  • Vegan MP, The Hon. Emma Hurst gave her first speech in NSW Parliament. Addressing the Upper House for the first time, new senator for the Animal Justice Party, Emma Hurst, criticized the Government for failing to protect animals, and implored members from both sides of Parliament to work with her to change the way our society treats animals in NSW.
    In her address she said, “Animal cruelty is not a left or right issue. But sadly it is one that our government has failed to respond to. And that’s why I decided to become part of this Parliament. I believe in NSW we can do better.”
    “The fate of each of these animals rests with our willingness to choose kindness over greed, respectability over indifference, and to be leaders instead of led.” The vegan bodybuilding MP spoke of the 4Corner’s live animal export vision exposed in 2011 and gave explicit examples of animal suffering on farms in NSW which saw visitors in the gallery and various MPs in tears.
    The MP’s promise ‘to the animals’, was the climax of her speech stating, “No matter if you are skin, scales, fur or feathers, no matter the supposed value of your financial worth, or lack thereof, native or non-native, rodent, or fish, or cow, or dog, I will protect you. I stand by you. I will fiercely defend you. It is our party that will keep that promise, and we will never, ever let you down. You have all of me.”
    She is now one of two Animal Justice Party MPs elected to the upper house in NSW who hold the balance of power with nine other crossbenchers.

They had it all wrong and i clearly told them FIRE WAS KOALAS IMMINENT THREAT, not logging and as far as forest removal its cattle farming, which took their primary forests. Emma is corrupt as f, as they all are, they refuse to listen, theyre giant narcissists who go for the cash and want praise. The end ha ha

    I shared on my Facebook wall hoping, beyond hope, people will watch.
    This was my post
    For anyone who wonders why I can never go back to how I was before I identified as a #vegan, I invite you to watch and listen, really listen, to Emma Hurst share the truth of factory farming.
    If you choose to still consume animals after this, I have to wonder what it would take for you to realize how inhumane animal agriculture actually is.
    When people say, "I only eat humanely killed animals," when did killing for one's taste buds become humane? Just because something has been going on for decades, even centuries, doesn't make it humane.
    Obviously, there will always be opposing points of view about the "right" to consume animal and dairy products, but the fact is 99% of animal products on plates, sticks, and in buns are produced on factory farms.
    The one regret I have is this; I wish I would have gone vegan sooner. I truly regret that I did not connect the dots sooner.
    Rather than move on to the next "interesting" post, please, please, please watch and listen. Then let your conscious be your guide.

    I live in the USA. One of our elected leaders, Corey Booker is vegan, but when asked in a presidential debate about veganism, his reply was nothing but pandering to the majority. On the other hand, he has worked to get some progressive laws passed that benefit farm animals. We vegans need to convince our fellow voters to go vegan so that he could be as bold as your speech was yet remain in office.

    Emma Hurst, you renew my faith in the human race. You are the first person I have ever heard in government give a strong and clear voice to those that cannot speak for themselves. Those that we have used, abused, tortured, and given no respect for their lives. What I would give to have a member of the United States government, or even a first lady, with the backbone you have shown to stand up for the blatant cruelty that exists every day on our planet. I see a lot of smug and bored faces behind you. I don’t think they understand how many people there are out there who are on your side! We’ve had enough - cruelty is blossoming and growing throughout this world and it’s starting to show itself by slaughtering our children. It starts with the most vulnerable of living creatures, and sooner or later it does come up the chain. You are wonderful and thank you, thank you!

      Regarding your need to be healthy - a well planned plant based diet is healthy (according to, among others, the Association of Nutrition and Dietetics). I can show you the relevant quotes if you like.
      Regarding other animals - vegans are telling other humans not to eat meat, not carnivorous animals. If you’re thinking that’s inconsistent, consider that other animals cannot make moral decisions and (unlike most humans) rely on meat to survive

      @@Meathead-10810 Thank you for responding! I appreciate that you had difficulty planning, it's difficult to have a productive conversation about what that implies about a plant-based diet without you being willing to share more information. That said, if you accept that consuming animal products causes suffering, then I think you should do track nutrients, get bloodwork done, and speak to a nutritionist (assuming that you are able to do so) before reverting to such animal products. I don't think there will ever be irrefutable proof of one optimal diet, but research continues to suggest that a plant-based diet is perfectly healthy.

    1. Have you ever resided in any rural region of Australia ?
    2. Have you ever personally witnessed the effect that billions of mice can have, on the grain producing areas of Australia ?
    3. Are you aware of the horrific species extinction statistics, that are a direct result of domestic and feral cats.
    4. Did you realise that packs of wild dogs in the Northern Territory, run amok in the Bush…attacking wildlife, livestock and humans.
    5. I could elaborate ad infinitum, re the need for balance and compassion as per our Australian flora and fauna, however time does not permit.
    6. Finally - disarming Australians…while the world witnesses the savagery and barbarism of the Russian invasion of Ukraine ???
    7. It is not a question of IF, it is a question of WHEN…Australia will be in armed conflict with the communist dictatorship of China.

    Excellent speech. What an eloquent and compelling speaker. I appreciate that the Hon. Emma Hurst introduced animal rights as a nonpartisan issue, but I can just imagine the defensiveness and dismissal of her colleagues and political opponents.
    Things that I would have liked to hear the Hon. Emma Hurst include in her speech:
    1) empathy and compassion for animals are indicators of intelligence and advanced thinking;
    2) the links between violence against animals and violence against women;
    3) the links between epidemics/pandemics and the treatment of animals;
    4) slaughterhouse workers are subjected to terrible working conditions, and often suffer trauma as a result of the tasks they are required to perform
    5) the links between industrial factory farming and climate change / pollution
    I wish the Hon. Emma Hurst all the best - the world needs more politicians who are dedicated to advocating for animals.
