  • Constant learning and growing is probably the most important ingredient to be successful.
Every time a human being is making something he/she is in a constant dialog with himself.
Time pressure, the desire to finish something quick or within a specific time frame are already a threat against a perfect made thing.
Let me explain: If a violinmaker who builds for his entire life one instrument after another doesn't permit to change or try to change to increase the quality of his/her instruments, very likely he/she will never build superb instruments.
The quality of a high class bowed string instrument depends on the personal growing consistency of the violinmaker.
I, Edgar Russ, dedicated my life to grow in all aspects of my life.
That's why I am sure that my instruments sound perfect and superb.
This video explains you what it takes.
And by the way I deeply believe that if everyone out there makes everything in life with the right mentality, the world would be a much better place.

I’m glad you talk about new vs antique instruments. As good as the old masters were, I find it hard to believe with all of our modern technology we can’t make anything as good as what was made hundreds of years ago. I don’t believe it.

Hi Edgar, thank you for the very interesting video. When I buy violins I use the MAG-ic Probe to measure plate thicknesses. That product works great when connected to a computer or smartphone to measure the plate thickness and thickness gradient. While I have yet been able to correlate plate thickness to sound quality, the thinner the plates, the greater the sound volume and projection. There is still a lot of art creating a great instrument.

Do you ever use a spectrum analyzer in building or determining a violins sound quality? Thanks, and I enjoy your videos.
