It looks to me like these Maks have a higher gear ratio on the high speed than most 2 speeds. Is that correct and if so is that something that you like about them? I’m wanting to get a good bluefin setup that I could also use for rockfish. Thanks.
@@joeprimal2044 I really don't have enough experience to offer you any advice. Kinda new at the blue fin tuna game, have only been on 3 two day trips. It was a coin flip for me, was either gonna go with shimano talica or the makaira way. At the end having those comfortable handles and the way they looked was the deciding factor for me. Also good warranty and they do end up cheaper, you have to upgrade the handles on the shimano and at that point cost goes $150-200 more per reel. Only advice I can offer you is that they are a bit on the heavy side and maybe I could have gone on the 20 size with a talica since they are lighter and having the 20 and a 500gram jig wears you down. Thanks for watching!
Perfect set ups. The 16 is a wonderful 100# reel . And extremely great 80# I fish that on a 60-130 Jigs n heavy singker rigs My 15t I use on a 50-80 Great for 60# . Sinker rigs n heavy fly line
Nice looks like we are running almost identical set ups. I also use my 16 for daytime jigs and sinker rig and my 15 with 80 braid to 50 or 60 floro for heavy fly line. Thank you for watching and commenting, tight lines!
Nice setups, i have similar but I couldn't image night knife jigging on that Mak 20 with a UC invictus for more than 15 minutes with a 500g knife jig, I actually prefer the Mak 16 on the UC Viper, or most recently I got the Daiwa Saltiga 55, my new favorite night time knife jig reel.
Yea agree those set ups are heavy and you are hoping you get bit immediately otherwise they wear you down. I got lucky the hot jig on my last two day trip on the New-LoAn was the 300gm sk jig. I started with the 500 rip roller as they were deep and was very windy but they weren’t hitting it. The 20 is big and heavy and overkill in most cases, I only use it for the night jigging cuz you never know what you gonna hook. Also I lost a few hundred feet of braid in a epic tangle and still has enough line to keep using it. The viper with the 16 did not get to use as much. Had it rigged as a sinker rig which we did not do on that trip, maybe next trip.
@@naskofilms4077 I was using 350gr RipRoller and 300gr Nomad streaker, both landed 2 x 80-100lb tuna, night jigged for 3 hours but I was using Saltiga 55 and Mak 16. Good luck on your next trip. I am done with BFT, too much in the freezer just waiting on the YFT, YT and Dodos now.
So far after a few trips I love them. They are a bit on the heavy side but are awesome. I have a few avets and definitely prefer the Makairas by far. The power handles are just perfect and come stock on all sizes. I use my MX raptor for my 30 set up only now, for anything heavier I go for the makaira.
What a great lineup with the UC rods 🙌🏻 Can you please share how many yards of braid you were able to fit on each reel? And what brand/type of braid is on each?
Hi, all 3 are spooled with izorline braid, the 16 and 20 are color metered. The 15 has a bit over 400‑YDS OF 80‑LB. The 16 600‑YDS OF 100‑LBS and the 20 with 130-LB forgot how many yards but it’s enough to land a caw. I got into a huge tangle on my last trip and lost like 200 feet, I am assuming it has 700+ yards still left. Thank you for watching
Ive read a few articles stating Makaira has issues with their drag systems? Have the fixed that issue. its the only thing holding me back from buying one. I know my Avets are rock solid and have never had an issue. Love the looks of those Makairas.
Yea I seen a few videos on youtube with drag skipping but so far I have used them on 3 two day trips and havent had any problems. So far I am super happy
Some Mak 20’s were known for skipping a few years back. Okuma has a 5 year warranty. No one else offers that. You can send it to them for repair at no cost. I own a 16 and it has never had any issues. The drags are solid. They are built to perform out of the box, no tuning required. You buy it once and that’s the last one you’ll ever need. Good luck on getting that tuna.

Nice set ups. I have a mak 16 10th anniversary blue edition with a phenix axis 80# setup. Works great. Nice video. Buy it once, buy it for life. Good luck. What boat you going on?
I just came back from the producer overnight trip, ended up with two nice size yellowtail and one small grade bluefin. And two day on the New-LoAn, lost one nice size bluefin at the rail and landed one 80 pound bluefin on the makaira 20 set up on a 250 sk jig during the night bite.
I love it, fished with it on 4 trips. Had it with me on a couple 2 nighters and couple overnight trips. Kills anything under 100lb fast, haven’t hooked anything big yet. Only downside is it’s a bit heavy and so is my rod and if I have to drop a 500gr jig I am begging to get bit fast before my arms get tired.
@@Henrys_Hooked The 16 definitely, it has holds plenty of line. The 15 I would only use during the day bite for sinker rig or smaller jigs like colt snipers. I saw one guy fish the 15 on a two nighter on the new loan he landed 7 but they all were under a 100. For the night bite I would go 16 or bigger
