They both have their strengths and weaknesses. And it's what I love about them. The fact that they each have their own unique sound capabilities. The Genesis wins in sound clarity with it's synth. Hands down no contest, the Yamaha 2612 sounds badass, perfect for arcade, beat em ups, and action games! The SNES on the other hand has a versatility advantage in that it could sound like real life instruments and ambient sounds. Perfect for RPGs, ambient atmosphere and music designed to capture human emotions. At the cost of compression.

Plok is debunking that idea. And voice samples are mostly, pretty bad on the Genesis. I will, however, say that I don't think that the SNES can reproduce the masterpieces by Technosoft. The sound track of Dragon's Fury, is mind-blowing amazing. The sound track for Herzog Zwei is also at another level for the 16-bit consoles.

Fm synthesis is a nightmare if you don’t know what you’re doing, which is why there were so many garbage soundtracks on the megadrive. However, in the hands of a master, like Yuzo Koshiro, that little Yamaha could make some amazing music, that the snes never could. But equally the snes could produce masterpieces like Aquatic Ambience, which couldn’t have been done on the megadrive. I love both systems, but for me, the megadrive just takes it. After all, you don’t get any modern instruments emulating the snes chip, but there are plenty of modern ym2612 clones, both in hardware and software.

Owning both consoles, I'd say both have their strenghts on audio capabilities.
Samples can be used to emulate FM Synthesis, true, but it will HARDLY sound the same on an actual console, without some amplification. SNES sound tends to be way more gentle and muffled (mostly due both to the gaussian filter and the 32khz output), while Genesis' basses are really powerful.
That said, it's obvious that SNES has a wider spectrum of instruments to work with, due to how samples work.
While samples can emulate FM synthesis, the opposite can't be done.
Overall, the SNES chip is more versatile and "better" from a composer's point of view, but still, with all its limitations, MD packs more punch.
I like them both. Both are good at their own respective thing.
    Both have great OSTs.
Genesis/MD has the Sonic games, Alisia Dragoon, SoR 2, Gley Lancer, Battle Mania 2, Eternal Champions, Musha Aleste...
SNES has the DKC trilogy, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Killer Instinct, Ninja Warriors Again/TNG, Super Mario RPG, Super Aleste...

@@CarloNassar I agree. I am saying Plok right now, and that bonus level song that plays first is just as beefy and bassy as it sounds here. What really makes the difference is how much memory is reserved for samples. If there is little room on the cart left for samples, then music and sound may sound muffled as the samples are down sampled more to save space. With the right amount memory and the right person composing, the SNES can do so amazing things. Check out "Nu" by Elix. It's a small demo, but on it sounds just like the RUclips video on a real cart. I made one myself to hear what it actually sounds like. Its great.

Bingo. Both were great systems and should be appreciated for what they are. That being said, multiplat games, some sounded better on one than the other. The thing with FM Synthesis is that is very complicated to make your own instruments and there wasn't much software to make those instruments back in the day.
MIDI samples are easier to work with and there was (and is) more software to manipulate the samples.
Both when used to their strengths (for example, techno in MD/Genesis and orchestral in SNES) and the composer works hard enough, can produce true masterpieces.

So, I don't know jack about old school gaming hardware's music capabilities. I make music and DJ as well, but this mention blew my mind. I did not know SNES used samples. Looking into it, it seems like SNES has a very low sample rate sounds, and sometimes even sounds like it uses a "slowed down" sample. For example, it sounds like they recorded a fast forward sound, then slowed it down during playback. This technique is used on machines like the SP 1200, because it has very short sampling time. So the trick around it was to record samples twice the speed, then slowing it down to fit the necessary sounds.

If you like a real sound, a real instrument, you'd prefer the Genesis. The Genesis sound chip is an instrument in itself: an FM synthesiser. If you like orchestral, muffled keyboard sampling sounds: that is the SNES. The SNES chip can replicate more sounds but it remains a sampler, while the Genesis chip makes its own sounds. Still I think SNES is more atmospheric, and perfectly suits RPGs

While I agree that the SNES has some amazing soundtracks, and the underlying tech is impressive for the time, the extremely limited sample RAM had a pretty noticable impact on the sound. I personally prefer a clear, synthesized sound with the correct timbre of an instrument, over a lo-fi interpolated sample of the instrument. In my opinion, a better sounding sample-based system of the era would be the Commodore Amiga. The Amiga sound chip was far less sophisticated, but it played samples from the shared system RAM via DMA, rather than a small piece of dedicated RAM, so there was much more space for samples. That lead to soundtracks which used a more diverse range of longer/better sounding samples than the SNES could pull off. You're missing out if you don't listen to some Amiga OSTs.

These battles between the sound of the two systems often seem weird to me, mainly because, for me, it's very different to have this discussion in the current context, with our current musical taste , than in the context of 1992.
If we base our analysis on the history of digital music, where the goal was to reproduce real sounds in digital technology, the proposal of the SNES console was undoubtedly superior. Digital sampling technology was more advanced than FM synthesis and offered instruments in a much more realistic form than FM synthesis technology, whose approach to real sounds (drums, trumpets, strings, pianos) was much poorer.
What happened is that this type of FM synthesis technology gradually infiltrated popular culture, becoming a part of musical culture and no longer just a representative of real sounds but an instrument in itself. That's why today we can appreciate the advantages of the Mega Drive's sound chip, which, despite having less realistic sounds, has a superior brightness and, in a way, sounds quite fresh and modern.
Nevertheless, for me, despite the somewhat muted sound of the SNES, the versatility of a chip that uses samples is much more enriching than an FM synthesis chip.

Speaking from a sound design & composition angle, the most important aspect is Contrast.
When you're dealing with just samples, it's much easier to choose samples that are different and contrast well with each other.
If you're only dealing with FM, that's much harder to do. As FM has a very clear sound signature, metallic. And that doesn't even consider how finicky FM synthesis is, where one wrong move and the awesome sound you have is suddenly awful.
Now imagine though, if Sega had both FM & sampling at once. This would of allowed for that contrast much easier.
Actually... this would eventually be how modern dance music would go. As FM makes absolutely amazing bass tones, and bright leads.

Óbvio e claro que o SNES tem mais capacidades sonoras que o Mega Drive, até porque veio depois, mas isso não significa também que aparelho da Sega tenha som ruim e vários jogos estão aí para mostrar isso, sendo um deles o Streets of Rage.

Lol, the difference between the Megadrive' and Super Nintendo for Donkey Kong's "Jib Jab" is hilarious! With the Megadrive version you can't even tell which instruments are being synthesized for some of the tracks. With the Super Nintendo you can hear that glorious saxophone melody clear as a bell.

The Sega genesis has cleaner and better quality audio, this is because the songs are synthesized in real time, or at least a good part of them are, on the SNES it is different,The songs are made as if they were Midi files, with audio samples of real instruments, so the SNES has a greater variety of instruments, , but the Genesis manages to simulate instruments in an incredible way.. I don't know of a console that has an audio chip as good as the Sega genesis

2 different sound systems made to operate in very different ways. It's like to compare bananas vs apples. There's no way. Fact is: SNES hardware was more prepared to what came next. It was easier to reproduce Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat sounds for example. Voices too. Anyways. SNES was launched years after the Mega Drive to smash it. Not to fight against. And yet Mega Drive could endure for such long. But it's interesting to hear Sega sounds on SNES hardware anyway.

Genesis could sound like a champ or like shit, it was all down to the composers' and sound designers' talent. SNES was a console for 'playing safe' with audio - instruments can be realistic and ideal for more symphonic pieces. However, no matter how talented you are, the SNES had a limit - so it always sound muffled and can even sound monotonous or dead if music is weak. In the hands of great composers, the Genesis sounded so hot and fantastic in a way SNES can't. I liked the choices in this comparison - these songs really expose all the strengths of both consoles.

SNES spc700 is flawed. 64KB is just not enough for instruments, sfx, delay buffer and music driver. Plok and the skill of Follin or the resources of Rare are major exceptions. The fact is that the SNES library of music is not strong. Sample quality and variety are simply too limited to stand up to scrutiny in the present day. The Mega Drive in the other hand has barely a bad soundtrack. Here’s why. Cartridge space. With Mega Drive cart space at a slightly lower premium to the SNES carts and with faster access speeds (no need for storing samples in memory) and the minuscule data footprint of an fm instrument, more room was available for the sampled effects to be played from channel 6 in pcm mode. Also, more instruments were available to the composer, in fact there was practically no restriction to how many instruments a composer could use in their composition. The SNES composer had to think carefully on what could be for into the cart space and used consecutively in the available sound ram.
This meant that by and large fidelity and range of interments were compromised. Another limitation of the spc700 was samples had a tendency to lack proper adsr sections. Without proper attack, decay, sustain and release phases within a sample, the result can sound jarring or robotic or a little bit clunky overall. This is not the case using fm, again, due to the advantage of being efficient in terms of data bandwidth. Many alterations to various aspects of an fm instrument can be affects within packet envelopes to any aspect of that instrument, allowing long, complex sweeps of morphing soundscapes, something completely impossible with simple, very small sampled instruments which have no variables apart from pitch, volume or maybe delay.
In addition to 6 channels, each of 4 combined sine waves, their is an addition oscillator which can be used to apply further depth to the existing 6 channels resulting in some very interesting electronic music.
If you think the spc700 and it’s 8 channels of 4bit, low bitrate, low frequency samples is as advanced as the Mega Drive’s 24 sine waves +lfo filter adsr and packet support for midi, vgm and other formats next to the SNES’s 64KB music ram then you haven’t been listening.
You do yourself a disservice to not listen to every Mega Drive soundtrack all the way through on either big speakers or headphones. It’s mind blowing and the best chip tune music ever made.
Trust me I know, I’ve listened extensively to everything both machines have to offer and really the SNES can not hold my attention. There’s a reason the Amiga and it’s 512KB, 4 channel, 8bit pcm sound is leagues ahead of the SNES and offers a much richer 16bit samples chip tune experience.

    • @Mr.Atari2600

Operators are not channels. They make the instruments for the sound channels.
Although, I have heard of the CH3 trick which kinda turns the 3rd channel into 4 more channels so it kinda adds 14 channels.
But out of all the genesis games & chiptunes I've heard to use sound samples, theirs only 1 sample channel. However, the 52khz thing isn't really 52khz, but actually compressed down to 22khz. So more or less, you've been lied too. Although I have heard that the Genesis could do 32khz.
Also have you not watched the video? he clearly showed what both soundchips are capable of with the SNES sounding completely like the Genesis. Which to me, both soundchips have there ups & downs.
I like them both Equally. :)
