    in my opinion the tarkin doctrine has always had one HUGE glaring flaw. people who fear you will grow to hate you, and the longer that fear goes on the more they will hate you. that hate will cause unrest and eventually rebellion. so in my opinion the entire idea is ultimately self defeating.

    • @thewisefives2951
      @thewisefives2951 3 года назад +101

      Agreed. Eventually hatred and rage overcomes fear and people fight back, regardless of how scared they are. Honestly, Tarkin really wasn't as smart as he thought he was. I get the whole quantity vs quality arguements (although I still prefer quality most of the time over quantity.) but ripping away the Stormtroopers identities ironically probably damaged moral in the long run, especially when the Galactic Civil War heated up. Stormtroopers may be better trained than Rebels, but Rebels had way more to fight for.

    The bit about keeping their armour clean despite the tactical disadventage actualy reminds me of a Quote from 40K that fit pretty well to the train of thought:
    "The uniforms of the Imperial Guard are camouflaged in order to protect their wearers by hiding them from sight.
    The principle is that what the enemy cannot see he cannot kill. This is not the way of the Adeptus Astartes. A Space Marine’s armour is bright with heraldry that proclaims his devotion to his Chapter and the beloved Emperor of Mankind. Our principle is that what the enemy can see, he will soon learn to fear…" -Chaplain Aston, of the Fire Hawks 10th Company

    • @BenMan8881
      @BenMan8881 3 года назад +3

      to be fair... when you've got such a small cast of characters, you can't have them be major threats. After all, if they are to be major threats that could hit a fly on the opposite side of a canyon every time the characters encountered one, then the small cast isn't going to last very long. Rebels have the 6 main characters that are in in Imperial territory. They would definitely encounter enough stormtroopers that, if they were deadly accurate, the show would last for less than a season. Mandalorian is in a similar situation. There is basically 5 core characters, with only Mando and Grogu truly being mainstays with the others appearing at various points. If stormtroopers were made to be as much of threat as most people want them to be, the show wouldn't have lasted long enough for 2 season.

    • @shmeg8695
      @shmeg8695 3 года назад +3

      @@BenMan8881 I mean the OT had a small cast of characters and handled them perfectly. In the first film they are depicted very competently at the beginning (Tantive IV) and only begin missing shots on the Death Star after being ordered to let the rebels escape as Tarkington wanted to locate the rebel base by racking the falcon. Empire Strikes back does the same, Empire has a strong start on Hoth which did include ground forces (off screen) and ended with the troopers failing to stop the rebels from escaping cloud city. Vader also mentioned before though that the rebels were not to leave the city meaning it’s possible he wanted them alive. There were also only about 3 stormtrooper casualties during the cloud city escape as they were using cover while chasing the rebels unlike in mando where they just run out in the open and often don’t even shoot. Episode 6 may be one of the worst depictions but Endor was full of human eating natives giving them quite the advantage over imperial forces. The few biker scouts at the beginning of the Endor sequence even proved to be a bit of a problem for Luke Skywalker despite being ragdolled by a droid in mando. I’d also like to point out also that there are alternatives to storm troopers as seen by either navy or army troopers. Storm troopers are literally sent to reinforce the navy troopers on the Death Star after they were quickly overwhelmed by Han, Luke, and Chewie. The Stormtroopers quickly overwhelm the rebels making them go down the trash shoot. Even Solo, a Disney film had the audacity to show that army troopers are still a thing and continue to represent stormtroopers as incompetent. Shame as we may be getting Thrawn in post Endor cannon again, hopefully we see some competence from his forces.

There was a dark lord way back in the Old Republic days that just wouldn't die no matter how many times you chop them up or shot him. I believe the Jedi that finally killed him had to get them to let go. And if you know anything about Darth Maul you know he really really really hates Kenobi.

    These reasons is why the Stormtroopers were actually the "elite" forces. The regular conscripted forces are the Imperial Army (as seen in Solo) and had much lower standards and not as strict regulations. In Solo we see an officer refer to him by name not by number. So the Imperial Army is the lower quality soldiers while the Stormtroopers were much more trained and indoctrinated.

That is -- when people feel they are anonymous online, they feel more empowered to harass others or say/do controversial things that might otherwise get them backlash or a lasting reputation hit if people knew who they were. Would donning armor that basically makes you the same as a million other people do the same? Thereby enabling some of the worst of the abuses Stormtroopers might have heaped on others.

Gonna get a wee bit political here but if you look up some of the ways Cops in America are trained (specifically things like "Warrior Training", and "Sheep/Wolf/Sheepdog" mentality) it's more about giving someone power over people with very few consequences for abuse of that power, while also instructing them that they inherently know better than most people.

    • @amyb.6368

      @@kamalalsb7292 Mm, that theory sounds too much like the "power is everything" mentality to me, which doesn't take into account the many complexities of the human psyche or the job. There are subjects cops do know better than most people, like how to drive a car, grapple, or the complexities of the law. (And there are, of course, places they most certainly don't!) They are enforcers of the law, so they of course have some power over people, but they also cede power to their sheriffs, the courts, and the law-makers as a regular part of their job. They also cede power to their conscience, if they're good ones. So, no, I disagree.

      @tristankawatsuma8962 3 года назад +2

      The state of emergency was only extended after the Clone Wars to hunt down the Jedi. It should have ended years before the creation of the Rebel Alliance. And no, rebel cells would not be justification for a galaxy-wide state of emergency. Perhaps local ones, but the Empire would have no legal justification in maintaining Imperial garrisons and arresting anybody who disagreed with the Empire in territories with no rebel activity until the rebel cells became a rebel alliance. Not to mention the destruction of Alderaan just sends the wrong message to people. Destroying an entire planet with millions of civilians that was a well-known member of the former Imperial Senate? If Alderaan is supplying the rebels with ships and weapons, use the law for crying out loud. The destruction of Alderaan just ended up having the opposite effect of fear. As tragic as the large loss of life on the Death Star is, the rebels could at least say that they were attacking a legitimate military target that had begun a battle with them. Need I remind you that the Death Star was tested on a city full of innocent inhabitants? The galaxy does need order, unity, and a central government with a federal military, but that is not the Galactic Empire. Whole species were enslaved and some were even wiped out. The Geonosians are nearly extinct while the Kaminoans and clone troopers are now homeless. Punishing the many for the actions of the few makes no sense whatsoever. Of course just because of the things that made the Empire legal, the Rebel Alliance thought that the New Republic needed to be the opposite of this by having a military too small to keep the galaxy safe while making the senate as bureaucratic as the Old Republic senate. Sure the Empire was evil and all that, but if Mon Mothma wanted to avoid the issue of the Clone Wars again, she should have remembered that Palpatine took power with an army because the Republic did not have one. Thanks to the pacifists and the Anti-Imperials, they wasted all of the deaths in the Galactic Civil War. Why is it so hard to make a government with qualities from both the Republic and the Empire? How hard can that be!?

      You´re comparing an army solely designed to strike fear into their own civilians and supress rebellions, to an army trained and equiped to kill every enemy in the most effectiv way possible on a battlefield.

    I read somewhere that storm troopers were based off the Nazi secret police. This further drives that home. Dehumanization of soldiers was the exact thing the Nazi regime was going for with their army. Same desired effect too.

      That's actually wrong, German officers and regular soldiers were very independent and officers were encouraged to get to know their men by talking to them about themselves and so on. Not sure where you got that from dude

      @@duckygaming3536 Yeah, it's sad to see people project assumptions onto history because of the pop-cultural tropes based upon said history. No offense to Zezous here but the German military was nothing like what you see in hollywood or video games. It's understandable though, they're media's favorite "villains" so of course people will project all their personal ideas and expectations of evil onto what basically amounted to ordinary men risking their lives for their families & Nation. Not some soulless mob of frenzied beasts.

      It wasn't just Allied propaganda, it was Germany's propaganda. The goose stepping and snappy uniforms were parts of a carefully crafted image. Of course the German soldier wasn't constantly on parade. He drank, smoked, told jokes, sang songs, complained, and wrote letters home as soldiers have done for generations before and after. Dehumanization is for the enemy, not your buddies and beloved country.
