I don't care who you are. If you can look at this girl and listen to her sing and not fall in love with her, you might just wanna check yourself in. That voice just gets me every single time I hear her.
Every single time.
@@Hartlor_Tayley : )
utterly agree, the most pure, rich, warm, intimate movingly stunning beautiful voice i've ever heard..the ultimate storyteller who sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU....
So very true.
@@crystalthomashKC That's quite a yt name you got there : )
The perfection, can’t be judged
I was a 70's teen who was crazy about Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Van Halen etc., but I also secretly loved The Carpenters! So yes, they were a guilty pleasure for a lot of people!
Say 3 Hail Marys and you shall be forgiven my son
My "guilty pleasure" was John Denver!
@@lindamosley922 Mine was Neil Diamond...
Mine was Abba haha But, I love all of those mentioned. Seen Floyd several times in concert along with AC/DC and Van Halen and also love John Denver and Neil Diamond and the Carpenters (Mom loved John Denver and Dad loved Neil Diamond so I always heard them. The radio LOVED the Carpenters which is how I knew them), but the guilty pleasure was definitely Abba for me in the 70's.
With all their hits, I marvel at the sheer beauty of her voice, and there is a touch of sadness knowing in hindsight what she was going through.
Paul Williams wrote this for a bank's commercial. When The Carpenter's heard it, they immediately contacted Paul and said please tell me that you've written this as a full song! He had and Richard did his usual magic with the arrangement. With the mention of "white lace and promises", this song was very popular at weddings for years after.
I think every wedding I attended for years had this song. I remember when he came out.
It was in my wedding.
As I said in my comment in a later interview Paul Williams talked about Richard Carpenter getting in touch with him after seeing the commercial. Paul said even if there was not a full version he would have lied through his teeth saying there was as by the time of this contact the Carpenters were already on top of the charts with Close To You.
"We'll find a place where there's room to grow" is very profound for a pop song, especially one written over 50 years ago. It has everything, Karen's beautiful voice, lovely harmonies and arrangement, meaningful lyrics
The day I heard Karen Carpenter died-February 4, 1983-I was 23-I called and told my mom. She and I cried together. Karen Carpenter is considered by many to be the finest voice ever recorded. Bar none. So sad we didn’t hear more from Karen. RIP Karen Carpenter, 1950-1983
I also was 23. And I'll admit, I cried too.
She was my age. Wow, how time flies! Yet her voice never gets old.
I was a junior in high school when this song came out, bought the single, was closet Carpenters fan. I finally came of the closet in my 40s and now that I 68, I love this song more than ever. Karen Carpenter touched me with her voice. You are missed
Guilty pleasure, yes. The 70's were a reflection of the hippie culture and they were too clean-cut to be cool. However, Karen Carpenter's voice was so innocent and beautiful. They were far more than a representation of the "Lawrence Welk" generation.
You're right Bob. Their popularity confounded even their harshest critics. One of the most popular groups of the 70's.
I love the Carpenters but part of me is always saddened by her death whenever I hear their music
Played at my wedding in 1983. Turned into the story of our incredible 27 year journey together. That journey ended with my husband's death in 2012, however, I have found that our journey continues for his memory will live on forever.
So sorry for your loss but envious that you had the experience of 2 young people starting their life together with that song playing in the background!
@@bmcagent Thank you.
Her voice is so calming
There was a law in the 70's that this song had to be played at all weddings.
True story
Thanks Larry. Great laugh!
I wrote my statement then read that you (finally someone) said it. :)
LOL. really, just uber popular.
her voice is like silk- so soothing and infectious. Their songs are standards...good listen
I don’t remember being embarrassed to admit I liked them but I was just in my early teens. I bet all of those who considered them a guilty pleasure knew every word to every song. 😉
"So much of life ahead..." I can't help but feel a little sad every time I hear her sing that line. :^(
I always felt an emotional connection with Karen. I used to think it was just me but over time I’ve realized that millions of people felt the same way. Great reaction. Amazing vocalist.
Such a great voice that left us to soon.
They actually did their own background vocals. This of course became a huge wedding song. Love the choreography in this performance. So simple and just features the whole group.
I sang this song in my high school choir! A beautifully soaring tune!
Best female contralto OF ALL TIME. PERIOD.
Her voice, the incredible band harmonies, instrumentation, musicality gave them a sound like no other (in a great way) :)
So much range in her heavenly voice. Makes you want to cry knowing she was dying slowly as we watch them put out such beautiful music. #Anorexia takes lives. Sad, sad loss
You’re gonna love top of the world if you decide to hit it. Such an upbeat happy tune
I can listen to them all day. Some of their best include "Only Yesterday", For All We Know, Close to You", Touch Me When We're Dancing" and "Bless the Beasts and the Children".
We need to surround ourselves with those who can help us become our best selves...
By the way, the background singers are Karen and Richard themselves overdubbed onto the track...
This came out in 1970. In the context of all the music of that era, no teenage boy would admit to listening to The Carpenters. You might not change the dial on your AM/FM radio when it came on, but you were waiting for something harder. The Carpenters were what we called a "chick band," a group that girls liked, playing music you could slow-dance to.
Carpenters were sugary sweet, guaranteeing mass appeal at the time, but Richard's arrangements and Karen's vocal perfection have undoubtedly stood the test of time.
I was there at the beginning of their music. Sugary sweet..maybe, but innocent and uplifting is a better term. But what do we have today?
ANGRY, HATE-FILLED, FOUL MOUTHED MUSIC. If you can call it that.. MMMMM, I'll take Sugary sweet .
You are so right. Since my dad passed last year, we have become stagnant. I can't seem to shift out of this bubble of grief. Thank you for playing the Carpenter's. Reminds me of my childhood.
Karen was only 20 when this was released. Written by Paul Williams, "Little Enos Burdette" in "Smokey and the Bandit". The background vocals are pretty much Karen and Richard over dubbed several times.
Truth.
Smokey and the Bandit was actually Alfred Hitchcock's favorite movie.
@@meganparsons9106 Hitchcock was a big fan of Mel Brook's spoof on Hitchcock movies, "High Anxiety"...one of my favorite Mel Brooks films, too.
Richard was a very talented musician himself and an amazing arranger.
I get so emotional when I hear her❤️at times I even want to cry❤️the words are phenomenal their for the youth and I remember this when I was young❤️
Her voice exquisite her singing enchanting her interpretation and phasing Sinatra like and that's as good as it gets
When they were putting their group together Karen said "I didn't know how to do anything"...amazing that
Karen became The Front person
.she preferred the drums but gave in to Richard's request..and the rest is history..God Bless Her Memory
Karen Carpenter did wonderfully on Broadway remake of the play, "King and I." (620 performances) The day of her death, age 32) the Play was closed, for the day. Buried in Ball gown from Act II. Also had TV show. Pure talent.
Always thought their Merry Christmas Darling is one of my favorite Christmas songs
I had no idea!
A few word changes and this became our class song, "Class of 72".
Still need to check out their song "Close to You".
Nice to have some optimism. I have always liked this.
This was used in most weddings throughout the 70's and still used a little today. The reason most people wouldn't admit to liking their music is because it was the time metal, Psychedelic, and the Beatles with their new alternative style was emerging and the Carpenters to the teens was mum and dad type music and yet they topped the charts throughout the 70's ...
I was a 70's teen and always loved The Carpenters. I still do.
This was written by Paul William's who wrote a lot of their hits. He has written songs for others too as well as singing them himself. I really like his singing too.
Aside from several hits, he also wrote the lyrics for the cheesy theme song for the TV show The Love Boat
Ah the Love Boat theme. Can't hear it now without thinking of Isaac's Lament by Uncle Bonsai. m.ruclips.net/video/DKfnsDvaVfw/видео.html
@@sharonm6262 I'm not familiar with the "love boat "
Have you ever heard his song So Many People? Great song from 1969. I loved it when he played a villain on The Wild Wild West. He was a good actor too.
Same for my wife and I. Been married for 40 years and this describes us perfectly.
Since this is definitely a marriage song, I think the line about, "We'll find a place where there's room to grow" is literally about having children. This song has been used probably in a trillion weddings.
This was one of the songs sang at our wedding in 1978. I've always loved the Carpenters!!
They were the picture of people who were sneered at and derided as " squares " back then. I grew to love them as I got older though. They're from my area of Connecticut, probably the most well known locals, as well as Norman Lear.
This song came originally from a bank commercial in California, Richard Carpenter heard it and contacted the composer, Paul Williams, who also wrote songs like Evergreen for Barbra Streisand and Rainbow Connection for the Muppets, and they expanded it into a full length song.
Possibly the only time the commercial came first.
ds9
There's nothing not to love about this song. Love the modulation to that final chord.
Enjoyed your reaction.
I also had the Carpenters in my collection right there between Black Sabbath and the Doobie Brothers. Such great arrangements and vocals.
I'm into my rock and metal but you can't deny that Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices in music.
that song was played at every wedding for the next 15-20 years.....its was so many 1st dance songs
Williams also wrote another Carpenters hit song, "Rainy Days and Mondays"
So true that rock was so popular that the Carpenters had that clean cut throwback kind of sound that most guys did not want to admit how much they liked this magical sound!
Bread is another 70's group with soft ballads. 💜
We I am 71 and I enjoy all kinds of music 🎶 😌
When this song came out, this was played at every wedding I went and most of my friends went. It was the ultimate wedding song.
Karen had such a beautiful voice and I enjoy listening to them 💗
Another "timeless voice" sweet Karen...could listen for hours!, oh, I do😊😊
This was played at many a wedding back in the day. So great. Every word is for newlyweds.
Karen Carpenter had a voice like smooth silk. Beautiful. They had a dozen Top Ten Hits. ♥️🎼🎶🎶🇨🇦
The perfect voice, just amazing.
One of the purposes of art - some say the most important one - is to hold a mirror up to society. That's why there's so much music about universally familiar themes - love, sex, death, loss, etc... it's the same reasons soap operas have endured for decades.
Song ideas from soap operas? This may have happened once or twice. 😉
The" background singing" was actually an engineering technique in which Karen and Richard's voices were layered over and over to give that full round sound. It was brilliant. However, Karen's voice needed no improvements.
The voice of an angel. This song is especially sad bc her life tragically
ended too soon. 🎵❤️
Notice how close Richard stands to his sister. She had terrible stage fright, at least in the beginning, and felt comfortable only if he was near her when she sang. She was much more at ease behind a drum set.
They were popular when there were a LOT of GREAT rock/prog rock bands in the early 70's. I could listen to Pink Floyd, and Karen, and be blown away by both!
Their holiday album "Christmas Portrait" is a gem.
Just put it on.... slap the headphones on.... lean back in your easy chair... and enjoy an hour of great arrangements, music, and St. Karen's voice.
My favorite Christmas song of all time, Merry Christmas Darling. I grew up with the Carpenters and there is no one who has ever touched the purity of her voice. My favorite song of there’s is “Touch Me When We’re Dancing”.
It makes me cry every time even when things are going fine. Just such feeling and emotion.
Absolutely my all time favorite!
The guy on the rockin' the tambourine cracks me up -- he's so into it, LOL!
There are a number of videos that have only the vocal track from Karen Carpenter. Every time I listen to these, I am blown away by the sheer beauty of her voice. Here is a link for this song. ruclips.net/video/QvhE2Xes1h8/видео.html
PS - I was early teens when their first song hit the airwaves, and it never actually became a "guilty pleasure". It was pop, not actually rock and roll, but it was really good pop. Way back before drum tracks and autotune! Thanks, and thumbs up.
thank you for this link. chills.
Wow! Thanks for posting. Never heard only her vocals before.
I think the Carpenters were very talented, but I also think Karen's voice was the Carpenters ! What talent !
Richard Carpenter spent a great deal of time developing his sister's talent. She preferred to sit behind her drum kit, so we can thank him for his support and belief in Karen.
@@myrrhfishify7743 Richard doesn't get the credit he deserves for his arrangements, which were tailored for Karen's amazing voice. He was also the master of the overdub which gave us those beautiful studio harmonies.
@@dtennow they could not achieve anything without each other
This was an extremely popular wedding song in the 70's and very fitting for it too. Also a song called For All We Know was widely used.
Being old, I remember the TV special with Karen Carpenter (considered a fluff pop performer) and Ella Fitzgerald (one of the great voices from Jazz). Nobody in the music field thought Karen Carpenter was pop fluff. Also all the music on Carpenters records was played by the LA session musicians called the Wrecking Crew. They might accompany the Carpenters in the morning, the Beach Boys in the afternoon and Frank Sinatra at night.
I pretty much cry every time Karen sings. Her voice seems to resonate on some kind of love wave. So soothing and peaceful to the soul. Definitely my favorite vocalist. Richard's a gem too.
Another great reaction by you, Daniel! Thank you,
Karen Carpenter and Barry Manilow they were my favorites back then in the 70s and the 80s until today I listen to both of them cuz I missed that music today Karen Carpenter had the voice of an Angel and she will be missed so rest in peace Karen music will live on
I love Karen Carpenter's voice so much, her gentle personality and her good heart that made every word she sang in her own special way a little piece of heaven. I wish she would still be alive today.
Its the mindset that folks have when they say "the Eagles suck".
It wasnt cool to like The Carpenters for many because rock n roll ruled the airways. And much of that was hard rock, poser rock, drugs, sex and rock n roll. That mind set is still there to a degree but in hindsight people realize that this music of the Carpenters just makes you feel really good and not everything has to be Ramones tough and Led Zeppelin buldges.
People might be surprised that Robert Plant, Eric Calpton, Bob Dylan and many many more rock acts loved Karen Carpenters voice and the lush good feeling of The Carpenters. And The Eagles had some awesome hits too.
A good song is a good song, a beautiful voice is a beautiful voice. No matter what the genre.
And When The Evening Comes We Smile So Much Of Life Ahead We'll Find A Place Where There's Room To Grow That Part Always Gets Me Wish Karen Was Still With Us 💔
It’s so great you are helping to keep great music alive, I didn’t listen to 50 years old music when I was your age, great music stands the test if time😊
It was written by Paul Williams and it was for a commercial. Richard Carpenter saw the commercial and loved the song which on the commercial was only a minute long. Richard got in contact with Paul and asked him if there was a completed version of the song. Paul responded that there was and in a later interview said even if there wasn't he would have lied through his teeth and said there was as by this time the Carpenters were already big stars because of Close To You. The rest is history. Paul Williams also wrote Rainy Days And Mondays.
Karen and Richard are performing all of the vocals themselves. That is the trademark "Carpenters" sound, the stacked harmonies.
This week I came across more talk with Carpenter's co-wriiter John Bettis (He wrote for others, too). He went to the same Long Beach school as Karen and Richard. Bettis tells stories well. On the RUclips channel The Tennessean there are 3 segments about working with Richard on the song, Yesterday Once More. I just can't find the third segment!
He worked on 38 of the Carpenter's songs.
Daniel, am 66 years old and remember the day the music died, as well as Jimi, Janis, Jim. Cass and Lennon along with so many more recently. None of them hit me, then or now like Karen's. You are sorely missed.
Five months following the release of this single, the 5th Dimension released "Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes," which reached #17 on the charts in February 1971. Singing a haunting and powerful lead on this enigmatic song was one of the group's two female singers, Marilyn McCoo, another incredible singer from Karen's era. You'll enjoy the bio and history of the lone mysterious composer of this song, as well, Dorothea Joyce. Well done, Daniel!
Daniel, so glad you got to experience good timeless music 😊
My wife and I got married to this song. Forty years ago! Thanks for reacting to it.
The Carpenters had the crazy idea of putting in the middle of a slow ballad a raging Electric Guitar Solo and thus created the Power Ballad that almost every rock band uses to this day! That song was...Goodbye to Love!
The bias against MOR Pop music in the 70's was very high. Hard Rock and the "Hard Rock Lifestyle" were the big thing. Anything else was considered "watered down" and not "Hip". But musically, it was the Soft Rock and Pop songs that have held up well and became classics. Today, the different genres of music live more in harmony with each other. Thanks for all your efforts.
It's a song about a young couple starting a life together and the future was a blank page and the excitement that brings.
This song is about newlyweds. This song is what really made want to at 5 years old! Saw on the "Carol Burnett Show". Fortunately, God gave me pipes! Fun Fact: Paul Williams, who wrote this song worked with many, many artists and sang himself. He was also Little Enos in "Smokey and The Bandit". Their song, "Superstar" was written by Leon Russell who was one of the MOST talented singer/songwriters Ever. He wrote for absolutely EVERYONE, even
When "Karen" had only a positive connotation...
Its easy for people of any age to appreciate the beauty of Karen's voice and Richard's orchestration. But I think it's also true that their music has a resonance for people who grew up with it that is harder, perhaps impossible, for younger people to imagine... Part of it is that the music evokes memories of times and places in our past, when the world was very different from today, and we were younger and were seeing the world then through very different eyes. But this song in particular has another specific emotional impact, because it talks about a time in life that for many of us is in the distant past, a time of beginning and of hope and optimism and opportunity. We can't hear these words without reflecting on how the picture they paint has played out in our lives over the course of the intervening decades... with all of our successes and sadness, joys, losses, grief, and opportunities taken and lost. And whatever that journey looks like for each of us, we know we can never go back to that time in out lives.
This song was written by Paul Williams as an ad for home insurance targeting young married couples.Richard Carpenter heard it, and this arrangement was a huge hit.
I always stop by a carpenter Sweet action so glad to see it is you young man you are a student and a lover of music and analysis
Best female vocalist of all time. Love Karen. Listen to her every day.
So, I have to tell this story, can't help it.. I was part of a Special Choir in Middle School back in 1980 that practiced for about a month to perform at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles, Ca with The Carpenters.. On the day of the performance Karen became ill and the performance was cancelled and my heart was broken for life.. "We've Only Just Begun" was one of the songs we were supposed to sing along with "Rainy Days and Mondays' and a little known song called "Saturdays".. I have no idea whether Karen's sickness that day had anything to do with the sickness that would eventually take her life.. The Carpenters will always hold a special place in my mind.. Thanks for the great reaction vids.. You would probably also like "Bless the Beasts and the Children", a very underated Materpiece, from the movie with the same name, by The Carpenters..
Wow, that must have been a huge disappointment, especially at that age.
@@snakelite61 Yes.. it was Huge.. and you never forget it for so many reasons.. I went on to work in the Entertainment Industry for most of my life and had some cool things and some not so cool things happen, but the Karen thing sort of stays with you no matter what.. Best wishes to you!!
The song was written by Paul Williams and he performed it for the commercial back in 1970.
I might be wrong, but I think this song was originally a jingle in a bank commercial. Richard Carpenter heard it and decided to do something with it. This was the result.
Karen Carpenter's voice was like an angel.
On the studio recordings of their songs the background singers were actually overdubbing of Karen and Richard Carpenter voices in 4 part harmonies...
I like your take on the "room to grow" line. ❤ I always just pictured a growing family, I guess because it's a song about a newly married couple.
Who ever thought a song for a commercial for Crocker Bank would end up a huge mega hit.
