Introduction to Oxidation Reduction (Redox) Reactions

  • This is an introduction to oxidation reduction reactions, which are often called redox reactions for short. An oxidation reduction (redox) reaction happens when electrons are transferred between atoms. A loss of electrons is called oxidation, and we say that atom has become oxidized. A gain of electrons is called reduction, and we say that the atoms has become reduced. The two separate parts (oxidation and reduction) of an oxidation reduction (redox) reaction are called half reactions. Two half reactions can be put together to make the whole reaction. Oxidation numbers are numbers that can be written above atoms to show whether they are gaining or losing electrons.

Donating to you, Tyler (: I think I speak for most of us when I say thank you for finding time to make these videos! It means the WORLD to me and a bunch of other students. Professors and teachers these days just don't care enough to properly teach these things but keeping students interested, they hand you a book and expect you to get it. Your use of diagrams and the calm pace at which you explain things makes us feel like we really /can/ learn this stuff. The world needs more teachers like you.

It's CHEM I so it's an introductory course, and it goes a little more in depth than high school chem (depending on whether you took ap chem or not). It's mainly review because I remembered a lot of stuff from high school. This was the only topic I struggled with. My professor explained things poorly during lecture and I found that the textbook was a little confusing, so this video was helpful to me.

Because thats the essence of the school system in America. You learn it and then you don't remember it and then you learn it again. Thats like saying why you dont remember your middle school science lessons, when you're in high school. The whole essence of it is PASSING. That's the reason we all dont remember is because we're brought to this life to PASS not to LEARN. There's something called pre-reqs in University and is a requirement for all when declaring a major. Doesn't matter if you remember or not you have to take that class along with a bunch of others. Heck, I don't remember re-dox reactions when Im in my Anatomy and Physiology lab doing tests on any problems with innveration on the musculocutaneous nerve with flexion of the elbow joint.

When I was a kid and he would explain polymer chains to me by highlighting the electron charge of that atom. My Pop would tip his hat to you on the excellence of your video! Your teacher literally put this video in Class? That's awesome haha, but also a little funny at the same time, it's like your teacher realizes how good Tyler teaches, so he/she puts them in class because he/she is feeling a little lazy, or just wants to help you guys understand even more, either way it's still awesome that your professor does this!
