Never liked okuma till many years ago when i got a cedrose fly reel and i still have it today. Its a killer reel. Getting in my first 50w reel and its a makaira dolphin edition for catching shark and grouper in florida as well as bluefin tuna and makos in mass.
You'll love the new reel, and I share same opinion regarding Okuma as you mention. I was not a fan until they came out with their newer designs about 13 or so years ago. They stepped up their game, they listened and they have become a major player. Okuma quality has improved, their higher end products like Makaira series reels are state of the art and what other manufacturers have tried to duplicate or use as guides for improvement of their reels (Penn comes to mind...). Warranty service is exceptional, warranty coverage is the best in the business. Their rods are excellent, some of the best values in the market.
Yep, much younger back then Chris...but the aging had more to do with trying to run a small business in the late great state of California (with two audits each taking over a year to complete) than the years themselves. Greedy bastards... Okuma has come a long way, too. I was early recognizing these groundbreaking reels, the rest of the fishing community came to same conclusions I did - great tools for fishermen!

I am trying to decide on a new land based shark fishing reel and I am stuck between these options: Okuma Makaira 130 Shimano Tiagra 130 Penn International 130 VSX Could I get a recommendation from you?
+Nelson Flores Sure bet Nelson, though you might also want to check the 16 size. Very similar capability, smaller and lighter - more comfortable to fish for most folks
+Nelson Flores Question is how many pounds of drag you intend to fish. 100# topshot, probably 30#'s of drag will be used - setting the reel up properly with the drag set at 30% of the line test. At that level, 100# ToroTamer hollowcore braid will test out above 120#'s, and gain you capacity over the 130. The 130 independently tests out at over 180#'s. So, I'd only go there if you were thinking of pulling greater than 30#'s of drag, say 40. This thinking works if you are going hollowcore with an inline rigging connection of your leader or wind-on leader. If instead you are going with a knot connection, then yes i'd agree with you and bump up the braid test.
+Nelson Flores At that point, yep go 130# on the braid and I'd be inclined to bump up the leader test from 100 to 130 or greater - using a heavy, conservatively rated mono with high abrasion resistance.
Depends upon the marlin species, blacks, blues or striped. It's a question of size of fish, where you're fishing... Here in SoCal, a MK 10 would be adequate for the vast majority of marlin we're likely to come across. Going to a another area, could be a much different situation.
I'm no fan of shimano, consider the talica reels overpriced and under performing. Between the Raptor and Makaira, it's a question of application and line test, that would point me to the reel preference. I own both, several of each mnfg's products. They have served me well.
No recommendations without knowing the line test being used and the style fishing - jig or bait. I don't check in on youtube all that frequently, best to contact me through our shop's email or message board, both can be located on our website's homepage. www.charkbait.com

What did you get
+charkbait will the 3SEA be fine for bottom fishing for warsaw grouper 150-200lb ?
+Nelson Flores Sure bet Nelson, though you might also want to check the 16 size. Very similar capability, smaller and lighter - more comfortable to fish for most folks
+CharkBaitUSA I was thinking the 30 since we'll be fishing 400 ft water. want to spool it with 130# and a 100# topshot.

They look good. Honestly, would a 50w or 80w Makaira make a good first Marlin setup??

Which reel would you use talica avet raptor or makiara

+CharkBaitUSA what reel would you use for deep dropping in about two hundred feet for aj and grouper
