- In this video, I take you through the exciting process of upgrading my 2019 BMW 330i. I've recently installed a turbo upgrade and I'm gearing up to tune it, which led me to explore the world of port injection for my direct-injected car.
Ever wondered why BMW reintroduced port injection in their 2023 models alongside their direct injection? I'll answer that question in this video while discussing how I plan to optimize port injection using the controller we're implementing.
Join me as I walk you through the installation of an essential port plate that fits snugly between the intake, manifold, and the engine. I'll also guide you through setting up a controller that communicates with the DME, enabling port injection for supplemental fueling, and making it possible to run on full E85 ethanol fuel.

Ever wondered why BMW reintroduced port injection in their 2023 models alongside their direct injection? I'll answer that question in this video while discussing how I plan to optimize port injection using the controller we're implementing.
Discover the benefits of port injection, especially at low RPMs and during low throttle conditions. Learn how it enhances atomization and potential cooling, and how it complements the 5000 psi direct injection fuel systems introduced by BMW.
I'll also share my insights into why I chose this approach over sticking with direct injection only, the cost considerations, and how this setup allows us to achieve around 500 crank horsepower while keeping costs under $5000.
The Motive Reflex Plus controller takes center stage in this video, offering full integration with ECUtek via the powertrain can bus. We're simplifying the process by using a basic software file to make the Motive controller obedient to the DME, ensuring seamless communication.
Watch as I explain how the Motive controller constantly monitors and optimizes port injection under various conditions, maintaining control even at high RPMs with ethanol fuel. Discover how this setup can provide efficiency benefits, even when running on 91 octane.
Join me on this journey of installing port injection and the Motive Reflex Plus to maximize my BMW 330i's potential. Whether you're a car enthusiast or simply curious about automotive upgrades, this video has something for you.

You are the only one that's providing different and valuable information for this engine thank you Brian. Just put yesterday
b58 part development trickling down to b48 is awesome.
I never considered the B48 before these videos. Currently have a 2017 M240i. This might be an option to save some money but still have massive HP options.
Yeah the mpg is awesome and the handling is fun.
That is the entire point of this guys build. Tons of performance, saves a ton of money. Highly underrated engine.
If you drive it to work your 3L displacement counts for something. The 4 bangers are dead before boost.
@@idokwatcher2062 the guy in the video owned a m340i and says the 330i drives better 🤷♂️
@@postalpanchohell yeah, look at how the entire engine is behind the front towers. It's basically a mid engined 3 series at this point

I got a 2018 f31 330i and I’m loving the videos it’s teaching me a ton about my car thank you man
It’s great to see how much interest there is, thanks for watching.
Really cool watching you push a new platform.
Way over my head at this point, but I like to go deep and figure it out later. Your other videos helped me out though, I believe, with my X5 suspension.
Congratulations on 100k subs!!
Thanks!
This guy is single handily trail blazing the b48/b46. Hopefully these videos will bring some more attention to the platform so manufacturers compete and bring down mod prices, and speed up R&D for newer mods.
Having the dual style injection isnt new as toyota uses it in the Tundras. With the DI motor i think its brilliant. Since DI motors are prone to carbon build up on the intake valves having the secondary injector will alleviate these issues. Now some companies use a sodium filled intake valve like on the Kia Stingers. I say all DI motors should have this option. Thank you for sharing this build with us. This is some of the best BMW automotive content out there. Very clear and precise information. You are appreciated brother!!!
I think the v10s in gen 2 r8 and huracan have both di and port injection too.
the v8 in the ISF also has dual port injection
What do the sodium valves do?
@@sidewayzmike supposed to run a different temp. To prevent the carbon from building on the intake valve with DI motors.
Man I had zero intentions of doing anything to my 330i lol now you have me looking at doing everything you have done I need MORE POWER! Going from my 400whp Subie to this 330i was very humbling
Yeah I thought I could get by stock at first but coming from a G80 I couldn’t lol. Now it’s a real beast but if you drove it normally you wouldn’t be able to tell it’s not stock so you get the best of both worlds
@@VehicularDIY can you give me advice on which oil, coolant, diff fluid and brake fluid to use and spark plugs to use? I’m at 50,000 miles and want to keep maintenance up

Love your videos bro!!! Keep them coming I have a 430i with the same motor!! Looking forward to doing the same!!! Keep the great content, knowledge coming!!! 🐐 🐐 🐐
I have watched the videos over and over again and I never get tired of it, it is truly incredible what you can achieve with a B48. I have a 2018 120i with b48. I wonder, who helped you with the tuning? Thank you very much for all the information

Would love to see some drive by videos showing the new power.
Yeah planning on it.

that is a badass engine to begin with! thanks for all n54 stuff you did. mine hauls ass.
That's actually pretty wild. You only ever see guys shitting on the n20 and b48 but my 2.5l m52 had like 100hp less and was still a riot to drive. These 4pots have tu be fun when done right
The mini JCW/GP3 F56 is about to be a menace on the streets !
I would love that but probably needs a whole lot more other upgrades to get that amount of power to the road being a light fwd car
This guy is a mad scientist !
Interesting, considering Toyota's D4S system used port injection alongside direct injection. Port injection is typically best suited for high-rpm applications and for keeping the valves clean. Perhaps that was a consideration for BMW, after a decade and a half of DI turbocharged production.
favourite build because no one else is doing it on a 330i
Getting my 330i this week
Coming up can’t wait
Imagine a gen 3 b48 in the new gr86 would be a great combination imo
You mean the supra 2.0? which everyone hates? LOL
Great explanation Musa. Thanks for sharing! Have a good one. Dutch regards Nico.
Thanks Nico!
First time i see modified bmw g20 330i 4cylinder with 5xxhp in youtube.I only see other youtube stage 2 around 33x-37xhp only
Awesome videos. You provide a lot of knowledge on your channel. Amazing!!!!
Thanks for sharing. 👍
Would be great to have a beginners list of small upgrades to begin with on the B48. Like what it takes to get to 300 hp for under $1000 or something like that.
Awesome
Hey vehicular DIY, not sure if you will see this but it would be very interesting if you were to try to do an 8hp swap on a 6hp car or just any n54 chassis. I followed 0-60 and he did a good job explaining his process
Very interesting stuff. I’m eager to see more n54 stuff too though haha. Keep it up
I still have my 6MT 135i. Just been preoccupied with this project but it definitely needs some attention in terms of power.
@@VehicularDIY running DAW flow max plus on my e93 with a custom tune with doc. I have really bad AFR oscillation and I have not figured out what has been causing it. Would you have any idea what could be the reason for it?
I really enjoy the 330i video's, my personal favourite G20 model.
As long as you keep the car stock cosmetically it will be a big win in my opinion!
Even if you could go back to the OEM 330i kidney grill it will give it a more clean and traditional BMW look😊
I’ll keep it pretty much the way it looks now but might add in some front seats from a g80 m3. I miss them from the g80.
@@VehicularDIY I have carbon buckets in my manual G87, and they are simply the greatest seats ever!
@@VehicularDIY Wanted to do something similar, do you know if the seats will require coding or if they are direct plug and play?
@@TsGhostsI’m going to go with standard seats, I’d imagine some coding would be required but should be able to do it via esys. I’m hoping to find a pair with ventilation and get that working.
Love the videos man I’m interested in getting that exact car soon and there’s not a lot of content on it 💪🏽
Have to see the 91 tune
What power is realistic on a B48e with Lm450, uprated charge pipe and intercooler and 98 octane european fuel?
Just when I thought I knew a lot about engines , fk my brain cells man.
Could you achieve this with the older generation b48s in the f chassis, or are the newer engines very different? Thanks
B48TU2 has port injection (dual injection) from the factory!
Yeah I refer to it as the B58 Gen 3 in this video.
BMW Einstein!
If for nothing else no more walnut blasting the valves that’s for sure lol
My brain is 🤯🤯
Hy, could you make a video, swapping the model with the n20 engine for the b48. That would be very good for those of us who can't afford the b58 models. Thank you in advance
Awesome! Almost feels like watching a doctor video surgery!!!
Do you know what the power limits are for the IPOS450 without running port injection? Thank you for all the comprehensive videos, really shedding light on B58's little brother.
One of my maps is based on e40 to e50 with port turned off. I’ll go back to the dyno to see what it makes. I’m guessing around 400 whp mixed with 91 and might do 420 whp mixed with 93.
420 wheel is about the max without the port injection as you’re approaching the limits of the stock direct injectors.
I'm wondering if it's possible to achieve 450whp without doing port injection. Would upgrading stock injectors fill the gap in the fueling? I typically run an e50 blend.
Can you post 1/4 times soon with the turbo upgrade? Car looks like it’s moving good
Thanks for the great info on combining PI and DI. It's cool to see how you’re integrating this to help with overcoming E85 fueling limits and its OEM application for the Gen 3 B58. What are your thoughts about using the Spool FX 350 HPFP and IFX350 injectors to get the most out of the IM450 on the B48 with E85. It seems more expensive but maybe easier to set up. What do you think about this approach? Looking forward to your thoughts!
At first I was looking to go that route but the cost was too high and wouldn't be a good example to show you guys. With this build it was all about value for money. Once the spend becomes too high the argument of going with a 330i over an M340i is less compelling. My tuner recommended the port and told me all about the two-way communication and it became a no brainer.
Really glad I came across your channel, really enjoy the information you give. Helps that I have a 2020 330i xdrive, switched out my spark plugs and ignitioncoils today and the first 2 spark plugs had a good amount of oil on them. I'm guessing valve cover gasket? Haven't looked into it yet but I would appreciate your thoughts. I'll be looking forward to your new videos and catching up on the old ones!
How many miles on it?
@@VehicularDIY 35k
@@VehicularDIY brought it in to the dealership as it was still under warranty. They said it was normal to have some oil on the plugs after 33k miles on the spark plugs. Called a few euro shops, few said it wasn't normal one said it was lol. I guess I'll check the plugs again here in a few weeks. Putting a catch can on this weekend, idk if that will help but can't hurt.
"What did it take to make over 500 horsepower on a B48?"
"Everything."
Thanks for the vids. Planning on picking up a 301b48 (MINI F60). Really interested to see if the b48 gets market attention. Would/have you considered any MINI stuff now that WE are more BMW than before😅
This is the same engine that is in the 520i lci right?
I love your videos man, but you look like you need some sleep. dont over work yourself if u dont have to. we all really appreciate the videos
Best channel for b48 tuning thx for doing such good things for us 😌, the only thing what i wish to come in future is a intercooler like the CSF one for the B58 😅
I already got a CSF heat exchanger on order. It’s the same part number for the Supra and M340i. Coming up in a future video. Pairing that with an upgraded intake manifold. Just to maximize what this turbo can do.
@@VehicularDIY sounds great
@@VehicularDIY Hello u don’t mind if I ask you some questions? I’m new about bmw and I have a 330i where can I contact you !!! Thank you for your videos 🙏
Great video man, i was wondering what was the limit in terms of bourse power of its stock internals. I have heard pistons are not the best
My main concern with building a B48 for this amount of power is heat soak. I got a lightly modified 230i, DP, tune, and intake. I already see temperatures climbing to 250+ with ease on track days and I have to pull over and let temperatures drop. Do you think an upgraded heat exchanger is enough to lower things back down or is there more that needs to be done with the tuning?
While my BMW 230i already seems plenty fast for a daily, it is cool to know that there is a ton of room to increase power if I really wanted to, instead of trading for an M2.
External oil cooler and bigger intercooler will give you lap after lap day after day no problems. Also a nice tune is everything, you don't want too run lean that's when egt will get high and pistons melt
Water/meth injection.
@@Wolfpack310intercooler is housed in the manifold….. not really an option.
@@IanBuellI rather not play with that stuff, I’m happy with my power, I just want to run cooler.
get the intake manifold from IPOS
Is there a reason why you didn’t upgrade the DI system instead of PI?
You're making me want a 330i G20, stop lol
Sorry if it was asked in your other videos already but can you please explain to me what is the difference between this b48 engine and b48 engine in for example 2019 Mini Cooper JCW? I've been hearing people blowing their engine when pushed over some 330 whp or so. Are the internals different? Different compression ratio? I'm looking i to upgrading my Mini to higher power levels (currently running just a panel filter and DervTech Stage 1 tune good for about 270-280 crank hp). I have bought the Helix uprated clutch and Wavetrac LSD and looking into getting a intercooler and high flow cat next. Who is your tuner and do they do Mini Coopers? Thanks for the content, I can't stop watching. 👍
Is liability a concern with this build? I’m not familiar with how strong the B48 engine is in comparison to the B58. I would assume it’s a stout engine based on your background & research.
It has the same rod and piston as a B58 so it should handle it provided I don’t push the torque so hard.
Any chance we would see a billet valve cover and billet intake manifold?
Who or what would you recommend tuning and even hardware mods for a 2022 toyota 3.5l v6 with port AND direct injection??? Its proven to be a pain in the butt trying to find parts and people to upgrade a xle highlander 😢
🔥🔥
Vehicular DIY, do you have references or documentations proving that BMW isnusing dual fuel injection for their b48 in 2023? Will this apply to the 230i?

What tuning potential does the M235i gran coupe have? I heard its a upgraded 330i engine but can have heating problems when tuning.
How do you unlock the speed governor in these cars?
Anyone know what a good stage 1- stage 2 company is for the b48?
Hi Musa! What is your 100-200 time?
Can this stufff for older bmw (n20) ? I know it diffirent bore type but hope it still work on.
So I'm assuming that the stock fuel system is inadequate to run E85? Would the stock components support E30 or E50?
Wait, my 2023 330e has port injection? Is that what you said?
Since its a aftermarket turbo did you need a aftermarket turbo inlet?
Is the b48 in g chassis different than the one in g chassis cause I really wanna go in with the build I have a 2017 330i

Did you move at some point? When I used to watch your N54 videos, I swore you lived in Texas lol
Yeah I moved from west Houston.
How high could you theoretically increase the b48 redline? Would be nuts to see it redlining at 8500
I think the hydraulic lifters would limit it to around 7000 rpm.
By chance will you ever show your results on 91/93 tune when you go again even though I know the whole point of what your doing is to just go straight e85
I will yes.
what is the 100-200 kmh time ?
Musa! I need your help 🙏 who can I trust for rebuilt n54 injectors. Having 29e1 errors on my wife's e93 2010 n54.
From my experience even index 12 injectors go bad when using ethanol. If it was me I'd be looking for a set of index 10 or newer from a lower milage car that was stock and didn't run anything but pump gas. A set of 10 or newer injectors with less than 50K miles could last longer than a brand new set of 12s that were run on E85 for 20K miles.
so you think port with a reflex lite on bm3 wouldn't be as safe as a port injection with reflex plus on racebox? (for full e85)
Let’s just say I wouldn’t have wanted to push this far. If you’re aiming for less power then it’s less of a factor. It can be safe enough and a viable option but not to get the most power out of the engine imo.
Where did you buy the spare tire kit? Since I switched to non-RF I need a spare tire.
It was an OEM option.
How with transmision reliability when such hp? According to wiki, in G20 with B48 used ZF 8HP51 (max torque 500 nm/369 lb ft)
Same transmission in the M340i so it can handle it luckily. It is actually under stressed.
Wait, how did overdriving the N54 HPFP work out for you long term? Im trying ti decide between port injection and overdriving the HPFP 5:21
I used a Helix 4x overdrive kit from Spool Performance. It was fine up until I sold the car. If your car is manual and has over 150k miles I’d look at upgrading the timing set to ensure the oil pump chain and guide are strong enough to handle the additional load.
Can you hear the big ipos turbo at spool? Just wondering, as i can hear my stage 2 turbo quite a lot.
Yeah I can but it’s subtle with the stock air box. Just a muted boost whine sound and a slight big diesel turbo sound when coming back to idle.
BTW, Is there a hot climate air duct for the G20 Series Intake? Like the one for F30's?
Stupid question but just to verify, do you have to take out your original injectors or do those stay in while using port injection?
You don’t have to touch the stock DI fuel injectors.
