      @@TheEnd-eg6wq No, Rich Strike wasn't in dead last except perhaps right out of the gate as he moved across the rear of the field towards the rail to get into position. He'd overtaken 2 horses halfway thru the opening stretch, and 3 by the first turn. It was an incredible run that doesn't require made-up hyperbole.

When the pack swung outside coming out of the final turn, it just sort of sucked them forward and gave them running room. I can almost see the disbelief in both horse and rider, like "holy s**t it's open running!" Beautiful to see Rich Strike cut around the #6 horse and still hold stride. But, to run down the leaders and win going away after that smoking pace shows speed apparently nobody knew this horse had. I grew up going to the Downs and hanging around on the back side. I've never seen a horse stare down other horses during a race. Let's be honest, horses have limited intelligence. Most stare straight ahead and will run until they die if prompted. Several times Rich Strike turns his head , telling Sonny Leon where he wants to go. He's clearly staring at Epicenter, he wanted to catch him and win the race. That's why we watch sports for moments like this. You gotta run the race, play the game. Never know what's gonna happen.

    Larry Collmus just gave one of the finest moments in sports announcing history! I don't keep up with horse racing but watch replays anytime a big upset or excitingly close race happens. The call by Collmus is so utterly perfect I have watched this at least a dozen times now and his call coming down the final stretch gives me major goose bumps EVERY time! As exciting of a race as one could ask for with an announcer who's voice, tone and inflection matches every second of excitement perfectly!

    • @kevinh5349
      @kevinh5349 2 года назад

      I read an article on him and the amount of time he has to spend to get ready for every race. A real pro. Being able to call off those 20 names in that amount of time.

    • @daltonchandler6446
      @daltonchandler6446 2 года назад +10

      "Utterly perfect?" I don't know about that. He didn't even seem to notice Rich Strike at all until AFTER he took the lead. You could see him moving toward the wire, but Collmus ignored him until the end.

    • @daltonchandler6446
      @daltonchandler6446 2 года назад +3

      And don't get me wrong - he's the ultimate pro at his job, I just thought it a little less than perfect that he either didn't notice Rich Strike moving or discounted it. He was still calling it like a two-horse race when RS had already pulled up to the lead.

      @Mark Johnson I’ve noticed announcers sometimes have a hard time catching late runs down the rail. One of the examples that comes to mind is the 09 derby. Mine That Bird was absolutely flying down the rail going unacknowledged until he pulled away by at least a length. This call was similar to that one . However, I do think Larry’s call was much better than the 09 derby call. LC caught on quick and delivered a fantastic line as Rich Strike crossed the finish line. I really enjoyed this call but I do think he’s had better ones throughout his tremendous career. That’s just my opinion tho, anyways it was a great Derby 🙌

      No se, Rick pero...
      Creo que de hoy en dos o tres años estaremos viendo en las pantallas de cine primero, y por los canales de TV Cable Cinemax y HBO después, una película al mejor estilo de "50 a 1" ("50 to 1") film que recrea la inolvidable gesta ganadora del castrado nacido en Kentucky Mine That Bird (Hijo de Birdstone en Mining My Own por Gridstone) dirigida pór Jim Wilson y protagonizada por Skeet Ulrich como el entrenador Benie "Chip" Wooley, Christian Kane y Williiam Devine como Mark Allen y Leonard Black, los propietarios del caballo, Madelyn Deutch como la traqueadora Alex y el jinete Calvin Borel como él mismo.
      El histórico triunfo de Rich Strike da para eso desde antes de darse la partida, porque el hijo de Kenn Ice en Gold Strike por Curlin ¡estaba en lista de espera, y gracias al retiro el viernes 7 de Mayo del ejemplar Ethernal Road, el ganador del 148.vo Derby de Kentucky pasó a ocupar su puesto!
      😄😆😅😀😊😎😅😃😀
      Saludos desde Venezuela.

    Every year I would watch the Derby with my mom. She LOVED horses! Her favorites were the horses that come out with the competitors. She’d always remark how beautiful they were. We’d make our picks & she always ended up picking an underdog. That’s was the fun of it for her. This is the first Derby we didn’t get to watch together. I pray she was able to see the result! She would’ve loved this so much! Miss you!❤️ 🐎

      My mom was a steeplechaser in her youth, and as we were "Baltimorons", she took me to Pimlico to see Secretariat win the Preakness in 1973. Big Red also typically lounged at the back of the pack till the final turn, then scampered to the front for the win....
      Our moms are petting ALL the horses in heaven, I'm sure.

      I own a thoroughbred but no longer watch racing because I think it pressures horses when they are too young (the three years are really only two years old and some months) but after covid shut down everything... I thought I would watch the Derby this year! Boy am I glad I did. What a superb job of riding by that jockey! Judging by his actions after race as he was being ponied back that horse had a lot more gas in his tank but we will see in the Belmont which is longer than the Derby. Well done!!!
