I left my own comment about the day she died. For me the shock was so great that when given the news, it simply would not register. Karen Carpenter? Like, the singer? Dead? Oh, this can't be right. This has to be some kind of mistake. It's been nearly 40 years and I can still tell you where I was when I heard.
She is singing about depression. Her voice goes straight to your soul. Noone will ever equal her voice. Angels in heaven can only hope to be her backup vocalists

Yes she was so lonely and should have been loved. R.I.P you are so missed. Out of all the celebrities that have died she is the one I cant get over. And all the beautiful music we all have missed out on.
Saw them in 1972, Karen blew me away . She was 1)one of the best female singers of the 20th century -and all-time.2)she was one of the best drummers/singers of all time.

That's incredible!! 😲 Richard said she had just recently gained 30 pounds back to quickly, and it was a strain on her heart. I have always wondered if that was totally true. Did she actually look more healthy? What was her mood like? I can only imagine how sad it made you that next day...I am so sorry. You might have felt like...if only you had known. But, you had absolutely no way of knowing, and what could you have said or done?
Her voice was pure magic. She sang so effortlessly and her voice had such a mesmerizing quality to it. The greatest female vocalist of the rock era in my opinion . . and there's not a close second.
I was a kid in the early 70s who could not sit for 2 seconds -- I was wreaking havoc any chance I got. My mother used to listen to the radio during the day and every time a Carpenters song came on, it would immediately stop me in my tracks. First concert I ever went to was the first Carpenters tour after they had some hits. Karen was the drummer for the tour. Bawled my eyes out when she died.
Your analysis is amazing 👏👏 she was so multitalented. I love this video where she’s drumming, that was her original love. As they grew more popular she was featured more as the lead singer less drummer. Her voice is so soothing.
There's a PBS program from years ago about the Carpenters. They still show it sometimes during their pledge drives or sometimes in the middle of the night. It's pretty interesting. You might want to check it out. Richard talks a lot about the music and how he arranged it. When I first started watching it, I thought he really sounded like a musical nerd. I was thinking it would just be them performing. As I watched it really gave me a deeper appreciation for both of their skills.

Yes her Contralto voice is superb but her main strength is the ability to convey the proper emotion with each note. Flawless clarity and breath control made her performance breathtaking
Right after it ended I said out loud, "What a beautiful song" and three seconds later you said exactly the same thing. This song is as beautiful today as the day it was recorded. ❤️
Karen had such a beautiful and calming voice. This particular song makes me feel happy and sad at the same time. Also, Richard Carpenter was a very accomplished pianist. Many people overlook this.
You take that incredible voice, add the emotion in her voice, the passion and feeling she puts into a song, PLUS her drumming and you have something that will never be forgotten or replaced.
Rainy Days And Mondays is a metaphor. I'm just learning about your channel. You're a gift. Karen was such a great drummer too. She was such a gentle soul.
Karen was a beautiful person. Her brother loved her so much. Such a loss for her family, her fans but more importantly herself. She will always be missed.
No one like her they broke the mold when she was born people said to the voice of an Angel and she sure did and may have voice live on with all the memories of her and her voice and rest in peace Karen Carpenter you are missed sing with the angels
Her drums for her, were a security blanket, she felt comfortable behind drums. it’s where she could hide self issues about her appearance, which is sad because it was all in her head, which was triggered after reading some negative comments about herself in a magazine.
Great memories of yesteryear.. I'm 55 and love these amazing oldies... Thank you Daniel... We lost an amazing voice years ago... The poor girl just didn't have a chance back in those days... Her brother did a concert not to long ago with her on a back screen it was so emotional... She fought with depression for years.
She really first showed her drumming talent live in 1968 when they first appeared on TV. They were called the Dick Carpenter Trio. They performed Dancing In The Street. Karen sang and played the drums in a way that blew me away. She was perfect in her drum rolls as she sang at the same time.
Karen was amazing. You should watch some of the drumming videos of her. She never really found that "love" of her life. She married once and he just used her for her money and treated her badly. A shame she didn't really believe how amazing she really was herself. Really good reaction. Thanks for listening to this one.
Her voice is one of the best and I never get tired of hearing her sing. She’s also a very accomplished drummer. If you’d like to see some more upbeat performances check out some videos that showcase her drumming. She looks very happy and you can tell she’s having fun. Knowing her tragic story it’s nice to see her happy. ❤️
I was afraid that you were going to miss seeing her play drums while reading the lyrics. Glad you switched back in time. Such an amazing woman with a one in 20 billion voice.
Karen had the gift to feel the music and lyrics and find a way to share that with her audience. Her vocals are not flashy with big belts or whistles notes. Rather, she was supremely skilled, able to deliver near pitch-perfect takes with immaculate phrasing, while switching easily between just the right tone colors to carry the emotional heart of the song.
there are clips of Paul Williams as an actor, you'd get a kick out of them. He was always cast as "a funny little guy" on shows like the Love Boat, but definitely got some props for Planet of the Apes. His songwriting skills of course are impeccable, and his most important legacy.
Aside from his acting and songwriting, I always loved his singing voice as well. It's almost like he got so well known for writing hits for others, that people tended to overlook his own singing. He really was a triple threat.
@@margaretsmith756 I remember him having a bit of a lilt when he sang too. It's hard to compare his own version of Evergreen with Streisand's which is just a classic, but since he wrote it he brings something really pure to the table. I always loved his Muppet collaborations too.

Really loving these reactions. Thanks for discovering Karen! And great story about how the song was born. You would also enjoy We’ve Only Just Begun, also by Paul Williams.
The style and choice of songs from the Carpenters were never my favorites, but oh what an incredible voice she had. I really wish she would have lived to sing with Alison Krauss, another angelic voice. Karen's contralto and Alison's soprano would have blended beautifully. I don't know how many times I wish I could have picked her up and held her until she understood how loved she was. Reality just doesn't work that way. I am sure nobody realized the horrible sadness and pain she was hiding inside.
Love this song by Karen. There hasn’t been anyone with her type of voice since. It’s a wonderful song, so simple yet speaks volumes. We’ve all been there. Just blue and sad and yet if you have someone who loves you that’s all you need. Thanks for your great reaction.
Was blessed to see them in October of 73.I remember that they got a local school(Orchard Park) to bring students in to do backup vocals on “Sing”.Her vocals and Richard’s arrangements were incredible.
YEAH DANIEL, THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN GENERAL WAS REALLYYYY CRUEL TO HER ABOUT HER BODY AND LOOKS BACK THEN, IT WAS THAT TIME, NOT ALOTTAAA WOMEN IN ROCK BUT I GUESS SHE WAS THE ONE THAT WAS CHOSEN TO BE PICKED ON! :( SAD SAD OCCASIONS, SHE DIED IN 83 AT 32 YEARS OLD! :( ANOREXIA NERVOSA HER MUSIC WILL LIVE FOREVER, TIMELESS FOR SURE :)
Karen Carpenter was a phenomenal drummer. There are various videos here on RUclips that showcase her drumming. Sadly, most of them are from after the anorexia took hold and she's very thin. She never missed a beat drumming, and never missed a note singing. Truly amazing.
I grew up with the Carpenters I was 12 when they first come out in 1969 she had the voice of an Angel and she was actually my first crush...💙💙💙 They were also the first concert I ever saw I just turned 16, they played in Kitchener Ontario Canada October 23, 1973
Her brother Richard produced and arranged all of their music, and he was brilliant. They did their own layered background vocals. Everything the did was perfection, and Karen did almost everything in one take. She was an AWESOME drummer, praised by very famous pro drummers. There are videos of her drumming on RUclips. She actually preferred drums to singing.
Paul Williams and The Carpenters were always intertwined for me, because of this song and “We’ve Only Just Begun”. Paul is an incredible songwriter. His tour de force was the movie “Phantom of the Paradise”, a Brian de Palma film based on the Faust legend. He wrote all of the music for that movie, which displays an incredible range. He was also the primary character/villain Swan, highlighting his acting chops. I wish I could watch you react to the whole movie! It’s almost entirely camp, but high-level camp; and the music is indispensable. Hunt it down - it’s a joy.
We adored everything the Carpenters did. Her voice is mesmerising and her drumming really adds to the dramatic effect. It was later in the 70s I realised that a lot of their songs were written by Paul Williams, who wrote a lot of hits for others too. I love his quirky voice.
I just love this song(and the Carpenters). When I was as a kid, like 9 or 10, (about 6 years after this was initially released). I would play this song when I was feeling alone or lonely(long story) and for some reason it made me feel a little better as I felt like I not the only one in the world feeling like that. Plus Karen has such a soothing , unpretentious voice...just beautiful ❤️
Two big hits were "We've Only Just Begun' ("White lace and promises..."- played a lot at wedding receptions) and 'Close to You". If you like covers, they also sang the Beatles 'Ticket to Ride' in the typical Carpenters' style. They've had many great songs, but even their so-so stuff is easy on the ears and pleasant to listen to. While they had their audience back then, music was trending elsewhere. It's nice that their talents are being recognized in an era of Auto-Tune and synthesized beats. Can't go wrong with a real instruments and great vocals. ALSO, can't discount Richard's talents behind the recordings. He played a big part in their success that many people don't appreciate..
KAREN, you left us much to soon. But, your heartfelt beautiful music, will continue to bless everyone, with such joy forever. Remember listening to the carpenters, all the time. Know one will take your throne away. RIP - KAREN.

I was lucky enough to see them in concert such a long long time ago.
Wow, you were lucky. I've only seen their concert in Japan
"I Need to be in Love" was the best thing she ever sang, and it said a lot about her.
The Carpenters = LIKE. Karen, you may have been down, but you lift us up every single time you sing. Thank you.
Man I grew up listening to them and I think back then that almost every man and young men fell in love with her and her voice.
Isn't that a gorgeous voice
Phantom of the Paradise is one of my all time favorite movies along with Scareface. Love De Palma.
If you want one sadder, listen to Goodbye to Love. If you want a happy one, go with Sing. This song always gives me a lump in my throat.
We adored everything the Carpenters did. Her voice is mesmerising and her drumming really adds to the dramatic effect. It was later in the 70s I realised that a lot of their songs were written by Paul Williams, who wrote a lot of hits for others too. I love his quirky voice.
This is one of my favorite songs by The Carpenters 💕I adore watching the younger generation discover the Carpenters, they are so timeless ❣️
Yeah, her voice was said to have been as perfect as an instrument. I feel a lot of nostalgia when I listen to them. Nice reaction!
KAREN, you left us much to soon. But, your heartfelt beautiful music, will continue to bless everyone, with such joy forever. Remember listening to the carpenters, all the time. Know one will take your throne away. RIP - KAREN.
Open a phonebook to any page. If Karen sang the names and addresses it would win a Grammy!
You have a lovely face.. very understanding and such a cute way about you… im way older than you but you seem very mature and respectful.. xx
I was in Elementary School when the music teacher introduced me to The Carpenters, so I pretty much grew up on them, I was a junior in High School when Karen passed, and I am not afraid to admit I cried when I heard she died.
