    All time fav whiskey. Super smooth on ice. Makes me feel relaxed. A lot of other alcohol makes me wanna fight or act a fool. This is the only alcohol that makes me wanna just lay down and relax like i just smoked a joint but better. I buy Hibiki every other month. $110 a bottle depending on where you buy from.

    I share my bottle of Hibiki Harmony any time a friend wants to try japanese whiskey. From Hibiki there's a lot of directions to go. But if they don't like Hibiki, it's tough to find anything else from Japan they like.

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  Год назад +5

      Due to the slight peat note in Hibiki I have had some people be turned off by it. But they do like Yamazaki 12 and the Single Malt Miyagikyo. It's funny what some people like and dislike based on the peat level found in the whisky. No matter what...they always like being able to try new things. Thanks Anthony. Cheers!

    First tried Hibiki 12 yr. (predecessor to Harmony) in 2011. Fortunately still have a couple of bottles in my possession. It was and is an outstanding whiskey. My understanding is a great deal of their inventory at the time was wiped out as a result of the Fukushima related tsunami. My guess is that plus increased popularity of Japanese whiskey led to the introduction of Harmony.

      Update: Hibiki Harmony didn`t really go well with mild goat cheese or a medium strong cheese for me. But might be that I smoked a mild cigar beforehand. Made the cheese a bit "sulfur" (bad cheese) aftertaste.

      For some reason I think Hibiki would compliment fruits, nuts, and seafood. I've had quite a few meat and cheese boards and for some reason it doesn't do well. Meat and cheese might be too harsh for the delicateness of the Hibiki. Or the meat and cheese that I'm pairing with it is too harsh.

    I'd consider myself a total beginner to whisky. My only previous experience was with some Johnnie Walker Red Label a long time ago. Really put me off to be honest. Harsh on the alcohol, strong, bold flavours, etc. Recently discovered you can get whisky from other countries than just Scotland (like I said, total beginner). Japanese whisky instantly sounded like something I might like. Generally delicate, nuanced, not harsh on the alcohol, smooth, fresh... Decided I wanted to buy a bottle and figured I might as well invest in something of good or at least above-average quality to give myself the best chance of liking it. After watching your video, Hibiki it was. I've been really enjoying it so far, especially sipping it while watching this video and comparing what I smell and taste to what you're describing. It honestly gives great insights into how beautifully complex whisky can be and it excites me to try different whisky in the future. I sip it neat with very little air in my mouth, personally I find that helps bring out the flavours and it makes the alcohol part of it warm rather than burning. Absolutely delicious. Cheers from the Netherlands!

    Hibiki always makes me laugh. In common with Lagavulin 16, you have a very low proof, chill filtered, E150 coloured whisky which works very nicely. In addition it's a no age statement blend of indeterminate origin. When I drink it I like it, but I don't find myself reaching for it. Unlike Lagavulin 16!

      @whiskeyisajourney  Год назад +1

    • @alexcalhoun1382
      @alexcalhoun1382 10 месяцев назад

      How does Lagavulin compare to this in any way? Half the whisky in the world is 43% ABV, as well as being chill filtered and colored. That’s like saying I’m not feeling an apple today, so let me grab an orange instead. There’s like zero similarities between those two bottles. Lol

    • @petevj
      @petevj 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@alexcalhoun1382 correct, you restated the similarities - 43%, chill filtered, coloured whiskies that I enjoy despite common wisdom suggesting that I should not. Again, correct, there are many others, some of which I enjoy and some of which I don't. And your analogy is similarly correct, to make it literal - I like a peaty, fruity whisky but sometimes reach for a light floral one.

I did get the sense of delicateness and it was, a very very refined malty taste. One thing I found with a lot of these really good Japanese whiskeys is that the finish is very abrupt. I can only tell you how I started my collection. I'm not sure if the way I started was "normal". My brother in law and I decided to start drinking whisk(e)y while we were on a Keto diet. I bought 4 bottles to try out on January 14th of 2022. Monkey Shoulder, Four Roses single Barrell, a random Japanese whiskey, and an Irish whiskey Glendalough. From there, there was no looking back for me/us. I bought anywhere from 5 to 20 bottles a month from that point on. However, over the past 2 months I have stopped buying that many. Now If something piques my interest I'll pick it up, but a lot of times I'm passing on bottles more than buying these days.

      I know. Before I shot the video I was saying it correct, but when I started to shot it all went wrong with pronouncing it. Not sure why. It just came out that way. I was wincing as I was editing. Mistakes happen. Cheers!

      @@whiskeyisajourney Actually I am quite surprised about the price. We in Norway have a huge tax on spirits. And its a state owned "monopoly" But I only had to pay $30 more for the bottle. usually it's almost the double of the US marked.

Its a 130 USD in my country and i had it for free. Havent tried it yet. First i wanted to find out if it was worth drinking or better selling but you are convincing me to open it lol
