  • Shorshe Maach or Fish Mustard Curry is an authentic dish from West Bengal. The main ingredient used here is mustard, which has to be thoroughly cooked to get rid of its pungent aroma. Traditionally made with mustard paste grinded by a "sheel noda" where stone is used to grind mustard by the use of friction. A beautiful dish with very less ingredients and simple flavours. You can also use other fishes like Hilsa, Catla, the results would be the same. Try this recipe at home and serve with a hot bowl of steaming rice.

I tried this recipe for the first time today. Few interesting points to note, sharing them below for people who might face similar challenges.
    1. While making the mustard chilli paste do not add too much water and take less mustard. This will make the process of separating oil from mustard while cooking veryyy long. It took me 30 minutes.
    2. Oil separating issue. I didnt really see any visible oil separating. Everything just dries up and it became a thick paste that was not sticking to the pan (i was using non stick pan). Once the thick paste was formed, i roasted it for 5 minutes to just cook the mustard completly. The oil never came out.
    3. After adding the fish and water and cooking for 5 minutes on low, it tasted bitter. I only adjusted salt little by little. And cooked on low for 10 more minutes. At the end it was still a bit bitter.
It tasted fine with rice and regular daal. It was infact good.
    4. My final dish was greenish rather than yellow, probably because of the green chilli.
Final thoughts, dont give up. Just keep cooking. Will certainly try this again. 😊

U r right. Only black mustard will make it bitter. Usually it's a combination of black mustard seeds 25%+ yellow mustard seeds 75%.
