An interesting theory I saw someone write on was that the stormtrooper's apparent incompetence in many parts of the original trilogy was a testament to their training. In several parts both on and off screen, we see the stormtroopers for who they're supposed to be: well trained infantrymen.
But, you can notice a decline in their competence once the homing beacon was placed on the Millennium Falcon, and even Leia herself said, "they let us go."
The stormtroopers gave chase, but apparently had orders to let the rebels escape, and so they became just competent enough to give the rebels a reason to leave, but they likely missed their shots on purpose, which actually takes a LOT of training to do right.
Same with Cloud City, Vader said he wanted them alive and planned on capturing the Falcon and crew with a tractor beam after they tried to leave. Thus they're not allowed to actually shoot them.

My biggest gripe with the mandalorian is the treatment of stormtroopers. They’re just used as comedy relief at this point.
In fairness tho, the mandalorian is a highly skilled combatants trained from the age he could walk so I guess it’s not far fetched to think he would beat the average professional soldier in combat but it’s still annoys me
i mean they were probably not able to train them as well with resources thinning, not to mention how one hit him straight in the chest and he was still completely fine
They should at least still pose a threat. It doesn't matter how good of a warrior you are, if you're swarmed with enemies, you should be right on the edge.

On the Death Star, Vader gave orders to the troopers NOT to kill them, and as for the Endor encounter the strom troopers where token by surprise and where knocked out and where most likely killed, Also SWR (Star wars Rebles, WICH IS A HORRIBLE SHOW) is considered no canon. SO Strom troopers where really good shot and where vary accurate

I feel like people also tend to ignore that stormtroopers also are an elite faction in the empire, and not just the basic infantry soldier.
The one episode where they constantly missed was A New Hope, where Skywalker et al were SUPPOSED to escape so the Death Star could track the Millennium Falcon to the hidden rebel base, as Tarkin says to Vader after they blast away. So the troopers were likely under orders to make it look good but don’t kill ‘em! Actually a much more difficult task than just recapturing or killing them.
I agree on that front, but there was also the Battle of Endor.

Here's a little something with which to break the minds of people who believe Stormtroopers are incompetent...
Stormtrooper accuracy is actually portrayed very realistically in the original trilogy. In most confrontations, particularly when concern over civilian casualties is non-existent for any reason, the side that generates the highest volume of fire will win. In actual military confrontations, only a small fraction of shots fired will hit their mark.
In every original trilogy confrontation save one, the Stormtroopers are very realistically portrayed when the factors surrounding each confrontation are taken into account. This includes their loss to the Ewoks in Jedi - many times in history a technology superior force has been soundly defeated by enemies that had the advantage of camouflage and the element of surprise - particularly when the ones with those advantages will pick up and use the better weapons fallen enemies drop(as we see the Ewoks do) to minimize their deficiencies.
The only time in the original trilogy that a Stormtrooper confrontation is not realistic shown is in Empire Strikes Back, when Lando and company are trying to escape Bespin - specifically, when they're stuck at the door trying to access Falcon. Prior to that, they were moving targets(difficult for even the most trained marksmen to hit), but once at the door, there's no cover or choke point(like in the cell block confrontation on the Death Start) to shield the heroes, and the troopers were not under orders to let them escape(as when the heroes were escaping the Death Star). This is the ONE time the Stormtroopers absolutely without any question should have come out on top, but failed.
I find it quite sad that Rebels canonized the idea that they just suck. Woulda been a better idea to roll with it and find a way to show how realistic the original portrayals actually were.
Yeah Rebels... has gotten a lot wrong when it comes to Empire to say the least. They're not even threatening anymore on that show.

To add on to the ewoks, think of it this way:
You are a soldier in an unknown planet that you have never seen. Suddenly, strange creatures emerge and throw rocks. Now, the ewoks where very strong. You could not easily carry rocks that size, much less throw them with ease and accuracy. Plus, many of the soldiers who dropped down weren't dead, just knocked unconscious

The stormtroopers were professional, deadly and absolutely effective at the beginning of ANH. They absolutely wrecked the rebels in a CQB setting where they for all intents and purposes should have taken more casualties. They took the ship and killed enough rebels to get them to surrender while losing around 3 men. That's...really good.

Jokes aside compared to the rebel soldiers, the empire’s stormtroopers have a very high accuracy rate. For example, this is proved at the start of ‘A new hope’ when the empire raids the cruiser. Do you think if stormtroopers were so bad at combat when they managed to capture a cruiser by entering through we well guarded choke point? Exactly, stormtroopers > rebel infantry.

In war accuracy is subjective, mass concentration of fire is generally preferred, also someone with way too much time analyzed the opening scene of A New Hope and the stormtroopers accuracy was very high by military standards and far superior to the Rebels
In war, the accuracy of infantry is ultimately not all that relevant. Infantry are mostly there to secure and hold down positions. Only a relatively small percentage of casualties in war are due to small arms fire. Instead, most casualties in war are caused by artillery, which is what you use when you actually want to kill the enemy.

When taking ground, typical conventional doctrine calls for a combined force of Armor (tanks, IFVs, APCs, etc), close air support, and artillery. The reason why infantry can't be used to storm places like the European plains is because they can't keep up by themselves and they're just fleshy targets compared to armored vehicles. Take the Gulf War as a best recent example. The Storming of Iraqi positions during Operation Desert Storm was mostly conducted by Coalition tanks and IFVs with the support of artillery.

the theory is that Stormtroopers actually are elite troops, it' just that the force keeps necessary folks alive, hence why as soon as the blind guy pushes the button he gets obliterated, as did his friend, so long as you are necessary to keeping the force in balance, your fine, and when your use is up, well good luck.
Think this myth came from several scenes in episode 4. You had Han, Luke and Leia fighting storm troopers on the death star. Those 3 are decent shots but they are also surrounded by wall to wall stormtrooper targets in all directions on the Imperial base. The storm troopers on the other hand are trying to avoid shooting each other and damaging systems on the base. This puts them at a disadvantage. In the normal course of events Han, Luke and Leia would have been captured or killed, but they had the force on their side and of course the jedi Obi-Wan, who definitely took storm troopers seriously.

The stormtroopers were highly trained, it's just that they were just giving warning shots when the order was to capture the main characters or hinder their movement in order to capture them, going as far as losing their lives in the process. The others were shoot on sight, and so they did just that, and they did it flawlessly. As Obi Wan stated, the shots were too precise for the sand people.

Facts: 1- Stormtroopers missed the main characters on purpose (most of the time) so they could track them to their base.
2- Stormtroopers were only beaten by Ewoks because Ewoks are literally small, agile beasts that have the strength of a damn gorilla.
3- E-11 Blasters were good or were horrible, depends who you ask.
4- Stormtrooper armor was the best in the galaxy, even Darth Vader wore it. 90% of the time you see a downed Stormtrooper he is unconscious, not dead. Their armour spread the energy from the bolts. The Rebels, however...

I imagine the Ewok's spears and stones crushed and pierced the stormtroopers' armor. The armor is made for defense against blasters, not physical objects.
Chewie's bowcaster is also armor piercing if I recall. They made that clear in The Force Awakens when he shattered that one trooper's armor, but I think it's always been the case.

Stormtroopers were actually selected from best of the best in imperial academy. They are actually expert marksman,especially in CQB situation. They miss a lot is because first,stormtroopers in death star was ordered to miss so that they can track the rebel base once Han Leia Luke and Chewie made an escape to Yavin 4. Second,do you really want stormtroopers to have perfect accuracy? Do you really want the main protagonist and other heroes to be killed by unnamed imperial stormtrooper?

Regardless of what anyone "wants", the idea that an elite legion of Stormtroopers can lose a battle against a tribe of stone-age teddy bears pretty much makes them a joke as a military unit. If they were selected from the best in the Imperial academy, the Empire was doomed from the outset.

@@skywalkerorder2170 in the Han Solo mission on Takodana you end up escorting an Imperial defector who I believe is a statistician. He rambles quiet a bit but at one point, he says that Imperial high command had gotten an average of 77% accuracy with it's troops.

Another reason they might miss a lot is because if you remember in revels when Rex puts on a stormtrooper helmet and tries to fight with it he ends up throwing it off because “I can’t see anything with this thing.”

Remember, storm troopers are one of the most elite ground troops the empire has. Their actual “backbone” troop would be similar to what Han Solo was. This troopers should have absolutely squashed the rebellion, but due to plot reasons you can’t have the main characters getting slaughtered like cattle.

Has anyone (including rebels creators) thought of the fact that in 1977-83 it was a lot more expensive to show a laser hit someone than miss? A hit required a pyrotechnic effect that was had to be small, shoot in one direction, and look a lot more intense than it was. A miss did not require it to be totally safe to perform on a human, since they were happening on a piece of prop. Also, hits required special shirts, and burn a hole in the shirt. Not to mention the actor had to give good reaction in one try. Shooting and reshooting blaster hits with practical pyrotechnic effects was expensive and difficult. THAT, my friends, is why stormtroopers (and everyone, including sharpshooter Han Solo) miss most of their shots. I think when Obi Wan says "only stormtroopers can fire so accurately" we can assume, as the story goes, they are soldiers of high accuracy.

When you get out of high school, you will realize a paragraph can take less than a minute to write if you have coherent thought on the subject matter. Also, you clearly clicked on the same video, and took the time to comment several times on it. This "silly little movie" happens to be a multi billion dollar earner that is one of the most influential story franchises in this age in history. If you think you can bypass that fact with a few condescending comments and lame emojis, think again pal.

The only time they're ever portrayed as being inaccurate (I.E. the one thing everyone gives them shit for) is on the Death Star in A New Hope, and that time, they weren't trying to kill their targets, they wanted them to escape. They placed that tracking beacon on the Falcon, that'd be useless if the gang was laying dead on the ground riddled with blaster fire.
So, what was the beacon for? Well, my hypothetical friend, I'll tell you. The beacon was to lead them to the rebel base, something they didn't know the location of and were just dying to blow up. Remember why they captured Leia in the first place? They were interrogating her to find out where the base was. She fed them a lie, they knew she lied, and blew up her entire planet as she watched. They were also going to execute her anyways, since she wouldn't talk. This prison break gave them an opportunity to use Leia to help them find the base again.
So, why did that require inaccuracy? Simple: dead rebels don't fly away and lead you to the rebel base. They had to herd them down the halls somehow, and how convenient it was that the one path they weren't blocking off was the one that led straight to the Falcon, wasn't it? It was an obvious move, and they played right into the Empire's hand. What else could they do, as well? Die to the Stormtroopers? Get thrown in the prison block? It was a rather genius move.
The tactical cunning of the Empire is shown in many instances. Such as that time when Han charged at a group of Stormtroopers, only to be met with a larger group of Stormtroopers, who forced him to charge back in the other direction. That's a simplified version of an actual battlefield strategy employed by the Germans in World War 1 during the Meuse-Argonne, called Defence in Depth tactics. In it, you don't seek to prevent the advance of an attacker, but delay it by placing deliberately small and weak forces far ahead of your main forces, who are larger and stronger. The smaller force is meant to cause additional casualties ahead of time, and lure your opponent into the trap. They're essentially live bait, albeit bait that fights back and whittles down the enemy a bit, as well as making them cocky and overconfident, so your main forces can beat the shit out of them. It certainly made the Meuse-Argonne hell on earth for the American army. The Meuse-Argonne is still the bloodiest battle in US history almost 100 years later. That's Defence in Depth tactics, the ones the "incompetent" Stormtroopers modified on the Death Star.
They were using a tactic of deliberately missing to make their targets run away and take the bait: a ship they did seemingly nothing to. If they really didn't want them to escape, why not scrap the Falcon? Why not disable the engines, or rig the ship to explode the second they try to take off?
It's simple. They wanted them to leave. And their strategy would have worked, too, had it not been for Luke being Force-sensitive and blowing the reactor.
Redeye The only reason the Death Star was destroyed was because Luke was force sensitive and learned he was force sensitive conveniently before the Death Star arrived. Had Luke chosen not join the rebellion or not discover he was a Jedi, the rebellion would have been crushed.

The Meuse-Argonne Offensive killed 26,277 American soldiers. Moving on to the number of wounded, the combined Union and Confederate soldiers wounded at Gettysburg were 27,224. The Meuse-Argonne Offensive saw 95,786 Americans wounded.
So, combining the wounded and dead to get the total number of casualties, we get 46,286 casualties for the Battle of Gettysburg and 122,063 American casualties for the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (I make the distinction of American soldiers for the Argonne because the French Army also fought there, although it was mainly an American battle, with the French having far fewer numbers than the Americans. Just so nobody thinks I'm playing favorites).
I'm not unsympathetic for either battle, honestly. The Battle of Gettysburg killed one of my great great grandfather's 4 older brothers, with two others dying on separate occasions and the last one returning home without his leg. My great-grandfather lied about his age to join the US Army at 16 years of age in 1918, and fought in the Meuse-Argonne before being sent home. He also ate a lot of bananas to bulk up so he looked 18 (judging from my personal experience with too much bananas, I'm surprised they didn't think he had cholera afterwards. Assuming that that's genetic, of course). We don't know if he was wounded or if they found out he wasn't 18. From the casualties, I'd have to guess the former, or maybe a combination of the two, in that he may have told them his real age to be sent home rather than be sent to a field hospital. We don't know mostly because he died before my father was even born, and with my grandfather gone, I don't have anyone left alive to ask. Just to shed some perspective on the matter, I suppose.

-They are firing down a narrow corridor filled with targets
-They are firing at a target the size of a spaceship
-They are firing at another vehicle-sized target
-They accidentally fire up in the sky and hit something by chance
-They are in a deleted scene
-They are shooting unarmed villagers who don't fight back
-They are shooting at point blank range
-They are not using guns
I suppose it isn't fair to say that Stormtroopers never hit their target. This video clearly illustrates that there are situations in which even Stormtroopers can't miss.

I just realized something else contradicting about Obi-Wan's comment in A New Hope. Tusken's were able to hit moving podracers going hundreds of miles per hour, and in Book of Boba Fett, they were sniping the pikes through the windows of a fast moving train that was probably miles away. And Obi-Wan's saying stormtroopers are more precise. I know he said it before all of that other stuff came out but it's still kinda funny

Damon Richter In episode 4/ the original star wars, they were under specific orders not to kill the rebels on the death star so they could track them back to the rebel base- though Vader killed Obi-Wan, it should be fairly obvious why (not to mention that it doesn't exactly prevent the rebels from escaping and, thus, doesn't stop their plan).
In every occassion after this, the Stormtroopers actually were shooting to kill or capture.

Well, the shot guy was in an insurgent movement barely funded by secretly rogue imperial senators, so we can't expect average Rebel soldier to have a high quality training. Besides, they were just royal guards, who would only be trained for minor situations but not actual combat

I’m quite late to this but it’s always plot armor (and the fact that stormtroopers are the baddies) that determine the “shots landed”. there will always be points where stormtroopers can be portrayed as the soldiers they should be, of course they won’t be as amazing as clones since clones were trained from birth compared to stormtroopers that range from training from childhood (imperial cadets) and some from adulthood (common conscription) - like modern earth armies - stormtroopers are just victims of story telling and jokes taken across the franchise, like red shirts in Star Trek always dying, there are points where even clones are victims of plot armor - tups kidnapping by the separatists, the clones in the transport took out the buzz droids easily, but when it came to the B2’s not one was taken down; take into account proximity, number of entrances they could possibly come out from, you’d expect at least 1 to go down but no, armor or not, that close range should’ve done damage. So even though there is only 3 minutes of official screened stormtroopers doing well, must admit there is 25(ish) years of imperial rule for some decent Stormtrooper action, that in which Disney doesn’t show since.. they’re the baddies

I don't buy the excuse that making the Stormtroopers suck at shooting was necessary to keep the protagonists alive. There are so many things the protagonists could do to prevent their own demise with out compromising the Stormtroopers. They could actually take cover for once, or use strategy to outsmart their foes. I mean they stand in the open 90% of the time in the films, and it looks ridiculous. Maybe wear armour as well, so they could justify surviving a few shots?
A movie does not have to make the enemy utterly incompetent in order to keep the protagonists alive. I mean look at real life... I don't think Simo Hayha managed to kill 500 Soviet troops by himself, because his enemies were a bunch of morons. No, it was because he knew what he was doing. The reason Stormtroopers are shit shots, is because of the limited resources from the studio. To make the "Stormtroopers vs Rebels" conflict more believable, it requires better acting from the extras, professional fighting choreography, knowledge of military equipment and tactics, etc. This kind of stuff can get expensive, and the filmmakers probably do not want to bother with it.

To be fair, First Order stormtroopers we're basically like clones in that they were trained from birth, that's why fin doesn't know his real name, because he was abducted as a child and only went by his number, FN-2167(I think, all I'm certain of is FN).
Dont forget that in the death star their intention is to miss, so the heroes escape and lead them to the Rebel base, so every close shot is also a nice hit

For all those out there who doesnt know anything about star wars the stormtroopers were ordered to miss during the death star because of orders they were given. Darth Vader said to miss but make it convincing that they were trying because Vader knew that they were going to flee to the rebel base so they tracked them. Hope this clears up everything and to apppreciate stormtroopers more.
