    Hey, good video sir. For my senior graduation present from high scool. And I'm 50 now, so it's been a long time ago. I got a Remington 7600 in 30-06. Old school wood and metal. I can't even begin to tell you how many deer that old girl has put on the ground. I've hunted in weather so cold that my gloves stuck to it when I picked it up. Rain, you name it. And this will really blow your mind. I still have the original Tasco 3×9 scope on it. I just love the old school look and feel.

The X on the left was my target. (the shot almost in the bullseye on the right X was my father in laws first shot after I made adjustments) The two shots circled are my first 2 shots. Then I brought it down - shot once. Then brought it over to the left. From there zeroed it in to dead center. This all was from 25 yards out. Follow instructions carefully when mounting the scope. So far I'm very happy with the purchase.

    I have a Tikka T3x Superlite in .308. The most important recoil issue with Tikkas is the butt pad. It is a very poor butt pad, because it is too firm. I purchased an aftermarket Limbsaver recoil pad at a fairly steep price ($35), but it has turned the recoil from noticeable and something that stings after 10 shots, to nonexistent.

      The difference a Limbsaver makes on a 300 WSM is astounding. It is night-and-day different, especially on a bench. Unfortunate that Sako/Tikka refuse to acknowledge the pads they send out the door are woefully lacking.

      A little surprised about the comments regarding Tikka and recoil. I stepped down from 30-06 (Weatherby Mark 5) and 7mm Rem Mag (Sako A5) to 308 Win in a Tikka T3 superlight for me and I also picked up a Tikka T3 light compact for my 12 year old daughter who was sub 100 lbs when she started shooting it. I switched my stock to a Bell and Carlson which put me into a different butt pad, and I used Hornady managed recoil rounds for my kiddo. I never felt uncomfortable with the 308 and my daughter never complained about shooting hers. Now 7 years later, I recently added the spacer to her stock and re-sighted her rifle with Nosler 165 Accubond factory ammo since she is now grown a bit. I also checked my rifle to make sure the scope was still on target. I did these a week apart and don't recall any difference in the recoil between the two. I actually find the recoil of the 308 to be pleasant to shoot but it does start to compound halfway thru a box of ammo so we seem to be on the same page here.

    • @Gonken88
      @Gonken88 2 года назад

      Most people would say that it is. Even among the worst among "regular" calibers. I'm not saying you are, but if you *are* a 350lbs fataess with decent arm strength, it may explain why it doesn't kick. It should knock most regular sized people fairly off sight at 45m+, even with like a bipod.

    • @noyb72
      @noyb72 2 года назад

      @@Gonken88 Not sure what being knocked off target has to do with excessive recoil? Any round you are going to point at an animal bigger than a woodchuck should knock you aff target. I'm not sure who your "most people" is but the overwhelming majority of individuals I interact with would agree with that statement. The 30-06 is not a 425 Westley Richards, and thousands of those were shot just fine without any type of brake. Stock design, fit, and rifle weight go a long way

    • @Gonken88
      @Gonken88 2 года назад

      @@noyb72 You want me to explain how getting knocked off target correlates to excessive recoil? Ehm, are you sure you're not being willfully dense now? Nobody's comparing it to a .700 nitro express or something, but it's still considered to have a nasty recoil, especially with a heavy bullet. Your logic of "everything has a recoil and it's not as bad as a worse caliber" kind of only proves that you're aware of what I've already stated but unwilling to admit that I have a point. Or maybe you are 350lbs 😏

    • @noyb72
      @noyb72 2 года назад +1

      @@Gonken88 I believe our definition of the word "excessive" is different. What does losing sight picture have to do with hunting? It should take one bullet (yes, I have a few single shot rifles.) If you shoot at an animal over some arbitrary number between 30-50 pounds, the cartridge you use should be expected to generate adequate recoil for you to lose the sight picture, unless you are shooting from a stand with something like a bench rest weight rifle. Excessive recoil, to me and most of the people I know, is recoil adequate to generate enough concern about the pain resultant from firing that the hunter can't dedicate 100% of their attention to making the most accurate shot possible. Certainly, those calibers exist for most people, but 30-06 isn't one of them for most.

    • @Gonken88
      @Gonken88 2 года назад

      @@noyb72 Obviously it is - I define it as something that's worse than most regular calibers like 308 or 5.56 or 22 etc while you define it as something that nearly dislocates your shoulder.
      "What does losing sight picture have to do with hunting" - aside from the fact that a follow up shot becomes harder, nothing I guess, but we're talking about recoil not hunting. You asked how a heavy recoil correlated to getting knocked off target, which is kind of a bullshit question as it answers itself; a bigger recoil knocks you more off target.
      Then you move the subject into a hunting issue when the issue really solely was just whether a 30-06 has an "above avg" recoil, or "excessive" (excessive literally meaning something that's more than "normal", normal meaning average). The fact that people that you know are hard cases who scoff at a 30-06 really doesn't change the fact that it's vividly known for having a snappy, uncomfortable recoil. Whether you or your social clique consider it to be excessive by your own definition of the term is pretty irrelevant. It's not a caliber that the average built person would consider comfortable firing off a lot of rounds in a row with as the recoil is enough of an issue for the caliber to have gained a rep for this exact reason. That you or your buddies don't personally agree with that is a pretty weak argument.

    My top 5 choices in 30-06 for the average hunter/shooter not wanting an entry level rifle.
    1. Tikka T3X Lite. These rifles are by far the most accurate out of the box rifles I've ever shot. I've shot numerous Tikka's and they all shoot moa or less with a variety of ammunition. Recoil pads are available from Tikka and the aftermarket if your recoil sensitive. For what it's worth, I own a Tikka T3X and a Bergara B14 Ridge rifle and have been satisfied with both of these rifles. However, my Tikka is slightly more accurate and more pleasant to carry if I'm going to be hiking any distance. If I was forced to sell one of these two rifles, I would still own the Tikka.

    3. Howa 1500 ( Howa manufacturers the Weatherby Vanguard )

    I have 2 beautiful BARs in 30-06 and 7MM Mag and one 7MM Mag in a full camo finish. They are absolutely a dream to hunt with, and will honestly group with almost any bolt gun I've shot. Great choices. I will offer up one choice that I feel deserves some consideration. That is the Ruger M77 30-06. I have one in the camo finished wood and stainless. I can't find a single thing I don't like about this rifle. Super quality recoil pad as well. Several people have shot it and are amazed at the lack of recoil. Honestly, so am I!!! It spits Core Lokt 180 grain bullets sub MOA all day long. Killed my largest buck in 39 years of deer hunting with it last year. Enjoyed the video. Thank you!

      I think you should still get a Tikka in your hands. The reason they have a bad kick at first is because of the stiff factory butt pad. Throw an aftermarket limbsaver on instead and it'll be golden. If you've never owned a Tikka before once you feel that bolt you'll be hooked.

    Worse case if you find the rifle you want in 30-06 and it's not threaded you can always take it later if need be to a decent gun smith and have it threaded. Not a big deal and not a large exspense

  • @bigbasscatcher86

    I don't totally agree with the threaded barrel concept. If I'm hunting i usually don't ear protection as I assume most people don't and, I'm not wanting to blow my ear drums out with a muzzle brake. In many areas its not legal to hunt suppressors or people just don't want to through the hassle of the nfa nonsense. If people can't handle the recoil of a 30-06 I sure hope they don't shoot shotguns with high brass. Get a pellet gun or man up.

    It is remarkable the 6.8 Western only lost to the 270 Winchester by 8% points (33% to 41%) given its large following. This is significant as there are so many that dislike even hate the 6.8 Western. In my opinion, in less than a year, the 6.8 Western has established its self as a significant cartridge. It is possible it could be as popular as the 6.5 Creedmoor in 5 years. We will need to wait and see.

    Interesting. Ive followed along with a bunch of these videos. And since have purchased a 3006 and looking at the .308. I loved the beggara hands down as the best fit in my hand. Even the price being less then 1000 at our retailer. I almost took the dive. Then i really looked into detailes. I ended up picking up the 3006 compass. And after just finding a retailer still selling the original savage "10" series. Ive found my new favorite line of rifles ever. At less then $400 for a fluted barrel,large handle, tactical stock, threaded muzzle, and removable mag. I wish i would have looked at these long ago. I bought the compass for 400. Its comfortable and has a delayed recoil. The beggara is just a step above the savage 10 series imo. But for $600 less. I looked at the ruger Americans and the rest of your list. My older rem 710 was my comparison. Sadly....non of these are that much better, if at all. The savage 10 series has amazed me. Best rifle bang for the buck ever.
    The browning just seem like they are trying to be exotic. Not worth the money in any way. Again still using my older Rem. Semi auto.

    How interesting, I have a Tikka T3x in ‘06 and love it. I’ve shot 100’s of rounds through it and have no worries with recoil. The Tikka is an awesome accurate rifle and as you say light, who wants to carry more weight that necessary. When shooting at game no one notices recoil and you’re not sitting on a bench shooting 20 rounds in a row. Besides, when shooting this rifle you can’t really shoot more than a few rounds at a time because the barrel gets too hot and degrades accuracy. Love my Tikka T3x in 30-06 shooting 48 grains of Varget and a 160 grain Hammer Hunter. It more than up to anything you ask of it.

    Back in 82, I went to look at a new 30-06. When I went to the store, they had 3 to choose from. The Remington 700, the Weatherby Vanguard, and the Winchester Model 70 in a featherweight. After handling all three, I picked the Winchester. I also bought a Tasco World Class 3x9 scope. I replaced the scope 4 yrs. ago and ended up giving the rifle to my son last year. When it comes to recoil, I found it to be surprisingly light considering the rifle alone weighed less than 7 lbs. without scope. Besides, the only time recoil was ever a factor was during sighting in. I can't answer for others, but no matter what firearm I have in my hands, when shooting at game, I NEVER notice the recoil. My biggest concern is accuracy and dependability and I had both with the Winchester. I was getting 1" groups at 100 yds. even with the cheap Tasco scope and factory ammo.

    If the added weight isn't an issue, I echo the sentiment that the Weatherby Vanguard is a good choice for a 30.06. If you can't afford both a Vanguard and a nice scope with decent rings, the Howa 1500 (a little too heavy for long hunts) has very manageable recoil. For most hunters, I would recommend something a little lighter, but not a Kimber Mountain Ascent, Tikka T3x (as mentioned in this video), or Ruger American, as they all have too much felt recoil for most shooters. That said, there is one lightweight rifle I'm interested in getting my hands on: the Barrett Fieldcraft.

It shoots amazing and recoil is no worse than any 270 win or 280 rem I’ve ever fired and that gun is a tack driver that has taken an uncountable. I have 3 loads for different hunting and all those loads shoot moa around 1” . I’m a little partial because it’s the first rifle I ever bought as an adult. In today’s terms it is heavier than most rifles but in that caliber I think that’s a plus. I also bought that bergara hunter in 30-06 two years ago from Buds on sale and it shoots really well. I really enjoyed this video; great job! I'm not a fan of the 30-06 but I think this video points out the importance of matching your cartridge selection with your rifle selection and your personal preferences. In my earlier and less informed days I tried a 30-06 in a 5.8lb rifle with 180 grain high power ammo - what a disaster! Not only jarring recoil but terrible follow up shot accuracy from a quickly heated pencil thin fluted barrel. Worth mentioning here is if you are making a purchase to last your lifetime, something to think about is how you will change as you age. Realize ahead of time that as you get older you will become more and more sensitive to recoil and carrying weight. Our bodies do give way to time. My rifles are now down to 7lbs 2oz scoped and acceptable recoil w/o a brake at this weight for me is from 280 Rem to 243 Win. That 6.5CM keeps looking better each passing year.

    I would not get the Sako S20, everyone I know who had one said it did not live up to Sako quality. Instead, at that same price point, I would try to get my hands on Sako's budget rifle - the A7 - just a little bit of a premium over the Tikka T3 and IMO worth it.

    Two comments…one, if you’re buying a Bergara B14 Hunter or Ridge, you might as well spend a few extra dollars and get the “Wilderness” editions of each, as they come with cerakoted metal. Also the Wilderness Ridge comes with a factory radial muzzle brake…so for about $90 more than a regular Ridge you’re getting cerakote and a brake (the brake alone is like $70 on Bergara’s site).
    Second, you’re correct about the Bergara premium looking like someone went to town with spray paint…they are all individually hand painted. I don’t know that they’re using rustoleum rattle can but they are painted with something…the Wilderness rifle sticks are done the same way.

    The 30-06 of choice at several deer camps where we hunt in Maine is old school.... The Remington 760 Gamemaster. Pump action with the barrel cut down to 18.5". Easier to get through the brush, accurate enough out to 200 yards though the average shot is less than 100 yards given the terrain. Less weight, but not overly high perceived recoil. No one uses a semi-auto as they are less reliable and much heavier. I prefer a Ruger American in .308 just because it's lighter and because I am a southpaw... not to mention its a heck of gun for the money with a great trigger out of the box. I’m a big 06 fan and there are a number of guns n models for everyone’s taste. I have owned over 80 rifles/caliber in 50 yrs of hunting n shooting and lived them all. However, I’m not sure of the use regarding suppressors/silencers on rifles in the US. I’m just glad we don’t have that here in Canada yet or at least western Canada. All my life I’ve liked a nice somewhat compact rifle that is easy to get out of the truck or walk around with and just can’t get used to the sight of a standard length action rifle, 22” or 24” barrel and that can sticking on the end of it increasing the length by several inches. I thought they were originally intended for high population areas but seem kind of out of place in areas like Alaska, Montana etc and in would be in my neck of the woods. I do agree with you on gun weight. I’m tending to drift back to slightly heavier rifles 6lb12oz to 7lbs8oz rifles as I find I shoot more accurately with them than the rifles I used to own that were under 6 1/2 lbs not to say there are not well balanced light rifles just that during the heat of the moment, the excitement n adrenaline a little heavier rifle just holds more steady for me.

I use the BAR for deer because the weight is a non issue hunting from a stand and I love the low recoil and quick follow up shot ability. I actually took four does with four shots on the last day of rifle season.
    I bought the Tikka t3x for elk hunting because of it's light weight and accuracy. I took my first elk at just over 300 yards across a canyon and had enough time for a reasonably quick but unnecessary follow up shot. I love the gun, especially after the Limbsaver. 😀

    Best 30-06 rifles are actually in 308 it comes pretty close to matching ballistics using less powder (about 100ish fps with the same bullet weights), lessens recoil, and opens up the rifle options. You'll thanks me later... LOL Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

    The best 30-06 rifle ever made is the M-1 Garand, As for the rifles not made in 30-06, just get a .308. The .308 actually has more velocity with a 150 grain bullet as the SAMMI pressure spec is higher. The 30-06 can be more effective with heavy bullets due to it's longer case for moose/elk. My go to 30-06 hunting rifle is a Remington Sendero with a Timney trigger.

    Good video, as usual. I’m the opposite when it comes to threaded barrels on hunting rifles. That’s just something else to rust and corrode. I’m not a fan of brakes on hunting rigs either. and I’m not getting a silencer for a rifle that I shoot outdoors in open country.

    In my opinion, the remington 700 pattern like the bergara,, handle recoil as good or better than anything out there. I've been shooting a 7mn rem mag since 13 years of age, and I've never really noticed the recoil unless shooting 20 plus rounds in one session, which I try to avoid. Conversely, I worked up a load in 7mm rem mag for a friend who had a Savage 110. I shot about 10 rounds through that mule kicking sob and gave it back to him. It was absolutely brutal both in felt recoil and muzzle jump.

    I really hope with Remington revamp they come out with a new good quality 7400 style rifle with the quality of the old school 740 and 742 and early 7400. Of course also it's sister pump rifle.

    I own a 30-06 Tikka T3X in an aftermarket ultralight carbon fiber stock. I agree, it's a lively beast to shoot with no brake and running 178gr ELD-X's hard. But it's fantastic in the mountain rifle sense and where high volume shooting isn't required.

    Hey Jim, back in August I bought a brand new Marlin XL7 30-06(bought still in the box never fired), I personally love it but it seems to be a fairly unknown/uncommon rifle. Just wondering if you've ever shot one and if so what you thought of it.

    • @leifhoklin2681
      @leifhoklin2681 2 года назад +2

      I had an XL7 in .308 several years ago. I put it into a Boyd's laminated stock. For whatever reason, that rifle beat the crap out of me on the bench. It seemed nothing I did helped tame the recoil. My primary deer rifle now is a 1953 model 70 sporter in .270 with a 24" barrel. Even though my model 70 has a lot of drop to the comb, and has an aluminum butt plate it is a very mild shooter. I think that the way a rifle stock fits has a big impact on felt recoil. It's possible that I wasn't holding the butt pad of that XL7 square to my shoulder, and was allowing the top part of the pad to climb up above my shoulder. Anyway, the XL7 was a handsome, accurate, and well made rifle. I wish I still had it, as I'm sure I could've sorted out the recoil issues knowing what I know now.

    Edit: I forgot you listed the Browning BAR, he can hang out with my 5 best.

    I don’t know how much content you could produce … but I’d be interested in a video that compares pros and cons to trading / selling your firearms for another one or keeping everything you’ve bought and just saving for the “next one”. Thoughts ?

    Love your show, value your knowledge, and quite often find myself watching your reviews before purchasing new rifles. But I must say, my father got me my first rifle, browning medallion, chambered in 30-06 when I was 12, way back in 1985. To that end I feel no healthy grown man should need a brake on that cartridge. Nothing worse than the pussification of the modern day American male.

    Purchased a Tikka T3X and went lightweight on the scope and rings. I can deal with the recoil for 2 shots. What I can't deal with is packing around an 11-14 lb rifle all day, up and down mountains hunting for elk or deer just to keep the 2 shot recoil to a minimum. If I'm bench shooting for distance or accuracy for kicks and expect to send 30- 40 down range, I'll choose a heavier rifle. Lost 4 lbs going to the Tikka T3X platform, lost 12 lbs off my gut by going on a diet and cutting back on beer, 3 lbs off my pack, and 1 lb choosing light weight layers. There's 19 lbs I don't have to pack for 7-10 miles in the mountains per day during hunting season. At 60, it helps. 2000 steps in a mile, roughly. Do the math...It adds up!

    I'm still happy with my Winchester new model 70 lightweight in 30-06. I installed a fiberglass stock, a Leupold 2X7 compact and a limb saver recoil pad and it handles well. 7 1/4 LBs, a pleasure to carry and I've run 20 rounds through a shooting session with no issues.

    Maybe it’s just my area (Midwest) but it seems a lot of guys want to shoot 180 gr 30-06 when hunting whitetail. I’ve never understood why. I always use 150 gr and I’ve never lost a deer. As a matter of fact they’ve never taken more then a few steps. Those 180s are only going to add unnecessary recoil for that game.
