@@matthewmartin9120 - Obviously, otherwise there would be no recording! That said, I know fellow mix engineers who work with Steve. They all tell me the same thing: Hardly ANY compression. He just actually DOES have a huge drum sound. OK, his grip looks weird, and it probably is, but it seems to work for him. I'm a left-handed traditional grip drummer by trade (when I'm not mixing full-time), and I always find other player's techniques fascinating.
That was by far the best performance I seen in years. I watched all these performances and I love all the gospel drummers, but that was mind blowing by one of the legends. Great job
Omfg, Steve Smith is a living legend and that was one of the best VFJams LIVE! I have ever seen. Thank god for this series and all the inspiration it brings. Same time next year?? Please!!!
There are only a select few drummers nowadays that can be considered "the elite" and Steve is in that class! He has continued to elevate his abilities and has become one of the very best drummers alive today!!! Just WOW!!!
My man...fundamentally sound and musical. Would love to see guys like Simon Phillips, Rayford Griffin, Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gregg Bissonnette and Weckl jamming with this group. IMHO, this is the best vjam session yet.
I remember seeing Steve the first time with Journey on "Midnight Special". Now at 65 he has more taste AND chops than pretty much anyone. He has ALWAYS left the musicians around him flourish, without stepping on their toes and his meter is flawless. When Danny Seraphine was fired from Chicago GUESS who he went to for lessons. Steve Smith !!! Most versatile drummer in 50 years IMO ! Thanks for this VFJams
Vic Firth Sessions are aaaaawesome. The musicians, the quality of the sound and editing. One of the best features on the net. Congrats to everybody involved in this. Thanks a lot.
I had to comment a 2nd time on just how damn good Steve S. sounds!!!!!!!....... Listening to him ever since a kid, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC top notch playing! ....Thanks again Vic Firth, Steve and entire great group for this, and all the continued support!
I started sweating before Steve's solo because I knew it would be his usual mind blowing combination of chops, finesse, power, personality and musicality. Mr. Smith never disappoints and this is my new favorite channel EVER! Great production Everyone!
I can’t like this enough! Holy crap!!! Steve Smith makes me either burn my kit and never look back OR lock myself in a soundproof room and practice for about 5 years straight. Unreal...
Really cool to see a living legend playing with these younger guys and gals. I’ll never forget the first time I heard that killer drum fill in the Journey song Separate Ways (Worlds Apart). I was maybe 10 years old.
While I don't want to take anyone out of the "just listening" head-space one of the things that struck me with this jam was the thousands of hours of collective work that it takes to create 5 perfect minutes of music like this.
Is the bassist played with Eric Gales few years ago, on tour? I think i recognize him, at the "guitare en scène" festival in Saint Julien, France. Eric Gales explained that he was in the band just from the past week... He was really amazing, as the rest of the band
I’m not sure that most will even understand what Steve Smith did with this one.... a huge lesson was taught here and had absolutely nothing to do with the flash of the instrument it’s too much to type. For those who know, KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT I think this is the best one to me so far. Excellent job
Absolutely Fab! Equals the first time I saw the “Lingus” video. I love this way of showing masters at work in the studio with an audience. My day is made and I’ll bet I’m not the only one.
At the start I was thinking "Hmm this is a bit laid back from Steve" but then the timer hit 4:30 and from then on I was in absolute awe. The flams, double stroke rolls and the musicality, WOW! Steve Smith, Benny Greb, Lenny Reece, Eric Harland amongst others, we've been spoiled.
I love the different kit sounds in these videos, they're all sublime in their own way. Kick sound in this one is unbelievable, hits the spot perfectly and talk about FEEL, this man has it
Unbeliveable!!!! Thx to the band!!!! Thx to Steve Smith!!!! Well done!!!! Everytime I see this video I'm speechless!!! Thx so much!!!!! Greetings from germany Christoph 👍👍👍👍👍
I have been blessed to see him live several times with Journey!!!!! But when I heard his album Vital Information, I knew he was so Very Special and one of the Very Best!!!!
this one is the best of the vic firth series, at least technically . the perfection of phrasing and timing of steve smith is ridiculous. and it´s one of the most complex songs if not the most.
Watching Steve Smith is like watching a Rolls Royce drive by in slow motion. That was freakin incredible ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Its the "Beatdown" Brown and U know your is doing something correctly when u have Beatdown praising you...
I totally agree Rob
Can someone etch that quote into granite somewhere? Thank you Rob Brown for making my day. Love your channel AND your playing!
Yup, classy and smoooooth.
I played a gif with steve last year he’s the nicest musician I’ve ever met
this mightve just been the best vf jams ever like no joke
@sean maney I think sean wright has the best imo
So far ... yes I absolutely agree 🔥🔥🔥
I MIGHT HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU
Hahaha you almost sound concerned hahaha
Owen Enser yeah i did too but maaaaan issa toss up imo
I love his technique. So. Relaxed. No extra effort, and he sounds huge.
AlexLeeDrums pause.
I also love Steve Smith drumming and he holds the stick in his left hand in a true classic manner!
He is relaxed, fluid and his hand AND feet technique is nothing less than perfect...
Agreed. So few drummer smile while they play as well. Brings a great vibe to everyone around him.
yes dude! his sound is absolutely massive. Loved his playing ever since I picked up the first GHS album
Stupid ridiculous how good Steve is... this is like my 200th watch already
I'm on 201
This was such incredible fun. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!!!
Cody Wright you was killing it bro
You are a machine
13/8, 5/8, 4/4, 2/4. Time signatures all over the place.
His grip was so light, like he's barely holding the sticks, wow!
Seriously, you'd think the sticks would just fall out his hands.
Yet the sound is full with that relaxed grip. 👍
All micd up...

Bro you like that? check out Dave Elitch.
Next one Vinnie too please!!! :)
Please !!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Ahhhh yeah Jeroen!
If he gets back with Vic perhaps
The Jam is only for Vic Firth Artists.... Vinnie does not play Vic.
@@vladeguignimusic Yes man, thats clear, thank you !!!
That was by far the best performance I seen in years. I watched all these performances and I love all the gospel drummers, but that was mind blowing by one of the legends. Great job
A complete and utter colossus on his instrument.
That's a great line dude.
Absolutely. If you have not seen it search insurbordination. Jesus.
Can we give a BIG 🤚🏽for the people we never see but did an amazing job?
👉🏼the audio engineers 👉🏼Kevin, Chris, Tyler, Ben and Dave.
Thank you!
You are absolute right!!!!! Greetings from germany Christoph 👍👍👍👍👍
The sound engineer mixing the snare drum should be given a raise.
Is it me or is the bass player always having the most fun.
Wow, that dynamic action at 10:48, Stevo is a savage.
Massive sound - no dampening on that kit - clear ambassadors and let em resonate - take that sound engineer haha - love it
Thank you!
I do think his snare rings too much to my taste. But hey, that's personal preference.
Omfg, Steve Smith is a living legend and that was one of the best VFJams LIVE! I have ever seen. Thank god for this series and all the inspiration it brings. Same time next year?? Please!!!
4:28 to 5:43 -- All of that sounds like a single fill in odd time. The most amazing drum fill I've ever heard.
Oh Lord, Steve Smith is legendary
Steve Smith is undoubtedly one of the best drummers alive... Wow effect guaranteed when he sits behind a drum kit...
1% effort 99% skill. Steve is so smooth!
He didn’t even break a sweat and that was a 100 degree performance 🔥
So much skill dialled in
steve smith is a legend in drumming
There are only a select few drummers nowadays that can be considered "the elite" and Steve is in that class! He has continued to elevate his abilities and has become one of the very best drummers alive today!!! Just WOW!!!
plain and simple bro
Everyone in the room knows they seen a genius at work
Everyone seems so happy and honored to play with him. As it should be!
litteraly as soon as the notification popped up on my phone i clicked it it was like a reflex lol
Damn his speed and rhythm is just crazy. One of the greatest ever
The way he holds his sticks looks like he's holding a wand. And he's making magic out of those drums.
Robert Sput Searight = *LEGIT*
sick arrangement.
5:47 His reaction is priceless!
I shook my head too lol
That's because Sean Wright found out he was wrong😂
Please, please, please. Call Mr. Kiko Freitas for a session!
he is great drummer but he is not Zildjian artist ( Istanbul Mehmet endorser ) !
Big fan since the Jean-Luc Ponty days ! Steve STILL KILL,S !
I love how easy Steve's feel of 8 and 5 and repeat feels. Incredible
The best perfomance from this series. Mr Smith.
This is so far the best vfjam I have seen
Just wooooooo!!!!!!
Cody Wright holding down the bass duties like a boss. Such a high level of musicianship displayed, really something to admire.
❤️
One of the most amazing drummer out there. His stick control never ceases to amaze me! 🔥
My man...fundamentally sound and musical. Would love to see guys like Simon Phillips, Rayford Griffin, Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gregg Bissonnette and Weckl jamming with this group. IMHO, this is the best vjam session yet.
Roy Terrell aw yes da old sku hammahs
Sonny Emory would be another good one.
In fact, based on my calculations, this the best so far. Creativity, dynamics, speed, authenticity, ...check!
Different level is the machine gun
WOAH... now EVERY jazz/fusion player will want to bring TWO kick drums to their gigs! 😂
And just like that, every drummer is rethinking their technique. Props to VF, Steve Smith, and the band!
So good!!!!!! And that solo!!!!!!!
Between 5:30 and 5:40!
Insane! With that, now he is in my top ten!
OH....MY....GOODNESS....best one yet! So much sweeter because I grew up listening to him play, and now still today enjoying his work!!
Huge..Steve nailed it... Big thumb up
Steve NEVER disappoints. One of the GOATs fo sho! Can we take a second to acknowledge that shirt?
Classy in every way possible! What a hip guy!
Steve is an absolute master, one the best session for me! And when I saw Elise Testone on vocals... 😃😍
I know, right!!? My heart goes a-flutter every time I see her!
She's strikingly beautiful.

The living legend himself, Mr Steve Smith......
I wanted to hit the "I REALLY REALLY REALLY LIKE THIS" button, but I couldn't find one.
Very cool!!
Vic Firth Sessions are aaaaawesome. The musicians, the quality of the sound and editing. One of the best features on the net. Congrats to everybody involved in this. Thanks a lot.
PLEASE. JUST PLEASE, KEEP THESE JAMS GOING. PLEASE. And this is THE best VFJAMS ever. I was in tears.
Have to say my eyes wettened in disbelief.
Another reason to see why Steve Smith is a great master of contemporary drums! The band is espectacular as always. Thanks and congrats VFJamsLive!
this guy could play for journey hes so good
He's no journeyman drummer that's 4 sure
I love the shot of Sput grooving along
watching the communication between these high level players just blows me away. Inspiring!
Steve Smith has perfect technique. What a legend.
I started sweating before Steve's solo because I knew it would be his usual mind blowing combination of chops, finesse, power, personality and musicality. Mr. Smith never disappoints and this is my new favorite channel EVER! Great production Everyone!
His sound still intact... SO STEVE SMITH!!!
I can’t like this enough! Holy crap!!! Steve Smith makes me either burn my kit and never look back OR lock myself in a soundproof room and practice for about 5 years straight. Unreal...
That's hilarious. Are you out yet? 😢

I keep replaying the melody at 1:55 ....
This is amazing

I want a VFJams album!
Gawwwllleeee that sounded so good. This is the first of the VF Live that I went back to watch again. I’ll be back.
Steve S. ON FIRE!!!!!........Smokin', wonderful, great, awesome "the" STEVE SMITH!!!.....Thank You!

Watching Steve Smith play the drums is just a delight. He plays so effortlessly and smooth with minimal force. But the drums just sing.
I swear to god this is like the 30th time I’ve watched this at it still somehow almost moved me to tears
Steve is incredible and so relaxed . WOW .HE MAKES ODD TIME FEEL SO GOOD YOU CANDAM E TO IT .🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿❤️❤️
His snare work is second to none!
Steve Smith is such a great player and can transition across multiple genres of music.
It’s a day late but I guess I’ll still watch it 😂😂
I love the different kit sounds in these videos, they're all sublime in their own way. Kick sound in this one is unbelievable, hits the spot perfectly

Always save the best for last. One of my favourite session this season....

Amazing drummer!! So versatile at the highest levels! A master
That was insane. So tasteful the whole time. The snare sound was also buttery smooth.
So much heart in those hands! Legend.
Unbeliveable!!!! Thx to the band!!!! Thx to Steve Smith!!!! Well done!!!! Everytime I see this video I'm speechless!!! Thx so much!!!!! Greetings from germany Christoph 👍👍👍👍👍
Omgawd.....Speechless.........!!! Bravisimo...!!!!
Didn't know I could love a simple medium high tuning on a snare so much!!!
I have been blessed to see him live several times with Journey!!!!!
But when I heard his album Vital Information, I knew he was so Very Special and one of the Very Best!!!!
Steve Smith you Rock!
Sean Wright's face tho lol
My reaction indeed to Steve Smith👏
He's in post traumatic stress disorder right there
The train like locomotion transition right near the end with double bass drum thing is bloody magnificent. Master of the art.
HUGE... Steve Smith is really INSANE! Out of this planet! A living Legend!
this one is the best of the vic firth series, at least technically . the perfection of phrasing and timing of steve smith is ridiculous. and it´s one of the most complex songs if not the most.
Props to the singers too! Added a really nice layer!!
Steve is a legend and still a monster! The room is filled with so many perfected chops, fueled by beautiful energy.
