surf device.

Thanks man! Yeah the G is hard to beat in the current gen of boats. I do like the Supra SA a lot too though for the wakeboard wake.

Great video, bro with great shots from all angles! In a lot of ways, the older generation boats out-perform the new generation because they were so much more reliable. Yes, the new boats have a lot of things that are more automated (no more filling ballast bags with manual pumps, surf systems to also help planing out when under load, etc) but they also breakdown a lot more because of the extra moving parts underwater & the computerization of the helm. Maintenance costs have certainly gone up with that as well. But in the end, the wakes are much better, but the question is, is it worth the significant increase in price/costs?

I think that is an excellent point. My wedge has been doing some weird stuff the past few times out. Basically slips out of lift mode into position 1, sometimes 2 when getting on plane. I think the actuator might be wearing out. It still holds in 3 when up to speed though. Going to see if I can ride it out till fall and then bring it in for warranty work. I think the newer boats are almost terrifying to own without warranty. As you said, so much tech but so much that can break. If I keep my A22 longer run, I hope I can find a good after market warranty. What's crazy there too is the complexity of an Axis isn't even near some of the more luxury boats. I'd say there is a market for a no frills to the point wake machine, but I think the hardcore rider and I'd dare say even hardcore wakesurfer are a small group. In my opinion, most new wake boats are sold for casual surf use/family outings/icons of wealth and the tech/extra stuff goes with that, especially the last one. We don't all need electric telescoping towers with mist machines, stern thrusters, tons of trim tabs, automated settings, etc but people keep paying for them. On another note, I'd love to see the 8.1 or a diesel engine in newer boats. The current powerhouse supercharger engines have a lot of tech in them too we rely on.

@@LifetimeShred I know that Nautique had a diesel model a couple of years ago (Scott Bouchard had one). But haven't heard of anyone else who had one, so maybe the added cost of the diesel engine didn't outweigh the potential gas savings & performance benefits?

Your trampoline looks wild! I have a 2015 g23 and my buddies have a 18 moomba Max, 19 axis a22 and we all love the G23 wake the best.

Yeah G23 remains the king. I’s day that or a 2016+ Supra SA. Can’t get one for under $50k but starting to see the older ones in the 75-85 range!
Yeah the tramp is a springfree model. Fun for my kids but fun for me too.

This is awesome! Great review. Seems like an excellent boat for an affordable price point. You put out great content.
I'd love to see a video on the best wakeboard boats under $10k featuring an MC Stars and Stripes or '80s Nautique 2001.

@@joshuaboyle7585 I appreciate that! That would be a fun video if I had access to them. At one point in time circa 2013 I was seriously eyeing an 80’s 2001 as my first boat. As I am sure you know, the original Super Sport / SAN210 hull was modeled on the 2001. The wood stringers scared me away but if you could find one with them redone, hard to argue there is a cheaper boat out there that you could still throw down on. I ended up saving up and bought an 03’ VLX in 2015 as my first boat.

Honestly, I would recommend a 2019 or 2020 heyday WT2. I would much rather have the newer boat with fewer potential issues. Pretty decent wake too. Sooo many people I know with these older boats have lots of reliability issues. I would also probably go with the Malibu or Axis over the mastercraft. I'm not a fan of super rampy wakes. But to each their own. But as you said, you were chasing gremlins in your older boat, and that has always been my anecdotal experience.

@@collin9085 I’ve been interested in riding a Heydey. I respect Dylan Miller as a rider and he reps them. Are they bow $50k at this point? I think with older boats it often comes down to the individual boat, how it was maintained and how handy you are with fixing things. I do think they are less complicated than a recently out of warranty newer boat though.
I feel you on wake shape. I prefer a Malibu/Axis shape over mastercraft’s ramp but I get why some people love it.

@@LifetimeShred Many of the people who bough a WT2 in 2020 bought them for 50 to 60k in the first place. So yeah, getting it for 50k and only have like 150 hours (or less) on the boat is definitely doable. I honestly think the wakeboard wake is pretty comparable to an axis.

Why not a Supra launch ?

Which years are you thinking? I've ridden a 04 22' SSV and 07 21V a good amount. Both wakes were decent but in my mind not on the same level as the 2nd gen Xstar and LSV etc of that era. Agree though it deserves an honorable mention, especially if we drop budget to the $35-40k range. Might have another video there.

@@LifetimeShredhow about the 24 ft supra? 05-10. Offers the 8.1. Currently have a 06 20 ssv. Just a little small and growing out of it as a wakeboard/wakesurf boat. Has been a great first towboat. Looking to stay in a boat that's more analog with low amounts of tech that just break. Have been looking at 24 ft launch as it's what im familiar with. Never ridden one though

@@Freydale i haven’t ridden the 24 but I imagine it builds on the 22. That said, bigger boats take more ballast to weight them down. I would join the Moomba forum and ask around there. For some reason the supra forum is kind of dead and the moomba forum covers supra and moomba - forum.moomba.com
