- You cannot own an AR-15, what do you do for home protection? I think that a lever action rifle might be the best choice! Let's talk about what accessories and ammunition to use!

Great video enjoyed this one alot.
Thanks! I really like shooting my Henry .44!
Hi John. So glad you are back. Looks like it’s warming up in Alaska.
Thanks Frank! Yeah, we are having Spring Breakup now, puddles every where.
I am a fan of the lever action guns.. I think of it as the first high capacity assault rifle..
Yeah, lever actions are great! Hey, thanks for watching!
Good day John. Nice rifle, would love to have one like that some day. Mike.
Hi Mike! Pretty much all lever actions are hard to find these days, except for .22s. I lucked into this one at a local store. I really enjoy shooting it!
Really nice shooting!! I think you're right on thy money for home defense.
Thanks, that was a good day! Appreciate you watching!
Nice meeting you guys today.
I've been looking for some excuse to get a Lever Action in .357 because I love my old revolver I think it would be great for home defense .
Yes, nice meeting with you too. I saw a Henry X model in 45LC at the Three Bears at Trump road today. I wish you luck in getting a lever action .357!
I got the ranger precision peep sight on my henry
Yeah, Ranger Point Precision seems to make good stuff! Hey, thanks for watching!
I agree that the revolver caliber levers are great choices. Can you go into the advantages of red dot sights at home defense ranges over tang sights or even open sights? I see an advantage for squirrel hunting or a long range battle rifle but not sure I understand their use in this application.
Now that is a great question! A properly mounted and setup red dot on a carbine/ lever action rifle enables the shooter to make fast hits, especially in low light where open sights may be hard to see. That is one reason that so many pistols are now mounting them. A red dot should be mounted further forward than a rifle scope. This enables the shooter to focus on the target with both eyes open, bring the carbine up, and the red dot should be on target, or very close. There are high visibility front and rear sights for lever actions that really improve iron sights for this application. That would be a close call with a red dot. I hope this helps, and appreciate the question and you watching!
Slick brass catch at 8:20! 👍 You make a compelling argument but part of the reason I got a .44 carbine is that extra power; .44 Magnum out of a rifle is 1500-1600 fpe. You're effectively shooting .45 ACP +P, which many people do use for HD. I use a 16" AR or a carry pistol for HD but would feel competent with my .44 Henry.
Have you shot any heavy, hard cast loads yet?
Thanks! It did not make the video but one can have lead subsonic and jacketed full power on the butt cuff and load what the situation dictates. I have not shot anything over 240gr yet. I will be shooting some 300-320 grain in the near future, they should be pretty good loads! Hey, thanks for the question and appreciate you watching!
Hello John!
Good Morning CW!
Thanks for sharing the info on the picatinny rail. Is that the one of the three pc rail sold for Henry’s pistol caliber rifles on their website ? It’s showing $40 l believe 5”
The first rail I used was the Henry factory rail, but it sits up about 1/2" above the receiver. The rail in the video is from Ranger Point Precision, they specialize in parts for lever action rifles. Hey, thanks for watching!
@@30-06johnThank you so much.
Wouldn't non hollow point or soft point loads over penerate whether or not you hit your target?
A hard cast SWC or JSP will usually penetrate more than a JHP. That is one reason why I was using reduced loads, a 240gr SWC at 1035fps. A full power 44 mag load out of a rifle will is about a 240gr bullet at 1650 fps. To reduce penetration more, one can use a JHP or soft lead bullet instead of a JSP or hard cast lead. Hey, thanks for the question and watching!
I bet gas checked soft swaged lead would be the bee's knees.
