I tend to leave all the negative comments about Anna Netrebko to the purists & refrain from reading them, preferring instead to simply enjoy listening to a voice which gives me the chills! It's all subjective & a question of personal taste anyway.
Sorry, all this fuss about singing technique, sustaining of the voice and even looks...She may not be the best - technically speaking, she may look fantastic, but to draw a bottom line: The impact she has on her listeners' hearts and ears, the artistic depth, the sheer joy of performing is outstanding!
I will agree that this is not Netrebko's best rendition of this piece -- everybody is entitled to an off day. Her performance in the 2005 Salzburg La Traviata is the one that really blows me away; she is still a great Violetta. As for you naysayers and your scathing remarks about the Fair Maiden of Krasnodar, would you care to come forward and show your exclusive Deutsche Grammophon contracts and bookings for the next five years? I cannot comment on the more technical aspects of Anna Netrebkos voice, but I rate her extremely high because of her ability to bring the personas she portray on the scene out to us all, make them come to unforgettable life. Few in todays world of opera does exactly that better than AN. Singing isn't only about hitting the right notes absolutely spot on but is also a matter of performance.
It's really difficult to accept all the negative, at times contemptuous comments people have for Anna Netrebko, when the reaction from the audience in this video & that of those around the world, is clearly in total contrast. Of course there will always be the purists who show bias towards their own personal favourite/s & pick the bones out of all others. It's mostly cruel, unnecessary & often without foundation. I do feel the criticism of her is often rather sinister, unwarranted & nothing to do with her actual ability, but haters will hate! I listen to them all & am constantly in awe of anyone who spends their life honing a skill to her extraordinary level. For me, she is simply spectacular & an absolute delight on the ear!

To have a great voice like AN is obviously only a start to a great performance in singing. She expresses the emotions in the song. That is enhanced by great acting. Hard to find another one with similar capabilities. I feel lucky to be able to listen to such a magnificent performance from the convenience of my home. I am going to be nice, but why oh why do you never discuss the technical points of how she is singing the aria, interpreting the composers music, the role, etc.. It is in the mastery of these fine details that you have a complete and great artist. this woman does have a sound.. I will say that.. Very natural lovely dark sound.. She is not a coloratura, but she has a voice and she means what she sings.
I agree with you. Anna has one of the most beautifull voices to come along in a long time. I don't understand the comparisons between her and Diana Damrau as they have VERY different voices. The thing is that Anna keeps singing a repertoire to light for her voice. She's becoming more and more of a full lyric soprano and just doesn't have that light and blade-like sound of coloratura sopranos.
The best Violetta I've come across, Nebtrbko's soprano encompasses all of that fach's subtypes): spinto, coloratura, lyric - an incredible performance of an aria that is really three arias with each section calling upon different vocal skills and powers. The thunderous applause is well-deserved.
What a beautiful instrument she has! Bravo! Her voice and vocal performance has moved me to tears. Just listen, enjoy her gift and hope such continual praise will not affect her.

Now guys, come on! Can you seriously say this was bad singing? She had a few attacks bad and the last run up was a little shaky, but this WASN'T bad singing at all. Oddly, i don't see anyone complimenting her about the much clearer trillos at the beginning of the cabaletta... No one makes you like her, but if this is bad singing...
This is absolutely stunning and flawless. For you critics, you are what's wrong with Opera culture. More people attend opera to criticize the singers than to enjoy the experience. The end result has been on ongoing habit for directors and singers alike to spend less time dramatizing and embodying the character and more time standing still on stage focusing on nothing but technique. This culture of criticism has led to opera's ongoing slow death.

Probably not a good idea to laugh at prime Maria Callas. You are right that Anna Netrebko is simply amazing, imho, it is just that they are not the same just as Mozart and Beethoven were not the same., if they were it would be mass production.
Anna Nebtreko is one of the best sopranos of our time on my opinion. Endowed also with stunning beauty, acting ability, the gift of becoming her operatic characters, her coloratura, lyrical soprano voice is velvet, fluid and agile and shimmering silver tones. I love the very feminine Anna with the dramatic virile Rolando Villazon with whom she has such great chemistry.

Her acting and ability to get into character is top rate. Within her physical limits, she has good vocal technique. Sure, her vocal agility cannot be compared to, say, Callas. Its not that I haven't heard better singers, its simply that no one else makes me dream, quite like Netrebko. And maybe thats almost as important as the voice and technical abilities.

I appreciate different singers past and present for different qualities: I adore Callas; but I love going to opera today; Netrebko has a beautiful tone, great in right roles; Gheorghiu, Fleming, Dessay, Damrau, Radvanovsky, Gutierrez (wow!), as well as many other singers - they are all excellent and yes each has flaws - so what? nobody is perfect. It's fine to prefer one singer to another or dislike a singer. But this mud-slinging is ridiculous.
That was really marvelous. Ms. Netrebko has the most beautiful natural vocal timbre. Also, a special shout out to the conductor. It may be easy to forget that he (or she) must not only keep the orchestra together but must also follow the soloist, a highly specialized skill. Samir Pirgu is to be commended!
Yeas i have! But have you listened to Callas? While her agility was very good, her core sound was not nearly as polished as Netrebko's! The singers you mentioned are very good and I love every single one. however, if you notice it's always the singers with more flawed voices but with electrifying stage preseneces that the audiences relate to the most! Callas was one, Netrebko is another.

Don´t care for techniques.I like what I hear and this kind of powerful soprano is the best.You´ve been too conservative, strict and traditional.She´s vocally fab & strong; very theatrical, young and pretty.
I was an ardent Netrebko fan, but as she has got older, her coloratura has declined significantly. This was not a god example of her singing. Even Tebaldi, the most un-colorautra able of singers does a better job!!! Like Fleming, Netrebko is not singing for her voice, but for her bosses and perhaps ego. She is best in her lyric rep and should utilise that potential. Sutherland, had it right, singing roles for her voice as her capabilities changed.

She sings it very well and show her rich tessitura. People can pick on anything, but they can't sing it like her. She is a good model for young singers and her renditions are the best. She is highly respected in her own country too and won a President's award for contributing to Russia's international cultural standing. No way to call her performances poor.

I think, she's not coloratura-soprano, her voice is far darker and not so "light", but Anna has very beautiful voice with very good high voice ( in end of the aria is a high ESZ /high C plus/ ), and she's very very good artist. Mein opinion is, she's not absolutely coloratura-soprano, I think, she's dramatic s. But she has coloratur soprano's high.
I agree with you, 100 percent. It should not be denied that she is a both accomplished and good singer. Whether one prefers a darker tone (like Anna's) or a lighter one, a slower vibrato (like Anna's) or a quicker one, is all a part of art's subjectivity.

I appreciate different singers past and present for different qualities: I adore Callas; but I love going to opera today; Netrebko has a beautiful tone, great in right roles; Gheorghiu, Fleming, Dessay, Damrau, Radvanovsky, Gutierrez (wow!), as well as many other singers - they are all excellent and yes each has flaws - so what? nobody is perfect. It's fine to prefer one singer to another or dislike a singer. But this mud-slinging is ridiculous.
That was really marvelous. Ms. Netrebko has the most beautiful natural vocal timbre. Also, a special shout out to the conductor. It may be easy to forget that he (or she) must not only keep the orchestra together but must also follow the soloist, a highly specialized skill. Samir Pirgu is to be commended!
Yeas i have! But have you listened to Callas? While her agility was very good, her core sound was not nearly as polished as Netrebko's! The singers you mentioned are very good and I love every single one. however, if you notice it's always the singers with more flawed voices but with electrifying stage preseneces that the audiences relate to the most! Callas was one, Netrebko is another.

OK people, back to what this clip is really about: the ASTOUNDING performance by Anna N of this amazing scene which, years ago, instantly converted me to opera. At the time marvelously performed by Eliana Cotrubas but I agree, comparing is pointless, this is fabulous singing and ANNA RULES!
Remarkable... She is great, in voice and performance, taking into account that the aria is very demanding. Also, terrific couple with Rolando! (The Traviata performed in the 2006 Salzburg Festival is a jewel)

...Wonderful on stage! Who cares for accent? Too much technique leads to no feelings.This is one of the hardest arias in the world to sing. Who can do any better? You don´t enjoy anything, just want to criticize and find mistakes, don´t accept what is knew and people with their own personality.

i love anna but she is all over the place in this aria..she's was flat throughout estano and sharp in sempre libera. Something's not right
Don´t care for techniques.I like what I hear and this kind of powerful soprano is the best.You´ve been too conservative, strict and traditional.She´s vocally fab & strong; very theatrical, young and pretty.

I was an ardent Netrebko fan, but as she has got older, her coloratura has declined significantly. This was not a god example of her singing. Even Tebaldi, the most un-colorautra able of singers does a better job!!! Like Fleming, Netrebko is not singing for her voice, but for her bosses and perhaps ego. She is best in her lyric rep and should utilise that potential. Sutherland, had it right, singing roles for her voice as her capabilities changed.

She sings it very well and show her rich tessitura. People can pick on anything, but they can't sing it like her. She is a good model for young singers and her renditions are the best. She is highly respected in her own country too and won a President's award for contributing to Russia's international cultural standing. No way to call her performances poor.

I think, she's not coloratura-soprano, her voice is far darker and not so "light", but Anna has very beautiful voice with very good high voice ( in end of the aria is a high ESZ /high C plus/ ), and she's very very good artist. Mein opinion is, she's not absolutely coloratura-soprano, I think, she's dramatic s. But she has coloratur soprano's high.

I agree with you, 100 percent. It should not be denied that she is a both accomplished and good singer. Whether one prefers a darker tone (like Anna's) or a lighter one, a slower vibrato (like Anna's) or a quicker one, is all a part of art's subjectivity.
