      The subscript numbers come from the molecule itself. H2O for example, There are 2 Hydrogen atoms and 1 Oxygen atom. Chemists don't write the subscripts for atoms with one, like Oxygen.

    Sir one small doubt , number of atoms in a element at product side of a chemical formula are called subscripts or not . There else the reactant side number of atoms in a element are only called as subscripts. Or both product and reactant side's number of atoms in a element are called subscripts.

    • @davidan95
      @davidan95 4 года назад +1

      I think your class may be wrong or some information was left out. it should be 2h2+o2 equals 2h2o. h2+o2=h2o without any coefficients is impossible. An oxygen atom can't just vanish into thin air. Most likely it was used as an example to demonstrate balancing a chemical equation.

    Formula of water is H2O it it says water molecule is formed by 2 Hydrogen Atoms and 1 Oxygen Atom.
    But I have seen articles explaining concepts of Oxidation using
    H2 + O2 = H2O .
    then they further extend it by saying law of conservation of mass requires us to balance the amount of matter .
    My question is when we know that a single water molecule is produced From 2 Hydrogen Atoms and 1 Oxygen atom , why there is need to add 2 Oxygen Atoms ?
    Like this ...
    H2 +O2 = 4H2O..

    • @wbreslyn
      @wbreslyn  Год назад

      So when you change the subscript, like the 2 in O2, you end up with a completely different substance. It has different chemical and physical properties. O2 is necessary for cellular respiration - you die without it. O3 is ozone, a ground level pollutant. The CDC states:
      "Ozone (O₃) is a colorless to blue gas with a pungent odor. Exposure to ozone may cause headaches, coughing, dry throat, shortness of breath, a heavy feeling in chest, and fluid in the lungs. Higher levels of exposure can lead to more severe symptoms. Chronic exposure may lead to asthma."
      But changing the number in front just means you have more. 2O2 means two O2 molecules.
