Great to watch the care and attention you put into this kit. It also came across that you were thoroughly enjoying building it. Excellent work. Cheers, Bob
Hi Bob, I had good fun building it, it was a challenge but a rewarding one. Cheers
Looks great Dave,
Looking forward to seeing it in place on the Layout,
Nice little night time clip at the end 👍
Mick Sanger Hi Nick, thanks. I do love some night running. :-)
Looks fantastic, can’t wait to see it in position on the layout👍
Dartwear - Formally Station with no name me too.. hopefully in the next few weeks :-) Dave
Absolutely brilliant Dave 👍🏻
Certainly a very nice addition, an extremely realistic piece of kit ..great work
Ewood Railway Thanks, yeah it is a really realistic looking kit :-) cheers. Dave
A very detailed build and look at the kit Dave, very easy to follow for any novice with some great tips, great work, and it does look awesome.
Hi, while its not a quick easy build (if you want to do it properly) it is easy enough to follow and piece together. Time taken in planning and careful handling of parts is key! Its great to hear you think it looks awesome....I am really satified with this build ;-) Dave
Awesome Dave!! Just awesome! A stunning job!! Cheers Onno.
Onno Mulder thanks. Great kit, enjoyable build. :-)
That came out really nicely!
It's great to see something new and different from prebuilt and painted resin buildings, or several Peco/Hornby sheds pushed together to make a bigger depot.
As you have the bachmann building, you can use that for basic A and B exam servicing (Oil, fuel, coolant, etc) and this new building for the more substancial work.
One thing to bear in mind... neither would be able to lift out loco engines, but with some mobile jacks you can lift locos to do bogie replacements or traction motor changes.
Something else that could be done is to have a stores coach at the end of a siding, and an open wagon for throwing in used brake blocks.
Things like traction motors, or DMU engines would be found on pallets and come from the 'Railstores' centre at Doncaster works.
Obviously you'd need a forklift to lift heavy objects like this.
I do have one curiousity about something you did in this build.
Depot buildings are smokey, grimey and oily places... so I've always found it impossibly to tell the difference between 'frosted' windows... and 'so filthy, they might as well be frosted'!! LOL
Now you have the outside done... you'll need the interior details!!
I look forward to seeing how your depot develops from here on in!
Great video Dave it is coming along nicely
Cheers, I really enjoyed the build! Dave
Looking good that shed. Like the night time running at the end
diesel 13 13 Thanks the shirt does look good. I like night running shorts as well especially at the station
Indeed a nice looking shed ! Good to see a few more of these about rather than the bachmann Peterborough one !
Absolutely stunning Dave, and as always, in your capable hands it has become something very special, which will look amazing on your layout...Regards...Bob
Robert Masterman Cheers Bob, I really hope it is a focal point for the depot. Thanks. Dave
Looks fantastic.
Hi Dave. That is a great kit and good information on how to build it. Also I like the kit bashing extras you did it just that bit extra to what is already a great looking kit, it will fit in just great on your layout. Regards George.....
George Wyatt hi George, yeah great kit and I’m glad I added the extra details :-) thanks for getting in touch to let me now you found the video enjoyable. Cheers. Dave
Great kit building tips again Dave. If people take their time like you did it shows how well everything goes together. By chance I just filmed passing Neville Hill depot and checking on there it has no guttering either Lots of detail can be seen outside the buildings as well Air tanks waste bins signs ect. Ride the Rails Past Neville Hill
cedarcam thsnks, I’ll have a look :-) Dave
A great build series Dave. I have a similar build style/laser etched and cut engine shed still to build and this series is full of good hints and tips. Must get my finger out and get on with it! Cheers, Davie
davie maclean haha.. get on with it!! Cheers. Glad you liked. Even if there are adverts everywhere... I’m working to get rid of them :-)
Another brilliant video, that kit and she'd looks awesome.
Would love to see one or two of the panes on the side windows, where the original pane was broken and they replaced it with normal glass, a different kind of weathering, but difficult with this type of kit build.
Can't wait to see it all incorporated into the depot area. Keep up the good work
Philip Lettley hi thanks. That’s a good idea, but to remove one pane would be tricky, but I could also board a pane up! Cheers. Dave
Stunning model.
Hi dave thank you for that info it is a great help Dave ☺☺☺
Fantastic build, great videos on how good it is , Steve has gone a great job on the kit,
Hi Daniel, its godd to hear you think its a great kit, it really has impressed me. Thanks. Dave
@@DeanPark if Steve had bought these out 3 years ago I would have asked him for a couple of them instead of spending that time scratch building mine,
Well done mate! Great video as per usual David!
EtonieE hi thanks. I really enjoyed this build. Well worth a try! :-) David
Top notch, as always.
Excellent, looking well worth the build
Trent Valley Railway Yeah thanks I really enjoyed the build. Dave
Cracking build Dave, nice job...
Wheezy Palace N gauge Thanks glad you like it. I really enjoyed the build. Dave
That looks fantastic..
Hi thanks. I am really happy with it. Dave
Hi Dave well done great job
clive cobbold Thanks Clive. :-)
Fantastic diesel shed so we'll build
Awesome kit, and very informative tutorial of how best to build this kit. Some very handy tips as well. Telling people to slow down is probably the best bit of advice you can give them. Too many builds I see are very rushed and the final result shows.
Good stuff Dave.
You need a big white clock above the man door inside. lol. That's all that was missing - the depots love their big white clocks. :D Great kit and damn nice job done!
Rolica Thanks, is that so the workers know when to clock off? Cheers. Dave
@@DeanPark They just to like to have those big fancy clocks everywhere so that you can never have an excuse about being late. lol.
Hi Dave, A really superb kit. Great video, well explained........................John.
John Carvil cheers John. I’m really impressed with the kit
You can be justifiably proud of that, Dave. You took your time to get a precision finish rather than rushing it out and settling for an inferior build as a result. X
Hope Park Junction You know me by now Mike, I’m not one to rush a project just to get out on to the layout. Cheers. Dave
A proper job David, superbly built and finished, and no curled up corners on the roof either. Like the extra details you added like the vents, makes a big difference, now for the interior details and to see it in your TMD Andy
Andy Hudson yeah cheers Andy. Lots of kits to add in, shelving, loco jacks, tool cabinets and an machinery. And lighting. It’ll keep me busy for a few weeks yet.
Great video Dave the shed looks excellent bit of kit maybe talk to my other half for xmas I've just ordered the new nuclear flasks that kr models are doing but downfall there not out till 2021 cheers Paul
Brentlea Junction Paul Knowles 2021... plenty of time to buy yourself a kit! Lol. With 10% off using my code as well. It does take a bit of painting. But it’s really worth it Cheers
Dave
@@DeanPark yes it's a great kit am wanting to build my own but it wont be anything like this but with mine it will have a glass roof and really glass for the windows plus I get the glass for free due to my work lol well I'll see how it goes am sure my boss with help me bit be for 2021 am sure ill get it cheers Paul
That would do for this shed for my model diesel locomotives on my heritage railway layout and the brick shed will do for my steam engines 👍😁
You going to be adding guttering and downpipes 👍🏻
Robin Hadley not prototypical on this shed :-)
Brilliant 2 part shed building David Watson much enjoyed watching you done Steve Smith first kit a brilliant review can't believe how easy you made look and I think Steve design and Instructions there can't be a much easier kit on the market. I would just like to say thank you to both for sharing this to our hobby. It's got to be a must have if people are thinking about having a some kind of shed on there layouts.👍👍👍
Hi, thanks. It was a great kit and I am well chuffed by the outcome. It really is a must if you've got a depot that can fit it. Cheers. Dave
@@DeanPark it does look like a great kit mate I can't wait till you get it on your layout and see what it looks like I'm sure it will be absolute awesome when put in place with your tmd area 😉👍
Great video Dave.. I'm working on the 3 door Locomotive shed by Railway Laser lines... Great idea with the roof vents and side fans.
Cheers. They are great kits. Dave
@@SteveSmithRailways I said this in Part 1 of this project.
I don't remember seeing a depot without windows on both sides... and the additional benefit of having both sides glazed, is that if someone decided to take apart one layout and rebuild a new one, they aren't limited to having the building the same way around.
I also think that having an optional kit with doors at both ends will allow modellers to have something similar to Crewe Diesel, or Toton where vehicles can through the building, or have something like Tinsley used to have, with a terminating block in the middle.
Each option/version allows for flexibility and may get you extra sales!
Great job on the design work!
@@SteveSmithRailways
I have plans to do a loose version of Bristol Bath Road for my layout.
I'll make both the service shed and the main repair shed, but not the 'works' shed (I don't have quite enough room for that!).
I love the tall angled arched window sections of the Service shed.
When I make it, I plan to use lasercut and 3D printed components to make it good and precise.
The (3-road) service shed will be 920mm long by 240mm wide, open at each end.
The (6-road) main repair shed will be 820mm by 620mm wide and be closed at one end.
I also plan to have working doors using stepper motors.
Of course, I'm a long way off that!
Looks great but why does no one ever get the roof glazing correct. The water would collect at the bottom, as the bottom edge doesn't overlap the lower roof panel.
Excellent kit, and build 👍🏼 key here is definitely to take your time and build it properly. Enjoyed that.
ADM-43 hi thanks. I agree, no point in spending well over £100 to run it and bake a mess of it. Cheers. Dave
DaveClass47 Seen a video of one the other day, thrown together in 2 hours, looked horrible! Spoiled a very good looking kit.
Looks fantastic, was so close to buying one to give it a go with the temptation of your coupon code but it’s expired 😔
Hello Dave, that honor is really a two way street. Sure you get to build their inaugural kit, but they have a master craftsman build it. The kit is very nice, but I like the customization you gave it. Thanks for another great tutorial. See ya next time.
Hi Norman, cheers. I was so glad to be given the first kit. Hopefully the alterations I have suggested will help steve develop the design in to other shed kits. Cheers. Dave
Have you weathered it or done a video on it yet?? Cheers Paul happy new year
Brentlea Junction Paul Knowles hi,no not yet. That’s happening in January :-) it’ll be done sympathetically and not made to look really dirty. It’s a new structure at the time of my layout so the weathering will reflect this.
@@DeanPark oh good I'll look forward to that I've been bought a engine shed it's not 1 like yours it's a other 1 I could of asked for it but I want my hattons 66 colas rail first it's my birthday soon so I may ask then lol cheers Paul
Looks fantastic. You have some serious patience!
Eric French haha. Thanks. In some parts of my life I do, but patience in modeling is a help! :-) cheers. Dave
Hi Dave i have a Question for you Dave is there room for ohle to go through the doors of railway laser lines depot building I am looking for depot building for my elec locos?
clive cobbold hi Clive. From rail top to top of door opening, ie completely open doors Is 70mm.
The height of a panto/overhead wire will vary depending on structures/obstacles as you’ll know.
I think depending on your masts, you’ll be able to represent OHLE going into shed. Or u could like I will, have the masts stopping short of the shed and get a loco to push the electric loco into the shed. :-) hope that helps. The shed would look amazing with a 86,87,90 etc sitting outside :-) Dave
Very tidy I indeed.
Mark Franks hi Mark. Thanks. Dave
Hi dave, I'm now looking at a simulator project myself, I'm not giving to much away but I have a question. Can I ask what material you used for the grey wall, I've looked at many ideas but this is as near to what I would like. Thanks in advance
Ewood Railway grey wall? What one is that? Inside the shed?
DaveClass47 yes the inside one and the roof, thanks
Looks amazing now it's finished. Will you be adding graffiti?
Bruce Welsh not sure... weathering certainly:-)
What did you use to paint the window frames and what did you use to paint
Humbrol 27 aerosol
@@DeanPark I know it’s a big ask but could u tell me all the parts you painted in a certain colour as I’m currently making this depot myself and I thought yours looks good
What glue did you use for the white brick interior
Deluxe speed bond.
nice shed Dave how mush did the shed cost all up?
Hi, well its £140ish for shed, then add another £30 on to that for aersols and the like.... not cheap but an imprerssive structure
Looks great and can’t wait to see it on the layout, are you going to fit guttering or is that non-prototypical?
Rob Heslop hi thanks. No guttering was fitted on the prototype... but I suppose you could add them :-) cheers. Dave
Neat!
BaltimoreAndOhioRR cheers. Dave
I think the hexagon supports were used to support the roofs. So they would be mounted between the walls not along them. If you look at pictures of Springs Branch Depot as an example. The supports along the wall were usually full girders as they supported cranes etc. I haven't been able to find any real example of them mounted that way?
@@SteveSmithRailways Cool thanks. Those are much smaller than the ones at Springs Branch. Are there other examples?
@@SteveSmithRailways The ones at Toton are mounted across as supports between the walls. I have a ton of photos of Toton :)
oorail.com hi, I see Steve’s answered you question. :-) thank you both for commenting. Cheers. Dave
@@SteveSmithRailways The 'hexagon' joists are called castellated beams. One of their key advantages is that they are light and strong, hence their use as support beams (as you see at Toton and Springs Branch for example). After taking a look at Shirebrook (all corrugated metal) and Hitchin (this is a fantastic depot - glass?), these are buildings made from much lighter material, so it makes sense that they used the castellated beams as supports, as full beams would have been a lot heavier. The type of supports and joists used depends on the type of building structure. I'm not so sure that a brick built building would have had these types of supports, but it looks good, so doesn't really matter! While a lot of the depots have vanished, there are hundreds of thousands of photos on flickr, plenty of books and slides/negatives out there to do research with. The depot at Hitchin appears to be still standing. I'm just giving Dave a hard time because of his by-line of "Driven by Detail" :-P
can the shade doors open
Rishidave Singh hi these are the closed version but u can slide these out and add in open doors :-)
Impressive structure but sadly I don't have the space.
Alan Robertson cheers Alan. It is a big beast :-) Dave
Great job nice shed but to much ads
Hi Dave, what a fantastic kit put together by a master modeller, congratulations. Love the small extras you have added to the building. Question :- do the striped doors roll up ?....Really looking forward to seeing it on your layout. Cheers Greg
Hi, thanks Greg. It really is a beauty of a kit. The doors are made from 1mm mdf and while they look like they can, they dont roll up. But they are easy to change for doors that are open, they just slide out the bottom of the runners. Cheers. Dave
Hi Dave,
Superb build. I'm a Tamiya acrylic bloke but I agree the Humbrol shade of yellow you used was the right one to go for in this case. I know it's not finished yet 'cos you have the interior to do, but what about guttering and downpipes, which you didn't mention, or did I miss it?
On a different matter; when editing could you please keep the incidental music at the same level as the narration? I don't like to be deafened and I'm guessing my neighbours don't want to hear about train stuff!
Thanks, Mike
Michael Sanderson haha... I’ll try match the music to the voices :-) you never know...your neighbour might also watch my channel lol
No guttering... the prototype didn’t have it and nor does the once I’m looking at which is at Haymarket depot in the 80’s.
I tried lots of yellow, the Tamiya flat yellow was close but too clean and bright. I do like humbrol 24 yellow.
Cheers
Dave
@@DeanPark Thanks Dave, I do appreciate it when a RUclipsr replies to a comment sent in good faith - some don't. No guttering - what had BR come to?
In the late seventies I went from Newcastle to Buxton to see Echo and the Bunnymen in a train that had no heating - the Guard (yes, we had them then) was apologetic but that didn't make the train any warmer - it was a cold December. I still want the railways to be re-nationalised but I think we should go back to Grouping - am I wrong or did that actually work? I think it sort-of did until the war. The war screwed the whole thing up and the Government simply didn't have the money afterwards to make it right. I await to be shot down in flames by people who know far better. Mike - awaiting the inevitable.
Nicely built kit, maybe guttering could be added too ☺
phil pace this particular prototype didn’t have gutters. :-)
Lovely looking shed, but desperate expensive.
I have a bachmann two land loco shed, that can house 2 locos. This new one can house 4 locos. The bachmann one cost me just shy of £95. Its pretty generic and half the size of this shed. Yeah the shed isnt cheap, but it is a very well designed and detailed kit.
You have spoilt the channel with fare to many ad's
4 ad's within the first 9 mins
I too had 4 ads.
Such a shame to see you doing an advert for something else in the hobby that is vastly overpriced for what it is. I enjoy watching you making your scratch building items. But it's starting to look like the average person will not be able to produce scenery like you're as your connections are allowing you to get bespoke items made for you, something most people are not able to do. I hope your future projects are something the rest of us could achieve with out access to laser cutters and bespoke services.
prc789 hi. Thanks for taking the time to give me that feedback.
This is a product available to anyone. It was not bespoke for me.
I was kind of doing a favour for a mate who I knew before he started up this business. He asked me to build it to test it and give him feedback as it was a new release. As a result of my feedback very minor changes have been suggested and made to the standard kit so future buyers will benefit. However I hope you’ll agree it make a nice structure. :-)
I added my own little touches and details to make it my own. The wall extractor fans are available from scale model scenery.
This is sadly now an expensive hobby. With Locos costing over £160 etc. Ready made buildings and Accessories from the likes of Bachmann (as good as they are) are not far behind in price.
This is a large structure. A focal point. Most layouts only need one, therefore for me this kind of expense would have been justified.
Probably 99% of my builds have not required a laser cutter. Most being done with a craft knife and saw :-) However, it’s in my nature to always try new methods and technologies and let others know what is out there, so you can make the choice what and what not to try replicate etc.
Thanks for your comment. I always enjoy reading and appreciate all comments. I hope I’ve managed to explain the purpose behind the video.
Thanks for watching my videos. Cheers. Dave
@@DeanPark Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's appreciated. I have just spent a very enjoyable fortnight watching your videos from the beginning, after doing the same with Everard Junction. As I'm about to take the same journey after having last attempted to make a layout over 35 years ago. I have learnt a lot of very good techniques from watching your videos. And found some excellent suppliers of very reasonable priced items, but I did find this two parter start too feel like the new internet trend of showing off something in order to get more free stuff, and I am absolutely positive that that was it what you were doing. I had also just listened to a podcast from America talking about the way the younger people have been priced out of the hobby, and it but a raw nerve. I will, hopefully, spend a lot more enjoyable and educational time watching you complete and then update your layout.
