if you're nervous about sketching in a coffee shop; go to one on an open mic night. People there will be paying attention to the performer, and most will receptive to being drawn. They tend to be more open-minded than the general public at large.
Ok, you motivated me. I was teetering and totering back and forth. I like Toby Urbansketch's classes because he is soooo loose and non-judgemental. I'm working through his skillshare class right now! He just launched a skillshare class for people sketching.
I used to go to these talks in a library and they'd let me in for free if I drew the speakers. Was a nice way to get some sketching experience and see some interesting presentations :D
You have some great hand gestures. I decided to sketch YOU 🙂 It would be fun to have a "sketch Me" challenge. I've been doing daily portrait drawings of myself. They are bad, really bad, but I figure it's practice.
That's an awesome idea Sage! I really love the idea of self-portraits. I have a personal challenge coming up in the next few months related to portrait drawing...yah all sketches are practice bad, good, doesn't matter. Just gotta keep sketching and having fun with it and sometimes it leads to breakthroughs :)
The secret is you do it a lot and you do it a lot more until you get better at it. One thing that helped me is studying caricature, it helps you learn to see people's facial features.
Ahhh ok - yes a challenge set by Liz Steel and Marc Taro Holmes. 20 people a day for 5 days...BUT you can use photos or videos if you want. I need to actually remember to do it, I have it written on my to do list today..."draw 20 people"....
This was really encouraging. Thank you Taria!!! I can't do it this week (I'm up to my eyes in a big project which keeps hitting technical problems, so I am _way_ behind, &, like you, deadlines loom!), but I am very slowly (!!!) getting better at drawing people from life, once a week at the library currently, or at outside pavement cafés (very useful if we can't afford actually going in to cafés) once the weather allows it. Maybe I'll try the 100 people challenge at another time when I have more time. Right now, I'm wondering how you are managing to fit everything in, with the book deadline so close, and am glad that you found the time to make this video! Thank you! 😃
Oh how time is my enemy - there is never enough of it. Perhaps I am my own worst enemy at over-committing! The book is DONE! But I am away in New Zealand for most of April so now I have to do March and April's work in March, ha ha. I swear it never ends. I am on 37 people so far and should have hit 60 bu now so the challenge isnt quite going to plan but hey ho, all we can do is try! It's only a bit of fun. And yes, do the challenge at a time that suits you! You could even reduce it a bit....maybe 10 people a day? I'm glad to hear your skills are slowly improving, I think mine are too....slowly slowly :)
Hi Liz, I ask friends around the world, I also do some myself and I also put a job listing on freelancer sites as well. Just for 1-2 minute videos of people. I wanted to get a nice spread of people from all over the world doing all kinds of things. If you are interested in helping you can email me. :)

I would love to join peoplesketching, but I can’t. 😢

Another tip for sketching moving people online is to watch concerts or interviews. There aren't usually a lot of switching camera angles in those.

The video repository thing is so cool! How do you source the videos?
