This is an extremely, extremely impressive race. The track wasn't blazing fast today, but his time was racehorse time. The fractions were really really fast compared to the other races. First time I watched it I was impressed then I rewatched it saw that 6 furlong clip and realized we had just witnessed one of the greatest performances of all time.
I miss Cigar the most. He won 16 in a row. He died 8 years ago at age 24. He's the horse who got me into racing in 1996. Wasn't the fastest but he's my greatest.
Flightline will have to win 10 races next year AND win the Dubai World Cup to be mentioned in the same breath as Cigar. Great race by Flightline today though, it's a good start.
This owner became my favorite thoroughbred owner today. In an age of playing up to the camera, after Flightline won, this man was both moved and dignified. In the winner's circle he expressed thankfulness. And yes sir, we all have "Flightline Fever"
@RichardK I was also immediately aware of the same thing. When the cameras panned to Mr. Finley directly after the finish, his face spoke volumes; he showed overwhelming gratitude and humility for the gift Flightline has brought to him, and to so many others. Both he and Mr Farish were equally well-spoken, self-effacing, unpretentious, and genuinely gracious when asked about Flightline’s amazing accomplishments. It was truly a credit to their characters.
I'm sure many people noticed it, but no whip touched Flightline in this race. A horse who loves to run, and a rider who knows how to let the run loose at the right time.

Just a shame his owners put greed before the chance to go for immortality and history. The horse only ran six times so we’ll never know just how good he was and therefore doesn’t deserve to be compared to the likes of Secretariat and probably the greatest of them all Frankel.
2 minutes flat for 1 mile 1/4 going those crazy fractions and a strong wind blowing ? Horse has a serious engine just spat a deep field out. Ultra impressive performance.

Credit to the connections of Life Is Good, who was in it to win it. They weren't running for second, and the only way they could win is by using Life Is Good's best asset, which is his speed.
Reminded me of the 1973 Belmont: when Secretariat and Sham left the pack for a match race at a record pace. Wow! Flightline has it all, speed and endurance.
@@julieduiguid7772 Of course not the breaking the record by almost 3 seconds and winning by 31 links, but the two leaving the pack behind is what I was talking about.

The way Flightline was watching the crowd go crazy in the stretch. It's like the really good ones, know. Much respect to the owner of Flightline. Nobody knew how bad Epicenter was injured and I think that's the reason the owner of Flightline didn't celebrate. So much class in Flightlines camp.

Secretariat did such a nerve wrecking start. Run out of the gait badly, recover on the track and blast out as the winner in the end with a grand length lead. Just look at his Kentucky Derby. I think Flightline just prefers position in the head of the pack
Great horse yes. Secretariat, no. When you find one that breaks world records training and can run every quarter faster than the one before, then we can talk.

One of the things that makes this a great horse is that his jockey doesn’t even reach for a whip. He just lets him open up. You can actually see when his jockey stops holding him in and encourages him to go for it. And did any one notice that he was barely sweating and not even breathing heavily at the end of the race. He looked like he’d been out for a morning workout.

@@jimlewis2395 well, I was a little young for them. But I'm a card carrying member of the Secrariot fan club, Gun Runner, Ghost Zapper, America Pharaoh we're all awesome. This is something different. Life is Good is a 8 time graded stakes champion abd whom I bet on in that race and he was loose one the lead and FL blew by him like a maiden claimer. I'm open to conversations but when a horse beats every one he runs against by 8, 12, 30 lengths it's time to have this discussion
I love Flightline but he surely isnt the greatest in ANYONE'S but maybe yours. As you probably know he has only ran 6 races. That isnt enough to be considered the greatest. I hope they run him next year and I hope he shows how really great he is.
I saw Big Red as a 2 years old. He could beat anyone in 1972. And in 1973. He won in Track Record Times like 6 or 7 times . World Records in a few of them. I doubt Flightline can do that. So, that's my Lifetime Horse, at 67 years old.
@@vambo13257, not really. Not every horse knows where to start running up. As a jockey you need to understand your horses moves and speed, knowing when to push harder and how to push. So, you still need to have a good chemistry with the animal to pull something like this off.
Every time he raced...he made folks say "Can he be as good as he looks?". Massive lengths between him and opponents. Then in this race... was next to a fast pace, with a STRONG field... one the best fields in a lonnnnnng time, he BREAKS the all time record for margin of victory in the BCC, without even touching him with the whip. I don't think he was touched with it in any of his 6 races. He's real. In the conversation as one of best ever.
Flightline has never felt the whip in any of his 6 races. Notice how Prat pulls back on him yards before the finish line. He could have broken the track record if not for that.
Sucks that more value is put on breeding than on pushing a horse to achieve greatness. If I was the owner, I'd have given him a 5yo season and maybe a 6yo season considering he ran just 3x as a 3yo and 4yo. He was lightly run. Had a lot in the tank
I'm sad we won't get to see him run a few more times. It would be great if he could cap off his career with a big win in the Dubai World Cup. But in a way, there is nothing left to do. There are no more worlds to conquer. He beat Life is Good, a winner of 9/11 and four G1s including the Breeders Cup Mile last year. He beat Olympiad, winner of 6 out his last 7 including the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. He beat Taiba winner of the G1 Santa Anita Derby and G1 Pennsylvania Derby. He beat Rich Strike, the G1 Kentucky Derby winner, He beat Hot Rod Charlie who is also a G1 winner. In the Pacific Classic he beat Country Grammer by 19 lengths, a horse who won the Dubai World Cup. He beat one of the fastest sprinter/middle distance horses Speakers Corner in the G1 Met Mile. There really isn't anyone left. So I guess thats the only part that makes a short 6 race careers somewhat satisfying.
No way anyone was going to stop him. Some foreign race broadcasters were saying in the far turn buckle up your seat belt Flightline is about to take of like an air plane. They were not joking. He took off… I wish we would see him running couple more races.
And there you have it. A brilliant run by probably the best horse on dirt since Spectacular Bid!!! Never touched by the whip in any of his 6 races. WOW!!
Amazing. Life is Good ran his heart out but just ran out of gas and got passed by the the other horses just before the finish line. Congratulations to the Amazing Flightline. This would have been a fantastic race even without Flightline. .
I think this is the case that is similar to Belmont 1973. Sham's jockey challenged Secretariat to a long run, trying to get his fuel to run low, not realising that Secretariat was holding back on most of the races. He didn't just loose the race. He came in 4-th and broke a bone, forcing him to end his career. Life is Good ended up the same way, early retirement, thankfully healthy
I could watch this race over and over, Life Is Good dominating for a mile then Flightline firing the afterburners was breathtaking. Flightline leaving some very good horses in the dust.
@@johnpoulter u do know that a lot of great horses in America that ran great on dirt could of been great on turf as well. Bob baffert said American pharaoh could of been a menace in Europe. But flightline would of been great too

I don't think we will ever know but its fun to talk about.I know its sacrilege to talk about big red with any kind of down play but he lost races. FL never did. That adds to the mystic.
FL only raced like 6 races and didn't do any of the triple crown. big red ran 21 times with 16 firsts 3 seconds and a third.. I think you got to go with big red.
Awe-inspiring indeed. One of the greatest performances I’ve seen. One of the best horses I’ve seen. Bone chilling stuff, right up there with Pharoah’s triple crown, Rachel’s Kentucky Oaks and the legendary distaff battle between Songbird and Beholder.
Wishing Epicenter a complete recovery. Joel Rosario noticed the horse wasn't right and started pulling him up on the backstretch at about @0:47. Outriders head out to meet them at @1:11. Ambulance heads out at @1:27.
A class A recovery team at the track, a police escort to the surgery center he might return (doubtful when pins are involved) but they did say he would probably live a ‘comfortable life’ - the injury team recovery system sure has come a far piece- they put a air splint on right away and the AP said it was a ‘textbook surgery’ that he had come through it all remarkably and was resting well at the Center. Credit to the joc for pulling him up so fast and signaling help!

@@kenwaring hes better then ghostzapper and spectacular bid. this horse has NEVER been hit with the whip think about that for a second. he would have shattered the track record at belmont if he was asked in met mile. and just cause those other 2 horeses ran faster classics means nothing.
Pharoah and Flightline both ran 2 minutes so, no, AP didnt do it faster. You cant say the other horses you mentioned are Superior to FL either just like you cant say FL is superior to them. Unless they all raced in the same era on the same tracks at the same time its impossibly to know which is better. Flightline blew away the horses he raced against in EVERY RACE. You cant say that for AP, Ghost Zapper, Bid, or even Secretariat. Secretariat is still the Goat though. Flightline would have to race another 10 races and win them all to be considered the Greatest because he never ran in the TC. The TC is the greatest test in horse racing and it's too bad FL didnt get the chance to race in it.
If it's true that this is Flightline last race, it would be pretty sad, I think we all want to see him race at least a couple of times more. I hope the owners change their mind.

Nope. The others would have caught him. He's not really a classics distance horse. He's never won at 1 1/4, even against lesser quality horses. He's a great sprinter/miler, he ran his heart out & I have mad respect for him, but win in this company, even without Flightline? No way.
He’s a good horse but can’t last the distance because if he was the best other than flight line he would’ve gotten second it’s just to much for him to run
@@duchessedepeluches I disagree. He would have been second here if he would have ran more normal fractions for the distance. Those were BC sprint fractions. Everyone says that he can’t get 1 1/4, but his DWC was a throw out. In every 1 1/8 GI race he’s ran lately, he still would have won if they would have gone 1/8 mile more. It’s just that he had to go too fast early here.

He's no Secretariat. Just remember back in 1973 Secretariat ran 1.59.4 for the Kentucky. That record still stands to this day. The Kentucky derby has been run 147 times and not only has no horse not beaten Secretariat's record. But no horse in 147 runnings of the race has even broken two minutes. Just let that sink in. Second Secretariat won the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont) Flighline didn't run in any Triple crown race. Third Secretariat broke records over various distances and ran on turf. Flightline has only ran on dirt. Fourth Secretariat ran 21 times. So we had a true gauge of his greatness. Rather than Flightline who will most likely be retired after only six races. He's talented horse that's it. But let's no dissrespct those who have come before him.
Flightline did run the 1 1/4 in under 2 minutes at the Pacific and he was eased up as you know. With that said, Flightline is a great horse but, yea, Secretariat is the GOAT. Flightline would have to win a lot more races to be considered anywhere near Secretariat
@@ayalaanthony1488 not necessarily. Just because horses get whipped doesn't mean they run faster. 💯. These horses that retire at 3 or 4 after a barely a handful of races make it difficult to grow thoroughbred racing. @@jimlarkin4110 I agree. While the comparison's to Secretariat are interesting, a 6 race record simply is not good enough to displace a legend like that. An undefeated 5 year old season with some more major stakes and a repeat in the Classic and then you'd have something.
Utterly dominant performance. #1 world ranking solidified today. Six-for-six season winning by a total of 70 lengths. How do you top that? You don't try. Off to the breeding shed for Flightline.
You top it by winning a TC. Secretariat would have won every race by 30 lengths if he was only raced 3 times a year. Secretariat raced 21 times in 16 months and FL raced 6 times in 2 years! Secretariat raced an average of a little over 1 race a month! FL is great but Secretariat is the GOAT by far.

How do you compare a horse? That’s ran five races against two horses that run 20+ races. The horse is certainly a great horse. And what he did in the Belmont will never be duplicated. It’s one of the great achievements in sports. There not a horse that came before secretariat, or after secretariat that could’ve beaten secretariat on that day, big red was a special horse
These are the best dirt horses in training and FLIGHTLINE goes out and absolutely embarrasses them. Of course this is one of ultra elite runners of all time. Flightline dominated every race he ever ran. He's worth so much in the breeding industry that sadly today's race may have been his last.
@@CamaroKidd2022 Well said I agree 150%
An absolute freak of nature!
Nice horse. Pompous trainer. Humble owners.
Agreed.
Yes, agree.
Greedy owners. Should have kept racing him
@@valerieteti1755 Forget the "sport" and fame, the horse's health should be the first priority. He rested due to injury and now there won't be a worry about him breaking down on the track. Selfish people these days chasing adrenaline highs dang.
@@valerieteti1755 no, he has NOTHING to prove.
That was an amazing acceleration at the end.i can see why they made the comparison to Secretary, but nobody was as good as secretary as secretary
Yeah, I think Flightline is better than Ghostzapper. Now GZ got a 124 BSF and he still owns the BCC stakes record. But Flightline is better as he dealt with a faster pace.
Ghostzapper ran a faster Met Mile and BC Classic than Flightline. Flightline is possibly the best horse 'since' Ghostzapper.
@Ian Noe The fractions have been corrected. Yes, had they been true they would have been "nuts". But they weren't.
@@kenwaring but GZ lost a bunch of times at 3....Flightline never lost.
@@marklewen9384 Ghostzapper lost once at 3, a grade 1, then he won 6 in a row recording incredible times.
@@kenwaring GZ lost twice total, agreed, and one of those was when he was WIDE against a great rail bias at saratoga in the kings bishop. GZ was a superstar....but its hard to gauge a horse who has never lost, like Flightline. You dont know where their ceiling is...
being alive is great sometimes, and we do not appreciate it as much as we should especially when we were all lucky enough to bear witness to a rare horse of Flightlines stature , it was one of those feel good moments in time for EVERYONE , a rare treat and seeing him just go! a Classic moment in time never to be forgotten such a wonderful horse
So much like Secretariat. Incredible. Chills the final turn and stretch.
NOT. Has he won at 1 1/2 has he won at 1 5/8? what about on turf? No? Then he's not BIG RED.
@@brianclark1858 👍👍👍
So NOTHING like Secretariat
Happy Retirement to Flightline. Maybe could have raced more but what did he have to prove?
This is THE BEST horse in 21century. I'm sure

When I started watching the breeders cup early this afternoon they were already before the horse even ran was comparing him to Man o war and secretariat. Until then the horse had only ran five races. How do you compare a horse? That’s ran five races against two horses that run 20+ races. The horse is certainly a great horse. It’s not his fault that he’s had a couple injuries, you’re talking about a horse in secretariat that won the triple Crown a horse that set the record in all three Triple Crown races that still stand to this day almost 50 years later. And what he did in the Belmont will never be duplicated. It’s one of the great achievements in sports. There not a horse that came before secretariat, or after secretariat that could’ve beaten secretariat on that day, big red was a special horse
50 years later, WE realize that Flightline is Special!
The BC races were televised on NBC in the past but not this year. Way to go !!!
They were on NBC, I watched them all on NBC
These are the best dirt horses in training and FLIGHTLINE goes out and absolutely embarrasses them. Of course this is one of ultra elite runners of all time. Whatever metrics you use the fact that no one could even run with him says volumes about his ability. John Sadler did a phenomenal job managing this horse. This is a sport where even the best are humbled. Huge mistake making Life is Good the sacrificial speed horse. He is a miler at best and didn’t even hit the board.
Good memories ❤
Flightline is the real deal. Fervently hoping the owners keep him on the track another year. Racing could use a new superstar.
Just got retired
Flightline was always going to be retired after this race. If there's anything that can be counted on in this sport these days, it's the greed of owners.

I was hoping against hope but I agree with you. Stud fees are what it's all about and with a horse like Flightline the risk of injury in racing him another year is too great. Still, as a fan I feel cheated. He could possibly be the greatest ever - and now we'll never know.
@@pokerface8242 Exactly; "could be". And after all of six races (and no records, might I add), he's already being compared to Secretariat.
@@kathrynhoward4196
A 4 year old with only 6 races under his belt; he ran 3 times in 2021 and 3 times this year. IMHO his visually impressive wins and high Beyer speed figures are what's responsible for the exaggerated claims of "all time great". Sorry folks, but what Secretariat did in 1973 still stands as the benchmark of greatness in this sport.
He went by Life is Good like he was standing still.
Un paseo lo de éste magnífico ejemplar sencillamente espectacular..
Felicitaciones a todas sus conecciones!!!
This is indeed a superstar
Kudos to Life is Good for putting himself out there for that fierce battle with Flightline. Wonder how it would have turned out if the race had been only a mile.
You are right - LIG best distance is the mile but even there Flightline would have won - any of the BC dirt race - Flightline would have won
@@TheNextTime1970 , true but maybe the margin of victory would not have been astronomical as in FL's previous races.
Mari, Flightline would have won if the race was at a mile.
Yeah I give the credit to life as Goods connections because they could have went to the mile and easily won that he ran a big big race
Flightline would have won at ANY distance , super horse , extraordinary
