Another superb video Dave. Thanks. You mention one of my pet hates...not just white showing through scenery, but on layouts when a tunnel is used to exit the layout, you look through the tunnel and there is just baseboard!! I have always put scenery at least 12 inches (in my case N gauge) beyond the tunnel which makes good continuity, especially when filming or photographing. Cheers, Bob

Hello Dave, excellent video, picked you up from Everhard Junction, as with Richards videos so informative and excellent tutorial from start to finish , now need to look at some of your other videos, a year or so ago I purchased for £4.00 in a shop sale somewhere, think it might have been a gift type shop a mini Henry vacuum cleaner, excellent for picking up static grass with virtually no waste, small enough to get the hose where you need to, recommend it if you see one anywhere. Great video real inspiration I would like more cost saving ideas as woodland scenics are great products are rather expensive. I am a pensioner and don't have a lot of cash to spare so your money saving ideas a very helpful.

Wonderful work on the embankment David. Yeah I've been using the WS Fine Leaf Foliage too with good results and I think your rubberised horsehair with added foliage looks splendid as well. The really wonderful thing about Woodland's Fine Leaf Foliage imo is the fine branch structure, which sets it apart from the normal shrubbery/clump foliage. Thanks for showing this one! Joachim
This is a great tutorial Dave. Very clear instructions. I have got most of my embankments made and ready for adding the bushes. Today I got some spray paint and tried out your horsehair bushes. They were as you replied very easy to make and look really good so thanks again for the idea. I like you use the boxes of fine leaf foliage Combined with the horsehair bushes I hope to get something similar to what you have created. Also I was told the Scotrail Oxfords are on their way so should be getting those very soon.
Hi thanks. Yeah the bushes are very easy, but effective. The Scotrail MK3 are on the way....but I have seen a mate of mine who got his yesterday.....they colour of the lower side does not look anywhere near the Bachmann colours!! What a disappointment.
Latex protection is always a must 😂😉 Another great video I think I forgot to watch it when it was first put up I’ve been lucky to get a ton of celltex insulation for free as my neighbor is renovating his house next door so I have had all the off cuts and unused bits all for free saved a fortune 😊😊
Loving the new series Dave! Good results on this one, the embankment looks great! My plans was also to use celotex to close in my frames and build the foundations, very easy to shape and work with. Keep them coming . Tim
Hey Dave - excellent as usual - just to let you know, I've just had a stookie on my left foot/leg - they use fibreglass now. It's lighter and easier and less messy to use! Looks like plaster is relegated to railway modellers now! 😊. The fibreglass comes in packets just like woodland scenics plaster, and you dip it in water. There is some sort of reaction that gives the plaster techs about 5 minutes to mould the roll around yer leg! There is a bit of heat generated and it sets in about 10 minutes. - I just wish it was commercially available, and of course cheap, but I don't think it falls into either category! I don't know if you have seen the stuff I'm talking about, but it would do a great job on a layout like yours, and it's quick to cure! It's apparently much stronger, and as I said, much lighter in weight. Anyways, thanks again for your continued dedication to producing interesting and informative videos. I reckon my layout will be based about 70% on yours and the other 30% on Everard Junction! I just need to find the time to get my room sorted out and get going!!!! Cheers Don

Hi, you don't need a lot of the scatters to give a thin covering....it also allows you to really vary the tones. Its not essential, but really up to you. ;-) Cheers. Dave
Cheers Dave I've been watching loads of videos on scenery and there seem to be loads of different methods, I like the results you've got so will try this on some areas. I've actually used cellotex but instead of plaster bandage I've used cement and pva mixed with water to create the ground surface., as recommended in a book I've been studying. I will also probably use plaster bandage in some areas where strength is required. I think I just need to get started. Cheers
getting started is the hardest bit....this scene took me 10-12 hours of work....the building up of the layers and prepping the bushes and trees takes longer than you think. The quickest bit was shaping and platercloth!
I've gathered it's a long process to do the scenery and I've made a start, just need to clear the decks and get the bulk of the land forms in place so I can visualise what's what with regards to surface finish. My plan involves a lot of trees but I think I'm going to reduce this, it's too time consuming. I'm going make wire tree armatures mixed in with woodland scenics plastic variety. With my speed of construction I think it could take a while lol, about another 5 years! Cheers

Fantastic job! Can't help but think that there would be some kind of paint scrawl or graffiti or work men's markings somewhere on the walls though. Is this a no no in the model railway world?
And I thought plaster bandage (or before that papier maché!) over chicken wire was mucky! That Celltex stuff looks nearly as evil as the knife you use to cut it! Great result though. I did once try fibreglass over chicken-wire for a hillside that needed to be removable to allow us to pop up to deal with problems & track cleaning in an otherwise impossible to reach section: it was nasty stuff to work, and I wouldn't really recommend except in that sort of circumstance. It was much lighter and more robust than similar sections made with a skim of plaster bandage or papier maché, The overgrown siding is looking excellent. It's about time somebody made electrically conductive rust coloured paint for weathering the rails in sidings. (Yes, I'm on catch-up. Finally made it to 2019 now we're nearly at 2020. Maybe I'll be watching you "live" in 2020 some time!)
Confused by the scrambled egg comment I think this is another eggcellent video😀. Can you confirm the name of the yellow shaping tool. Had assumed you'd have used a hot wire cutter so interested to see you used a knife instead.
You should invest in a hot glue gun which has high/low heat options. It makes gluing bits of high density foam together quick and easy on the low heat setting, it won't melt the foam either. You won't need to mess around with pins/weights and waiting for glue to dry off.
@@DeanPark Your welcome. We use styrofoam (blue coloured foam) at our mrc and using a low heat glue gun makes landscaping a lot quicker. Being a mrc, meeting once a week for a few hours means you have to find ways to cut time out or otherwise the layouts will take decades to complete.

By the way, check Marklin of Sweden and his toilet paper /pva scenery - less expensive and not as messy as plaster strip. Similarly it makes more sense, economically to buy a cheap generic 5l bulk can of PVA than these " WoodSceneBrandwhatever" re-packaged overpriced PVA products. The internet is a great resource for recipes for glue based on cheap PVA. Just a wee criticism - woodland scenics stuff comes from the U.S. Can't we use locally sourced products that are better value , make less impact on fhe biosphere, and are just as good ? Luke's APS and gaming geeks to name just one, have the equivalent product at a better price, and is locally sourced. If you are sponsored by Woodland Scenics, then you obviously promote their products, but you don't make this clear. The overall look of your layout is one of the best I've seen on You Tube. The lighting particularly, is first class. Well done mate.
You may be able to save a bit of money by bulk buying dress-makers T-pins rather than Woodland Scenics "foam nails"..... they are genuinely the same thing just packaged in smaller boxes with a mark-up from WS. Also, why fiber-based foam? Why not just use non-fibre roof foam - way better for your health (especially using surforms to cut away material-so much dust!) although not as easy to find....
To be honest, I'd rather just pay a professionl diorama builder to build me a layout to my specification. I've got absolutely no skills whatsoever with building a layout, and it's testimony to the amount of materials I've wasted just trying to make something simple.

It is called a Surform. Its from Stanley....although most companies who do tools will produce one.
