The Most Deadly Hidden Area in Mario 64

- Here is the most deadly area in Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64. And no it's not any of the bowser stages, rainbow ride, tik tok clock or the lava levels. It's actually an area right in Peaches Castle on top of the castle.
#shorts
this is because mario went out of bounds, which automatically kills mario
also note that mario loses his hat for some reason
Yep. When Mario is out of bounds, the game skips figuring out whether or not Mario is supposed to have his hat on, and therefore it just defaults to no hat.
@@ianmathwiz7 oh ok, makes more sense. i thought it was purposefully coded that mario would have its hat removed whenever he is out of bounds
@@TheBester7 As far as I can tell it's unintended. Early in the frame, the game checks what floor is currently underneath Mario, and if that check fails the game skips past a bunch of code. One part of that code just happens to be the code that puts Mario's hat on.
@@ianmathwiz7 oh ok, i didnt know about that, thanks!
Of course thanks to Pannenkoek we know that if you go far enough out of bounds you end up back in bounds in a Parallel Universe
I forgot all about that. after I got the 120 Stars and shut myself up there I went to the very edge and walk all around it. thinking that I would run into a glitch but instead I died LOL
Well you did run into a glitch technicality
How did you shut yourself up?
@@johnomalley7211 Well, when I go to sleep. But even then my mind doesn't want to shut up.
@@rydermauldin I want him to figure that out himself thanks tho buddy
It was a glitch tho….
"This area is the most deadly area in the game if you specifically decide to die"
No, the area is tiny, so ita only deadly if you enter it
@@Melvin-14 he said the castle courtyard plus any death plane could be named this way and this one definitely doesn't claim the most players.

Snowman's land has the same type of death that _could_ happen by accident.
Small chunk of invisible wall made out of out of bounds, the slopes that force you backward temporarily remove the out of bounds until they disappear, forcing out of bounds into you, killing you instantly.

I remember stumbling upon this a long time ago while playing Super Mario 64 as a kid. Thought I was the only one that had found it, too, lol.
I remember I found the upstairs stair case clip when I was really young. I have no memory of ever taking the stairs up to the top normally.
Yoshi is just chillin casually in the background
everybody gangsta until mario talks with him
Me 10 months ago: Weird. I wonder why that happens.
Me now: The knowledge of the inner workings of this universe have been revealed to me, I know all.
You can also get out of bounds in Snowman's land. If you go to the edge of the corridor where those triangles push you off, there's a tiny gap in the floor that Mario can push or bonk against like an invisible wall. If Mario jumps onto that spot while a triangle is covering it up, he'll be out of bounds and die after the triangle disappears.
Huh cool.
You get Beboped there
That killed me several times. I just save that level for last.
There's also another well-known way to clip out-of-bounds which you might have seen done in a TAS, which is a faster strat for doing the bomb-clip. Instead of clipping through the cage, you grab the bob-omb hands free and clip through the side of the hill instead, which momentarily places you out-of-bounds, starts the death sequence, but before you die and get ejected from the level you quickly grab the star. The reason it's fast is because the star will count as collected, but you eject from the level as a death, an save multiple seconds by not having to deal with the long celebration animation and the save prompt. This is also known as the death star glitch, though sadly it's often too elaborate or too hard to setup so it often ends up being slower, for humans especially so.

me thinking it was the piano💀
I don't blame you fr 💀
fuck that piano 😮💨
I'm not understanding how its more deadly than anywhere else. Don't go there, the same way you just don't jump off the map.
Lethal Lava Land:
1.Get a koopa shell
2.roll the log
3.get in its way while its going back
4.ded
It's kind of funny to trigger Mario's lava-damage scream several times in rapid succession.
How it feels when ur mom puts you in timeout at five years old 😂
do you know why it kills you? you went into the out of bounds area which kills you, and also taking your hat off.
Hours and hours spent playing this game.
I never knew YOSHI was in this game!!
Lmao me neither till I actually went up there and he was there
"YOU PULLED YOURSELF UP BRO! BWAHAHAHA THE PRINCESS AND YOUR STUPID HAT ARE MINE NOW!" - Bowser probably -
Explanation:
out of bounds if normally impossible to reach because the game cancels his movement when he is trying to. however, ledge grabbing doesn't check if Mario will be in out of bounds when he gets up, so he gets up and finds himself in out of bounds and the game kills him
mario loses its hat because on every frame, the game first resets mario's hat state, making him hatless, normally all the other event plays out but in this case it gets interrupted by entering out of bounds, so after that frame mario's hat state never got updated again (with his hat on) which is why he is hatless
By this logic every death pit in the game is just as deadly 💀
The reason you die there is because you actually stepped into out of bounds. If Mario is in out of bounds he dies. Normally you can’t enter out of bounds because when you try to enter it will just cancel the movement and won’t let you move there. If you run up against the invisible wall next to that spot you are actually running up against out of bounds. The only way you can enter out of bounds is if it appears inside you (can happen in snowman’s land near the ice blocks and the frozen water) or if you use glitches like this ledge grab. The rest Mario looses his hat is because every frame in the code the game first removes marks hat, then it lets Mario do a frame of animation. Then it adds Mario’s hat to what it should be. But there is a line of code in between the part where Mario loses his hat and is allowed to advance animation by a frame. That code specifically checks if Mario is currently in a out of bounds hitbox, and if he is it ends the execution process there, which means Mario’s hat never gets updated to its proper state because that usually happens after the out of bounds check.
The one thing that really bugs me all the time is how do people even find glitches like these
By accident. This could be a speedrunner, an adventurous player, they'll search every nook and cranny for anything of interest.
@@WhoJustFatposted also at this point Mario 64 has been picked apart in such high detail that we pretty much have the whole source code of the game. With that it’s much easier to figure out any inconsistencies or strange bugs in the code and then it’s just som testing to see if they are useful or not.
Peaches courtyard always creeped me out. It's so empty and eerily silent. It's just like something bad is waiting to happen.
Shit, that was the safest place in the game
Oh my goodness, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought this fr 😭🤣

"This is the most deadly area in the game if you go hang off a random corner that is nowhere near any place that you need to go for a normal playthrough."
“It’s about the death wall in Jolly Roger Bay isn’t it”
_”It’s actually right outside the castle!”_
“It’s about the death area on the castle top isn’t it”
Such a good explanation to the video
Sm64 modder here, the reason this happens is because the game has a fail safe to kill mario if it doesn’t detect a floor under him. (Death barriers count as floors) so if you force mario to go out of bounds or somewhere where no floor exists, the game kills mario to prevent him from being stuck forever.
But there is a floor. He was just standing on it before he started hanging from the ledge
@@goldenlotus3046how ledge grabbing works is that it moves mario up and forward by a set distance, and how the game checks for floor collision is directly at his center point. So when he pulls up onto the ledge, it moves his center point to a spot with no floor, triggering the out of bounds death.
@@hyenasenpai8227 Interesting. I rewatched it, it barley goes out of bounds to the side huh? Once he steps up. I noticed when he drops down it gets pushed to the side a bit when he grabs the ledge. And when he gets up the center of his body is slightly out of bounds on the other side.
The reason why this is deadly is because Mario is out of bounds and he lost his hat for some reason
I discovered that in 2000 thanks to a Mario fansite called Beyond 120 Stars by Walton Dell, a bunch of glitches and tricks to do after you've beaten the game. Or in some cases, before, like getting to Peach's Castle roof before draining the water,
Mario snapped his spine trying to life himself up.

pretty much Mario in sm64 can't exist anywhere there isn't a floor below him, so the game kills Mario as a failsafe.
Hat’s off, he’s dead💀
Mario where the hell is your hat
Mario only can survive clipping if he's mini glitch fireball mario.
I've known of this since probably late 00's and have always found it quite bizarre. Mario even loses his hat. I like showing it off to people whenever I get the chance. It's pretty crazy how many odd glitches are in this game. It's enough to make you think the game might have been a bit rushed, but I don't think that's the case at all. I think the reason for the high amount of glitches is simply that 3D game development was a brand new thing for Nintendo (and pretty much everyone else) at the time. They were still figuring everything out.
Wow Brad If That Wasn't A Secret It Should Have A Death Skull☠️ On It Gezzzz
When he falls to the ledge, a part of the ledge has a warped hit box that Mario grabs onto, so it pushes him to the edge of the hold.
So when he pulls himself up, he pulls himself up into a small section that he would be unable to move in, cause he has his own hotbox inside the three segment wall point. You can think of it like an ensnarement or "bear trap" spot.
The game has a safety feature to auto-kill in these situations.
There are 2 more spots like that. I know one is in the dessert, where a sandpit has a hole, so he can fall in and grab the edge, and that edge itself is the kill point for same reason, as the sandpit, the "wall" and the ground are the ensnarement.
And another is supposed to be in the fire/lava area. But that one can only be reached via cheats like float and moonjump, but I forget where it is, other then inside the cage where a star is.
no, wall hitboxes just push mario, and there isn't any failsafe for being "stuck". what happens is that there's no floor underneath mario, and so he is considered out of bounds, and instantly dies.
@@flowrling actually, I'm pretty sure there is a failsafe meant to kill Mario in certain situations. It's just generally never a failsafe you'd encounter playing normally.
If you have ever played or watched anything regarding Mario 64 Chaos, then you'll know that most versions have a code that "magnetizes" Mario - basically, all objects in the level, regardless of whether they are loaded, will move towards Mario, ignoring collision with other objects or level terrain.
In the situation I have described, sometimes Mario will get squished between the objects, or the level terrain and the objects. However, Mario does not lose health, like he would if he was squished by a Whomp/Thwomp.
Why does this matter?
Because what I have noticed is that, should Mario remain in this squished state for long enough, his character model unloads, his health is set to 255 (decimal form for the integer, displays an empty health bar), and he dies.
@heheheiamderpmatter375 I don't fully understand what you're saying. could you please describe the Mario 64 Chaos thing? is it a mod/romhack/etc of some sort? if it is, it's possible that the failsafe was added into that because afaik there isn't one in the original game, but obviously I can't look into and fully understand the code so I'd never know what goes on, I just know that Mario instantly dies if there's no floor beneath him.
@@flowrling Yes, Chaos is a romhack.
Basically, at random points in gameplay, an effect is chosen and applied to the game. This can range from simple visual effects, such as replacing the ground texture with toad's face, or extremely deadly, such as replacing some different floor triangles with quicksand.

One could say it's a sharp corner
This goomba is the most _deadly_ enemy in the game…if you walk straight into it without jumping.
I thought I was gonna get Rick rolled
Does anyone know about the secret area that looks like wet/dry world but has a bunch of gardens of those yellow flowers ??? Perhaps accessible via outside the castle?? One time I randomly ended up there as a child
Dude! I found areas like these all over the game. If you go to any level that looks like it has somewhere you can fall with no bottom, it kills you! Isn't that wild! The most deadly places are all over!
you don't even die, you're only reset because you come outside of the map 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
This is TIED for deadliest area. Ever been to the giant snowman level? Has a part that sometimes blocks you and sometimes kills you
Oh, when mario's hat disappears lile that it means part of him touched out of bounds. He probably intersected the corner where there would be no level.
Every frame:
>Add Mario's hat
>Check if Mario is out of bounds
>If true, kill Mario and his hat
You mean that castle was fake? My childhood mind is blown away seeing the backend of the Castle missing. :(
This is called death by barrier its in every level and each level has its own ways to die from, the most common way is nocliping from a enemy.
It's the piano that's very deadly
There are many deadly areas like this in Mario 64, such as in Snowman's Land where someone encountered it on accident during a Speedrun
Big oof
Nope. That's not the deadliest place in the game, you're wrong, nope, not correct
Bro thats like saying ThE mOsT dAnGeRuS pLaCe In Sm64 Is A pIt
False advertising the most lethal area is where everyone dropped the penguin off the edge. Lethal to the penguin that is
You can get on top of the castle?! I was too busy failing at getting stars to ever know
Y'all should play retro 64 it has all the games like Mario 64! (No cap)
Princess Peach saw this hidden area and said, "Sorry Mario, but our insurance doesn't cover Thwomp-related incidents"
It's not a secret, but a bug in the geometry of the castle. Mario tries to go out of bounds so he dies.
How did I never know you could land on the castle 😢😢😢
When you stub your toe
Is it on SM64DS?
maybe the corner was so sharp that it impaild mario
My favorite game is actually Mario 64
It's not that deadly if it's that easy to avoid.

why did mario lose his cap when he died
he loses his cap as well

Interesting….. Never knew that glitch. I’ll do you 1 worse, though, a glitch you’ll never escape. On top of the castle if you go to that cone part basically where Peach’s image is and drop down, you ain’t getting inside the castle or back out for that matter. I’m instead you’re stuck in between. 😂
We need to get back to the basics and stop changing the definitions of words... how is this the "deadliest" when there's pre-requisites... you must have 120 stars, and you must specifically go there to die.
I just have a question
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER IT???????!!!!!?!?!!!!
It's been discovered for years.

Speedrunning shortz: At the very edge on the roof of Peach's Castle, if you cling on the corner then climb up it game will kill you instantly
I can survive it
I bet it’s facke
Well, its not hidden really,
You die there because in the game when you go out of bounds you instantly die, and by grabbing on that ledge you can make mario's position be out of bounds, causing you to die.
Soon i will survive
Also when playing on the original N64 if you were to jump behind the castle from that point it would glitch you into the courtyard of where the boos are I always found that as a need a little glitch

Hey this place is the most deadly because if you go to this specific spot you die.... Ignore all the places you can die by accident on the various levels.
