The power of water is unmatched
Yeah, I wish people would think about that before they decide to drive on flooded roads to their impending doom! This is why the phrase "Turn around! Don't drown!" is repeated so much by meteorologists.
It's unreal what water can do. Amazing. One of the main sources of life but also very very deadly
Thank you for this. I've crossed that river many many times. People need to know what a storm surge really looks like.
Is that the hatch bridge ?
Crazy indeed! That took a lot of guts to be out there in that! Wow!
Back in the 1970’s in south FL. We had a 30’ sail boat. When ever a storm was heading are way, we would tie off to the dock, plus to something that was on the land close by, a tree, a cleat anchor to the concrete seawall, an like someone already said, drop a anchor or two. As you can see in the video, you can’t have too many tie offs.
Are you blind?
Totally agree they had ample warnings ....OMG (you cant fix stupid)
@@Whistler326
Are you under the impression that only rich people own boats?
@@Amethyst12thheaven Tying off a boat in a hurricane will almost always result in it getting totaled. If you owned a boat that you cared about enough you would move it either on land or to another dock that is out of the hurricane cone.
Back in the day, we would sail right through the eye. Button the baby down and tie yourself to the mast. Done it many times.
Prayers for the people, their pets, their property 🙏
Amen ❤
Amen!💔
Thank you God for these wonderful hurricanes, Amen
No wonder insurance companies are pulling away from this place
I pay 4x more for insurance for my old, inexpensive 43' boat as I did for my much more expensive house. The insurance company sets the price and I pay. They made an educated bet based on probability and sometimes they lose... such is their business. The insurance company has so many stipulations that they seldom actually lose. If my boat is damaged in a named storm of any kind my policy coverage is nearly nothing unless it is on land, has proof of being properly prepared and is tied to the ground with hurricane tie-downs. And they want to know the location it will be secured at when they write the policy. I use my boat and travel around so that is always a guess. Don't feel sorry for the insurance companies, feel sorry for the people who lost their dream or the people who had such a boat wash up in their yard and then have to wait for the insurance company to do their job and have it removed. The FL insurance issue is all politics.
@@keithwolfe3976 wow,, thanks for that info
Natural disasters have always been a part of Florida. The problem with Florida insurance is the roof scammers. They file fraudulent lawsuits against insurance companies and the resulting losses and legal fees is what is actually causing increases. Florida actually passed two reform bills but it will take years for it to actually make a difference in premiums
Can you blame them? God has already left that's for sure.
Boats still attached to their docks floating downstream. Unbelievable!
They were floating UPstream on the incoming storm surge. How do you think they would navigate past this bridge if they were moored upstream of it?

Why do people live in Florida when this kind of thing happens every year!
It is awesome here! We umm do not all live on the coast. Please tell me a safe state to live in. I have lived in three, and all had their own natural disasters. Those were all surrounded by other states, that also had natural disasters. I have lived through cat five tornadoes, floods and hurricanes and all in different states. Hit by a hurricane in Atlanta Georgia, was hit by a hurricane Dennis as it became a tropical storm driving from Arizona to Ohio. So where is a safe state?
This breaks my heart. It's so sad.
Dude, that storm surge looks like a tsunami. WOW!
I have a question? If boat owners know a hurricane is coming for at least a week, why in the world do they not trailer their boat out of the water?
Most of them probably live elsewhere and only use it while on vacation or in winter they go south
@michaelspunich7273 Rich people problems (prob well insured and driving up prices for the rest of us)
Well on land could do damage and float in a bad spot or cause injury. Too expensive and no caves to place in rental
The vast majority did. I saw a big deal of boats being pulled before the storm. But not everyone could

I moved to Orlando, Florida in the last part of May 2013. 'Andrea' the Hurricane had hit, now downgraded to a Tropical Storm. 😮 It was Very Scary for me, another Nanny, and a little boy (he was only 1 year old).
It was at a beach house, on Long Boat Key, that soon turned into a flooded beach house! Because of the wind, rain, and blowing of the water, we had to 'automatically' push a button, and metal covering went over All the windows. Flooding Everywhere!! Towels Everywhere! 😱 Scary! I Love Florida, but not Hurricanes.
Then you were in a very lovely house on Longboat Key! It’s beautiful there!
I love Florida but for these reasons I wouldn't want to live here. Way to many hurricanes living near water.
Wow, thank you for recording it so we can see what is happening there. So sad and eye opening. I hope everyone is safe❤
This shows the advantage of having a live-aboard yacht in Florida. You sail out, before the weather arrives!
Where? That storm can go anywhere.
The storm was moving at 16 mph and it would be a fast sailboat to do better than 10 mph. And only a mega-yacht or destroyer would stand a chance out in the open in those storm tossed seas.
There's nowhere to escape by boat when the hurricane is in the gulf. Sailboats are slow, and this came up in less than a week. Even on the atlantic side, those boats are too small to sail into the ocean.
😱🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Prayers for and love to Florida residents from Georgia, USA.

The water has to be SO higher than normal for the ropes to just come off and the boats float away. BE CAREFUL GUYS.
Duh.
Ive been in a storm surge like this on a yacht. Up all night slacking the ropes off to keep it tethered but not have them snap as there WAS a bridge 300 yards away like this

Boats are always better underway out at sea than to be moored up at a pier during a major storm like this. Any Navy or Coast Guard base, you’ll see all vessels get underway prior to the storm arrival.
Advance preparation should be implemented by all owners.

Wow, you secure your boat to the dock but then the dock is not secure and you both go down. This is crazy.
Why would a boater take a chance on having their boat destroyed by a hurricane when they could have it hauled out, before hurricane season starts in June. They could then take it to safe storage in Georgia then bring it back to Florida in November when the hurricane season is over.
Wonder how high the water got..That boat scene was insane...

All the boats broke loose from their moorings is crazy. I feel for the owners. That’s an expensive loss. Y’all be careful out there….
The mostly scenario is one came loose and it hit several other boats and docks, the same way an avalanche can be started with a single rock.
@@keithwolfe3976 Gotcha. I hate that for the owners. This hurricane reminds me of Katrina. Didn’t think it would be this bad. I live in Alabama, and have gone through several. The last one tht hit Alabama was a Cat 1, but stalled in Mobile Bay and became a Cat 2. Storm surge was unbelievable w/ boats everywhere. Flooding occurred on bluffs w/ houses on stilts. It seemed to stick around and dump rain, also. Slow moving. This one seems to be moving faster?

These aren't boats you just pull out on a trailer with your pickup truck. Disregarding the $1000 it cost to pull and secure a boat with hurricane tiedowns, there are more boats than there are places to secure them ashore and not enough time to pull all of them. With good anchor gear a boat is usually safer on the water as long as it can be protected from the waves. There isn't much anyone can do when a dock the boat is tied to breaks free, or if it hits you. Additionally, This storm surge is so high that most boat yards in the area will be flooded so deep that the boats will break free anyway. During Ian the winds were so strong that even boats with proven hurricane tie-downs were knocked over like dominos by the wind. As I write this I am on my boat which is the same as one shown going under the bridge in this video, a Schucker 436, and I do the best and place myself in the safest scenario as I can. If Idalia had been a CAT 2 at landfall these boats would have been fine but coming ashore as a CAT 4 storm leaves you with little chance. Remember, these boats can only move about 5 - 10 MPH so running away isn't an option either. This was a protected area but the storm surge was too much.
Most of those were probably kept there because they don’t have a place to,put them. Especially the big ones.
