Searched this song after watching an interview with Manna Dey. In that interview he remembered how he sang in a competition song against the legend Bheem Sen Joshi. Amazing performance. Ek chatur naar..seems to be inspired by this song.

This wasnt an easy one for Manna Dey to sing. Bhimsen Joshi wasnt sure about doing playback since he was a classical singer. Manna Dey wasnt sure he would be able to pull it off against a legend like Bhimsen Joshi. In the end they both created this piece of art. Hats off to both of them.

I heard directly from Manna Dey that when the music director approached him for this song and informed him he needed to compete with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, he was completely taken aback. In fact, he planned to disappear before the recording. It was actually his wife who persuaded him to face the challenge. The music director advised Pandit Ji to sing slowly and in a mellow voice because the scene required Manna Dey to emerge as the winner.

In one of his interviews Pandit Bhim sen joshi ji mentioned that Shankar and Jai kishan called him and said there is a situation of competition between two singers so you playback for one singer and other by Manna Day and create something that suits the situation. We don't know these level of classical music so you both workout something. Based on the commonly used line of "pilu...pilu.." for raag basant bahar shailendra wrote these lines. Some of the comments here are so utterly stupid that I can't decide,to laugh or cry. Have people lost ability to hear. Some idol singer is now getting compared with Bhimsenji even elevated to be better than original while possessing about 10%of his vocal ability.
