For that matter, it was Maharashtra which patronage to the musician like him. Almost all the musicians from Karnataka were acknowledged by Maharashtrian audience first. Late Padma Bhushan Dr. Gangu bai Hangal told me once that Karnataka is not a place for a musician to be a successful musician. If any musician wants to make a career in music one must go to Mumbai or Pune.

This is India, my friend. No apologies. Such performance can go on for a couple of hours. The singer maintains the beat, so do the Audience. I recall the singer starting at 11:30 PM, and we roll with the beat in rapt attention for the next 2 1/2 to 3 hours. We were in college (and 60 yrs ago).

Indeed Explosive, ordinary people would probably burst their veins out if they attempt something like this. Pandit Bade Gulam Ali Khan , Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Ganagandharva KJ Yesudas, Hariharan and only a handful of other singers from Carnatic and Hindustani origin have been able to achieve such a feet. Hats off

I wonder from the miniscule fraction of people who can appreciate this music, how many realise that the "Mohammad Shah Rangeela" in the bandish, was none other than the Mughal Emperor of India between 1720-48. Sadly remembered more for presiding over the disintegration of the Mughal Empire and the period when Delhi was sacked repeatedly, almost by whoever desired, most notably, by Nadir Shah of Iran, who carried away the Takht-e-Tawus (Peacock Throne), the Koh-i-noor diamond (Mountain of Light), the Darya-e-Noor (River of Light), and many other priceless jewels.
The "Rangeela" emperor - like most of the Mughals (except of course, Aurangzeb), was a patron of the arts and a gifted poet, musician and composer himself, and wrote many pieces devoted to Krishna, Holi, etc. from the point of view of the Gopis.
