  • In part 1 of a two part 'How To' video I show you how I went about building up an area using course turfs, various scatters and static grass. Part 2 will cover further building up of the scenic material.

    Excellent tutorial Dave. I find it fascinating to see the modern methods of scenic work as opposed to the things some of us did 50 years ago...Cheers, Bob

    Hi Dave
    Nice work on the scenics.
    An important thing to know for this kind of work....
    ...it's a good idea to remove any DCC locos from your layout when you're using a static grass applicator.
    The high voltage can fry DCC decoders if they're too close, especially if you get close to touching the track.
    The coils left behind.... they might be leftovers from the wire railings on the incline, but definately not the OHLE.
    OHLE wire arrives on an OHLE maintenance train, with flat wagons with three rolls of vertically mounted drums at each end of 6 coaches with flat roof's.
    The wire is unrolled as the wagons move down the track, and the crew lift it onto the masts and clip it into place.
    Once all the cable is attached, the train will creep along dragging more wire off the drum, and the crew will fix it into place... and on and on.

    Little bits, can't see from the video, but when blending the bits in like rolls of wire, pallets, sleepers etc, where's there's gaps like middle of the rolls etc, you could show they've been lying there a long time by having grass growing up through them, would be easy with the rolls of wire, not sure how you could do it with the pallets though as you super glue them down, you'd then want your PVA under the pallets, so when your doing the static grass you'd have some coming up through the gaps and overlaying them, also small bushes round them, so they look like they've been there a long time and hard to get out.
    Experienced this many a time when trying to pick up a pallet that's been there a while, you've got weeds and bushes growing round them, then they become rotten and fall apart in your hands lol. The joys of working on a farm rofl

    Great tutorial Dave. I hope your non-Scottish viewers are familiar with "skoosh"! ;-) It's such a descriptive word though. It's looking good - perhaps an abandoned rusty bike in the long stuff?! Look forward to part 2 when I get back from my holidays. Cheers.

    Great video Dave, thanks for posting a very useful tutorial on how you achieve fabulous results with scenery on your layout. I am paying very close attention to these how to videos to learn the techniques that I hope to apply to my layout when I get past the electrics. Great stuff looking forward to the next one eagerly, don't keep us hanging too long. Also I liked the full set virgin livery HST, I had not seen that before; was that a new addition to your fleet?

    are you using just a light coat of spray glue on second and 3 layers so you dont lay over the static grass?

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  7 лет назад +1

      yes....a misting. But all of the glue dries clear so if you use too much it wont show when dry.

    Excellent detail and workmanship, but somethings bug me when I watch similar videos. I am a retired rail signalling construction manager' so here's some observation's. Red aspects on straight posts would have the red at drivers eye line in relation to the height of the ballast shoulder and gantry mounted to be in the drivers eye line vertically to avoid'read thru' Second point, best practice was to site location cabinets in front of the signal so that aspect sequence testing can be done Put it behind and the technician cannot see what the signal displays while holding a meter at the relay. I see too many boxes in the wrong place......with the handrails too close to open the loc door,,,,,,,,,Final point, why do scenic cars never have there wheels pointing left or right....Absolutely no criticism your work is superb keep it up...........................I'm just the kind of person that spoils the movie by spotting the mistakes....lol

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, thanks for your observations. In model rail world I have to make comprises when I put things, rightfully or wrongly and I am not going to claim to be an expert on signalling lol. I will take your point about the cabinets on board for future positioning. I have them in front of the signals in a number of places, as and when the space was available. As for the signal positions in relation to the ballast shoulder etc....I can only buy whats on the market and what i can afford. I'd love gantry signals, but when I installed the signals I didnt have the confidence to make gantries from scratch. I now know there are kits available so you never know...one day I might be keen to have a go at some. I'm glad you enjoy my videos and thanks for taking the time to point little niggles out.

    Looking to find out how one gets the cable trunking to bend and follow various track curves please. David with your amazing attention to detail you must have solved this problem. Regards Allan

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  7 лет назад

      Hi, this is not easy!....if you use the WILLs cable trunking it is not possible, but if you use Ten Commandments cable trunking, as I do it is flexible enough to bend. Using the long pieces (it comes in two lengths) put super glue on to the base board where you want the trunking to go....then position the trunking and hold it in the shape you want....20 seconds later it should be attached. I use Deluxe materials Roket Rapid glue. But watch and not glue your fingers to the baseboard/trunking when holding it in place! Hope this helps. I paint it before adding it to the layout. Cheers. Dave

    Hi Dave, great video as usual. It'll help me when I finally start to building my layout and get to the scenery portion of the build.
    I have a different question that's off topic for this video, and it's in regards to the coaches in this video.
    As I watched the many terrific videos from the U.K. I became more and more interested in the passenger coaches and locomotives. I have four sets thus far in my slowly growing British OO Railway fleet (class 221, 390, 350 and the London Underground S Stock set), and I'm interested in the class 22, 37 & 40 locomotives, but haven't any idea what coaches to pair them with. I loved the look of the coaches you used in this video, could you list them so that I know what to buy? I have a small amount (comparatively speaking) yet growing freight rolling stock as I much prefer passenger rail service and I want to mix in more British Railway trains for added fun. Cheers!

      Hi, 27's, 37's and 40's all ran with BR MK1 Blue Grey coaches. They were very widespread and were commonly used, especially in Scotland where the 27's and 37's were common site. All 3 locos could also pull Mk2a coaches, again in blue grey livery. The 37's and 40 could run with MK2D MK2e and Mk2f air condictioned coaches, in blue grey liveries. The 37's also stayed around long enough to run the Mk2d/e/f in intercity red stripe livery. Also, depending on the era, you could also run the 37 with the MK3 sleeper coaches, they used to pull them up here in Scotland. Finally....you can run all of these locos with MK1 parcel van stock. Both in all blue livery and the blue grey livery. The 40's were also used on Post office mail trains. If you want to buy Mk1 coaches Bachmann is your best bet, but Hornby also have a new tooled version. The MK2A coaches are only produced by Bachmann. The Mk2e coaches are produced by Hornby and are good coaches, costing about £30 each. however Bachmann are launching MK2F coaches in early 2018 costing £44 each or a riduculous £75 for the DCC versions with lighiting features. I really rate the Hornby MK2E product. I will get some Bachmann MK2F's as well, but at £70ish each I wont get loads lol. I hope thats useful for you? Cheers. Dave
