So Dorothy & Sophia were from New York… Rose was from the mid-West… and Blanche was from the South. So putting these three cultures together to clash constantly was pure genius.
Also, they all of distinct nationalistic backgrounds- Dorothy and Sophia are Italian Americans, Rose is Scandinavian descent, and Blanche is presumably of French extraction. Dorothy was from a working class family, Rose middle class, and Blanche comes from money.
It's roasting with love. For every roast, there's like 10 heartwarming moments that can tear you up. Sophia was a great character. The actress that plays Sophia, Estelle Getty, is actually younger than Bea Arthur, who plays Sophia's daughter Dorothea. They used prosthetics and makeup on Estelle to make her look older.
That's what makes it even funnier Was Betty White was the oldest but plays the least mature. And she out lived the rest. Then Bea and then Estelle and Rue was actually about 10 years younger than the other 3.
Those women were comedy legends long before the show aired and had worked together off and on for decades. There was really no way for Golden Girls to lose.
12:44 You asked a great question that actually has an answer! The reason The Golden Girls got away with edgy humor back then is that the writers knew how to set up jokes with context and trusted the audience to pick up on the subtleties. That required an understanding of universal socio-cultural norms, and then exaggerating them. In this case, the norm is: old people speak their minds. Sophia’s “savage” lines hit because we understand that she's an unfiltered old lady who is saying what we're all thinking. She is not just saying it for shock value. Today, a lot of writers seem too impatient-they don’t let jokes breathe or trust audiences to catch the nuances, which often makes similar humor feel cheap and rushed.
Actually, I remember when this show was current, and it was quite controversial. Not all people loved it or thought it was funny. My grandmother laughed them off; she loved it, and so did my aunt. :)
I'm 38 and watched all the shows with my grandma!! Golden Girls, Designing woman, Matlock, hunter, you name the show I watched all of them and watch it all right NOW!!!😊
The cut downs were off the chain but the show addressed a lot of serious topics no other show would dare to at the time. Love your reactions and y'all are precious!
Yes! I love the way they explain things too! They have such good takes on perspectives from everything from sexuality, racism, sexual orientation, dismissing of illness by medical professionals
The story on Sophia is...she was in a home and had a stroke, which led her to move in with Dorothy...the stroke affected the part of the brain that filters, what you should or shouldn't say....she has no filter that's why shes soo direct n forward....GG trivia
That was the best comedic setup ever on a sitcom. They established from start that she has no filter and you never know how far she’ll go. It’s absolute genius writing!
My favorite thing about her one liners is how her delivery almost always A. Happens in passing and B. Hits the target dead on. She's like a verbal drive-by shooter with impeccable aim.
I'm 60yo so I lived and loved this show. It aired in 1985, . During the first season Sopia played a 79 yo, Blanch 53, Dorthy 54, Rose was 55. The show lasted for 7 seasons . All these ladies had already had extensive careers before this . The casting was spot on , made for some great entertainment.
What was incredible about this show is that it was produced and written by Norman Lear’s (All in the Family, Good Times, Maude, The Jeffersons) protégé, Suzanne Harris. She convinced Norman to do an episode about abortion on Maude. Then she took it a level further on The Golden Girls. She broke everything that was taboo in the 80s. Hell, she hired three of Lear’s top actresses.
It’s incredible, and a true testament to the writers, how well this show has held up, continuing to delight new generations of viewers. That a show about 4 older women roommates ever got produced is a miracle, but that it appeals even to teenagers 40 years later is amazing. It’s also really interesting to see how they covered so many delicate and controversial issues over the years, in ways that were way, way ahead of their time. (And sometimes sad to see, because so many of those issues remain unresolved, or have even gotten worse.) Golden Girls is a show I grew up watching with my mom and grandma, and it remains a show I can watch another 1000 times and still find it as funny as ever.
The Queen Mother in England apparently loved this show and they got the Golden Girls to go over to perform for the royal family at the annual Variety Show that does be on the BBC. It was great! Love Sophia!!
One of my grandmother's was like Sophia's character up until she turned 101yrs. She was so ornery that the normal effects of old age didn't hit her till then. But when it did it was quick. She passed 2days before her 102 birthday. I miss her
The show worked because the writing was absolutely brilliant, which is why it still hold up today unlike so many other 80s shows. It also helped that they were a massive ratings hit (and won tons of awards), plus the fact it was a show about older women. That had never been done before and having the words come out of their mouths versus 20 year olds kind of took the edge off.
@kims.schinkel8212. What's prudish about a mediocre TV show? Two broke girls lacked the spontaneity and charm of TGG. It's just crass nothing else and the writing wasn't that great either.
Another show that holds up well is Roseanne which premiered in 1988. I've been rewatching it and my 36 year old son watches with me every now and then and he has said that he's amazed at how well it's held up.
i wish people will be this straight forward now. the burn would be honest and truthful and you wouldn't be shocked and could insult right back, love all episodes of golden girls.
I discovered golden girls 2 years ago when i was doing my first internship and was scrolling through disney+ to find something fun to watch on my commute. I had heard the song before but never a full episode. I instantly fell in love. It's one of those golden (pun intended) shows that still holds up to this day because the humor hasn't really changed. It is still as vibrant and surprisingly accurate even to this day.
I haven't even watched this yet and I'm looking forward to it! In high school, one of this surly metalhead's two guilty pleasures was sitting in front of the TV with my grandmother and watching The Golden Girls. We would laugh ourselves silly every single time. I miss her, but I think of her every time I watch the reruns.
When you say "old women" keep in mind you are referring to three characters who are in their late 50's. Sophia is 80. But note that in reality Estelle Getty, who plays Sophia, is about the same age as Beatrice Arthur and Betty White, all in their early 60's when the show started. Rue McClanahan was 10 years younger.
I love the Golden Girls so much. When I stayed home sick, I would watch it while my mom sat by me folding laundry. I also watched it with my mamaw when I went to her house. Such a great show. Timeless.
I love the Golden Girls, they were a family, sarcastic humour whilst emotionally poignant. They addressed issues like misogyny, homophobia and racism head on, the writers were excellent ❤
In the first episode they said Sophia had a stroke that destroyed the part of her brain that censors what she says so now she just says whatever comes to mind. 😂
Fun Trivia: Bea Arthur, the actress who played Dorothy is actually older than Sophia in real life. All that makeup and dressing to make Sophia look older than she is, is top notch
Sometimes the best insults are powered by 'next time' suggestions, like there's this one episode where Sophia is reading a magazine and Dorothy asks to see it when she's done but when Sophia finishes she sits on it....................Dorothy "Next Time I'll Ask You To Pass The Candle Stick" :) :) :) LOL
The truth is what makes it funny. I went with my grandma to do hair for her friends at assisted living and 12 year old me heard a lot of this kind of talk. Hairdressers always hear gossip but I was shocked to hear a little old lady say stuff like this to my grandma. They were great though 😂. It’s probably why I followed in her footsteps and became a stylist too, I loved my grandma dearly. RIP to her and all of these very funny ladies.
I grew up watching the GG every week when I was a kid in the 80s, mostly by myself or with my parents. Everyone watched it back then. I remember my best friend and I would have sleepovers sometimes at her grandparents’ house and we would even watch it then. The 80s were just a magical time in pop culture.
The roasting was constant but deep down they loved each other. The show also tackled a lot of topics that were not only important but even taboo to show on TV. That's how my grandma introduced me to social topics I was just learning about.
Don't be misled by the compilations of quick-witted lines, this show had a lot of heart, kindness, and compassion too. They just couldn't resist putting each other in their place occasionally. 🤣
The Golden Girls were on from 1985-1992. I was a senior in HS when it debuted and loved the show! I watched it all throughout college and beyond and still watch it to this day.
I love when people discover the girls. You two are the funniest ones and so real. Piece of show info: Sophia plays the oldest, but was actually the youngest.
Sophia was 80 at the start of the series, and she was supposed to have had a stroke which killed off the part of her brain that censored what she said. This was explained in the very first episode.
Also, Betty White was the oldest of the 4. Estelle had stage freight and dealt with dementia towards the end of the show. She kept forgetting her lines. Bea didn't want to do the show and turned it down several times before being talked into by Rue
The theme song "Thank You For Being A Friend" performed by Andrew Gold was well popular before the show started. It hit #25 on the Billboard top 100 in 1978 and, as I recall, was played on AM radio almost on a loop that summer...
So my age is 61.. back in the day... In the late 70s early 80s... Thank you for being a friend... is not just a theme song to that show... it was an actual song off the radio... they took that song... And use it as a theme song for this show.. I just subscribed... You all came up on my algorithm... And I enjoyed the video❤

Sophia was my favorite! In the show, Sophia was 80 (it started in 1984) and had previously had a stroke. She was hysterical!! It was a great show! Glad you both enjoy it!
_"WHY are they so MEAN to each other?"_ It's an old-age thing, lol. You get old and bitter and cranky, and you gotta unleash it - everyone is fair game, lol.
How was it allowed on TV? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We were fun in the 80s? We were allowed to be sexy and tell jokes and make fun of each other, I suppose. Someone below mentioned that this show is censored now on reruns, and that's a shame. Now it really IS a show about little old ladies being little old ladies. The laughs and the juice came from them NOT acting like the cliche, but I guess that's too hurtful now.
Golden Girls come on in 1985 ( I was 21 years old then) and it was fantastic show. It ran for 7 years and it was top notch comedy. Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche all had great careers before this show. Dorothy (Bea Arthur) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) both played on the TV show "Maude" back in the 70's. and Rose (Betty White) played on the Mary Tyler Moore show from the 1970's. They all done many things and were well known by the time the Golden Girls come along. Golden Girls made them all even MORE famous. A fantastic group of woman that meshed beautifully together and made the Golden Girls a hit!
When this show came out, I remember thinking that these ladies took crassness to a whole new level on T.V. it was kinda shocking yet hysterical at the same time.
the song is a hit single originally written and recorded by Andrew Gold in 1978 titled: "Thank you for being a friend". It still gets airplay today on different stations.
Rose was the nicest and the most naive, sure, but those who watch the show know: when she needed to, she could more than easily hold her own. Ask Mrs. Claxton.
Sophia is Sicilian, quick with a pointed comeback. Now onto the inside joke about Blanche. Her name is Blanche Elizabeth Devereaux, you see, even her initials spell B E D lol, thats where all the mattress jokes came from a place in the heart, it was meant to be for Blanche. Fate weilded its hand mysteriously to her life.
All four of them had plenty of cutting lines, moments of wisdom and kindness, and plot lines that showed incredible depth of character which the actresses portrayed beautifully. If you haven’t watched the whole show, I highly recommend it!
The reference to *DESIGING WOMEN* was a show that also ran during the time of the *GOLDEN GIRLS.* It was also a highly rated show, from the same writers and producers as the GOLDEN GIRLS.
They where ground breaking and tackled topics that no other show would touch with a 10 foot pole. The theme song really captured the spirit of the show.
I was in my early 20s and working 3rd shift when this show went into syndication. It was the only thing on tv besides the news in the mornings when I got home. I begrudgingly watched the first episode, ended up laughing my ass off. Watched it every morning after that. My friends couldn't figure out my I would watch a TV show about old women.
"Thank You for Being a Friend" is a song recorded by American singer Andrew Gold. It appears on Gold's third album All This and Heaven Too. The song reached number 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978.[3] On the Cash Box chart, "Thank You for Being a Friend" spent two weeks at number 11.[4] A cover by Cynthia Fee was the theme song for the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls. You probably hear it on the radio in one of it's many renditions.
Betty White was a popular tv actor/comedian for 40 years before this show. She was a daily staple on game shows during their heyday and a huge animal rights advocate as well.
Every time i visited my grandma she had this playing in the house. I didn’t understand all the jokes back then but when it started rerunning on tv when i was a little older i laughed so hard and It brought back so many great memories with my grandma. This show is epic, hysterical and comforting. And remember as much as they are rough on each other the show has so many wholesome moments and stories. ❤
FYI, in the first episode, Sophia was in a home( "Shady Pines") that burnt down and that's when she went to live with the other women. In that episode, they said she was 80 years old, so since the show lasted 8 seasons, she'd have gone from 80-88.
Betty White was in soooo much prior to Golden Girls and after Golden Girls. She had her own show called “Life with Elizabeth”, she was on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, on numerous game shows where she always came up with brilliant one liners on the spot, and most recently was in Hot in Cleveland. She’s a true icon!
It is worth noting, the "younger three" were in their mid fifties, while Sophia was in her early 80's, when the show was aired... Dorothy was a teacher, Blanche worked at a museum and Rose took a job at a television station after losing her late husband’s pension. Now, 30 years later, it is so strange to see the way we perceived being in (or close to) our 50's then vs the way tv portrays them now (think And Just Like That). With the differences in the way shows were rated then vs now, there was a lot more raunchy (and intensely funny) humour allowed on network tv in Prime Time. Now they run as reruns in the middle of the day. Such an amazingly funny show!
Fun fact: in the episode where Sophia is giving the eulogy, all of the women in the room were people he has slept with and none of them knew about each other until they met at the funeral
Estelle Getty (Sophia) was incredibly shy in her true personality. She used to say how nervous she would get before each take in a scene. But, that nervousness never showed on camera. They couldn't have picked a better actress to play Sophia. Estelle was brilliant with her part.
Just classic comedy by a great team of comedians. Brings back lots of memories and laughs. If you Tee and Tasha would please...consider The Carol Burnett Show (especially with Tim Conway). Their show involved ab-libbing. Absolutely genius and hilarious, and of course "I love Lucy." These are not only priceless but timeless. Thank you for sharing!
After seeing these clips of them ripping on each other like this, you have GOT to see the final scene of the series finale episode. It's simultaneously sweet and hilarious. You'll be crying from both emotions.
So Dorothy & Sophia were from New York…
Rose was from the mid-West…
and Blanche was from the South.
So putting these three cultures together to clash constantly was pure genius.

Exactly. Honestly, this is how all the women in my family are with each other, but we know it’s love.
And the prosthetics had to work hard because Estelle Getty apparently got a facelift between seasons 1 & 2.
Sad they're all gone now, estelle was the first, then bea, then rue, and now betty
Love it! I use to watch all the time!!
Those women were comedy legends long before the show aired and had worked together off and on for decades. There was really no way for Golden Girls to lose.
A couple of them worked with Lucille Ball, too! A pity she never got to guest star on the show.

People weren't nearly as oversensitive over jokes back then
You got that right. We live in a society of snowflakes now.
@@brucedillinger9448Not really, but go off.
@@kitty1376 thank you for your permission. It means so much. 😘
@@kitty1376 Yes Really
@@brucedillinger9448 Yep Lots of snowflakes all over now
the song is a hit single originally written and recorded by Andrew Gold in 1978 titled: "Thank you for being a friend". It still gets airplay today on different stations.
The older i get the more i appreciate woman that just blurr shit out. No filter. Im dutch so im born like this. Makes me feel like home.
Sophia is my favorite. Fun fact, she was actually the youngest out of all the ladies.
Rose was the nicest and the most naive, sure, but those who watch the show know: when she needed to, she could more than easily hold her own. Ask Mrs. Claxton.
Nothing gets better than The Golden girls😂❤
Golden girls is phenomenal.
Sophia is the GOAT!
Thank you being a friend!
You're a pal & a confidant!
Watching this I think of my mom she loved this show! I’m 66 I would love to be sitting with her now watching! Thanks for the memories!❤
I loved that they never had to swear to be funny.
My mom loved this show! I miss her so much. Thank You!
I loved watching The Golden Girls as a teenager in the 80's!!! Great show..
from the two funeral clips: the 1st one is for her son, Phil, who died. The 2nd is for an old acquaintance from her past in Sicily.
Love seeing a male & female pair with chemistry whether y'all are a couple or not. Great job!!! ❤😂
Great show to binge watch. They were definitely breaking molds back in the 80s with their commentary.
Sophia is THE ultimate roaster! We love her!
Sophia's quips were fast and furious 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Every time i visited my grandma she had this playing in the house. I didn’t understand all the jokes back then but when it started rerunning on tv when i was a little older i laughed so hard and It brought back so many great memories with my grandma. This show is epic, hysterical and comforting.
And remember as much as they are rough on each other the show has so many wholesome moments and stories. ❤
Yes please! More Golden Girls! You should watch some of their "Funny Moments" as well.
Sophia suffered a stroke which affected her ability to control what she says. She had to move in with the women after her nursing home burned down.
7:10-I love that roast from Sophia, I forgot exact context, but that's really solid
The quality of the writing on this show was excellent.
Thank You For Being a Friend was actually a hit song from the 70s that was then used for the Golden Girl's theme song.
They always gave sophia the best lines to say, always had me laughing lol
Just classic comedy by a great team of comedians. Brings back lots of memories and laughs. If you Tee and Tasha would please...consider The Carol Burnett Show (especially with Tim Conway). Their show involved ab-libbing. Absolutely genius and hilarious, and of course "I love Lucy." These are not only priceless but timeless. Thank you for sharing!
Nobody can spank Grandma, which is why she can get away with speaking her mind. That's what made the comedy of this show!
Back then, comedy was creative and not taken to heart these days. Everyone is overly sensitive about the slightest words. Goldens girls are classic
Fun fact. DMX was a fan of The Golden Girls.
I love the Golden girls. It’s one of my all-time favorite shows. It never gets old.❤
I LOVE Golden girls
After seeing these clips of them ripping on each other like this, you have GOT to see the final scene of the series finale episode. It's simultaneously sweet and hilarious. You'll be crying from both emotions.
