I left my own comment about the day she died. For me the shock was so great that when given the news, it simply would not register. Karen Carpenter? Like, the singer? Dead? Oh, this can't be right. This has to be some kind of mistake. It's been nearly 40 years and I can still tell you where I was when I heard.

Karen had the gift to feel the music and lyrics and find a way to share that with her audience. Her vocals are not flashy with big belts or whistles notes. Rather, she was supremely skilled, able to deliver near pitch-perfect takes with immaculate phrasing, while switching easily between just the right tone colors to carry the emotional heart of the song.

Paul Williams and The Carpenters were always intertwined for me, because of this song and “We’ve Only Just Begun”. Paul is an incredible songwriter. His tour de force was the movie “Phantom of the Paradise”, a Brian de Palma film based on the Faust legend. He wrote all of the music for that movie, which displays an incredible range. He was also the primary character/villain Swan, highlighting his acting chops. I wish I could watch you react to the whole movie! Two big hits were "We've Only Just Begun' ("White lace and promises..."- played a lot at wedding receptions) and 'Close to You". If you like covers, they also sang the Beatles 'Ticket to Ride' in the typical Carpenters' style. They've had many great songs, but even their so-so stuff is easy on the ears and pleasant to listen to. While they had their audience back then, music was trending elsewhere. It's nice that their talents are being recognized in an era of Auto-Tune and synthesized beats. Can't go wrong with a real instruments and great vocals. ALSO, can't discount Richard's talents behind the recordings. He played a big part in their success that many people don't appreciate..

Was blessed to see them in October of 73.I remember that they got a local school(Orchard Park) to bring students in to do backup vocals on “Sing”.Her vocals and Richard’s arrangements were incredible.

Well, for a happy song check out "Close to You" and "Top of the World".
They also have a nice cover of "Ticket to Ride" by the Beatles.
Around Christmas time, any song off their christmas album would be awesome. Love their cover of "I'll be home for Christmas".

Their Christmas Portrait album is my Go-To, play the whole thing WITH HEADPHONES from beginning to end. Seamless (due, I'm sure to brother Richard's fine arranging skills).

That cover of "Ticket To Ride", from their 1969 debut album, was Carpenters' first single. It did fairly well...but was then completely eclipsed the next year by two monster hits, "Close To You" (a Burt Bacharach song) and "We've Only Just Begun" (Paul Williams)...

This is one one of my favorite songs by the Carpenters and the soothing voice of Karen Carpenter can't be matched. All their songs also have so much meaning. This song made it to number 2 on the charts in 1971. Great song selection.

If you're doing a holiday theme, you can't do Christmas without doing The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling" and "The Christmas Song". They did a whole album of holiday music which I play starting Thanksgiving Day continuing through New Years'. Karen's always been able to make you "feel". Not all singers can make you "feel". The radio is filled with songs that are testaments to the ordinary. But in 1971, The Carpenters beat out The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Jackson 5, and Chicago for having the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Group. That's how really extraordinary they are, because other musicians in the academy vote for the winners, and Karen and Richard beat out The Beatles, The Greatest Group of All Time. Amazing! You seem to me to be like a young Richard Carpenter with your interest in music. I hope the future holds for you as much success if not more as The Carpenters' had. Maybe someone will be talking about your music 40 years from now and doing reviews. Wouldn't that be fantastic!

Actually there were two Carpenters Christmas albums, "Christmas Portrait" and "An Old Fashioned Christmas", but the second one was released a year after Karen's death and her vocals on there are mainly outtakes from the first project. (But of course Karen Carpenter outtakes are better than most singers' intended finished product. Several of her classic vocal tracks were work leads, simple rough cuts sung just to familiarize the band with a song. Karen though would just sing them faultlessly the first time out. Her vocal on "Superstar" is like that. With the lyrics read off a piece of paper, that vocal, which ended up as a single and became a big hit, is the very first time she ever sang the song...)

The contributing factor of her death was from Ipecac use. The Ipecac when taken has a side effect, (Emitine poison) that destroys heart muscle. She went into cardiac arrest in her old room while spending the night at her mom's house.

There's a PBS program from years ago about the Carpenters. They still show it sometimes during their pledge drives or sometimes in the middle of the night. It's pretty interesting. You might want to check it out. Richard talks a lot about the music and how he arranged it. When I first started watching it, I thought he really sounded like a musical nerd. I was thinking it would just be them performing. As I watched it really gave me a deeper appreciation for both of their skills.

I just love this song(and the Carpenters). When I was as a kid, like 9 or 10, (about 6 years after this was initially released). I would play this song when I was feeling alone or lonely(long story) and for some reason it made me feel a little better as I felt like I not the only one in the world feeling like that. Plus Karen has such a soothing , unpretentious voice...just beautiful ❤️

Her brother Richard produced and arranged all of their music, and he was brilliant. They did their own layered background vocals. Everything the did was perfection, and Karen did almost everything in one take. She was an AWESOME drummer, praised by very famous pro drummers. There are videos of her drumming on RUclips. She actually preferred drums to singing.
