You have stumbled upon one of the best female voices to ever sing pop music. NO AUTOTUNE NEEDED! Karen Carpenter was straight class and we lost her way too soon.
Doc Rich - this performance was from around 1970 or 71, and yes, The Carpenters are brother/sister duo Karen and Richard Carpenter. Karen was also an amazing drummer. There are several videos on RUclips of her drumming skills. She suffered from anorexia and died in 1983. She is considered by many to be one of the best female voices of all time. I hope you will review many more Carpenters songs!
In my opinion, No other singer in history could touch Karen's voice. She was a phenomenal singer and a absolutely incredible on the drums as well. She made it look all too easy
This song was released in 1971. It was recorded in one take. It was that way with a number of their songs. She was that good. The Carpenters also recorded "Desperado" in 1975. It's the best version ever.
The Carpenters were a duo group consisting of brother and sister, Richard and Karen Carpenter. Superstar was recorded by them in 1971. They appeared on numerous shows on television. The musicians are a backup band for the show. Karen was an accomplished drummer, which was her original musical role, but she soon began to sing for the group too. Karen Carpenter’s voice is magically haunting and soothing, captivating and mysterious, light and dark. She engages listeners and draws them into an intimate space to hold what equates to a close conversation with a cherished friend. The Carpenters had three number-one singles and five number-two singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and fifteen number-one hits on the Adult Contemporary chart, in addition to twelve top-10 singles. They have sold more than 90 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The duo toured continually during the 1970s, which put them under increased strain; Richard took a year off in 1979 after he had become addicted to Quaaludes, while Karen suffered from anorexia nervosa. Their career together ended in 1983 when Karen died from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia. Extensive news coverage surrounding these circumstances increased public awareness of eating disorders. Though the Carpenters were criticized for their clean-cut and wholesome conservative image in the 1970s, their music has since been re-evaluated, attracting critical acclaim and continued commercial success. A few of the Carpenters hits are. “Rainy Days and Mondays” “We’ve Only Just Begun” “(They Long to Be) Close to You” "Yesterday Once More”
Sweetie Karen carpenter was so good. Her voice you know it when you hear it. It's sad she is know the first celebrity that died of heart failure cus by many years of the eating disorder anorexia. She was one in a million.
KAREN WAS ONLY 21 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME SINGING THIS SONG, WHICH SHE SANG AND RECORDED ON ONE TAKE! READING THE LYRICS OFF OF A NAPKIN! she and her brother had already had hits like "close to you", "we've only just begun" and "for all we know".. they would end up with the most hits of any american act in the 1970's! and her voice is considered by many as one of the greatest if not THEE greatest female pop voice in history!...
KAREN's voice REALLY ÍS...: ONE IN A MILLION... especially in popular.. soft rock.. 'easy listening' music... BEAUTIFUL..!!! GOD blessed her with a natural warm 'velvet' voice..
Like all the others have stated, no autotune, live performance, voice of an angel, a very accomplished drummer and we lost her way too soon. I was junior high school age in the early 70's and it just wasn't cool to admit that you listened to The Carpenters, but Karen's voice was so hypnotic that you couldn't help but listen to her.
Karen Carpenter was one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. She was a contralto with a several octive range. Her voice was silky smooth with perfect pitch. The Carpenters had a number of hits in the late 1960's and 1970's. Her brother Richard did the arrangements and also sang, but Karen was the voice of the Carpenters. You couldnt miss her voice. You dont find many covers of her songs. Probably because no one woyld wNt to be compared to her beautiful voice. She tragically died at 31 due to a heart attack relating to years of suffering from anorexia nervosa. Her death brought this horrible disease to the forefront and was partially responsible for subsequent research into treatments. RIP Karen.
They were a brother, sister duo. The brother produced, arranged and composed and played the piano. She sang lead vocals and played the drums. They were a pretty iconic group from the 70s recording some of the greatest hits like "Close to you", "We've only just begun", "Rainy days and Mondays", "Yesterday Once More" amongst others. Karen is considered to be one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time! Unfortunatly their story ends tragically with the passing of Karen at just 32 years old to a little known disease at the time, anorexia nervosa. You should definitely check out more of their songs!
1971 - 25 years before Autotune was invented. Autotune can fix missed notes, but it can't inject this clarity and emotional evocation into anyone's voice. KC knows what she's aiming for, then just does it while making it sound easy. She flips upwards with "What to say ..." in that 2nd verse and I am in her thrall. Mission accomplished.
She poured her hart and soul into her singing, I think she really wanted to find a true love she never did find. Which most never do but she wasn’t afraid to show vulnerability,if she only knew how many people love her now still. I bet she does😊
Thats her beautiful voice . It’s hard to talk when he s singing. Beautiful girl with beautiful spirit. Such a tragedy when she passed. RIP sweet Karen.
Her hair is long because she is wearing a "fall," a long piece of hair that would have been clipped on. The top part of her hair is her own, and it is pulled over a piece attached to her hair, kind of like a modern bump it that girls wear nowadays. The side pieces are just a "fall"....that was the style then,,,
She's my absolute fav singer/artist of all-time! I gotta give a shout out to that cool chair & headset. You have good taste & your car must be really awesome!!! 😎
You have to do "We've only just begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays". She is the best female vocalist ever. Props to her brother who sang, wrote lyrics, played the piano, and arranged all the music.
Legendary singer like no other.....a beautiful soul.....love your reaction to this....like you kind of mentioned in that time they didn’t depend on fancy videos provocative dress......it came down to pure talent....her voice.....and you notice the long hairstyle of the time the colours the dress & how she moves to this song....hauntingly takes you back to the 70’s.....one of heavens angels for sure...
The Carpenters released "Superstar" in 1971. They where a brother/sister duo. Karen wanted to be known as the drummer that could sing. As far as I am concerned Karen is the best singer of my lifetime. Rest-In-Peace Beautiful Lady. An Angle on Earth, An Angle in Heave!!
Wish I could have seen you listening to these Carpenter songs for the first time. Rainy Days and Monday’s, We’ve Only Just Begun, Close To You, Hurting Each Other. A lot of great music in the 70’s.
She's is widely considered to be one of the best singers ever, with hit after hit. I think their first was in 1970. Her brother was her singing partner, but more of a back up, and there was a group backing them up. One odd thing, Karen considered herself a drummer first, and she was a multi-talented drummer!! There is at least one video showing her in action. Unfortunately, her brother was her family's golden child, he got into some drugs and alcohol, and she became anorexic and bulimic. She finally died very young while her divorce was to be formalized when she suffered cardiac arrest. Evidently, she'd gotten her weight stabilized. But she was still taking up to 90 pills a day to force her to eject whatever she ate. Great tragedy.
I'm a huge Carpenters fan, and especially a Karen Carpenter fan since I was a little kid when their music was new. I hate to burst your bubble about her hair but she wore wigs. She was well into the years of her eating disorder by then and had very thin hair. Watch the movie it was very good. I wish she were still here. ruclips.net/video/2wNxaw5j428/видео.html
Unfortunately she passed away really young. She was a professional drummer , her brother played the piano and orchestra . She never took a voice lesson , her brother got her to sing while she wanted to stay on drums. She started singing while on drums but she had to stand out in front as lead where she was the most uncomfortable and was extremely shy. She was an amazing drummer
She sang like you imagine heaven sounding. Such talent. I’ve looked through a few reactions on this song and surprised no one has mentioned Luther vandross cover version. I know he sang it on his Wembley 1989 tour. Beautiful version also.💛
Yes, brother and sister. Richard Carpenter is still alive. I think Karen Carpenter died in the 80's. She died far 2 young from anorexia. Carpenters were active 1969 - 1983.
Did you notice how when the corous starts she bounces a little, the reason she did that was because she's the drummer. Bro that was live. You need to check out the video of her drum solo. That's the way they dressed in the early 70s.
Carpenters toured quite a bit and the musicians in the video are the Carpenters band. Basically the live band but they used the Wrecking Crew for recording.
Karen's voice was unbelievably beautiful. A friend's 6 month old grandson will calm down immediately when his mom plays The Carpenters. She said he starts to relax and is soon asleep. There is something about her voice. Also - per Wikipedia, auto-tune was first used on Cher's 1998 hit Believe as a sound effect to deliberately distort her vocals. Now it's used on talent shows, which is a shame.
I love this group! They have been a favorite of mine since I was a youngster. I love your response of this video. Karen had a voice-one in a million! Karen and her brother were millionaire's in their early twenties. You are so right, Karen didn't need to wear provocative clothing, to get people's attention, she just needed to open her mouth, and that voice got everybody's attention. You need to check out more of Carpenters videos, you won't be disappointed. I especially love the song "Little altar boy "! I listen to it any time even if it's not Christmas .That's off of one of their Christmas albums. So beautiful! It will make you cry,and shed tears! I love your review about this video. So nice. 🤗🤗🤗♥️♥️♥️♥️
The Carpinters were a brother and sister duo . However, Karen did a lot of solos like this awesome one which was recordedin in 1971. Later on Luther Vandross did an great remake of it.❤👍🏼
You have to remember in them days they didn't have computers to make the music they needed people that can play instruments. That's why the music was alive because it wasn't artificially created . the instruments were made of wood and strings they came to life when people played them for the music of yesterday was way better it had soul because people played the instruments and people sang the songs today it is all artificial.
You have stumbled upon one of the best female voices to ever sing pop music. NO AUTOTUNE NEEDED! Karen Carpenter was straight class and we lost her way too soon.
Bobby Moore my favorite female singer/drummer! Love her voice!
I wouldn't confine that comment to just pop music. Karen had one of the great voices ever, in any genre.
Yes indeed...I grew up on her, sang "We've Only Just Began" as a graduation song.
@@thewrightfamily369 She was the best.
@@davepeterschmidt5818 I agree. Wish she was still with us! I heard, she'd be 70 something now.
karen's voice is mesmerizing. she is actually singing live here.
She only ever sang live.
@@lorriesardinia5302 Lip syncing was very common in the early 70's. Many of her video's are lip synced. This one is one of the live gems.
Simply the best female singer I've ever heard! They called her 1 take Karen, because she never hit a bad note!
I agree 100% . . her voice was without equal . . absolutely flawless!!
One of the best vocalists you'll ever hear who, from her own point of view, was a drummer first!
it is definitely her voice. she sang like an angel
Yes Yes Yes.
I think the angels would struggle to compete with her !
Doc Rich - this performance was from around 1970 or 71, and yes, The Carpenters are brother/sister duo Karen and Richard Carpenter. Karen was also an amazing drummer. Karen had a magical low register that no other female singer had. That’s what sets her apart from Whitney, Celine, etc.
In my opinion, No other singer in history could touch Karen's voice. She was a phenomenal singer and a absolutely incredible on the drums as well. She made it look all too easy
Unbelievable that this is live. What a voice!
I've yet to hear any other voice like hers or that can quite compare. She was so powerful and silky on that lower register. Its her trademark.
Harriets Music is the closest I've found. Lover her voice almost as much as Karen's. ruclips.net/video/Ok5w0XAeyjo/видео.html
Silky smooth is a perfect description.
I didn't think of her as "powerful" but, intensely emotional. A true God given gift for her and her brother.
She said of her voice the money was in the basement.
Oh that voice!!! Reminds me as a young child hearing it on the AM radio!
It's so great young people these days appreciate Karen Carpenter's voice
This song was released in 1971. It was recorded in one take. It was that way with a number of their songs. She was that good. The Carpenters also recorded "Desperado" in 1975. It's the best version ever.
Most incredible voice! She is absolutely singing live.
Karen's diction was so clear that it is quite unnecessary to read the lyrics - unlike many singers whose words it is often impossible to understand.
True for so many. I can't resist throwing Bruce Springsteen under the bus on that one!
I was thinking the exact same thing when he said let me pull up lyrics.
Julie Andrews also had perfect diction.
She has such an amazing voice. No other like her. Unforgettable voice of an angel

In the late '60s on, some hair pieces were called 'falls.' She did have a good head of hair. However, the voice was all hers!
Did you react to Let Me Be the One? Catchy!
One of the greatest female voices ever !!
no auto tune. only KAREN.probably the best female single ever............... by fuckn ten miles.
Karen had a contralto voice which is rare. The lower register is mesmerizing.
Mezzosoprano, actually.

yes, please do more of the carpenters and ignore the crapola of today.
Her voice melts my heart she is legendary
Karen Carpenter's voice was the same live as on the studio. No autotune at all! Just pure talent from God.
Don't give God the credit
@@Djr67 I will give credit where credit is due!
She was just so God damn lovely.
its all about the voice and nothing else she was beautiful inside and out
No auto tune needed with Karen. Ever. One of the best voices ever. Rip

An angel singing on earth
It’s crazy I listen to to her videos before I go to bed almost every night she is one the greatest voices I ever heard I love Karen

This look was very popular when girls "dressed up" back in '71
Karen was an angel, and we lost her way too soon. When she died, nobody had ever heard of "anorexia."
She's my absolute fav singer/artist of all-time! I gotta give a shout out to that cool chair & headset. You have good taste & your car must be really awesome!!! 😎
1971. Also watch her drum solo...she was INCREDIBLE!!! 👍💖🌟
Yes they are a brother and sister duo. The brother is playing the piano or synthesizer, and harmony back up vocals. Recorded in “70” or “71”
Amazing voice. My favourite of all times.
You have to do "We've only just begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays". She is the best female vocalist ever. Props to her brother who sang, wrote lyrics, played the piano, and arranged all the music.
GORGEOUS voice like velvet. One take. Yes brother & sister.
Also nailed it in 1 take.
Look up "for all we know" from that same BBC concert. She sang as great live as in the studio. And they are brother and sister
Brother and sister duo. There brother plays the piano and arranges and produces their music karen is a exceptional drummer and singer.
There are good singers, great singers and Karen Carpenter.
I saw them back in the 70s. She was every bit as good with her singing AND she was phenomenal on the drums.
Theres no auto tune here almost all her songs was done in one take

Karen didn't need to sweeten her voice, it was perfect.
I saw the Carpenters in the early 70's. It sounded just like the record.

Like like like like the carpenters forever
Scarlett & Gray Block "O". Total class, my friend.
The best. Yeah her brother is on piano
So cool to see this young man totally get off on this song like we all did damn near fifty years ago.
She left us in early 80's
As the magnificent vocalist Karen is, she thought of herself as a drummer that could sing.

Close to You original 1970s

Yeah. Karen has that affect on people.
Look ma, no autotune!!!! And that is no wig on her head.
It's actually from the 60s, but the Carpenter's recording is fro the 70s and is the best.
It's like watching a ghost singing beautifully.
This song was released in 1971.
Auto Tune was known as TALENT back then!
