Picking this up for my wife. The motor functions in her right hand are affected, so having the chance to have an extra button and one she can squeeze to simulate the button press help out. Now I need something to replace the right analog stick in some way.
I've been wanting paddles for years but there was no affordable option that didn't require modding the controller itself, so I'm very glad Sony made an official attachment. Together with my Kontrol Freeks, my DS4 is going to become the ultimate mutant.

I just hope i can get some good time out of it. I had a strikepack and it gave out before a month. I got a replacement and the same thing. I just get disconnects.
To anyone saying that back buttons are pointless/useless: Have you never played an online shooter and you try to jump and aim? You normally have to take your right thumb off of the right stick and press the jump button while shooting. This attachment is super useful for shooters and racing games. Many Halo players play on "Bumper Jumper" control scheme in which you press the left Bumper to jump while your right thumb stays on the right stick aiming while you're shooting someone online. These back buttons are useful.
This will help a lot of people with accessibility issues, which is a win in itself. The fact that it’s also an affordable option is icing on the cake. There’s a huge market for gamers who have a hard time using a standard controller that remains largely untapped. I hope to see more options like this, Microsoft’s adaptive controller, etc going forward.
exactly! im still trying to understand what this can be used for, at most accept and cancel for games with bizarre button layout, or maybe as an easier /\ in a fighting game/action game.
Marcos Danilo x and o so you can slide or jump without taking thumb off right stick. That’s what most will use it for. That’s like the standard layout. After that it can be used for many many different things
Whats hard to understand. Its just 2 back buttons. Nothing special. Left X right O. Default setup used by most back button setups. You want something better look for Brook P4 Marine. Now thats god like addon.
This is great for me because goodness knows i'm not paying $100-$200 for a controller just for extra buttons. Mapping L3 + R3 to this helps prolonging the life of the sticks before they start drifting and feeling weird. I hope Nyko makes one of this with integrated battery to expand the battery of the controller, similar to the Nyko PowerGrip they made for the Vita.
I don’t care what Sony says the x button is not a cross, if theyre gonna say it’s a cross now then they have to call it a 45 degree angled cross or off axis cross, but it’s not a cross. Is an upside down cross still a cross? No it’s a “petrine cross” or an inverted cross, but it’s not a cross.
I just gone one and I had a bit of a hard time getting it on. It's definitely something you have to get used to because it feels a little intrusive on your lower fingers, but I feel like this can definitely give you an edge once you get used to it. It'll definitely help prolong the life of your joysticks if you move the R3 and L3 there.
I don't understand why the Dualshock 4 and Xbox One controllers didn't just have back buttons by default. Scuff controllers were a thing way before those consoles came out. If you played shooter on console during the end of the PS3/360's lifespan and were serious about it, you pretty much had to have one.
I really don't need a screen on my buttons attachment... Just give an onscreen PS4 UI option to configure the buttons, I do NOT need to pay for a screen on the back of my controller I won't look at. I'm already annoyed that the PS4 has the useless light bar I can't turn off draining battery for the PS camera PS move garbage I don't use.
@jesus barrera Why would Sony be releasing their controller addons for ps4/ps5 compatibility with PC compatibility in mind? They are not a PC gaming company.
@jesus barrera it's not that hard to release updated drivers that support this inside a dualshock 4... and again, PC compatibility is not their focus, and PS Now is not very big.
The OLED screen might be on the back to give it extra support against the player pushing it. Pushing from the front might put more strain on the connectors and that hinge.
I think the display is not at the top, because they didn't want to make/ order a custom displays, what would increase the price. It seems that this is just a display taken from a watch, so a low-cost item.
I don't know why some people in the comments complaining about the back screen. listen, I'm not trying to make fun of the Xbox family of Elite controllers nor the Scaf or anything like that, but if you wanted to assign the micro buttons on those then you need your PC monitor or your TV to see what's went when or you need to play a short guessing game, some controllers like the third party controllers made for the switch will have a light bleeping when you want to assign the buttons, what this accessory did is adding a cheap screen to tell you what sort of button you have or going to assigned to each micro buttons on the fly! no need for a TV nor need to blindly do it it's just made things much easier to do, you have a screen that you can check on it anytime you want. they didn't ask you to pay hundred of dollars for it it's freaking $30! judging by the reviews it seems it's getting good ratings too, on ps4 this thing will save you the $200 to $300 you paid for those pro controllers. really no need to hate, if you don't like it just don't buy it it's that simple.
A few years ago I was wanting a Scuf for quite a while, mainly for free roam pvp in GTAO (mainly a city boi here and a beach player 2nd.) so it appealed to me. But I heard bad things bout reliability and the warranty of them. Then Astro announced the C40, but it costs even more but was appealing.... and then shit came up and forgot bout it. But this. This I like. Accessible price wise, seems pretty decent and will do what I want. I checked our fred meyers and homeboy didn’t know what I was talking bout, said they may have it in 3-4 months. Gonna check wal mart today and GameStop 2nd if they don’t have it.. For the people asking WHY you would want this. It’s only for competitive shooters you would want it for. Not RPGS, story driven, platformers, puzzle, etc. With this, combined with running “Alternate FPS 2” in my settings, I can hold L1 and instead of taking my left thumb off the left analog stick to press Left on the d-pad to toss a sticky and kill myself to avoid: cops, getting a point on me from someone, avoid this and that, I can just press the left back button. AND instead of pressing L1 and taking either my right index finger off R1 to press X to combat roll to avoid someone’s lock on, I could just press the right back button. The whole point is so your mainly using analog sticks, all the L and R buttons, and the back buttons. Games like that where you have to move your fingers round the D-Pad or the X,O, square or triangle button can cause some pain after a few hours AND requires more time then pressing a back button which can cost you a kill or death. But if you play like Chrono Trigger, or Resident Evil, or Spyro, or SIMS, or Gran Turismo, etc, this isn’t for you, save your money. IF you play GTAO COMPETITIVELY, COD, BF, Fortnite, PUBG, etc, THIS IS FOR YOU.

They sold me something used as NEW! If anyone from Gamestop Corporate is reading this post, this is absolutely unacceptable. I will never shop at your store again.
For commonly used inputs in a multiplayer game you can map those to it so you don’t have to move your hand as much to get to those buttons. It’s a very small advantage but that’s the point.
The principle is simple. Utilize fingers that historically have been useless in gaming until lately. It is fantastic for FPS games in which your thumb can stay on the right stick, continually focused on aiming, rather than splitting that between aim/jump/reload/etc.
Ray D maybe for you but for us gamers that play FPS and other game that could use easy triggers it’s a good product especially since it’s affordable and not a 200$ scuf controller

I know what you mean, my friend used to refer to the "square" button as "box". It irritated me because I always had to stop and think about what button he was referring to.
I bought two of these attachments for my two controllers and have found it to be very reliable comfortable and can improve more than first person shooter experiences. Such as gang beasts need for speed any game that has a dpad function
For commonly used inputs in a multiplayer game you can map those to it so you don’t have to move your hand as much to get to those buttons. It’s a very small advantage but that’s the point.
Scotty Stremy, It’s mostly for First Person Shooters, where you’re going to have your thumbs on both sticks, and this attachment makes it so you don’t have to move your thumb off the stick to press a button.
To me it's just as good as having the extra buttons on a mouse to move between webpages or macro keys for doing tasks in art or programming. On a controller if you hate reaching for the L3/R3 on the sticks or want to move a awkward to use input to them, or your out of luck if there is no remappable controls in the game and only a default or a few presets this makes things so much easier. It's not for everyone but I think it's a great addition. As someone that doesn't mind the L3/R3 but has gotten sick of how I reach for them to sprint I'd be open to a button to do it as I don't remember the time something like L1/L Button (if going off of PlayStation or Xbox games) being used for sprint isn't a thing anymore (I recall maybe Halo Reach with L for sprint, can't remember others since sticks for sprinting is common now) and I kind of prefer sticks being used for scoping not sprinting.
I've had this for a couple of days, and at the price point. It is amazing imo, i have owned/own multiple custom controllers. My company of choice has been Battle Beaver. And i would of never paid for any of the expensive controllers i have if this attachment was out before. I think some of the things you mentioned you didn't care for were a little nit picky. Especially for the price... Its very easy to use, i find it very quick to switch through profiles during games, and i feel like the buttons are very responsive and in a very comfortable location. I have used it on Smite, Apex, COD, and Rocket League.
To be honest, suddenly a little OLED screen in the DS5 controller isn't so far fetched now. I actually didn't think it could be done (because of battery life) when i saw some of the mockups online. But now, i think, yeah, why not. If turns off like this, i think it would be possible.
I suspect the screen is not at the top because the download pressure would of been taken up by the connectors which won't be good. By putting it at the bottom the pressure would be taken up by the plastic moulding against the thumb-stick towers.
The possible reason they went with OLED is because it is thinner and uses less power than LCD. They probably didnt want to cause too much battery drain on the controller itself.
I feel like I have trouble holding the controller without pressing the buttons, anyone have any tips for this? Might be tough for people with bigger hands
I have huge hands so it's a little difficult for me to get used to. I got it for Apex Legends. But I'm sure once the muscle memory kicks in, it'll feel just right. 🤞🏽
People always attribute these innovations to Sony, but the first non custom/super expensive controller I remember that came with this was actually the Steam Controller (except unlike this one it could have totally unique functions).
I'm actually really happy with this because since I use tactical controls for shooters, I can't play many of them effectively (doom, r6, destiny 2) because the tactical control scheme isn't supported. Definitely gonna pick this up instead of dropping a bunch of money on a scuf controller.
You have to click the button on the SIDE or the entire button will work ??? I'm asking because the SCUF paddles are in the "middle"...not on the sides. If we can press the button exactly where the SCUF paddles are...will be great!
The buttons are awkward if your used to a scuf or dominator strike pack. They should have dropped the buttons down to be more comfortable. They are kind of thick and with the smaller ps4 controller it just feels weird. It does work well. With the exception of it will randomly turn off if you have it wired while playing. Found that out several times while charging and playing at the same time. It don't feel like it's going break. It stays in place just fine.i swapped it on a few different controllers and it works fine. For me I do prefer the strikepack even though it's wired. I had one for a few years and it's really durable and reliable. I dropped it a hundred plus times and it is fine. Mainly I like the paddle location better. Ps4 Version is a good choice if you never used anything like this before.
this seems really helpful for fighting games on controller, no lie. you use your index and middle finger on stick but usually only index on pad and these buttons making use of the middle fingers is great. hope to hear good things.

Anything: comes out

@ Nice? Good for him.
Great review. I'll most likely pick this up. Affordable and easy. I actually had no idea this was coming out. Thanks.
you didn't actually try the thing!
It works. Just fine feels weird then again i think the ps4 controller is small. I use a xbox on my ps4 to solve this problem.
@@NatsumeKonno what adapter do you use?
@@Lucalaurin currently Brook P4 Marine. I also have a Brook super Converter xbox1 to ps4 Purple.
The OLED screen can’t go on top because that’s where the audio pass through is.
They could just lower the audio jack lol it's not very thick
Make it hover over the speaker
i think they may have done it specifically to prevent what he suggests. for game balancing i dont think they wsnt people to be able to take huge advantage of being able to simultaneously assign buttons.
Picking this up for my wife.
The motor functions in her right hand are affected, so having the chance to have an extra button and one she can squeeze to simulate the button press help out.
Now I need something to replace the right analog stick in some way.
Looks like sony had alot of screens for a smartwatch that wasnt successfull
Is there any smartwatch that's actually successful? (other than maybe the athletic type ones)

Does it make headphones louder because my cloud 2 seems low volume on regular controller
I've been wanting paddles for years but there was no affordable option that didn't require modding the controller itself, so I'm very glad Sony made an official attachment. Together with my Kontrol Freeks, my DS4 is going to become the ultimate mutant.
I use a scuf and I got mines today. I put the iconx KFs on it and it's a beauty. I love it more than my actual scuf. I've had my scuf for 2 years and this is it. The paddles click so nicely. I just hope i can get some good time out of it. I had a strikepack and it gave out before a month. I got a replacement and the same thing. I just get disconnects.
To anyone saying that back buttons are pointless/useless:
Have you never played an online shooter and you try to jump and aim? You normally have to take your right thumb off of the right stick and press the jump button while shooting. This attachment is super useful for shooters and racing games.
Many Halo players play on "Bumper Jumper" control scheme in which you press the left Bumper to jump while your right thumb stays on the right stick aiming while you're shooting someone online.
These back buttons are useful.
Still waiting for the "order food while playing" button. MS and Sony are lazy AF
dario HC i mean, the Xbox one had a skype app, so there's that I guess.
I'm just absolutely ecstatic that I can re-map Circle in Soulsbornes now so I can camera and dodge. Game changer...hopefully.
Hell yea. Can I borrow some soy extract?
Really caught of guard 2 days before the whole world knew it’s gonna come out
This doesn’t have “macros” it’s just additional buttons. Those two things are very different.
exactly! im still trying to understand what this can be used for, at most accept and cancel for games with bizarre button layout, or maybe as an easier /\ in a fighting game/action game.
Marcos Danilo x and o so you can slide or jump without taking thumb off right stick. That’s what most will use it for. That’s like the standard layout. After that it can be used for many many different things
Marcos Danilo just reduces delay between press buttons by moving them off your thumb
Whats hard to understand. Its just 2 back buttons. Nothing special. Left X right O. Default setup used by most back button setups.
You want something better look for Brook P4 Marine. Now thats god like addon.
Missed opportunity to make the screen on front could be used by some games as a secondary screen like the Dreamcast VMU.
PS4 is close to death, not many new games that are not in finishing phase are coming, and no developers would update their games for that feature
Adem Foster tell that to the PS1’s GameStation.
Your kinda right in theory, but where on front of the dual shock 4 would the screen go without obstructing any buttons/inputs
Everyone has called it the "X" button since 95 so it's the x button
This is great for me because goodness knows i'm not paying $100-$200 for a controller just for extra buttons.
Mapping L3 + R3 to this helps prolonging the life of the sticks before they start drifting and feeling weird.
I hope Nyko makes one of this with integrated battery to expand the battery of the controller, similar to the Nyko PowerGrip they made for the Vita.
Only took to the end of the life cycle of the Dual Shock 4 for Sony to actually do anything with the EXT port.
Just what I needed! To the controller to have a small sack close enough to touch.
Cross is a plus sign. Not X.
Should’ve released these ages ago.
No one, absolutely no one.
Spawn Wave: So I opened it up. 😂
All of us when the trailer came out: they are finally using the EXT plug
SpawnWave:Well yes but actually no
I view it as a option I will pass on.
Move on peasant
I wish it were international I think it’s us and japan currently I really wanna get my hands on these
Can't speak for other countries, but here in Germany it's coming out in February. Maybe it's the same where you live. 🤞
In EU, it is being released in February 14.
I think the display is not at the top, because they didn't want to make/ order a custom displays, what would increase the price. It seems that this is just a display taken from a watch, so a low-cost item.
I love Xbox controllers for their layout but god dualshocks are beautiful.
Chrono trigger isn't on ps4
Edwin Gonzalez ik I’m just using it as an example, it’s always first game that comes to mind when I think RPG.
the fact that Cross is the official name for the X button still hurts me internally
@Mr.J maybe... but that does not stop the pain
Why do y'all need a back button?? An it's clearly an "X"
Andrew Riegel It’s an X, but sony wants us to call it cross.
Even spawn was chuckling while he said it.
I like to use it for L3 and R3 since they can cause drifting issues later on
@@philatio1744 It's been "cross" for 25 years. Japanese people refer to that symbol as "cross".
Like the game Street Fighter X Tekken is said as "Street Fighter cross Tekken".
Couldn't do the screen on the front due to accidental presses of the screen when using joy sticks.
Wonder how long until someone ports Doom to play on the OLED screen on the thing.
Move over, Switch plebs, Sony's back in the handheld business!
With the controller backwards?
no there not after having 2 handhelds flop hard they learned there lessen that they can't beat Nintendo in the HANDHELD side of video games ;)
I picked this today from Gamestop here in Columbus, Ohio. Out all the GameStops in Columbus, only one had it in stock. Drove there, picked it up and took it back home. Looked at the box and noticed it had double tape seal. Didn’t think anything of it and opened it....no plastic over the LED screen and scratches on the screen. I’m so pissed off. They sold me something used as NEW! If anyone from Gamestop Corporate is reading this post, this is absolutely unacceptable. I will never shop at your store again.
I don't get it.
Ray D Nothing could serve less of a purpose than your worthless commentary, you antagonistic moron.
Ray D maybe for you but for us gamers that play FPS and other game that could use easy triggers it’s a good product especially since it’s affordable and not a 200$ scuf controller
No other controller allows for programming a trigger as a back button...it appears that this does...so i can have 2 r2triggers for an fps game?
steam controller does.
When you say “cross” do you mean “x” 😐
Was about to say this, don't know why it bothered me so much.
Sony officially came out and said that the "X" button is, and has always been the cross button...I know its stupid.
Awesome video Jon(SW).
Jon bringing back the Cross vs X debate lol.
That Flexible Hinge for connecting into the PS4 Headphone Jack is definitely better than a static one cuz that would break easily. This PS4 Back Button Attachment is pretty cool and neat and very interesting too see but I feel it's gonna be more of a novelty tho.
I am upset he is calling X "cross". I dont know why but I am lol
Kalil Jama Sony officially names it the cross button about 2 months ago
I know what you mean, my friend used to refer to the "square" button as "box". It irritated me because I always had to stop and think about what button he was referring to.
I bought two of these attachments for my two controllers and have found it to be very reliable comfortable and can improve more than first person shooter experiences. Such as gang beasts need for speed any game that has a dpad function
And i have had no performance issues over extended time and play through
To be honest don't see a purpose for it 🤷♂️
For commonly used inputs in a multiplayer game you can map those to it so you don’t have to move your hand as much to get to those buttons. It’s a very small advantage but that’s the point.
Scotty Stremy, It’s mostly for First Person Shooters, where you’re going to have your thumbs on both sticks, and this attachment makes it so you don’t have to move your thumb off the stick to press a button.
seems very useful for rhythm games like djmax, project diva and deemo etc.
It's not for u bruh move on peasant
Finally i can remap the option button.
This seems kinda whatevers
Its for the multiplayer FPS junkies. If you aren't jump and drop shotting in your call of duty games this isn't going to appeal to you at all.
I don't even own a PlayStation, I'm just here for the teardown.
It's X, not ✝️
I've had this for a couple of days, and at the price point.
Can you click the button relly fast
Three minutes ago
Ok, but what is the resolution of the oled screen?
I wish if it still had a headphone jack at the bottom of the attachment so you could use your mic while using it
It has a pass through
To be honest, suddenly a little OLED screen in the DS5 controller isn't so far fetched now.
Title.
Me: I don't think I ever asked, but I'm in.
this thing is a fucking life saver for bloodborne because you can actually sprint and not break your hand
The possible reason they went with OLED is because it is thinner and uses less power than LCD. They probably didnt want to cause too much battery drain on the controller itself.
I can't wait to pick this up. This works on PS3 and PC? That's Fucking dope I'm excited
I own a $200 c40, but I'd have absolutely never have bought it if they had this when I purchased it. Dualshock 4 is the GOAT
I guess if you can’t afford custom gaming controller. This helps on playing CoD doing drop shot easier than switching the button settings.
6:55 What you describe as a "cancel" button is a 🚫. That most likely is to indicate you are leaving that blank, and not assigning a button.
I'm usually a fan of putting it in because the immediate response is "Oh Baby You're so Big".
- Happy New Years you Mothers!😍
Sony’s response to a pro controller:
I have no issue with mine. Like you said I just leave it on cause I use a cable to charge. Just have to get used to the extra bulk in the back.
People always attribute these innovations to Sony, but the first non custom/super expensive controller I remember that came with this was actually the Steam Controller (except unlike this one it could have totally unique functions).
I'm looking forward to the EXT port finally being demystified so more third party toys can make use of it properly.
