I heard Dave Fiuczynski in the '90s and thought he was a Steve Vai tremolo bar devotee to get his sound - only to see him live to discover he had a fretless. I loved the sound, and a few years ago bought a Gretsch LP style on the cheap and paid to have it converted to a fretless. Really a cool tool, though you have to work on it. I don't play it so much but when I do it pushes me. Cool sounds and while it's easy to make it sound like a slide, the idea is to do as Jeff says - make it more glissando.
I've studied & played Sarode for 5 decades, also I play guitar. I made my own electric fretless by buying a fretless neck from Amazon and putting it on a Yamaha Pacifica. It's extremely hard to transfer Gats and compositions from Sarode to guitar. Mostly it's the width of the string gap at the bridge. A guitar is around 3/8's, Sarode is 1/2 inch. Alaap is easier but anyone wishing to go down that rabbit hole, learn some Raags from a good teacher first, the structure isn't easy, but the focus on the minutiae of the melodic world will open unending doors, IMO. Nice sound here.
Very nice. You have all eleven strings on? It sounds like maybe you're using the top and bottom for drones and playing melody mainly on the fifth? Now I must have one of these!
Yes, I am using all 11 strings. I am using the lowest and highest strings as my Chikari. I am also occasionally fretting them from time to time if they apply to the notes I am playing, specifically the lowest notes during the Alap.
@@andrewrai5752 I was influenced to try fretless guitar for Indian classical music because of a recording by Vasant Rai. I would be very curious to discuss your father more and would like to know if you also learned Sarod from him.
@@JeffStarr Hey Jeff, sorry for the late reply as I just saw this wow! would love to talk to you about my dad. I'll send you an email to you with my contact! best wishes!
