    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 лет назад

      Thats great to hear.. men can be a dumb and just "do" till they then get it right and dont use any analysis of what they are doing very often .. just try to get there .. but that a good and a bad thing . They often dont over think techniques . Women on the other hand are aware of what they are doing and can get stuck on a fault in a technique .. you wont however ..but if you are still landing one foot in front of the other dont worry about it .. it will come and especially with dry land practise changing the muscle memory . Go for it and the more good drive you have in the arms and positive flick the more the legs will land at the same time.

    I did a two step motion that I could get away with most of the time except when the waves were really steep. Was always jealous of surfers that can stand up and get in the barrel in one motion like a no-paddle drop in.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 лет назад

      Thanks for that comment. If we check the pro tour or most top surfing there's not too many times when you will see absolutely no paddling taking place but good timing and a quick one movement pop up is often accompanied by just a few well timed strong stokes. Not in huge waves however and in most cases we need to paddle for sure. Timing is always the key.

  • @joelsavell
    @joelsavell 3 года назад +1

    I like the observation that a lot of surfers don't even realize they're doing the flick jump in the water. On land they'll show newbies the hand-toe jump (basically a burpee) and believe that's what they're doing in the water too. Not so.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 года назад

      Thanks Joel. About early 90's I started to use motor drive shots to see what was really happening to most surfers in pop up and now with Go Pro and good camera its easy to see that the common physical movement for most good surfers ...but not all..there are even a few top WQS and WCT surfers with dodgy jump ups but a bit too late in some cases to correct them ! The quikest pop up technigue is to bury the tail in the water just before the wave
    breaks and stand up-no paddle take off -used on close -out waves

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 лет назад

      Thanks for that and its a good old technique your describing and it works but a pop up is different from a "pop" take off that you describe. Once the tail is pushed in and the volume takes you back out and into some short quick paddle strokes you then have to jump up or " pop up " as we say

    • @surfbum482
      @surfbum482 7 лет назад +2

      bobice555 give it a shot it's a common technique here and I use it a lot with no error

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 лет назад +1

      with higher volume boards the pop can work well if you timing is dead right but we need to always vary the type of approach to paddle and take off that applies to the type of wave and power we are dealing with .

    • @anthony452
      @anthony452 7 лет назад +1

      If you are talking about what I think you are it isn't really a popup tech.
      I bury the tail all the time to get quick takeoff on closeout waves. The popup still comes next.
      This is more of a "No paddle take off" description. Feels like you're launching yourself out of a cannon.

      There are various types of balance cushions you can use if you type into google "balance cushions for surfing" amazon sell them.
      brands like, Gonex and zen one sports.
      it helps work on core stability and focus.
      really useful training equipment to be ready for the waves.
      Thanks for watching.

    Good tutorial, but it's missing the most important step in every takeoff: glancing over your shoulder before popping up to make sure you aren't dropping in on someone!

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 лет назад +4

      Thanks for that and glad you liked the vid. Checking that your not going to drop by looking down the line would be good do be doing way before that point . Even paddling for the same wave ( shadowing ) hoping they wont get it can be so off putting. If we are in our final paddle strokes just before take off and we have to check that were not going to drop in we are doing that way too late. The vid is really about the physical aspect of the pop up. We cover the drop in in this old vid ruclips.net/video/J5z7l_W6pPs/видео.html it address's a bit of that stuff but a new one with real in the water scenarios would be better for sure .

    Tim, you have an amazing technique! Can you please answer a question? When you push with your hands, do you also push with your knees down on the board to get the hips off the ground? (I ve seen your videos and I am always under the impression that you rely exclusively on the momentum of your feet and shins going up to lift your hips. But here at home, by myself, I cant even fathom to do it without pushing the ground with my knees before getting them in the air to swing forward.) Thanks for your attention.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  2 года назад

      Hi Eric...thanks for that and there is no real push with the knees but you may well find that the leading knee will touch a bit as you push up. But don't be fooled ..the main drive is all from the arms and the legs just assist in the movement ..if we focus too much on the legs coming up we can get a bit lost..so think about pushing more than anything and it will come together in time.

    Tim. I love your videos. But I'm 61 and just learning over the past 3-4 summers. I don't think I have the physical strength to do a flick jump pop up. I've been working on something like your "hands-toes" pop up. It's a little slower but for me it seems the best I can do and I've made some progress. I want to keep trying and am not ready to quit. What do you suggest for an older, slightly weaker surfer???? Thanks

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  4 года назад

      Hi there ..Hands , toes jump will work a lot of the time as long as the waves are not too steep . I think sticking to that really can develop into a full jump but strength to weight ratio is vital so its down to some upper body work and flexibility . You could email to info@surfschoolsrilanka.com and we could send some training tips if you like . We really hope we see you at www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ and www.surfschoolanzarote.com/ one day.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 года назад

      Thanks so much . We used balance cushions ( cant remember the name ) that they sell for gym or yoga work and you can find then on line but they must not be wider than the board you use we found. However I thought of using basic inner tubes form scooters and they are excellent and a lot cheaper for sure. You don'd fully inflate them but have them to a point where they cause a small amount of instability . Please check out the description below to find out more about what we do.

    Been trying to perfect my technique for this flick jump because after two years surfing I am riding steeper waves on a much smaller board. I have a question. When I arch my back and push off the board and bring my legs forward, I push off my knee of my front foot (my right knee because I'm goofy). There is zero pressure or push on my back foot knee. Does that sound right?

      Hi Mark..thanks for that.. we used to buy yoga balance cushions but we then started to us the inner tubes for scooters which are much cheaper and we feel work better. I don't mean any disrespect here. I really love the work this channel produces, but I have to disagree with the popup content. It shouldn't be a popup, but rather a two step "walk" up process that is meant to be easy, light weight, fluid, and to put the surfer into a more athletic front-on stance from which they can easily compress/extend (this process is covered really well by Chris Mills a.k.a surf strength coach).
    If you watch any videos of top level surfers, literally none of them pop up and land with both feet slamming down on the board at the same time. This is really easy to see in Brent Rose's slow motion popup video that shows several world class surfers doing the "walk up" method in which the back food plants before the front foot with the back foot pointing just slightly forward (or at most directly perpendicular to the rail). You can see in this video (3:48) that the post flick-jump positioning actually has the knees pointing outward, with the back foot pointing slightly backward (mild poo stance).
    I'm not saying that the flick jump won't work for people, but what I am saying is that it's a lot harder to learn, and is a lot more physically demanding on the surfer (and the board) than learning the two step "walk up". It will also limit intermediate surfers in their ability to progress long term.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 года назад

      Hi ..no problem and disrespect taken at all and thanks for your comment . Over the past 38 years I have studied with other coaches what humans will do naturally to get up on a board and it can vary . The one movement without a step is quite common on steeper waves and in working with top surfers who stepped they found that they experienced stalling when connection of the back foot is first ..when they changed it that stopped happening . but in many cases this can happen quite a bit in waves like Wave Ranch where the take off is not particularly steep. But as you will see from that video surfers like Kelly and Florence and Medina still land with a full flick and Brent does remark that Kelly and Medina land " both feet at the same time " ..
      When I am coaching if I I have someone who does land back first first by a fraction I don't obsess about it but try to discourage the delay you see in the Chris Mills pop up . Chris also lands with the back foot not in full contact but I'm sure in real life that foot would come down for control eventually. Yep the hands toes jump in my video leaves me with a slight open back leg but as you say its slight ..but I think it could be better ...
      But I do disagree with the flick being physically demanding as its looks like it needs strength but in fact it just needs coordination ..the youngest we have got to to that technique was 3 years of age .. no strength to weight ratio at all. I dont really worry about the board at all as in an unbroken wave as the board descends there is far less pressure that we think ..with any pop up technique. I have many ways to coach people to their feet but so much of it is based around what that person can do naturally and then given time make changes ...

    I would also say that the back foot should be over the fins after you pop up. you probably do this unconsciously so you don't mention it.
    if your foot is two or three feet in front of the fins, you'll never do carving turns or throw spray.

    Every single "dry" popup practice technique is wrong. For anybody reading this, if you're practicing on the beach, heap up the sand under the tail end of your surfboard so that is is resting on the ground at an INCLINE, with the nose pointing to the ground, say a 15 degree incline. Then, you will experience something close to popping up on a board of the sloped face of a wave to get your technique down.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  5 лет назад

      That's always a good idea to have that slight angle and we use low level balance cushions to help and will use that technique in new videos at some time.
