My Grandad, Bill Appleby, was the tunnel keeper and lived in the house above harecastle tunnel for over 40 years. I think he started sometime in the 60s 🙂
You two are an absolute friggin' hoot !! It's getting to the point that I can't wait until Friday afternoon for my weekly Foxes Fix !! 😎 Of course your's is not the first vlog I've seen of a boat going through this tunnel but it is most definitely the best-produced as well as by far the funniest ! Cheers to you both.
When watching your vlogs its easy to forget that you're not watching a professional program on the tv, the editing and sound is spot on. Love watching an listening to you two bouncing off of each other, keep up the good work its brilliant!
Me and my wife went through the Scarecastle in 1988 in a twenty foot cuiser , it was awesome . Loved it that much that we went through several times over a period of three weeks . Brought back great memories and has fuelled the need to do it again . Thanks guys .
Love watching you guys and I especially love the various bits of commentary, history, and other facts about the places you two go to along the canals. Do keep up the great work you two.
omg , just watching that vlog brings back nightmares of when we broke down in it , i just went into panic mode , as i saw the barge behind us catching up & did'nt know what to do as the wooden towpath had nearly all broken up , so i could'nt get off & push the boat , but the barge behind gave us a gentle nudge out , i never want to go in there again . i loved the outtakes , it made me chuckle .
when you said you going back thought the tunnel i thought you do not have to do that well I am glad you did I am glad you are telling us the history like Martin Zero you are both my favorite you tubes I enjoy the history behind the canals. Keep it up
You have now brought back another memory for me. It would have been in 1949 when I was with a group of scouts and we had an old ship's lifeboat which we used on the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals. We took the boat onto the Trent and Mersey and to the Harecastle tunnel. You mention James Brindley and he had a connection to Marple - there is a Brindley Avenue there. You also mention spooky stories and one might be from when we arrived at the tunnel - we had to wait to go through the tunnel while a group of watermen pulled a corpse from the canal just near the entrance. We must have gone through the old tunnel but we did not have to 'leg it' because we got a tow behind a narrowboat. Thanks for another memory. Alan Parkinson
The two actors playing the middleaged couple have done it again! Gorgeous personalities and amazing narrative! The editing team is world class too. I see Baftas in the future...
Another great vlog guys. Only you two could make travelling through a tunnel so interesting with your choice of music tops. Really looking forward to boating continuously when we get back to UK. Take care out there.
Your dedication to ensuring your viewers lived the tunnel experience is admirable! When you young lads moor up for a few days what is your usual daily routine (eg the dog walking Colin/Shaun, editing, cooking, etc etc)?
I know I keep going on about it but your vlogs are really well constructed. And perfect music esp for the tunnel. Excellent. Been thru several times but didn’t know about the electric cable boat. (Coincidentally Harecastle features in some writing I’m doing.) Oh and lots of fab Dillon shots too. Ta. Happy cruising guys. C&Lx
Brilliant footage again!! loved the filming through the Harecastle tunnel. Pity you didn't get a bit further south you could of given me a shout and if the wife was up to it, we could have shown you around the Potteries. Maybe next time.
Great video have you ever thought of sitting with the painted skeleton and jumping out at the other boaters and shouting " I have nobody to talk too". LOL
The things you lads do for me.? Make me smile with one of those uncontrollable smiles that just insists on coming out. Congratulations on another safe transit of Harecastle Tunnel. All hail your lucky lucky tunnel pants.
Those tunnels are eerie. The footage was fascinating and your music choice made it feel really spooky. I nearly jumped out of my skin when the ghost appeared between you 😳
Terrific and fascinating video, fellas. Fantastic and relatable narration that casually demonstrates the hard work of research you've clearly put in. You both really have a gift for this and have chosen the right path to my mind. One really has to marvel at the ingenuity, engineering and construction skills of the people involved in such ventures in the Victorian era. Britain really must have been on top of her game and genuinely world beating at the time. Perhaps that why 'The War Of The Worlds' is my favourite book. Triggered and angered by the needless and cruel slaughter of helpless Tasmanians by the British army in his time, Welles pondered what it would be like if the same happened to Britain and despite all her innovation and achievement she was utterly impotent and useless when faced by this new, exotic and technically superior enemy. A clever contemporary moral comment that still chills. I'm rambling. Your intrepidness and lust for life puts the vast majority of us to shame. Even if only for my sake, keep it up and keep us posted.
I just started watching you guys and love the history lessons and wildlife shots with naming birds. I am from U.S. and know nothing of canals except in murder mysteries and such, so this is great!! Keep it going.
Hi guys! Another great vlog! Loved it! They just get better and better. I got my copy of Waterways World and really enjoyed your article Colin. As someone who struggles with a mental illness I totally get it. You are so blessed to have someone who understands in your life as it can be hard on a relationship I know. Back to the vlog. I look so forward to every one! I pull up google maps and look until I find where your at (or where you've been). I watch every vlog several times . I'm living in Minnesota where right now it is kind of bleak. What a lovely way to start my day with a cup of coffee watching your vlog!
I love this channel! Love the relaxing lifestyle, and the views of nature, and the history of canals and regions you guys visit! I would nearly go on a week long canal tour if I didnt hate/scared of boats that much :( I do absolutely love Shauns humor! :D
I was hoping you’d get the skeleton! Scared us silly when we went through! Just found you a few days ago and boy am I enjoying it. Hope to get to UK again when normality resumes and get back on the cut!
I so want to go through the Braunston tunnel near me but now this one made me feel I would be screaming to be let off the whole way through... Great show of course, thanks
Hi guys, here am I on the opposite side of the world in Tasmania having discovered your travels couple of days ago. So I’ve watched EVERY episode (big catch up) with my 2 springer spaniels for company. I have often dreamed of doing what you do BUT I’ve left my run too late as I’m too long in the tooth now. Love your honesty and your senses of humour and great positivity. Your beautifully presented episodes from the reflections, choice of music and the very informative history lessons have saved me from having to visit. Even though given the opportunity I’d have loved to follow in your footsteps. Seeing the white swans when we only have black ones here, is just so lovely. Thanks so much. Love and cake to you both!
Thanks very much for the video! I've been following a few narrowboat related channels and watched quite a few runs through Harecastle, but this one is definitely my fave. Great quality, interesting commentary about the history, and all those little details inside the tunnel that I never really saw in other videos. Just a pleasure to watch! :)
Harecastle was my first tunnel. I did not initially get my speed right and zig zagged down the tunnel. My wife helped me calling out my way, your way, my way, your way. As we emerged from the tunnel on the north side the Tunnel guy said I was expecting Frank Sinatra….
Your vids are fabulous and of professional quality just like a TV program so well done. I enjoyed this one and your Standedge Tunnel one which was outstanding. You both gel really well on camera so keep up the excellent work guys. I have done some of the Oxford and Grand Union canals Including Blisworth and Brauston Tunnels but never gone further then that.
Well that marks the start of the weekend. Great facts, presentation and dynamics between you two - as always. Happy barging and keep safe & warm. Until next week take care. J :)
Hiya Foxes, like many here I've watched many RUclips videos featuring the Harecastle Tunnel, this one is definitely by far my favourite. Great content, editing and music. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole package and as always the outtakes made me chuckle. Keep safe and warm. Regards from Wales.
Thanks brilliant again love the geese shots so much information on the tunnel at hare castle have taken a boat through it too a few years back, keep dry n warm see you next week xx
Ok, when you were talking about the ghosts in the tunnel and you "showed" the ghost between the two of you. My dogs started barking and I about wet my pants! Then I almost wet my pants because I was laughing so hard. Love your videos and the history that you share! Thank you!
Fab video as ever - the tunnel is fascinating as you say - but all the tales of ghosts did make me laugh especially the screeching headless woman! Thank you for the entertainment! 😊😊
Keep your canal adventures coming. Touring the waterways with the two of you and the puppy is always a great experience. The vlogs are entertaining and so informative. Always look forward to the next one. I cannot watch one of your vlogs and not be in a good mood. Good work.

Hi Colin and Shaun , great scenery and information and you two are so funny , there was some kind of mist appeared for a moment in the tunnel . maybe it was the light , those tunnels are bit eerie lol x
Marvelous footage onboard the Silver Fox, and you have finally got the log fire burning two, really enjoying this.... Thanks for the revised detailed info and History it's appreciated, good Documentary.... All three of you,
Wow, nice video. Love the history of your videos. Thanks for taking us back through the tunnel. You two are fabulous, love your blogs along with the outtakes. Can't wait till next week. Cheers....
Thank you for the whole tunnel experience. I've walked trough railway tunnels that long and know the midway point can be quite oppressive. I can't imagine they managed to get horses to walk through that thing! Also, at 2:45 it's nice to see Dylan has been promoted to branch manager :)
So glad you captured the tunnel passage. Thank you! It looks rather (very!) claustrophobic at points. The portal and signage is quite spooky-looking, so no wonder the gory tales. I think I would have been glad of another boat along for the ride!
Brrrrrrrr, was I happy to be out of that creepy tunnel again, and...........I was only virtuelly in, sitting comfortably in front of my laptop; in reality I would already be dead from fear! Good video again, thanks a lot.
Those tunnels are absolutely fascinating! Martin would be made up in them . Great video chaps , really enjoyed especially the outtakes ......potty mouth🤬😂🤣🧱👍🏼
Another great vlog full of fascinating facts and plenty of chuckles ( in One Direction indeed 😜 ) Outtakes are hilarious and show both of you as genuine, honest folk. More please, once a week is never enough ooo errr missus !
The music chosen for the tunnel....absolutely perfect.
Thanks!

Thanks, William. Take care! 💙
Another Great Vlog boy's & the music going through the Tunnel was Intense, Alfred Hitchcock Style, Brilliant as always.

I love the tunnel trips! It would be cool to see a map of how the railway and canal tunnels and the mines in the hill are interconnected!
You should be able to find one on Google 👍
Great vid agan...intresting camera angles ,camera work, editing,...superb..

Simply the best narrow boat channel there is, keep it up lads.
Awwww, that's made me blush. Thank you!
You guys are great!! Love the way you capture the events. Funny, and love Shaun’s expressions! And Colin, you do such a great editing.
Aww, thank you! Have a fab weekend ❤️
Your dedication to ensuring your viewers lived the tunnel experience is admirable! When you young lads moor up for a few days what is your usual daily routine (eg the dog walking Colin/Shaun, editing, cooking, etc etc)?
Usually editing, shopping and cleaning the boat.
Another very well made and informative video. Well done my friends. Looking forward to seeing the next one. Love the history.
Thank you! I love history! 👍🏻
Always a way round doing things.
Exactly! 👍🏻
Brilliant as always. Love all the history. You should have a series on TV.
We've had offers, Valerie, but we prefer having our little channel 👍🏻
I know I keep going on about it but your vlogs are really well constructed. And perfect music esp for the tunnel. Excellent. Been thru several times but didn’t know about the electric cable boat. (Coincidentally Harecastle features in some writing I’m doing.)

Really fascinating and I am impressed of your steering in a straight line without bumping the walls 👍👍👍
Shaun's really good at that, even though as distracting as hell! 😂
You guys keep putting out quality stuff! We look forward to Friday teatime and your latest instalment! Thank you so much.
Aww, thanks, Nick! Enjoy your tea. We just had cheese on toast 😋
Loved the history on the tunnel.
I might see you....moor on the Shroppie and have a house near the Bridgewater. You can't escape🤣
Haha! Well, we may be heading that way 😉

Hi, Jon 👋
That's so kind of you. We've seen most of them and wanted to do it a bit different. I'm really glad you liked it 👍🏻❤️
Wow, kinda creepy to keep having the tunnel get more and more cramped as you go through!
Haha! Yeah, it does get a little more enclosed
Thanks for going back through the tunnel guys, you spoil us

Thanks brilliant again love the geese shots so much information on the tunnel at hare castle have taken a boat through it too a few years back, keep dry n warm see you next week xx
Thanks, Philip. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
I noticed at the end of the tunnel you had to duck under the pipe. Were parts of the tunnel that low? If so, is it easy to duck in time?
Yeah, it gets VERY low
Love the look of calm concentration on Sean as he steers through the tunnel.
You have to concentrate, lose concentration for just 2 seconds and..... BANG! 🤣
Ok, when you were talking about the ghosts in the tunnel and you "showed" the ghost between the two of you. My dogs started barking and I about wet my pants! Then I almost wet my pants because I was laughing so hard. Love your videos and the history that you share! Thank you!
