2:12: Tom Berenger being spot on. Thanks to Tom and the rest of the cast, Platoon is a living monument. I my opinion, there will never be another Vietnam war film with such realism and emotion as Platoon.
Born in 79. I was lucky enough to have very cool parents who allowed me to watch the 80's. I am as much of a movie buff as anyone i have ever met. Platoon was truly great film making and mr tom berenger is the utter show stealer. Reality, "I AM REALITY".
Tom Berenger's character in Betrayed (based on Robert Jay Mathews) from 1988 wasn't exactly a good guy, even though I bet that some would argue against that..
Mrs. Wygant really knows how to craft her interview. I remember her as a teenager and she seemed very accomplished, now I know why - she called the shots.
Platoon is one of those movies like Apocalypse Now. You have to watch it several times to really understand it. First time through everyone tends to just focus on the action-sounds and sights-but very little on the underlying theme. Both of these were made when Vietnam was still fresh in the mind of the viewers since many had either served during that time, knew someone who did, protested against it, or viewed it on the news every day. Unlike the wars in the mid-East, Vietnam was symbolic for many Americans and there were many emotions surrounding it!
I understood perfectly Platoon when I saw it for the first time. Apocalypse is a different breed, very philosophical, while Platoon is very personal. Sure it's a bit action heavy, but in the end it was anti war, and perhaps the definite Vietnam film.
I love that they give us the raw footage with all the production stuff that they don't air in the finished video. I guess that's how you have to do it when you only have one camera.
Amazing insights about Barnes that he was Captain Ahab. Very insightful. Never heard Tom discuss Barnes. Barnes seemed pretty straightforward to understand, but he was actually complex and Berenger shed light on Barners character.
Berenger is an amazing actor. Barnes was an irreparably damaged soul. Jake Taylor was a very amicable catcher for the Cleveland Indians.....And Roger Dorn is spending his retirement from tanking plays on the field to becoming an interior decorator.
One of my two favorite War movies of all time!… Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. Showing how it was and is in War and how and what boot camp and training is like.
For me it's Platoon and Apocalypse Now. Platoon for what actually happened, and Apocalypse Now for larger than life artistic, mythological version. Not realistic, but a work of art. Full Metal Jacket however, I like the training more than the war part. As a whole, I think it doesn't quite reach greatness of the other two. The training would have been a 5/5 short film
Thanks for the upload. I always wondered how they filmed these interviews. I thought they did it twice, once with the camera on the interviewee and the other with the camera on the interviewer.
I’m a layperson. I guess the interviewer at the end is doing reaction/question segments due to the limitation of a one camera on the interview set. Reminds me of William Hurt’s crucial scene in Broadcast News.
Maybe these guys making the movie are an equal part of the guys who were actually there. Telling the story is as important as those who fought the war. It's like the cast was just an extension of the military units involved in the war and their job was to tell the story. The cast didnt face actual combat but neither did a lot of guys who deployed to Vietnam, either.
Dear lord, is this how many/ all tv interviews are done? Little creepy with her needing to fake reactions. Besides that the interviews were good except a little short. Did Berenger decline to remove his sunglasses because he said he was up all night? Lol. I appreciate his sincerity on feeling a little guilty/ out of place for getting called to a ceremony to dedicate a Vietnam memorial. That is a bit silly to ask an actor instead of actual veterans, as like he said they were mostly still alive then. So no reason not to.
But in the end he went to WV to that celebration, or not? 😅 I guess it’s also embarassing that they invited an actor who played a character extremely different from the ideal american soldier. Barnes represented maybe the brutal reality, but also a very negative archetype of war. You would imagine veterans would praise a symbol of real heroism.
He looks tired and I’d be bored too if I had to speak with that woman. Not to mention that ridiculous final part, please. Do the edit after the interview madam.
So odd because in The Big Chill he’s the COMPLETE opposite (although still an actor, lol!) in that he was a hippy rallying against those involved with the war. In other words, Barnes would’ve killed that guy/himself! 😝😝
@@Anakinskywalkerfan1who is actually the worst because you know not to disrespect his performance but I can’t think of anyone worse, that’s how good of a movie it is.

By far the best actor playing the best character in platoon
WD as Elias a close second
And that’s not even taking away from the other actors. They’re all amazing but Sgt Barnes is just too iconic
The only thing that can kill Barnes, is Barnes
Tom Berringer is amazing ~ just an exquisite, moral, real …. best actor and human being.
Damn this interview is wild to watch. The depth Berenger goes into his incredible to hear, unusual to hear today.

Both he and Defoe played against type in Platoon. Defoe generally played bad guys and Tom played good guys - even nice guys. They were perfectly cast.
Well, Tom didn't play a good guy in Looking for Mr. Goodbar.

Platoon one of my favorite films. Great cast all around.👍👍

One of my top films ever
Love this actor. All my life I had him down as the perfect Mark Antony. Probe too late now & there is no-one to take his place
Another very good actor in Platoon.
That movie is so eye opening

So strange to watch. I've never seen that before.
William Petersen was supposed to play Barnes but he declined. Tom did a great job !
an amazing actor
Let's all remember, love him or not, Oliver stone was there. He served in his capacity.
Amazing insights about Barnes that he was Captain Ahab. Very insightful. Never heard Tom discuss Barnes. Barnes seemed pretty straightforward to understand, but he was actually complex and Berenger shed light on Barners character.
Tom is a true patriot and fantastic actor...bar none!

Awesome movie, awesome performance.

God I love Barnes's character ❤❤❤
Loved that movie
Damn, the real guy talks and it’s still Barnes voice 🤯 I read Tom Hardy said he based his accent in The Revenant off of Barnes’ accent.
All I can hear is = "Taylor .. you are one simple son of a bitch..."
He is so f*cking Cool.

Love Dale Dye
Nicest person ever
Yes i agree
❤❤❤❤berenger
Some excellent insights on a amazing movie - thanks!
Thanks for the upload. I always wondered how they filmed these interviews. I thought they did it twice, once with the camera on the interviewee and the other with the camera on the interviewer.
Dale Dye is right about the smells in wartime, combat operations and skirmishes, the smell of death....gg, Tampa Florida
Imagine a 4 D movie with the smell of the battle zone. The shaking. Etc. few would make it to the end of such a film.
Berenger was GREAT as Barnes
when you only have one camera...neat that they included the background stuff
TOM BERENGER , LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR - AWESOME.
Great....old stars...GIANTS....fir me her and willem.dafoe....in platoon my warmovie favourite .
What did you find? Did you find anything good?

Staff Sergeant Barnes
nice to see Dale Dye as a young man (relatively speaking of course).
I feel like he was trying to escape reality with Elias before this interview began
Young Tom Berenger looks like French singer Marc Lavoine.

I don't get the end bit
They were shooting it for tv back in the day so it would have been heavily edited. She was just getting all the clips and soundbytes she needed
Did you see the Peter Weller one that she did? That one was pretty good too.
I Think Tom Berenger Would Had Great to Play USMC Chesty Puller, Semper-Fi.

That's Capt. Dale Dye USMC.
Is Captain Dye also the commander who calls in the napalm as they are being overrun by the N Viets?
Yes, he plays the company captain in the film.
Berenger was some creep in this movie clashing against the character of Willem Defoe among other people
Creep, as someone who seved in a US Army Light Infantry unit we would have followed Sgt. Barnes to hell.
