  • Namaste everyone!
    As everyone was in the Encanto fever these past few months, undoubtedly so was I and "We Don't Talk About Bruno" was hooked in my mind for ages. I looked it up in numerous languages to get some nice eargasm from the voices and the various language phonetics falling into my ear, but only lately did I start looking up some of the translations of the song, and noticed how Isabela's portion, which was nothing but a prophecy of Bruno about her, was transcreated in some pretty unique and interesting ways!
    Some languages simply changed the simile used in the original line, while others almost completely restructured the prophecy and some...even gave premonitions about what's to happen with Isabela in the film ahead, it was SO exciting to notice these tiny details for me and here I just compiled 11 of the best transcreations of Isabela's prophecy by Bruno.
    Languages featured (and the names of the esteemed lyricists)
    1. English - Lin Manuel Miranda
    2. French - Virginie Acariès
    3. Hindi - Sumitaa Ganguly Chauhan
    4. Polish - Michał Wojnarowski
    5. Cantonese - Wong Zung-Git (王仲傑)
    6. Telugu
    7. Greek - Ilías Matámis (Ηλίας Ματάμης)
    8. Kazakh
    9. Georgian - Mak’a Aroshidze (მაკა აროშიძე)
    10. Danish - Trine Dansgaard
    11. Vietnamese - Lucas Luân Nguyễn
    So, which of these transcreations did YOU like the best? Do you like Isabela's powers growing like grapes on a vine? Or do you prefer her going eco-friendly and 'flourish the Earth'? Let me know in the comments below!
    Sincere thanks to every youtuber who helped out for this/uploaded an S&T video. ;)

    I have to say, the English wins for one simple reason: Isabel(l)a isn't just a name for a person, it's also the name of a popular type of grapevine. Many of the names of the Madrigals are connected to their powers:
    Camilo -> Chameleon
    Luisa means Renowned Warrior
    Julieta -> famous cook, Julia Child (maybe a stretch but it works!)
    The fact that they lampshade Isabela's name meaning with the grapevine reference is absolute gold, IMO.

      German uses "wriggling vine." So there are some languages that keep it. But regardless of language, I don't envy anyone who has to translate Lin's epic music. His lyrics and melodies are so amazing. Matching them in other languages while keeping the rhythm must be so difficult.

      I've formulated a hole theory on why Bruno's predictions sometimes come true and sometimes don't. Like, Isabella's prophecy held up, but Dolores's didn't. At the end of the movie she did get the love of her life, no longer out of reach or foretold to another. Also both prophecies foretold to Mirabel, one with two possible outcomes and one saying that to save the miracle, she had to make up to Isa. But that wasn't really true? She had to make up with abuela to make things right. Maybe his future vision can only see so far into the future? Or it predicts how people will react AFTER hearing it? Idk dude

    I think my favourite is the georgian one : "He said as soon as I'd spread my wings I would dress up in beautiful vines". It really something that can be interpretated as "look that's what happened" the moment she sings it, but in fact it refers to what happens later with "what else can I do".

    My favourite voice is the Telugu one, she sounds like a disney princess which is kind of the vibe she has despite not being a disney princess if that makes sense? I think that it kind of fits Isabela really well.

    "Just like a blooming rose!" I feel like Hindi missed the mark with that lyrics. The English one implied she can grow more than just flowers and roses.

    • @rishabhrox1
      @rishabhrox1  2 года назад +17

      The irony of the rose is that while it blooms very pretty on the outside, it also has thorns underneath the shiny petals. If you look through this perspective, maybe the translation works very subtly and ingeniously to describe Isabela here.

    I absolutely adore the Finnish dub of the song. I asked my father (who’s a translator - he’s not a lyricist though) to translate her verse.
    Finnish: “Kertoi sen, lahja voimallinen / Lailla köynnöksen versoaa”
    His translation: “He told me that the powerful gift / Sprouts up like a vine”
    The fact that she describes her gift like a vine is really fitting. Vines are strong and resilient, but I doubt most would consider them beautiful like the flowers she normally conjures. I feel like Isabela would be more focused on gaining more power over her gift and experiment with all kinds of plants if she wasn’t stuck in her “perfect” mold.
