Love it!!! almost has a chewy image quality. Voigtlander is the most proactive lens maker in the world today. wow I'm so impressed with their effort and output of amazing glass. Also great shots!!!!! I loved the way you, the lens and the models all work together for these yummy images.
Hello Matt. I have solved my problem with the extra frameline by using a leica 5cm ltm to m converter. It makes a big difference being able to use the viewfinder as intended. Incidentally, using the m version of the voigtlander 21/4 and 35/2.5 also does not bring up the other frames. Something else: the peak design anchor mounts are perfect for attaching a wrist strap to Barnack without strap eyelets... Keep up the good works. Jean-Guy.
Bought one about two months ago. It’s the VM version that sits on the CLE most days. It’s a bit sharper than my 35mm Summicron (v3), but not by much (I’m film only). The contrast is higher, as is the flare resistance. It’s my new fav lens..
I’m so glad they put out this lens. I was gonna get black but you’re right, it looks a bit funny on a silver body. So Silver it is ☺️. I hope they keep putting out more ltm lenses. At least the 50 f2 🙏
Beautiful photos again Matt! Voigtlander knows what they're doing. I would go for the silver in this design for sure. A 50mm f2 would be absolutely perfect, Voigtlander :)
A Note to the manufacturer: "Mr Cosina - we love your passion for re-inventing and re-viitalising vintage lens designs under the Voigtlander banner. THANK YOU KIND SIR!"
The one thing I would really love to see from Voigtländer would be a new 50mm f2.5 in a pancake form factor, like the 35mm f2.5 and 21mm f4. There is an older ltm version, but it's rather hard to find.
Such a cool lens! They have made a 50/2 Heliar Classic that was collapsible, and very compact. It wasn’t ‘Summicron’ sharp but more than sharp enough for real world work and had a beautiful character. I had one, sold it and regret it! Lol. They’re not cheap and not easy to find… so yeah I’m with you…bring back the 50/2 Heliar Classic! 😎
This would be a cracking lens for street photography on one of my film M's making the camera pretty much pocketable. Something I really enjoyed with my Summicron 40mm which I wish I'd never sold.
Hi, yes fair point Mahesh. This offers LTM which was the biggest plus for me, it's lighter I think, smaller diameter and should be sharper (its modern high performance vs classic design). By 5.6 they my be similar..
Matt, any lens you use produces amazing photos, kudos! Anyhow, I know what you say about 50mm f2. I have an old Leica Summicron v. 4 Canadian made, and it’s amazing. I have a 1970s Jupiter 3 f1.5, which I truly think it’s effective only from 2.8, unless I’m going for a dreamy wash-out look. Both lenses gives me much joy, and I agree with a modern screw mount version’s versatility in old camera is needed.
This would be my next lens, after the 40/1.4 Nokton MC for sure. It's perfect for the Bessa R3a, or any CL/CLE, due to 40mm, hence corresponding 40mm frame lines. Any other Body other then above doesn't have 40mm frame lines, into the M mount universe. (Rollei 35 RF is a subtle different R3A Bessa Voigtländer)
I have a 50mm 2.8 macro vivitar with an Olympus md mount from the 1970’s when I had a OM-1 I put it on my Fuji xe1 and shoot b&w it’s a 75mm wow it’s just gorgeous by the way it focuses to full life size I just wanted to tell you about this great lense
Thank you for the in-depth review. Do you think this one and the Heliar 40mm f2.8 without the focus helicoid have big difference in image quality? I'm deciding which one to get for my L mount camera, with M to L close focus adapter. I'm leaning on the later one, since I need to have my adapter on for both lenses, the one without the focus helicoid seems more compact. Unless it's image quality is significant worse than the new one.
I really like this lens, the only bummer is the aperture ring ,moves with the focus ring so if you try to change the aperture after you focus, you will need to refocus. So the way I use it is to set exposure first, then focus.
Nice video, as ever, thanks! Voightlander has recently started making Nikon Z mount lenses and one is a 50mm f2...The bad news is that it is quite big and is chipped, so hardly the template you are after.
I've found this lens to be a great one, a really superb all-arounder, whether on the Barnack or adapted onto my Sonys. My 2 mild grumbles are that the lens cap that comes with it only fits with the hood (so if you remove the hood you're without a cap), and that while I know you want them to do a good 50mm f/2, I'm wanting them to put out a new 35mm (my own personal favorite focal length). I've not had too many composition issues using the built-in viewfinder on the Barnack, but if I want to be sure I'll use the Viooh, since you can set it midway between the 35 and 50mm clicks.
I am really happy Voigtländer makes this new LTM lens, I appreciate that kind of commitment! Yet, I am a bit confused about the 40mm range. I can only imagine they've had parts left of the probably not so successful collapsible Heliar 40/2.8 M bayonet, which can only be used with a Helicoid adapter (to Sony E). It is also such an odd range, it is actually hard to find a matching high-quality viewfinder at a decent price. They probably should have packed a 40mm vf to that lens, at least for the LTM version. Personally, I'd wish for a 28mm or 35mm, maybe pancake style. I would not mind if a 50mm would follow later, even a new Heliar 50/3.5 would be great, but I think I really lack a decent (moderate) wide angle for my Leica screw-mount cameras. I've already got some 50mm lenses, among those a really beautiful performer, a 5cm/3.5 Elmar red scale from 1956. Voigtländer generally do confuse me quite a bit. As I said, I really appreciate their efforts, but all those various lens finishes and changes in style drive me half crazy. And I don't quite see a concept in their line-up (maybe it's just too much for me, creating "want" over "need" -lol-), or some of their recent social media presence, for that matter. Vintage vs classic, multi coated vs single coated - and also the rate they are shelling out second, third or even fourth versions of existing formulas is quite a bit confusing. But hell, yeah, let them fire away - preferably with some Leica screw-mount lenses, which would be awesome, as I keep being tempted by the 40/2.8, having a constant fight with my "add to shopping cart" finger, despite the odd focal length and despite already owning the great little 40/2 Summicron-C. The one thing that keeps stopping me, really, is the fundamental question: black or silver? ,-)
Thanks David! I bought this lens after making the video. The size and fact it's LTM was too good not to have. I bought silver but kinda wish I had black too for the Black 1931 Leica I :) .. 40mm was the go to FL for many fixed lens RF cameras as it's close to the view we see with out eyes. In real terms, if you use a iiig or M3 use the full finder area to compose and it's spot on. For other cameras I agree it would be nice to have 28/35/50 to match the framelines.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'd probably end up with one black, one silver, too -lol- I've got a silver 28/5.6 TTArtisan and I'm still eyeing the black one, which will even show brassing after a while.. And I am really trying not to buy the 40/2.8 just now, and I hope Voigtländer will announce more options.. But, hey, those lens makers really know how to create the "want"! Cheers, Dagmar ,-)
Hi Matt, and anyone else who may know the answer - I do wonder if this LTM lens will work on ..... now don't laugh! ....... a Zorki 4 or similar? That is, focusing to infinity etc, and will the rangefinder patch 'couple' correctly?
No question is a bad one! I plan to do the same in fact. (I just bought the lens). THE ideal camera is the iiiG as can use full BC to see exact 40mm view. (Or Minolta CL/CLE)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for the reply Matt, I've always been curious if a genuine LTM lens will fully function on a Zorki. Some lovely old Zorkies out there, problem is - finding one that been taken care of etc.
One way in which I think Cosina went too far on the "vintage" angle was by reviving the silly revolving f/stop scale. The entire front of the lens rotates as you turn the focusing ring (as shown at 2:13) which forces you to hunt for the index dot whenever you want to change apertures. This was typical of RF lenses through the '50s, but by the '60s most manufacturers had switched to "parallel" focusing mounts that let the f/stops stay put.
This does seem an odd design element, but I wonder if it has to do with the original 40mm f2.8 heliar for Sony not having the focus helicoid and maybe there was some compromise in producing this lens from that one.
Hi Matt, since you're looking for a 50mm f2 (M-Mount), have you ever looked at the Konica M-Hexanon 50mm f2? I have one and I love it but your needs are likely very different than mine. The M-Hexanon (as you probably remember) were developed for the Hexar rangefinders and historically received very high praise. I'd like to know your opinion...thank you! RJ
Thanks Ronald, yes I know the lens, quite premium but yes I know what you mean about the nice size. (I eventually bought the new 40mm as I realised on the Leica iiig (or M3) I can use the full VF for 40mm video without needing an extra finder.
Very nice review as usual. You did not mention the 3d pop that usually characterizes heliar lenses. Apparently it was not particularly noticeable. Thanks
If you really care what is in your frame shoot a F3 with 100% frame coverage. I find the 500m frame lines on the M3 are good enough with my 40mm. I am not making prints in the darkroom but making high res scans where I got room to crop.
How does this compare to the older Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 lens? Assuming the lens will be using on a M mount body (I’m thinking a film Leica CL with 40mm frame line). Both lenses are in compact sizes for portability, although this one is even smaller.
Thanks Wei, yes good point. The Heliar will give more modern rendering and I think less vignetting and probably sharp to all but the extreme corners. I'll I get a chance to test it I will.
I'm probably not getting the question. How can one compare a 1,4 lens to a 2,8. They will be very different as for aperture. I've been shooting w. my Voigtländer 1,4 since a few years. I can't think of a 2,8 to yield the same or comparable results
oh well oh well. The Lens that I lookt at some many times now. xD I did sad to you some weeks ago that I really like to by my first leica and that a want to get a M2. Or maybe a Zeiss Ikon ZM?!? Well, some weeks later I have a super nice Camera on my desk and it is a Canon 7S(z). I got a Jupiter 8 from a good buddy for free and got a Jupiter 3 on eBay. And with my Pentax spotmeter V i really like to use this camera! After some work to the Viewfinder and regreasing the lenses it’s just a breeze to use the camera. BUT.... and here comes the Heliar in to Play... I would love to get a really good 35mm for my Canon. I still haven’t decided on what lens to get... The Canon 35mm f2 or f1.8. Or the Ultron 35mm 1.7 or something else completely (Jupiter 12) I don’t know. And in just that feeling, I was looking at the Heliar a lot. This Lens looks so good! What I would really like to see from Voigtlander in LTM is a 35mm f2 only single coted maybe like the first 50mm 1.2. That would be so good. Well, well... at least we can dream I guess. XD Have a good one and I am looking forward to your next vid!
Thanks Nils! Congrats! The Canon 1.8 is soft, see that video, Ultron will be sharp and Canon f2 said to be sharp too. J12 are hit and miss but can be nice and a Voigtlander Skopar 2.5 is a great performer (get the LTM).
It sounds like a very good Lens. I think that a 40mm focal length are great (though I like 35mm more !) and 40mm are more "normal" than a 50mm Lens ! I do not like 50mm Lenses, any Lens shorter or longer, 45mm and shorter, 55mm and longer ! My wish to Voigtländer are a 24mm 2.0 (or 2.8) APO and a 135mm 2.8 APO for Sony E-mount. 14/15mm 2.8 or 4.0 APO will also be nice.
Great vid, thanks. Thoughts on comparison to the 40mm Summicron from the CL? Size wise looks about the same, is the lens contrast comparable? Given the choice to get one or the other which would you choose? And if you had the Leica 40mm, would you upgrade? Cheers
Hi Juan, tough question! Cron should be smaller and maybe lighter if like my Minolta 40mm f2. I bought the Minolta as better contrast vs the Cron 40 (seems the common view online/forums etc). This would mean the Voigtlander will "win" for contrast and probably a more modern rendering, perhaps more saturated look but i'm guessing as haven't used the Cron.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for the insight. Probably best to try the CL 40mm and the Voigtlander on a digital camera to assess. For the price, would be good to have a more modern lens for film. Cheers!
What Kind of M-Adapter do you User Matt 50or 35mm? This Lens would be Perfect for the CL analog or any other M Camera for the case of travelling and Ultra compact
Big virtual patting on the back for mentioning Cosina and the 35mm Camera Matt. Thanks for that! What a sweet little lens this is. I loved the photos in front of the escalator that showed off the ability of the lens to pop.
Will this lens work on old Soviet LTM cameras since their thread pitch is different than German or Japanese LTM cameras? I have a few Russian LTM lenses I'd Iove to use on my M, but since the thread pitch is different, they don't align with the Rangefinder on my M and can't focus properly without using a Visoflex.
Hi Matt. Does the 28-90 adaptor in the video bring the 90mm frame in the Leica m3 using this 40mm lens? I have used the 35-135 and the 50-75 and both bring up the 135 frameline when i only want the 50mm frameline.
Hi Jean-Guy.. interesting.. I think because I know to just view the full VF area I take no notice of what framelines show. In theory 50-75 should work but i've not tried.
I would have bought one of these if the lens surround ring was silver instead of black. It doesn't look right on the silver version. It stands out too much and clashes with the overall look.
It seems to me that your thoughts are going in five different directions at the same time. So distracting . At the end I couldn’t think of one useful thing, I learned in this video. I like your channel, just trying to help.
Thanks Julius, it's a good lens for those liking a small walkabout lens, a more modern rendering vs vintage lenses and more of the frame in focus at wider apertures compared to the 50/60s lenses. Sorry I didn't make it clear and thanks for the feedback.

Hello Matt. I have solved my problem with the extra frameline by using a leica 5cm ltm to m converter. It makes a big difference being able to use the viewfinder as intended. Great video - yes please to a 50mm F2
Thanks Robert!
How does this compare to the older Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 lens? Assuming the lens will be using on a M mount body (I’m thinking a film Leica CL with 40mm frame line). Both lenses are in compact sizes for portability, although this one is even smaller.
Yeah i would have loved to have seen a comparison to the 40 f1.4 and Minolta Rokkor f2.
@@EdwardConde Mee too. And adding the Summicron 40 - there are conflicting info on how similar it is to the Rokkor.
Thanks Wei, yes good point. The Heliar will give more modern rendering and I think less vignetting and probably sharp to all but the extreme corners. I'll I get a chance to test it I will.
Thanks Edward, yes as all 3 are small. If I get a chance I will.
Thanks! It looks like together we have plenty for Voigtlander to be working on :)
Hi Gino, I use the M3 so I use any adapter. You can get either depending on your preference. Yes a nice small size!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Any adapter for 50mm or 35mm?
@@ginobartali9338 all fit the same, just depends if you want to see 35mm or 50mm frames. M3 only shows 50 with all adapters / any*
Big virtual patting on the back for mentioning Cosina and the 35mm Camera Matt. Thanks for that!
What a sweet little lens this is. I loved the photos in front of the escalator that showed off the ability of the lens to pop.
Thanks and no problem, I'm happy you agree about a new affordable camera!
Again a very nice video / Ulf
Thanks Ulf!
When I mix and match they normally work just not wide open as will miss focus (say J3 50/1.5 etc).
A 50mm f2 wouldn‘t be so small so a similar sized 50mm f2.8 would be more realistic and still great!
True, good point. I’m still loving the 40 until then.
In theory 50-75 should work but i've not tried.
nice lens
Thanks Armin, yes a nice size too!
1:48 IMHO: silver on silver > black on black > black on silver > silver on black
Thanks! Yes I liked S S & B B
All my Leicas are black. Therefore I would go for the black one.
Nice Sacha! Yes I would do the same.
which one ????.....minolta f2 or vm f1.4 or this , remember I'm already poor because of you lol
See both those videos. Minolta is lighter, I dont love either (use much)
I would have bought one of these if the lens surround ring was silver instead of black. It doesn't look right on the silver version. It stands out too much and clashes with the overall look.
Yes that was an oversight by the design team for sure
"Black on black, or silver on silver"
*cries in grey Bessa R3A*
Ah yes! I should know better? I have grey Bessa T! Silver lenses on olive green Bessa look awesome! (See my R2 vid)
