What do you think of the moves that were removed? Should any of them have been brought into Sword and Shield?!
Flags for which moves are affected by snatch are still in the game as far as I’m aware, so it’s weird that it isn’t in anymore
WolfeyVGC every time a better intro
*Why was Heal Order removed?* Vespiquen is in the game, but it doesn't get Heal Order and it lost Roost. Why did they do the queen bee so dirty?!?
I think heal order should have made it into the game, like you just can't remove a signature move from a pokemon and then decide to put said pokemon in game
@@Puddinhhg To be fair, it's not like she had one interesting signature move and they took it away. She still has two and the one she lost was pretty much just Recover.
It's funny to me that heal order is the move that made you point out "some of these are probably gone because their only users aren't in the game" when Vespiquen IS in the game :p Rip Vespiquen, maybe you'll be a threat someday.
im 99% sure they were like "well it already has roost and we don't feel like making this animation for only one pokemon so heck it"
honestly heal order got removed because roost is also usable by vespiquen and its just better XD
The problem is it doesn’t get roost without transfer anymore. It just can’t heal.
T0PAZ different typing tho
@@Berttheturt314 they use the same animations from previous games on other moves, why not this one?
Return giving a 100+ BP move to normal types doesn't seem that unbalanced to me, considering it would never be super effective, that is.... until abilities like Pixilate appeared
Curse you sylveon!!!!!!
@@caritahearts2405 This may sound like a stupid question, but does return friendship boost / frustration hate work online? like if i do online match is base power 102 when online?
Yes, the friendship boost works the same online
This is not anywhere near op
Return isn't the reason Pixilate is busted. Hyper Voice is.
I'm still sad that pursuit is gone, such an interesting move to play with honestly.
Not sad that toxic is no longer learnable by every Pokemon though.
I am sad. Made things interesting for playthroughs....
I’m really sad about not having Toxic, it was one of the few way singles players could combat stall. Of course, singles still allows transfer moves, but if they didn’t, stall would engulf the entire metagame.
Is Toxic not in the game anymore? Or do you mean only certain pokemon can learn it now? If it's the first, I'm bummed. If it's the second, I think that's actually good.
Toxic can only be throwing your poop at them. All Pokémon poop except for ditto and magikarp
@@neffariouspanda Transfer only move like some Knock Off users

Hidden power - I broke the game.

after lando t gets added:
why hidden power needs to be added to the game
Yeah...well I'd still prefer Lando to simply not be added to the games. Like, I'd rather not break my leg in the first place then breaking my leg and then putting a band aid on top and hope it heals on it's own - considering I had the choice and not breaking my leg at all was an option.
@@LucRio448 too bad that they want to ruin the best season of competitive
Add1Minus1 What’s worse is Lando will be able to dynamax and max airstream for speed boosts, max quake for special defense boost, etc. They really should have made all legendaries unable to dynamax, not just the Galar legendaries. But maybe legendaries won’t be allowed for VGC this generation or something.
What they should do is add a ice version of mystical fire that a lot of Pokémon can get. Mostly for type coverage, but base power is weaker, like 65.
@@rusty8311 I agree with this. Hopefully they think about it when making the new move tutors
Broke: They removed this move for balance/distribution reasons
Woke: They removed this move so they didn't have to animate it, and figured nobody would complain

@@warriorcatsofmysteryclan2240 probably was both
@@riolufistofmight yeah and lets be real it's not like they dont have the production capacity to not be this lazy. SW/SH was an utter dissapointment as a long time pokemon fan. Always going to have a spot in my heart because of my childhood but the amount of laziness they've taken the last little bit was mostly unexcuseable for me. I'd rather there be less new pokemon in newer generations than for them to start chipping away at the game we remembered.
I'd rather have had them not introduce dynamxing instead.
Honestly. People can say what they will about Mega Evolution and Z-Moves being terrible for game balance too (can't speak on that, I'm not a competitive player), but introducing a mechanic where a pokemon's balance can hinge on whether or not they get so much as a single move of a particular type, to the point where Gamefreak has to straight up purge a bunch of moves for balance's sake? In my eyes, that will _always_ be the bigger mistake, cool aesthetic of pokemon kaiju battles be damned.
@@esbernhawkins5912 exactly

Seeing the thumbnail and thinking "wait, why Bide?"
Dark void is technically speaking is in the game. It's just that the Pokemon that use it, is not. A matter fact a lot of legendaries Pokemon signature moves are still in the game. As for wolfey I won't get my hope up too high, game freak kinda hint when the dlcs was announced that some of these moves may be put back into the game, and I'm almost certain if it's true, that hidden power most likely would be one of those moves. As for Me first and assist, they would work exactly like copycat, in which they would only copy the original moves and NOT the max moves. At least with copycat you can do prankster trick room, which is a sure way of setting trick room. Y'all know game freak can patch moves to work differently on the fly, they simply add certain clause for certain moves so that they wouldn't be op. And oh, mud bomb can still be used in game, through an interesting method....

@@aprinnyonbreak1290 Ah yes, I really hated it when Mega Kangaskhan set Reflect twice in one turn, too OP. 🙃
I think Hidden Power was a good addition in the early Gens of its inception (2 and 3), because move pools could be so lacking that some Mons almost relied on it for even STAB coverage, such as Salamence with HP Flying, and there are much more depressing examples than that. Gen 4 introduced so many good moves and expanded so many move pools that it became unnecessary and the headache you described here, also with the PSS in Gen 4 and HP only being special it was pretty unbalanced with the benefit it gave special attackers, especially pre Gen 6 with 70 power.
You say that but so many Pokemon still have incredibly shallow move pools. Now, they're hosed for coverage.
Yeah HP is about the only move I can justify being removed from the list tbh. Even including signature or less used professionally moves. They could of DRASTICALLY removed the list of pokemon that learnt HP and been done with it. Having it available on Unown only or Unown + some niche pokemon for thematic purposes would've been fine and kept diversity in the game but they really streamlined the competitive meta which not everyone played for.
I think the reason it was removed was because it encouraged cheating.
@@Rioluman10 Delphox comes to mind. Good stats and typing with one of the worst move-pools for coverage, on ANY special attacker. HP grass was their best coverage option with Psychic/Psyshock and Flamethrower.
@@Smfsableye the only difference between a mon that you cheated to have a certain HP type and one you caught legitimately is quite literally only just the amount of time wasted on the activity. Yes some people like grinding for the perfect pokemon, which is fine, we all start off playing video games as a time waster in the first place, but ill never understand the logic of people who think just editing a mon to give it a egg move or HP/Nature that it can already get regardless as actually being an issue. All pokemon used in official tournaments need everything down to their natures and ev spreads turned in, so you cant cheat to make a weak mon strong anyways, its just a odd mindset people have where they think youre a lesser person if you didnt spend full days of your short life on grinding to construct a team in a childrens jrpg (and then have to do it again every time you want to make any change at all to whos on that team)
"Feint attack not a good move" Umbreon has left the chat.

@@MrGhosta5 ya but special attackers with lower defence is still a thing.
@@SirStanleytheStumbler But you still wouldn't run Feint Attack on Umbreon, 1) because it's not an attacker and 2) because Payback would be just better 99% of the time.
Umbreon usually runs Payback or Foul Play so it doesn't need Feint Attack
Wait a minute..
So if Hidden power is gone in Gen 8..
That means if you got an Unown into the game... they would literally be unable to do anything at all
@Roger Loe I thought Unown wasn't available in gen 8?
The funny thing is that, if I'm not mistaken, the data for all of these moves (minus the Z-Moves and Let's Go partner moves) are still in Sw/Sh (Notably their names, move typings, attack typings, power values, accuracy values, and pp values), as we can see them by transferring 'mons with said moves into the game via Pokemon Home. My guess is that they were either A) Copy-Pasted with the rest of the pre-existing move files and simply weren't removed, or B) That they were all originally going to be in the game, but were left unfinished (whether it be do to time constraints, laziness, etc), given the same generic flavour text, and made unlearnable/unusable.
they dont fully remove the code for moves between games because it would break the game when the pokemon are transferred. The obvious solution is to just make it unusable on transferred pokemon and unlearnt by caught and raised pokemon, while still letting the game realize this isnt a pokemon with random modded or glitched code added in as a custom move or something like that(because there would be no difference between an egregiously hacked move and one that just is no longer allowed anymore at that point
Somehow all this stuff gets removed but stealth rock is still a thing.
Well they are going to have to add hidden power back for the generation 4 remakes because of Unown being a big part of the lore in generation 4 and hidden power is kind of the gimmick of that Pokémon so if they never have hidden power in any Pokémon game ever again they would also never be able to use Unown ever again. Also I don’t really think that game freak care about if a move is over powered or in balanced. I think that they were just lazy and decided that they could just remove some moves because nobody used them anyway. Remember that we’re talking about the same company that claimed that the reason why they removed over half the Pokémon was so we would be getting better models and animations but that didn’t happen so I don’t really think that removing these moves was any more than the developers just being lazy and not bothering to make them work with the generation 8 gimmicks!
I think another reason why Hidden Power was removed is because Sword and Shield have done a really good job of customizing your Pokemon easily. We can change our Natures at whim, we can boost (maybe in DLC also lower??) IVs, the only thing we can't change is the Hidden Power type.
You are an amazing RUclipsr, thank you for existing. I'm a fan of the pokemon games casually, but was never interested in Competive pokemon, but you opened my eyes to strategies and perceptions of the game I would have never imagined. Keep it up!
So if Gamefreak wanted to re-add unown, do you think they would make hidden power an exclusive move or just change the one move to psychic or something?
I guarantee you they didn't think that far ahead.
Kain Tugwell-Fisher do they need to?
Kain Tugwell-Fisher yeah dumbass of course they didnt think far enough. Do u think theyd care about a pokemon no one cares about and add its move to ruin the whole competitive in meta
You probably already know this, but in BDSP they just removed the hidden power TM so only unown can learn hidden power and the move works like normal.
11:00 Paul had Snatch on his Worlds Incineroar in 2018. Great wideo as always!
Thanks!
If they ever bring back unown, they’ll have to bring back that move.
Or they could give him something more interesting. the pokemon sucks
Big Jon well it was one of unown gimmick
What I’m more disappointed is the removal of return (lopunny best stab move and without her mega she lost any fighting stab to)
I genuinely hope Landorus T brings an age of terror unlike anything before due to the lack of Hidden Power, because it would be a hilarious case of irony.
I'm also glad hidden power is gone, it made for so much more work to put into breeding to get your hidden power type you needed to counter some pokemon that you could realistically just pack a dedicated counter to it if you're that worried about it ruining your team. I was a big singles player during gen 5/6, and I know lots of people would always do HP Fire or Ice to counter all the big threats, whether it be the big dragon bois, ferrothorn, or whatever. It always seemed like a cop-out to me, but I guess it sucks for the pokes that don't have a lot of coverage moves in their movepool.
a lot of the moves removed were also moves that were the signature of pokemon, bone club, clamp, chip away, Dizzy Punch, Egg Bomb, Double Slab etc all are the signature moves of pokemon that originally were not available in SWSH until after the DLC but, doing this also removes those pokemons viability. Like Wigglytuff not being able to utilize double slap
Removing Hidden Power may make the game more consistent for competitive players, but it ruins a lot of the fun for the viewers. It's always fun to see the underdog win, and sometimes that means having the perfect hidden power on the perfect poke to cheese your opponent.
Hidden Power was fine, it was what special attackers got to lift them up when compared with the multitude of powerful options physical attackers got. The problem was never hidden power, the problem is that Dynamax is stupid and should never have been put in the game
This
Hey at least the devs realized the insane potential of Max HP before launch
I found both parts of this video super interesting! I especially found the first half of going through all the removed moves and hearing why they were removed interesting, as I have never followed VGC until this game. I think another factor in why Hidden Power was removed was because of Max Raids guaranteeing a certain amount of 31 IVs, some types of Hidden Power would be impossible to get on Pokemon like Gigantamax Pokemon (for example getting a Fighting type Hidden Power requires you to have 4 even IV values which would be impossible cause at least 4 would be forced to 31 for a 5* raid), and that would be frustrating and since a lot of Game Freak's decisions seemed to support having an easier time breeding the Pokemon you want in this game, they just decided to remove Hidden Power.

Removing Feint Attack is incredibly strange as it screws up a bunch of Pokemon's level up lists. Also, it was a frequent Dark move, alongside Pursuit, on none Dark Pokemon so the removal of both has messed up some Pokemon's coverage.

In gen 6 I used an hp fire technician persian in a mono normal gym team, when someone would try to counter me with scizor they would be surprised being able to be at 360 speed with an anti steel move in with a technician boost was pretty busted
I think the existence of Lucky Chant could slightly reduce the usage of Urshifu and it's 100% critical hits.
Also "100 Base Power Move with no drawbacks is kinda over powered"... EQ goes brrrr....
I agree that hidden power always threw a wrench into game plans. The starters typing used to be explained to being somewhat like paper, scissors, rock. It's not fair if you can have scissors hide a rock behind its back. I dont know if that will make sense but it does to me.
i mean it's also not fair if you play UNO and then one guy pulls out a gun, but lando is a thing so... xD
Everyone has access to it though and let's be real most of the time you can see it coming.
If alakazam bravely switches into your ferrothorn it's either going to use hidden power or focus blast.
If latios switches into your scizor then hp fire is coming.
If volcerona sets up against heatran it must have hp ground.
Oddly enough (for context I’ve used a lot of inventory editors), the hidden power of a Pokémon are still in the game, but they can never be used in battle. It’s essentially a useless stat carried over from Gen 7
Cool video, however why does he say gimmicky like that!? Lmao
Hidden power back in gen7, when z-move became breakneck blitz, it didn't change much
I feel the reason Mimic and Copycat made it in, but Mirror Move, Snatch, and Assist didn't is because they want to avoid you copying your own moves to circumvent type matchups; likewise with Miracle Eye, Odor Sleuth, and Foresight. Hidden Power as well.
For Sonicboom, Dragon Rage, and Bide, it was so you had fewer Pokemon with set damage attacks.
Finally, scaling moves based on the opponent; ie Punishment and Wring Out, were removed, likely for consistency in damage.
Still sad about Return tho.
This video was more convincing on why Dynamax is a problem rather than HP lol
Exactly
Honestly, they shouldn't have removed any of these moves, aside from Z-moves and Let's Go moves.
Competitively I understand why these moves were removed. However, I would have preferred some of the more PvE and gimmicky moves be moved to a ban list in VGC/Online PvP instead of being removed in general. That being said I completely agree with cleaning out moves that are signature moves of pokemon that aren't going to show up, Z moves, and such.
Disagree on the signature moves myself. It really added a feel to some of the individual pokemon and instead of removing them making the move feel a bit more thematically unique "heal order for vespiquen" would've been a healthier option. I agree on the PvE/gimmicky moves though. Simply removing them from competitive play is a better option than removing them from the game. Diversity is what made pokemon so interesting and them removing/streamlining it kind of killed the vibe for me.
Maybe punishment was removed because of max moves boosting stats and maybe the fear was it would become too centralized as a counter to max move stat boosts
To me the reason Hidden Power was broken was because to get a legit 5/6IV legendary with the right hidden power was extremely difficult without hacking.
This disadvantaged non hackers when they could run hidden power ice on Tapu Koko and Landorus T
I really feel like legendary Pokemon should just always spawn with 30/31 in every IV (or just 31 now that HP is gone). The whole point is that they're rare and powerful, and many of them are implied to be unique so it doesn't make any sense for there to be some strong and some weak ones.
@@imperiallarch7610 but hey at lest there's hyper training and now nature mints
Omg. I am so stupid. I can't believe I only realized this now. Punishment depends on the OPPONENTS buffs, not your own.
So, for a backstory, I played Pixelmon on a Minecraft Server, which had a Battletower (similar to in the game) of set teams but you face them randomly. You can't use Pokemone that are anything but normal (no mythical, no legendary, no Ultra Beasts etc.). Once you reach stage 21, the enemies pick up a lot in difficulty, each having a Mega Evolution and some really serious sets. After stage 31, the enemies will use legendary Pokemon or equivalents. Of course, everyone (you and the opponent AI) is limited to 3 Pokemon only.
I wanted to attempt to beat my old record by a foolproof strategy, something that will abuse the AI and pretty much guarantee wins with the sets given. And I came across Punishment. Now, mind you, the description I read was "This attack's power increases the more the target has powered up with stat changes." and I am not a native English speaker. For me, this read as "Since I am using the attack, I am the target that is looked at, and thus stat bonuses I have will boost up the attack." Yea, kinda obvious in hindsight, but I was reading over a ton of abilities, moves and what not in a short amount of time, so I blame my brain on that one.
Either way, I put together the following team:
Blaziken with Speedboost, Protect, Substitute, Swords Dance, Baton Pass, then anyone who learns punishment with high speed and attack, Ditto with auto-transform and choice scarf.
The idea was to start off with Blaziken, either use a Swords Dance if I knew the enemy switches (the AI is smarter than the Battle Tower AI was, but it always makes the same choices), or go into Protect > Substitute. If they didn't break my substitute, I would go for Swords Dance, else I would go for another Protect > Substitute.
In other words, I usually managed to get 6 boosts at the minimum, and in a perfect scenario 12, though it was usually around 8 (1 Swords Dance).
With 8 Boosts, the move would be maxed at 200 (60+160=220, but 200 is max) and get a bonus from the +2 attack as well.
But as you might imagine, it performed horribly, because in the end it would be a 60 base power move and at best a +2 attack 60 base power move. I didn't know that, I just thought the Pokemon was magically too weak or I just overestimated the move, but man it's said knowing how much effort I put into catching and training that team just for Punishment.
I remember when this list was first released. Everyone went nuts and said this game is going to be bad and stale with so many moves removed. I was quite new to competitive pokemon so had no opinion. Now I'm happy that hidden power is gone. Breeding the right HP was hell.
I remember people were only really mad about Hidden Power, Pursuit, and Return/Frustration. Some were annoyed by signal beam getting the boot since it's a good coverage move to hit dark types on many psychic Pokemon. Those are the only moves that were common enough to really affect the competitive scene (Smogon or VGC)
Pursuit, I can take it or leave it but I'm not gonna pretend that the mons that used it didn't get a lot of use from it. My thing though is even though we do have facade, why did they take away a stab attack from normals, their best one in fact. It nerfed normal types more.
@@jdamourep like retiring hidden power for single is really awful and will for doubles when the lando king will be back with dynamax
This totally sounds to me like the same argument people complaining on pokemon showdown when their adversary isn't using the usual set of moves that their pokemon likes to run use, they're only used to seeing and fighting against the standard sets and the "Good moves" so their brain just can't process when an unconventional move is used in a gimmicky way.
I'm really hoping BDSP bring back Hidden Power, removing it was the biggest joke of Gen 8. There are even Pokemon in Gen 8 that absolutely needed Hidden Power coverage such as Thievul and Eldegoss, to name a few.
i like being able to KNOW that a mon doesn't have moves of a certain type, hidden power always made that a guessing game. at least in singles, everything ran HP Ice because Lando was such a threat

I think something you didn't mention but is very important is that the lack of hidden power promotes variety in team building. E.g. in gen 7 whatever hp fire could beat Kartana and whatever hp ice could cripple Lando. Now you have to think of something different for coverage and maybe use less of the top 30 pokemon, forcing you to make more unusual choices for beating certainly matchups
I liked Hidden Power because it can be any type. It is a great move for balancing out teams. It means that you can't count on victory based on type matchups when Pokémon are sent out. It forces you to think strategically about covering your weakness, while exploiting those of your opponent. I can agree thought that it shouldn't be a Dynamax move. Base 60 is good for this.
Was there ever a time where you could use assist to use sketch to learn an opponent's move with something that isn't Smeargle?
Hidden power didnt need to be removed.
It's a normal type attack, it should proc the normal type Max move, unless specificly ability shifted
And HOW does it hurt the meta?
If the meta is so limited that you can create a reliable counter with a single move it's the meta thats busted and needs fixing, not the move.
this video may be 1 year old but, what i think is:
i wanted HP to be in the game , because it's hard to use Magnezone without hp fire to deal with Ferrothorn / Scizor , or hp ice to deal with Lando-T , or any other HP to fill a Coverage Slot in my team.
Coming from a singles player the removal of hidden power has completely changed the game. Historically it was used to keep what would be otherwise possibly op pokemon left in check (examples would be exaggutor in gen 2, swampert in gen 3, ferrothorn in gen 5, glisgor in gen 6 and landorus-T in gen 7). Now without hidden power special attackers have been severely nerfed as they no longer can use a tech move to take out possible checks, most commonly it would be a HP fire to ko steel types like ferrotorn and skarmary. The lack of HP is one of the mean reason gen 8 has evolved into a defensive metagame. Walls like Clefable, Ferrothorn, corviknight, hippoundon and seistoad can be somewhat centralizing since they are stacked together which has lead to pokemon like Tyranitar falling out of relevance since it struggles to beat bulky teams. Of coarse its not all bad as without defense Dracovish would easily become the tiers very best pokemon as well as pokemon like zeroaroa and dragapult becoming very difficult to deal with. Plus the tier being so bulky allows for some pokemon like incineroar, seistoad and mandibuzz who were previously not even close to viable now acutally good.
things at smogon are very interesting right now. A lot players now are calling for a suspect test on clefable (the tiers absolute best pokemon), others cry foul ageist dracovish, kyruem, zeroaroa and covrknight. I can't help but relate this all back to 2 things, the removal of the moves hidden power and pursuit; without them things the game is almost unrecognizable from the past 3 generations.
Many players including some of the best have said they don't like gen 8, a few even are calling it the worst gen. Some blame gamefreak, some of them blame smogon many say both of them are at fault.
how this will develop is almost impossible to predict. We have not had a defensively dominated metagame since generation 2 and historically smogon has been very nice to defensive pokemon they were very rarely banned so rarely that some have said many at smogon have a bias towards defense.
Whatever happens it's going to be real interesting, the beginning of new generations are usually hated but gen 8 has had a negative reaction much larger then any of the previous gens. With so many moves and pokemon that were taken for granted gone now Gen 8 OU a tier that is nothing like we have ever played before.
Wait how exactly was Gliscor the issue in Gen6 when Lando-T existed? :'D
Anyhow, as soon as there is LAndo-T but no HP Ice around, Lando-T has to be banned to Ubers. Well, alternatively you could bring Galarian-Darmanitan back down but that's not gonna happen.
@@LucRio448 In gen 6 glisor is one of the very best pokemon much better then landoT and garchomp in that meta; most players consider it the 3rd or 4th best mon. It's a very sturdy wall with immunity to status + taunt making it one of the best pokemon to bring ageist bulkier teams but still able to put in work ageist everything else. Its able to even pose a sweeping threat with swords dance although those sets are rarer as its defog set is arguably the tiers best hazard remover. When a pokemon backs HP ice the main thing its targeting is glisor, but hitting other mons like lando is a nice bonus.
EDIT I forgot to mention that glisgor kept getting better after the generation ended, its been slowly crawling up the usage charts. In previous vr lists things like Mega alteria and charizard X were in S now glisgor takes their places.
Its not broken though with hidden power ice being a widely used move. It also to slow to stop everything form setting up on it.
As for landerous-T in gen 6 it was really good but not nearly as impactful as glisgor is now. In gen 7 landorus-T became better then glis with its new Z move sets.
The fighting move pool became so small it hurt. I miss the fond memories of Sky Uppercut.
Wolfey: Makes Video on Hidden Power
Viewer: I bet he rambles and talks about hidden power for not very long
Also Wolfey: *11 minutes in to a 20 minute video* So lets talk about hidden power!

It's becoming a lot less palatable combined with the clickbait
Also wolfey: points to bide in thumbnail
It's been two years, and I still have no earthly idea why Signal Beam was removed.
Move isn't good in competitive -> "It's good that it's gone."
???
"Heart Stamp and Heal Order were probably removed because the only Pokemon that can learn them are gone now"
Even though Swoobat and Vespiquen haven't been removed. And strangely enough only Heal Order was removed, Attack and Defend Order are still in the game. Even stranger, Water Shuriken and Mat Block, both moves that are only learned by Greninja, are still in the game even though the only Pokemon capable of using them isn't.
Pokemichael Throh gets Mat Block and Accelgor gets Water Shuriken through move relearner.
Browser Junior that must be new then, cuz previously they’ve only been learnable by greninja
Pokemichael Throh got Mat Block in Gen ORAS(?) and Gen 7 while Accelgor got it in ORAS
Nice wideo, Yesterday I was making a singles magnezone set and I didn't find hidden Power fire
You're expected to use Body Press instead.
I like how you almost ended up predicting Terastalization here
The perfect intro doesn't exi-
:O
I think return shouldve stayed, not because of what the move is, like its incredibly strong, but also realize, friendship mechanics were changed this generation. You actually have to put in extra work to get it to that 100 base power. Shake a ton of trees and fight off rng to get enough friendship berries, make enough curry to fill the grand canyon, all to get just a few pokemon to max friendship. In previous gen getting to 100 base power on return was easy, but not anymore, and honestly that balances the move alot, its not free anymore
İ think they tried to remove the moves that have "complicated" effects so pokemon isnt confusing and also they removed moves that have other moves that do the same thing or just a worse another move.
But that's kinda silly since Pokemon is still complicated, and some of the weaker moves were to be learnt at a low level so that you don't just crush the game with a powerful move. Not removing the moves wouldn't hurt anyone.
I understand why a lot of the inferior moves were removed but at the same time, we need low level playthrough moves. I mean we have Vine Whip, Leafage, and now Branch Poke in the game but Karate Chop? Nah fam we can’t have that. The removal of return is also weird. You could totally remove frustration that’s fine but Return? The entire game is about your Pokémon getting stronger with your love. Signal beam was also a really fun coverage move for a lot of my mons...
Also branch poke is a dumb name and you cannot change my mind.
Most of the other, weaker moves, that were removed made the singleplayer more fun and more unique.
I like to think they removed Signal Beam just to get rid of Porygon Z's type coverage because they hate me.
Hidden Power should come back, but actually become a signature move. Don't make it a TM, TR, or Move Tutor. Now they can reintroduce Unown collecting to the games. :)
EDIT: If it does end up coming back for everyone, to solve the Max Move issue just make it Max Strike as a Max move due to its listing as a Normal-type move regardless of what type the HP is "transformed" into as a regular move.
So they thought it was fine to remove Hidden Power and Snatch for "balancing reasons" but left Stealth Rock in? Yep, that's not biased against Ice types at all.
RIP Magnezone, HP Fire/Ground will not be forgotten
Commenting for algorithm assistance day 36. A wee late but here

I 100% agree. I dont think hidden power should've ever been allowed in the game. It completely dismisses a player's time and work into memorizing pokemon's potential move sets and adds another layer of randomness that no one likes.
When hidden power was first introduced it was at a time when most pokemon had very limited move pools. Some pokemon legit would not have a single STAB move had it not been the saving grace that is hidden power.
Plus the fact with Hidden Power that it only helped special attackers, so mons like Machamp or Conkuldurr couldn't really benefit from it.
They could’ve made it like Photon Geyser, where whether it’s physical or special depends on the highest attacking stat.
