  • In 2016 the old criteria for diagnosis of Polycythemia Rubra Vera were replaced by the Wold Health Organization revised criteria. These new criteria are composed of three major and one minor criteria as follows:
    Major WHO criteria:
    1. Hemoglobin greater than 165 g/L in men and greater than 160 g/L in women, or hematocrit greater than 49% in men and greater than 48% in women, or red cell mass greater than 25% above mean normal predicted value
    2. Bone marrow biopsy showing hypercellularity for age with trilineage growth including prominent erythroid, granulocytic, and megakaryocytic proliferation with pleomorphic, mature megakaryocytes
    3. Presence of JAK2V617F or JAK2 exon 12 mutation
    Minor WHO criterion:
    1. Serum erythropoietin level below the reference range for normal (less than 25 U/L)
