Long Range Fishing Chasing Marlin on the Kayak Fresh N Salty Style
What and Epic trip!!!
Went out with the Fresh N Salty Crew way way out there chasing pelagic fish.
Kei ended up hooking a huge marlin that dragged him 11.5 miles for 5 1/2 hours.
Here is most of the footage I was able to take while trying to keep up with
him while he was getting towed 2.5-3 miles per hour. The 3 of us survived
after we got some help from friends. We ended up with 35+ miles that day none
stop pedaling from 5:30am to 8pm and we still had 12 miles back to the launch
going against current and wind that would have taken us 7+ hour to get back.

First time putting the compass in the water. So far I am loving it, its so light to load and feels so light on the water very peppy and nimble. Definitely doesn't feel as stable as the outback probably because the seat sits a bit higher than how I was on my outback. But so far I am really happy and not regretting switching from my outback.

I got the 16 30 and 50 missing the 15 and 20 in my arsenal
Nice! The15 is the one to get next lol, it gets a lot of use during the day bite.
Which harbor is this ?
Daina point
@ you are the 2nd person I saw on RUclips catch a marlin on a kayak off Dana point. 😠 that’s it! I am doing it and taking my PA14 out to Dana Point
@@Oo7Hola Join fresh and salty kayak group on Facebook, this kinda trip was organized twice this year and definitely gonna happen again in 2025 when the tuna are close by to shore. Kei organizes and posts an open invite for anyone who wants to join there. It might be a bit hard to do on a PA as we cover a lot of miles but if you got some assist motor on it you should be ok
@ good to know definitely will do that. I am working on getting a motor. Can’t decide if I want a Newport 180 NK electric or an outboard.
Didn't think Lincods came this far south!!!
Yeah they are not as abundant as up north but there are more than a few spots that hold some around.
How do you like those reels? I've only used Avet but those look really nice. I see alot ppl using them
So far after a few trips I love them. They are a bit on the heavy side but are awesome. I have a few avets and definitely prefer the Makairas by far. The power handles are just perfect and come stock on all sizes. I use my MX raptor for my 30 set up only now, for anything heavier I go for the makaira.
A year later, how do you like the 20?
I love it, fished with it on 4 trips. Had it with me on a couple 2 nighters and couple overnight trips. Kills anything under 100lb fast, haven’t hooked anything big yet. Only downside is it’s a bit heavy and so is my rod and if I have to drop a 500gr jig I am begging to get bit fast before my arms get tired.
What about the 15 and 16? You think you could kill a 150-200lb fish without chasing?
@@Henrys_Hooked The 16 definitely, it has holds plenty of line. The 15 I would only use during the day bite for sinker rig or smaller jigs like colt snipers. I saw one guy fish the 15 on a two nighter on the new loan he landed 7 but they all were under a 100. For the night bite I would go 16 or bigger
Dont want to burst anyones bubble but this is not rough, its normal sailing and if the wind was 25 knots (force 5) he'd be well reefed and lots white crested waves and going backwards - 40yrs at sea and owner of Hobie Compass
It was for sure very rough and gusty, GoPro tends to smoothen things up and based on Windy.com it was 25 mile winds. Coast guard came twice to me to ask if I was OK. All the sailboats quickly went back into the harbor.
That’s such a perfect set up , I have a Chevy Equinox with roof rack and have been putting it on roof for past 3 years but will definitely use this set up going forward . I never felt comfortable with kayak strapped on roof , especially when traveling on highway with speeds of 65 MPH and just upgraded to a heavier pedal kayak so this set up is perfect solution . Thanks for posting
The only downside is if you get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic it feels kind of funky if someone is fallowing you too close but yea this is the way to go. Thank you for watching
I’ve swam through that 😂crazy cave… we rented jet ski’s out of Long Beach and they let us swim through and met us at the end with our jet skis. Never wanted to get out of the water so bad 😂😂😂
It was awesome on a kayak I think we went trough it like 3-4 times. If you go to San Diego at La Jolla shores there is some pretty awesome caves there as well that you can book a kayak tour to explore.
How do you like having the large kill bag on the bow? I tried it once on my Compass and found that it was a lot harder to steer because of the added weight on the front of the bow.
I honestly don't feel any difference in steering. I usually have either 6lb of ice or 7-8 small frozen bottles in there and if there is a lot of fish in there that would be a good problem to have. And its the only place I can have it as I have my livewell tank on the back.
17 miles is crazy even with great conditions. I'd still be out there. 😂
Yea this definitely was a bit crazy.
Crazy kqyakers 😂
Thank you for watching!
I would’ve tied my kayak to his kayak and went for the ride! Lol
That’s a great idea if we only knew it was gonna take that long.

Yea its simple and works perfect
@@naskofilms4077 thx!
ty u just gave me an idea! how did this work out?
From all the mounts I have used both the drive mount or the rear mount option I like this the best. Its easy to transfer from kayak to kayak if you have someone with you and needs it or just leave at home and there is no extra stuff on the kayak.
Not a lot of people are aware that there's a submarine canyon right off Redondo Beach. Noce work

Only to pop back up later.
It was in very shallow water and swam back down pretty health. It just needed some reviving as it was tired from the fight.

How did you register your kayak???
You have to visit DMV and fill out an application, you gonna need to bring a bill of sale.
Now you are finally believing in slow pitch?
Slow pitching is fun! gotta buy more jigs now

Have you been using it? Hows it holding up after a year?
I returned it and bought the 165qt from Costco, much better cheaper and larger. it’s much better www.costco.com/igloo-165-quart-maxcold-chest-cooler-with-butterfly-quick-access-hatch.product.100894821.html
@@naskofilms4077 I'm not sure that bigger cooler is better. That 165 quart lid with those flip hatches seems like it's a bad design
@@snakeclaw I use it only to to bring back the fish I catch on the charter boats so the larger size works better for me and I really only need it to hold ice for 3-4 hours. Agree on the flap I wish they had a solid lid on that size.
I also ended up with a set of makaira sea II. I went 15, 20 and a 50w though.
You made a good choice they are awesome reels. I fished with them all last year on 4 trips and loved them. I bit on the heavy side but I am very happy with them.
Hey Nasko! I was wondering how the adjustments were to the handle with the longer version of the screw and if so, what size screw did you use? Thank you!
Its perfect now, hasn't gotten loose been out 4-5 times. Don't know the exact size I just went to the hardware with the screw and found one that's 2mm longer. You cant really fit a much longer as the brass insert is shallow. But the 2mm extra length must of did the trick for the blue Loctite to do its job.
@@naskofilms4077 awesome! Thank you so much!
Use a thinner tape as first layer. Can even use construction heavy duty for the hole openings
It doesn't matter what tape you use, at some point the rim tape can fail again and air will go into the rim. I have added the ENVE Pressure Relief Valve Stem Nut to my valves, its only $5 and suppose to solve this problem.
@@naskofilms4077 there's more fabricy type rim tapes for narrow rims. This tape ripped due to inside burr or debris that got under. Therefore type of tape actually would matter a lot. None would help from spoke puncture, right

Evala Nasko! Need your recommendation... I've been fishing from an inflatable Sea Eagle skiff, but after a recent encounter with a bull shark in the FL Keys decided to switch to a rigid kayak. Would you recommend an Outback or Compass if I am not going to do any mods? What do you miss the most since your switch? Is the Compass significantly faster than the Outback? How does it handle offshore swell? Thank you again for the awesome review!
Merci! I sold my outback and never missed anything about it. The compass is easy to transport and rooftop on car, move around with the cart and drag on the beach sand. On the water it feels peppy and nimble, its a bit faster and gets up to speed faster and turns better. Its just as stable as the outback and handles big swells just as good. Also compass is better for surf launches. That being said if you are not gonna do any mods I suggest you get the outback. The compass stock is just not good enough for fishing. Thank you for watching!
@@naskofilms4077 Thank you Sir! I appreciate the feedback. Going to go with the Outback
Thank you 🙏🏾

My kayak has hit 5.3 with the new PP-768 J2 Bixpy on my gravity rudder. You can put 3 Bixpy s, you're still going to hit 4 too 5mph. Better off going with the NK-300, hits approx 7mph, for $1,300.00. I love my Bixpy, because it's simple, it has its own battery. And not a million cables to run. 💯 🛶 🎣
Yea agree the bixpy battery and simplicity was the reason I bought it.
@@naskofilms4077 I love it. I know the nk-180 is the same price. But then you still need a lithium battery, and mounting brackets, and running cables. And the NK- runs approx 4.5 to 5.5.. But if I do upgrade, it'll be the NK-300. It's $1300.00. And it runs at least 7mph. Extremely fast on a kayak. 😎 💯
I love the Hobie compass! Had mine since 2019 and it’s great. I never needed more space nor use all the space other than when crabbing+fishing but even so still feels great. It’s light and easy to drag on beaches, that front mesh pocket come in so handy just sticking things underneath it. I have never feel like I needed a bigger kayak. I think you’ll like it, it cuts through water really nice and a cleaner look.
Thank you Nhia, yea so far I am loving the compass!

Hey mate, nice session. Absolutely loving the compass here and thanks for your previous help when i was asking about them :) Hey just out of interest what have you got set up down the side of your seat where you put your pliers in? Love the rod tube setup around the back where you sit your rod when working on the line too. Hey would love to see another video of your current fishing setup now that you have been using it for a while. Cheers
I did a few additions to it recently that I am really happy and excided about. Will do a complete walk around with all the new mods in a few days. Thank you for watching!
@@naskofilms4077 sounds awesome mate 👏 looking forward to it 👍😁
Hey, how have you found the Berleypro handle? I finally got my hobie compass and love it but was interested in the steering handle upgrade. Is that the higher profile (outback version) of the handle? I see there is a slightly lower profile version of the handle listed for the compass too. I'm liking the sound of the higher profile for getting a good grip on. It looks like a great addition just was interested on your thoughts .thanks
Hi, I have the raised on as that one was on sale at the time I bought it. I think both of their versions are fine. I love mine I definitely recommend it as the stock steering handle on the compass sucks. Only problem is the screw gets loose on every other trip. I have blue loctite in there but still have to tighten often, it might need a bit longer screw than provided or I might have to use red loctite.
@@naskofilms4077 thanks mate. Is it screwing in by much? You might be right, if it’s only getting held by only a thread or two it may not be enough to hold even with the loctite?
I got a compass and an outback both camos the outback is way toooo heavy and I tend to use my compass a lot
Yea one of the reasons I got rid of the outback. So far I love the compass and very happy the way I have it set up. Will do an update video soon with some of the more recent updates/upgrades I done to it. Thank you for watching!
What month was this?
It was late October last year, its usually when the bonito show up around here. Lasts about a few weeks depending if the bait sticks around.
I have also just bought a Compass. I have a PA14 as well but wanted something I could car top. After using it several times I miss a few of the features of the outback (I've owned 3 outbacks) First thing was the dual steering, then the rear grab handle but the biggest thing I miss is the seat. I find the compass seat terrible with the plastic bar at the back, bottom being very uncomfortable. I think I am going to sell it and go back to an outback purely because of the seat. Have you tried a Revo 13? Ive had four of those and find them excellent in the rougher conditions.
Hi, yea I do miss some of the outback features but so far very happy I went with the compass. The dual steering was nice but you get used to having one, I upgraded the one on the compass with the berley pro handle and so fat that works for me perfect. Having one really good handle makes up for not having two. My 1st kayak was a revo 13, I loved it but was not perfect for fishing was a bit cramped in it and also was a bit tipsy when I use the sail. For the compass seat if you dont recline it too much to the back so you dont seat too far back you dont feel the plastic bar and also adding a section of pool noodle helps a lot.
Hey mate how have you found the compass? Especially compared to your old outback? I’m looking at car topping mine when travelling so the weight is a concern. Also have you tried standing and casting out the compass? Just interested in the stability of it. They both look like great kayaks just not sure which one to go.
Hi, so far I am really happy I got rid of the outback. I added a few things to the compass and now its exactly what I need. I never have the need to stand and cast, I am always fishing sitting because I am always in the ocean and I cant fish and keep constantly an eye on the swell and wake boats around me make. Stability wise the outback is a slight winner but the compass is just perfect and stable enough and its faster and so much lighter making it a joy to car top and move around. Its always dry inside not a drop of water goes inside the hull. Only thing I miss is the larger space for the fish finder transducer.
@@naskofilms4077 Thanks so much mate. I think there are a few things pointing me more towards the compass like you said. The speed and agility as well as the weight making it easier to car top. Also I like how it cuts through chop better than the compass and has less bow slap. Also the lower price. I know the outback has a better seat and storage but I like how you can customise and add things to make the compass a great all rounder. Standing stability is good to have but realistically I will be sitting the bulk of the time. Thanks so much as it’s great to get this different view on the models as they are both awesome yaks. Also loving your channel mate and just subscribed earlier 👍👏😀 Hey just on another note have you tested what kind of speed you can get out of your compass with the turbo fins on the mirage drive? I’d imagine it’s pretty fast for a yak without a motor.
My top speed is 6mph but that's not something you can hold for long time, just a few seconds. Most of the time I am cruising 3-4mph. As far as the seat goes I think I like my compass seat better. The outback seat is a pain when you have to put in the kayak and mine always made creaking noises on one side. The compass seat is easy to put in and is wider so again a lot of things come to personal preference, ideally would be nice to try before you buy but you wont really know which you prefer until you spend some time on the water. Lots of great deals on both kayaks nowadays on the used market so don't make your decision based on price, the price difference is really not that much. Thank you for the sub and watching! @@clintvogel
@@naskofilms4077 Thanks so much mate. I really appreciate your feedback. Loving your channel and looking forward to watching many more of your clips 👏👍😀
Looking good and organized. I am in the market for a good bag and this may work. What’s your opinion on the quality of that materials?
I love this bag and would buy it again if I have to but it was very hard to find as its discontinued. I love the larger and longer boxes as it allows me to store all my jigs in them and not have to bring a separate jig bag. Also plenty of space for multi day trips. The once that have the rod tube holders on the sides are also nice and everyone seems to favor them lately especially if you like having one rod close to you when the boat stops and also a place to put the rod to re tie. Thank you for watching!
