I also appreciate his honesty. Nowhere is it written that it's wrong to refuse large sums of money, and the idea that you're turning them down because you're worth more has merit. I don't think too many people who aren't wealthy understand that the principle of not accepting less, or too much less, than what you're worth isn't only applicable and noble when we're dealing with modest sums of money. Because in this case, if I'm not mistaken, Pacino got about 5 million, which means Duvall was offered, more or less, 800,000.

Respect for Robert Duvall. This guy seems really down-to-earth when you compare him to other Hollywood actors. And looking back now, if they had added Tom Hagen to Godfather Part III, the movie would have mostly likely been more interesting than what we got. Didn't like how they killed him off-screen as well.
Everyone overlooks Duvall in those films. Hagen's quiet and professional manner speaks of his debt of love to the Corleones. He's the one man above suspicion among men who do not trust each other further than immediate need. Vito has Hagen there to handle the complex angles, and he can count on Tom getting it done. As can Michael, who in the end sees via Fredo's betrayal that love is stronger than blood ties.

How and where paranormal correlates to this convo beats me. next and probably last. its your not you're . enjoy YOUR life. Hopefully your kids have better spelling skills than you. There is a difference between poor grammar and using abbreviations.
But Pacino was the star. It would depend on how big a role Hagen would have played in the story really. 5x isn't that bad. You don't get paid on merit. Pacino was the (secondary) title character. I bet Diane Keaton got much less than 5x Pacino and she was quite integral in Part 3. Pacino probably got nothing for Part 1, being a nobody. Brando got nothing because he had a bad rep. Apparently, Pacino originally asked for so much for Part 2 that Coppola threatened to open with Michael's funeral lol
Robert Duvall is a much better actor Pacino is a ham!! That whole "they keep pulling me back in" please he was horrible. Jeez, then he made that Adam Sandlermovie Jack and Jill with that Dunkacino scene in Jack and Jill. I was embarrassed for him.
I have to agree with Robert Duvall, the 3rd one was not nearly as good as the first two. I really love the first ones, but I did miss seeing Duvall in 3; he's a great actor and I thought his role as Tom Hague was awesome (he was the only sane one LOL)
It really is a shame. But FFC didn't have the leverage to accede to Duvall's wishes; meanwhile, Pacino is a huge movie star. But Duvall, so intelligent, is correct: the third should have been Hagen's story. I always imagine the opening scene a tired, totally fatigued, totally corrupt Hagen - they could have relied on his character from "The Conversation" as well. The camera would follow Hagen through the hallways of one of the Twin Towers, or one of those awful skyscrapers on Sixth and 48th: he's just collecting signatures, talking to accounts receivable, etc, wrapping things up for the end of the day, and his last errand is to drop the paperwork off on the desk of the CEO - and that's our setup, that's the first glimpse of Michael. Tom says good night, and Michael says - "Tom, hold on, there's one more thing." Michael asks Tom to invite his kids, and Kay, to the ceremony at St Pat's, and Tom's reaction of surprise, reluctance, and offense sets up the whole film - *that* would have been a good movie!
***** I don't think Duvall wanted the third one to be his story. That wouldn't make sense. But he was a key player who would be very important in the third film, no doubt. But not HIS story.
Paul Jesus You're correct. I didn't mean to imply I thought he did. I do think, though, that that would have been an interesting way into the story. To replace him with George Hamilton - I mean, it's not the same man who directed the first two Godfathers. But it wasn't. Let's not forget that FFC was coming off absolutely devastating tragedies. I'm still hoping for #4! There's a script. It cuts between contempo NYC and the early days of Sonny.
***** the absence of Robert Duvall was the main disappointment of Godfather 3….but I disagree with your timeframe for Godfather 4... It should cut between the early 60s, where 2 left off (think of the post-Castro/Kennedy assassinations scenarios), and the formative years of Don't Vito's family coming into power, prohibition, etc
Godfather 3 was shit. Should have been flash backs to young Sonny and Tom. Young Sonny fighting his way out of trouble. Young Tom thinking his way out of trouble.
IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE GODFATHER, (DIRECTORS CUT), YOU HAVENT SEEN IT AS IT WAS MENT TO BE... IT COMBINES 1&2 TOGETHER IN A TIMELINE AND IT IS JUST BRILLIANT....!!!

The coolest thing in III was that old assassin killing one of the twin bodyguards but positioning his body so it looks like the assassin was dead so he could ambush the brother.
I don't think The Godfather Part III can ever be fairly judged since it will always be compared to Part I and II, which are by and large considered the greatest films ever made. What IS better than those two films? Part III is not a bad film by any stretch of the imagination. It's still a compelling story with solid, multi-dimensional characters and it acts as an honest addendum to the previous parts. It gave closure to the story, something I always felt Part II did not do. If we took Part III as a standalone film, it would have been far more well received at the time and far more well regarded as the years have gone on. Whether they did it for money or not, The Godfather Part III is a very good movie.
J Hallenbeck I have said what you said COUNTLESS times. The third film should be taken as a standalone film. That's how I always took it, and I've never seen it as being anything but a solid, good film.
Part 2 ends off after Michael kills Fredo then they flashback to him sitting with the whole family and at the end it just ends up being Michael alone in the room just as he’s alone after he killed fredo it was symbolic that everyone he had was gone and that flashback was a foreshadow of those events
They should do Godfather 4, 5, and 6. 4 takes place after 3 with Vincent as the lead. 5 takes place in the 1930's to the events leading up to GF1 with Vito as the lead. 6 takes place between 1 and 2 with the events leading up to Fredo's betrayal of Michael. Would love to see another film about Michael while he's still in his prime. Of course, everyone would have to be recast except for Andy Garcia. They should do his story first.
As others have mentioned, the main issue with Godfather III is that Pacino, for whatever reason, wasn't able to revive the Michael Corleone character. I never got the feeling that it was Micheal Corleone in the movie, you had to remind yourself that it was supposed to be Michael. It was almost like when they use a different actor to play a role and it is just not the same. I wound up being pre-occupied half the time as to whether or not his nephew was sleeping with his daughter or not. Strange movie IMO.
I agree that third part was very poor . But some how the point is right. third part is not much about role, acting but point of how ending one empire such is Corleone family.sorry for my English. And one more thing, Duval is right ,he said right. He did so much in first two parts.
A crazy part of the plot in Part III, and one that I never understood was... Why on earth would a man as careful and calculated a thinker as the Don Michael Corleone, choose to put crazy loose cannon 'Vincent' as head of the family? Really?
I respect his honesty but he's wrong in many ways. But back then they didn't have the information we have now. The Vatican was actually involved with the Mafia, but not with the American one. And of course the third one wasn't as good as the first two, for one he was missing from the movie, and the fact is, you can't score 3 times on the same ''ball'' (ball being the same movie). You can't expect every movie from the trilogy to have the same success
It was totally prepared for success. It had HUGE anticipation and if they would have just remembered what made the other ones a success it could have been one as well: keep the plot simple but intense and focus on great acting. They got waay too convoluted with unnecessary dialogue with no power! Those things were what made the best parts of the first 2 endlessly watchable in reruns!
@@southsideman4891 yeah but Godfather 3 is still a masterpiece compared to so many movies, especially these days. I mean you can't even compare it to shit like dark knight or ironman or antman or any other bullshit out today. They are endless classics, doesn't matter that the third one wasn't as great.
Part three was brilliant. It’s show you how good Pacino is, although he was not at peace with the storyline. Ok, he did it for the money, but he still gave a convincing performance. That scene at the end where he cry’s at the death of his daughter. Just amazing. ❤️❤️❤️
I think there is a lot of hyperbole about how how bad the film is, but I think part 3 does have its issues. I found the plot a bit convoluted and the characterisation of michael doesn’t really match with the same Michael we saw in the first two films. The final scene is heart breaking though.
@@ck4777 that heartbreaking part is done by the Sound mixer. According to al himself. He was screaming the whole time but the sound mixer just opened the mixer just at the end. I know it takes away a whole lot of the magic but there you can see that a lot is done with sound mixing. Great job by both.
If Robert Duvall would of been in Part 3 chances are the movie would of ranked higher at the box office .it would of been fair of course he would of been paid evenly as the rest .an original good movie no matter how many years later is still even more interesting and a big hit with more of the original cast.
al pacino was a smooth magnetic actor in 1974 .. by 1990 he was still magnetic but he was kinda hoarse like paul newman and while michael aged he sounded too different
Talking about Peter Boyle and Brando. Did you ever see the SNL bit "Dueling Brandos"? John Belushi and Peter Boyle dressed like Johnny Strabler (The Wild One) going back and forth trading Brando lines. One of the funniest moments in TV history.
Duvall is a breathe of fresh air. He just seems like a straight shooter. I don't blame him for not accepting the role. He was offered $1million and Pacino was offered $5million. There weren't a lot of other big stars to have to give large paydays to in the movie. I bet he would have done it for $2million or $2.5mill.
The sad thing is, that was a good character, that was a genuinely compelling character whom one should've felt a lot for. But Coppola just couldn't pull it off as an actress, and FFC's direction of her went out. It pisses me off when a well-written character ends up so badly acted that you root for them to lose.
OMFG!!! This is the first Duvall/ Coppola/ _The Godfather_ video which doesn't have the "I ❤️️ the smell of napalm in the morning!" comment. Can anybody post that comment, please. It'll get you a lot of "👍". Which are really useful. You can buy beer and meat and vodka and potatoes with "👍".
Love Duvall's honesty here without walking on eggshells, and most definitely it's generally agreed upon by almost everyone that GF3 was not nearly as good as the first two, but from the perspective of quality of films overall released in that era and even MORE so these days, it's still a much better, well made film than most other movies out there anyway, but it's not a ''must see'' if you've already seen GF1 and 2.
In a sense, Coppola sabotaged the Godfather III film by not fighting harder for the inclusion of Robert Duvall to reprise his role of Tom Hagen; at the time of filming, Duvall had already won his Best Actor Oscar and presumably was commanding star money. The substituted casting of George Hamilton was ludicrous. The second major error was replacing Winona Ryder with Coppola's daughter as Mary; she may be a hell of a director, but acting was not her thing. The film tarnished the earlier two sagas.
III was a sin. Should have paid Duvall, with an interwoven story ala II, with the Vatican storyline in the present, and flashbacks to a young Santino & Hagen, Johnny Fontaine, Luca Brasi, Dinero as The Don, etc.. And don't cast the over-acting Andy Garcia to play an Italian.

I love love love love love love cannot cannot say enough love for Robert Duvall he is a legend
Always like his acting,,He is so good!
Robert Duvall's honesty is refreshing. No bending over backward for anyone. I like it.
Tom Hagen was my favourite character. I loved his diplomacy and wit. He would have made a better Don than Michael.
Unfortunately that would've never happened, he wasn't a member of the Corleone family's bloodline
+Mario Capo Fredo was my favorite character. Him and the slum landlord who was going to evict the old lady for having a dog.
Michael sees nothing of that kind. He is insulting and threatening to Tom in their last meeting together.
Duvall's performance in the first two was so underrated. He could have actually saved Godfather 3 if they weren't so damn cheap...
Yep totally but i wonder how the ending would look like.
is there anything as refreshing in this world as hearing someone tell the truth ? 1:05
Smart man not to be in part 3. For that matter, I don't have part three in my collection.
Duvall was missed in Godfather 3. He would have made the movie so much better
Pop had Genco look what I got....
Aw look im sorry, i didnt mean it. Listen mama made some dinner.... ....
the best part is the last minute where duvall doesn't know if he should feel insulted
+JazzKeyboardist1 He should have felt ashamed that he sat down and talked with that weasel Costas.
Robert Duvall was awesome in "Days of Thunder."
When I saw Part III, the first sign of trouble was seeing another actor playing Tom Hagen's role. It took me right out of the movie. Immediately.
But there was no character of tom Hagen in the third part
Ajmal Ks hes talking about Michaels lawyer
Yes, I was referring to Michael's lawyer.
I felt the replacement for Tom Hagen was also overacting. He should have played it cool.
The godfather 3 sucked ass.. the ending was cool but the whole thing was terrible.. the acting was terrible.. even on pacinos part.
+groomedtodie "that's so true"!
***** Its clear you're a fucking child with that poor grammar.
Godfather 3 was terrible and poorly acted.
thats a fact not even an opinion pal.
***** Another stupid ass comment " your favorite film is probably the god awful paranormal activity."
How and where paranormal correlates to this convo beats me.
next and probably last. its your not you're .
enjoy YOUR life.
Hopefully your kids have better spelling skills than you.
There is a difference between poor grammar and using abbreviations.
***** Yeah excuses if you're so grown up what the fuck are you doing playing video games you loser.
***** that is a complete lie. show me the facts.
Duvall is right. Not as good as the first two. It was almost dumb by comparison.
The Godfather Part III is a Mad magazine satire of a Godfather movie.
The godfather without Marlon Brando....Nope.
What? The second was amazing and didnt have Brando
Agree , without Brando its lower class.
I still think 2 was better than 1 and I loved Brando in 1
this is the most honest interview i’ve ever seen
Robert is so very right. My deepest respect for his honesty
the way he talks about needing heroes...so good.
@nicopc65 you really think Al Pacino is 5x better than Duvall , u make me laugh, Duvall was same level of acting in The Godfather as Pacino
And James Caan, too...
the reason paramount paid pacino the most money to do a godfather sequel is because he was the only cast member who can't be replaced
Love Robert Duvall. A great actor.
I have to agree with Robert Duvall, the 3rd one was not nearly as good as the first two. I really love the first ones, but I did miss seeing Duvall in 3; he's a great actor and I thought his role as Tom Hague was awesome (he was the only sane one LOL)
Tom Hagen was so calm and collected. And he would be huge in the third one, seeing as Michael wanted to change the business.
*****
I don't think Duvall wanted the third one to be his story.
Robert is correct, the third movie wasn't as good as the first two.
consigliere!!
Godfather 3 was shit.
Should have been flash backs to young Sonny and Tom.
Young Sonny fighting his way out of trouble.
Young Tom thinking his way out of trouble.
That’s right,Godfather 3 was like in a different time, didn’t catch me at all!!!
Sorry to tell!!!
IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE GODFATHER, (DIRECTORS CUT), YOU HAVENT SEEN IT AS IT WAS MENT TO BE...
IT COMBINES 1&2 TOGETHER IN A TIMELINE AND IT IS JUST BRILLIANT....!!!
Really? I love these movies, so I’ll definitely check that out.
thats hard to believe, 3 is a joke.
bob costas ruined his career by stopping his sports stuff, and he stopped interviewing people. He thought people wanted to hear him pontificate on gun ownership, and abortion.
good riddance to bad rubbish, bob. hope you read this comment to your 40-year-old kids, so they don't make the same mistakes you made.
+J Hallenbeck Agree.
Part 2 ends off after Michael kills Fredo then they flashback to him sitting with the whole family and at the end it just ends up being Michael alone in the room just as he’s alone after he killed fredo it was symbolic that everyone he had was gone and that flashback was a foreshadow of those events
J Hallenbeck But it could have been great.
J Hallenbeck a
Correct Mr. Duvall, Godfather 3 sucked.
Bob Costas had the greatest talk show of all time it's a shame nobody can see all the episodes today, they're absolutely priceless.
So true Duvall, was GREAT in Godfather I & II. He should have been in Godfather III, then the movie would have been great. He is a terrific actor
Duvall is real stand up guy. What a stallion.
If you love Robert Duvall in the Godfather movies, you have to watch him in the Great Santini.
.
I like all of them. And ROBERT Duval.
Great actor
He did so much in first two parts.
thank u Maurizio :)) nice to meet u 2
A crazy part of the plot in Part III, and one that I never understood was... Why on earth would a man as careful and calculated a thinker as the Don Michael Corleone, choose to put crazy loose cannon 'Vincent' as head of the family? Really?
He was good in the Great Santini and Rambling Rose as well.
6:14 - Duvall did NOT like being told he resembles Peter Boyle.
Honestly it seemed like he didnt know who he was
@@southsideman4891 I got that sense also
how can duvall
get offered only 1 mill for gf3? he is a academy award winner!
It was a poorly timed and poorly chosen comment on Costas's part
Yeah i wanted to see michael vs tom in part 3.
Tom Hagen, my favourite character of the Series even if he's in only 2 parts. Such a great character and actor
al pacino was a smooth magnetic actor in 1974 .. by 1990 he was still magnetic but he was kinda hoarse like paul newman and while michael aged he sounded too different
Robert Duvall is a very insightful and honest dude. You can just tell.
Talking about Peter Boyle and Brando. Did you ever see the SNL bit "Dueling Brandos"? John Belushi and Peter Boyle dressed like Johnny Strabler (The Wild One) going back and forth trading Brando lines. One of the funniest moments in TV history.
One of the great actors the deserved more recognition and respect!,,,,,, Just watch all his movies you will see!,,,,,
Duvall is a breathe of fresh air. He just seems like a straight shooter. I don't blame him for not accepting the role. He was offered $1million and Pacino was offered $5million. There weren't a lot of other big stars to have to give large paydays to in the movie. I bet he would have done it for $2million or $2.5mill.
I hated Goodfather part 3. I thought it sucked. The story line sucked. Worse, Sofia Coppola's sucked WORSE!!
When I went to the movies to see III......when Sophia Coppala's character was shot.....there was massive applause!
LOL and I wanted her to be good SO BAD!!
The sad thing is, that was a good character, that was a genuinely compelling character whom one should've felt a lot for. But Coppola just couldn't pull it off as an actress, and FFC's direction of her went out.
It pisses me off when a well-written character ends up so badly acted that you root for them to lose.
Dugan Fry plus when gf3 came out duvall was an academy winner already and pacino wasnt
OMFG!!!
This is the first Duvall/ Coppola/ _The Godfather_ video which doesn't have the
"I ❤️️ the smell of napalm in the morning!" comment.
Possibly the best actor of the last 50 years.
Ryder is lucky she dodged godfather part III , the script was atrocious
III was a sin. Should have paid Duvall, with an interwoven story ala II, with the Vatican storyline in the present, and flashbacks to a young Santino & Hagen, Johnny Fontaine, Luca Brasi, Dinero as The Don, etc.. And don't cast the over-acting Andy Garcia to play an Italian.
Thanks for posting this fivealex2010. I remember watching this back in '91. This was one of many great interviews on "Later with Bob Costas." If you have more I'd love to watch them. I sure miss that kind of approach to late night television: 1:30 in the morning, no live audience, no jokes, no monologue, no angry musicians, just a relaxed, intelligent and illuminating conversation between Bob and his guest. Those were the days....
He alteast he was honest about it. Coppola in fact was having money issues and decided to do a part 3 because he was going broke...it wasn't something he wanted to do. That movie feels different from the 1st two movies because the 3rd one lacked heart... Alot of the actors didn't even have a good time making the 1st two movies....it was like "aww here we go again...we gotta make another one"
