In case anyone had not noticed, Todd is doing a Steve Smith solo from his younger days. Those are all Steve's chops that Todd is playing. He is paying homage to Steve. It's not about who won or who was better that day.
@@truthseekerKJV When did music or drumming become a competition? It's not the same thing as drag racing or something. Let people play and enjoy what they like. There is no best drummer. Every bit is an opinion, that's all it is
Two equally amazing drummers on one stage and total masters of their craft! Todd Sucherman and Steve Smith are the greatest at what they do, and to compare the two to say who’s better is just sheer ignorance and immature!
I was there with my parents to experience that. Smith has long been one of my favorites but Sucherman is really moving up my list. I’ll agree with one of the other comments that Sucherman was better that night. I’m glad I was on Todd’s side in the middle back by the bar because it was a great line of sight to see him. Great night!
Yeah and I am not being critical we all learn like that, I recognize that because I’m a big Steve Smith fan and can see Todd worked on what I learned from the first two Steve Smith “VHS” videos… and Todd worked it out better than I did!
Todd is so talented it's crazy! Dude is just on another level. Steve is of course the man as well and one of the most influential drummers of the modern age.
Steve was one of my biggest influences from a kid to present, now I can honestly say that since discovering Todd's mastery, he is as big an influence on me as Steve, two of the best at what they do.
Two AWESOME musicians. To me this was not a competition by any means, but a display of each man’s expression. Have a preference, that’s to be expected. But to discredit Steve Smith is just dumb. I’ve attended 3 of his drum clinics and the man is amazing. Very few of us commenting have or will attain what he has. All that said, Todd is one of my all time favorites, as is Steve.
Well Spokane my friend Attended a drum clinic w/another drummer Didnt even know Todd Sucherman or that he was in Styx. Well after the clinic he put on he is my Top 5 favorites.Todd was nice enough to spend 5 minutes w/me after I asked how I could make my left hand as strong as my right. What he taught me&through Hrs of practice changed my playing tremendously S.Smith omg his single&dbles are so smooth.Makes work around kit effortlessly
Oh you're right about that I ain't going to ever come close to either one of them. I'd say I'm an intermediate drummer at best. One last thing have you seen Todd Suchermans solo on drumeo? it's freaking so musical
i was waiting for the SS insane fills on that solo from Todd...the ones that changed the game in the late 70's...no other rock drummer played a solo like this in a stadium...10 bands all the top of that era and you drove home with that solo in your head! WHO WAS STEVE SMITH??? He was that epic with Journey folks back in the day! Sorry you millenials cannot go back in time, but the 70's was like no other time for music. Everything was fresh and new and mind blowing...Journey live then AC/DC w Bon, then Boston, then Cheap Trick, then this new band called Van Halen and this new guitarist named Randy Rhoads and...it went on and on and on...
Never cared for Steve Smith as a drummer. Period. But maybe that's because after Journey's 2nd. album, they were no longer rockers, but LOVE BALLADS. And guess what?; those albums weren't with Steve....but Aynsley Dunbar. HE rocked.
Simple two amazing drummers !!
Steve must be so proud to have been such a huge influence on Todd!
Todd's Playing is fuckin' Insane!
Steve Machine Gun Smith
Todd with so much class, honor, and respect lets Steve kniw just how much he means to him.
Beautiful thing to watch.

2 of the best drummers living on earth!!!!
You need to get out more. There are 50 drummers out there I can think of that smoke these two like a fish.

Love Steve’s reaction at 1:01 when Todd smashed that single handed 32 note riff! Total Mic drop lick right there!

Two of the best! You can tell Todd is a big Steve Smith fan.
Steve smith is from another planet. I have one of his solos transcripts and it's mind blowing that a person can play it.
He admits it in all his classes, vlogs, his hero AND why not ??!!!!

I love the way Steve is enjoying Todd's solo
Todd is so talented it's crazy! Dude is just on another level. Steve is of course the man as well and one of the most influential drummers of the modern age.
Both masters of their craft, and their influences unmistakeable. In Steve's solo, it was such a modern interpretation of the great Louie Bellson.
To men in loves. feel for drum like master.
Todd is the winner of this Gun battle... Two of the greatest stick controllers for sure!
I think Steve slowed down the solo and then at the end he kills it! I give it to Steve
How does one determine the "winner"? They're both two different styles!!
Steve was one of my biggest influences from a kid to present, now I can honestly say that since discovering Todd's mastery, he is as big an influence on me as Steve, two of the best at what they do.
both musicians are very cool, and very different.
Two of the best ever and two of my drumming idols.
Freaking EPIC! Listened to this about ten times!
Awesome talent from both! Great drumming!
Two of the best!
still love it!!
