2003 Western Conference Semifinals Game 5, May 13, 2003 | The game that ultimately ended the Lakers long reign at the apex of the league. What could have been a 3-2 lead heading back home to Staples after an epic comeback on the road quickly became a situation where the Lakers faced the brink of elimination after a game winning three point attempt by Robert Horry rattled in-and-out as the final seconds ticked away. Although the Lakers fell behind big early, going down by as many as 25 points, their best player wouldn't let the team go down without a fight. Kobe aimed to do everything he could on the court, scoring 36 points, pulling down 7 rebounds, and dishing out 6 assists while playing all 48 minutes. Had that three by Robert Horry gone in, I can only assume the Lakers would close the series out at home in game 6 and gone on to face the Dallas Mavericks in the conference finals. We'll never know what would have happened, but that shot may have been what separated the Lakers from an unfathomable 4th title in as many years.

Kobe was the perfect basketball player. Doesnt matter what level or age, WE ALL wanted to move like Kobe back then.
Kobe offensively is the greatest
Yes no debate
+A Maddy nah
Nah, not even close to MJ
Facts
Mike was great but he didn’t play ANYBODY in his era.
I was 10 yr old kid back then and i would never forget the in and out 3 by Horry. Every time Lakers come back they always finish the job that’s why this loss stings.
the crossover at 1:42 was fire. I think Kobe had the best handles of anybody 6'6 and over in history.
+Buster Posey SMH...umm, MAGIC. Man, you kids don't know shit
+Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot y so hostile lmao
KD has a better handle
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot no magic dribbled with one hand lol nothin magic there lol
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot He said Magic lol. Penny has better handles
Kobe is the best player ever, the way he lead a comeback like this, the difficulty of the shots he made in the clutch is unbelievable
Michael Jordan enters the chat.
Kobe has nothing on MJ. Nothing. I loved to watch him too, but he STILL has nothing on MJ. Period.
@dazdavis7896 get off my post wit that bullshit jordan trash
@@andrewliu111it really bothers Jordan fans, that somebody likes Kobe, better than Jordan, very sad of you, go watch Jordan's stuff
@@dazdavis7896thank God Kobe's Not Like Jordan, I mean go watch Jordan's stuff, you hate Kobe so much, you got to find Kobes stuff just to put Jordan name in front of him, sad Jordan fans are sad
If you want to see a player who can hit difficult shots, its none other than kobe
U forgot about curry
lol, kobe is the reason they lost this series. Here's all you need to know; In 2000 shaq led the team in field goal attempts and scoring and they won the finals. from 2001-2002 kobes field goal attempts slowly surpassed shaq but shaq still led the team in scoring; kobes field goal attempts kept getting bigger and bigger until he outshot shaq by a ridiculous amount, way way higher than the previous 2 years, until he barely surpassed shaq in scoring in 2003-2004 and they lost to the spurs and pistons; kobe was shooting a ridiculous amount of more shots than shaq but only leading the team in scoring by like a point or 2 per game; So basically kobe just kept shooting with the sole goal of being the teams leading scorer; if kobe had let the offense run though shaq like phil desined the lakers 5 peat, no question. And no, i don't buy that "shaq was out of shape crap", thats league propoganda promoted during the late 00's by stern to promote the idea that kobe was "chasing jordan", my ass. Kobe thought he was jordan, and wanted to push this idea. He wasn't. Shaq was jordan from 2000-2004. He won 3 straight finals mvps from 2000-2002, kobe won 0; he won a scoring title and a league mvp, kobe won zero. Shaq was jordan from 2000-2004 but kobe tried to be jordan from 2003-2004.
@@Enoughsenoughnomasno one's gonna read this bull shit
@@Enoughsenoughnomasyour a dummy and your lying Kobe averaged 32 shooting 44% from the field he averaged 5 or 6 points more than Shaq just like the year before when they beat the spurs during the 3rd finals win shaq just couldn’t feast like he did in the finals the spurs had the #1 defense with the best front court they made adjustments on shaq from the year before their front court was the difference that year Kobe always rose more to the occasion when they faced the spurs those are just facts
This might seem incredibly weird but im not even trying to be funny but Shaq is one of the most clutch freethrow shooters in nba history. I swear he always seems to knock em down when they count
victorlopez007 that's a fact always said that
difference of shaq and dwight
Makes them when it counts the Diesel
I think that has a lot to do with Shaqs focus. When he knows the game is on the line he’ll make his free throws.
He didn’t at one point he pissed me tf off lol
damn the one time kobe tries to be unselfish it cost us a chip. kobe had bowen in the air if he had just jumped into him it would been a foul from behind the 3 and kobe of course would've made all 3 free throws putting them up by 1. should've won that year.
sean24833 and people don’t understand why he doesn’t pass !
Naw bro, in the playoffs at the end of the game, and on the road, you don’t know if you gonna get that call. Jus gotta actually play lol
That last shot was the designed play after the timeout. The last shot was set for Horry.
man this game still stings....
The death of a dynasty. If Horry makes that shot, this game...coming back from 25 down against the Spurs, would've outscored them 33-16 in the fourth quarter...who knows what that might have done psychologically to that group. Robinson retires with only one ring and his legacy is altered. Maybe the Spurs make changes to what they did. That * for the shortened, silly 1999 season looms a little larger. But yeah, LA wins the title. Dallas simply couldn't beat them...it was a mental thing for those guys. And the FInals is a more competitive replay of 2002. It's amazing how the losses hurt more than the winning feels good. Nothing was sweeter for me than Gm 6 against Boston in 1987 and then Gm 7 against Boston in 2010. No loss hurt more than this one. Because that last 16 minutes of the game was the Lakers last stand as essentially constructed for the 3peat. They emptied the clip that night and I knew unlike the year before losing a close, tightly contested game against Sac in Gm 5...they weren't going to win Gm 6 in '03. I knew it. I didn't even watch the game. Came home from working OT at my job and saw they were down 25. Just turned the TV off. Didn't see Kobe and Fish's tears...that was a formality. This was the game to win. And ironically, the roles reversed the next year when Fisher hit the 0.4 second shot. The Spurs were DEAD in that '04 Gm 6. Just knew.
That's the beauty of sports man. But as always Go Lakers, and nice screen name btw lol.
That Robert horry shot was exactly in the same spot when the spurs played against the pistons in that 2005 nba finals luckily he made that shot
Yea this loss was a gut punch damn what a comeback it was SMH
Either way that game 6 was gonna be a blowout because of this game. Had the lakers won on an horry game winner they would have won for sure
5:50 Kobe’s Stepback tho 🔥 🔥
They would of 4peated if they had won this series smh
DFlowetry Music Too much drama and tension. The lack of harmony cost us titles in 03 and 04.
DFlowetry Music Dallas or Sacramento would have beaten us in 2003. We was out of sync
If horry hits that 3 they would have won the series
I agree... 4th peat :(
Not necessarily. If they won this game, I might have liked the Spurs in seven. The Spurs were going to stomp them in game six regardless of the outcome of game five. Clearly the Spurs were way better that year. They had a tendency to let teams back in games. The Mavs made a run at them too only to later be stomped.
Personally imo 03 was probably Kobe’s best year as far as athletic ability his first consistent 3pt season and he was huge Nd fresh off a 3 peat Nd before his biggest blunder
Nah
@@travisblair318903 def have a argument for best kob.
@@dreamchaser1419 I agree.
Kobe had so much finesse
As a Laker fan growing up this was the most difficult lose I’ve had to swallow. Lakers was getting stomped the whole game, came all the way back in dramatic Laker fashion near the end of the game, and then missed the possible game winner at the end. Even tho they lost, what an exciting game to watch as a kid back then! Then you have Marv Albert commentating, he was legendary also!
What is the other commentators name?
Definitely man I cried as a 10 year old watching this game with my grandmother she knew how much I loved Kobe
Prime Kobe Bryant
this is why kobe doesn't pass in these senerio even tho he'll miss some he'll make some too
If LeBron made that pass, and Horry missed, he'd say "Look at my stats. I need more help."
@@TheMrKobeBryant2012exactly
Everything went wrong for the Lakers in this series. Horry missed clutch shots he would have made in 2002, Fox was replaced by George, so the Laker's were weaker defensively, and most importantly, Shaq's heart wasn't in the series. Shaq was already looking to leaving the team. He wasn't his dominating self as he was in 2001 and 2002. Kobe played like a man possessed, but it wasn't enough.
horry was 0-6 that night, and 0-15 the whole series til then
Kobe in 2003 was the best player in the World
I think it has more to do with Shaq being fatigued after 3 straight deep playoff runs leading the Lakers into titles constantly getting double and triple teamed and dealing with nagging injuries. Same thing happened to Kobe during the 2011 playoffs after leading the Lakers to 3 straight finals appearances in 2008-2010 and back to back titles. 2011, Kobe was playing on fumes dealing with nagging knee and ankle injuries during the playoffs.
Shaq's heart was not in it because he was also coming off a toe surgery that kept him out early of the season. At one point, they were 11-19. So to turn it around and go 39-13 is impressive. But it definitely took it's toll on them. Their bench production was also weaker than 2002's.
Shaq wasn’t looking to leave at that point he and Kobe were getting along great actually 01-02 and 02-03 there was no drama and if Kobe wouldn’t have gotten into trouble in Colorado later that summer they probably don’t start fighting then when Kobe said that Shaq paid women off that’s when the wheels fell off the wagon. Shaq felt betrayed by Kobe and Shaq wanted a new contract and Buss didn’t want to pay him what he wanted cause Kobe was gonna be a free agent the following summer and was do anything to keep him but unfortunately this missed shot by Horry was the beginning of the end for these Lakers
Horry missing that 3 determined the series. Remember watching this like it was yesterday.
Kobe mightve been able to get the foul if he had leaned in a little but if the ref didnt call it everyone would have said hes a ballhog so I guess he made the right play
Michael lol ... they still call him a ballhog anyway so
exactly what i was thinking
Bowen played great defense on that play. Horry couldn't buy a three that year. Funny thing is, he kind of helped the Spurs in 2003 and 2005 just in different ways.
The ref wold probably not make the call so Kobe just made the right play. I can see how today’s officiating is really different.
The refs would have probably hesitated to blow the whistle at that point. Just wasn't meant to be. Big Shot Bob got a good look and it was half way in but it just rimmed out.
1:38, people dont give enough props to Kobe's crossover. When he got older he went away from it, but those first 8-10 seasons, his cross over was as good as anyone.
This guy played all 48 mins single handily brought them back, ended the 4peat
this game was the saddest game i have ever witnessed followed by the game 4 of the 2008 finals vs the celtics, if only horry made that shot,
Game 2 in 2008 killed me more than Game 4. And worst of all, G2 in 2008 reminded me of this game. Being down 24-25 and rushing back, only to lose. At least with 2008, we got won the next two.
@@000blocks000But come on bro, we had a much better chance beating the Spurs in 2003 than the Celtics in 2008.
Horry's shot in n out broke my heart
This was the season, Shaq waited until training camp to have surgery on his toe and missed a lot of games thus giving the spurs the home court that year.
Yup, meanwhile Kobe worked he tail off to reach legendary scoring status. Too bad.
Tbf, I’m not sure if the Lakers would’ve won the 2003 title if Shaq got surgery right after the 2002 finals. It was also a combination of a weak bench, lack of youth and athleticism besides Kobe and fisher, injuries to key role players like Rick Fox in the previous series vs the Wolves and being mentally worn down going 3 straight long playoff runs 3peating as champions. Same thing happened to the Pistons in 1991 after dominating the EC from 1988-1990 winning 2 out of 3 titles. Happens to every great dynsasty.
@@ArmandoKozomara Kobe was already at legendary scoring status before that year.
Spurs would've had home court anyway. The Lakers wouldn't have won anymore than maybe 56-57 games.
RIP
people wondering why horry was so clutch...because he wide open playing next to kobe and shaq lol
Fly High Hero 🥺
If robert horry made game winning 3 pointer the lakers would made a 4peat
Don't say Kobe doesn't pass. The last shot he passed on in the this game, unfortunately.
That last shot was the designed play after the timeout. The last shot was set for Horry.
Well lets be honest passing to Robert Horry isn't a bad decision.
Horry was so dry behind the arc on that series.
not even a laker or kobe fan, but damn... that 3 at the end should have gone in... it hurts to watch
Rip legend
RIP KOBE 😭
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THEY SAW THAT CROSSOVER AT 1:41!!!!! 😱
Zac Barnes shit was lethal
Right the commentators wanna act like they didn't see it lol
game still gets to me, should have went for the 2 to tie the game. LA had complete momentum and all the experience to outperform the Spurs for an extra 5 minutes.
this was on Horry...5 seconds left and he jacked up a 3 but Fisher is WIDE OPEN at the top of the key for 3 .. Also this is one Shaq...only 19 points or so.. He could have done a little bit more
even after he and gianna have passed away im still watching their highlights because i want to make up for all the years i didnt watch the nba (which was 2003-game 6 of 2016 finals..........yea no one told me about the nba so i couldnt watch them live fml) and im never gonna regret it even if its too late to watch their greatness now imma still appreciate them from now until i myself die RIP Kobe and gianna ;(
Between Fox being out and Horry playing his worst stretch of Basketball, Lakers couldn't overcome the Spurs. But not re-signing Horry was a mistake especially given how Malone's injured knee would play out.
THIS Kobe and if Shaq easnt so out of shape that year no questions shouldvr won 4 peat
if the lakers had won that game kobe bryant had 6 rings...
If horry made more shots that series the lakers would of won not only this game but the series and then the title .. I think horry was 1 for 18 or something like that .. As a lakers fan I remember he wasn't big shot bob that playoff run .. What could of been
anthony martin and if horry hadn't bailed out LA so many times in previous years they don't win 3 titles.
***** it was the teams fault they just wasn't playing like they could let's be real the spurs shouldn't have beaten a team with shaq and kobe on it and in there prime !!! I didn't shaq was as dominate as he could've been and.kobe tried to do to much at times
***** what he is saying is if Horry was his normal.self !!! But the Lakers shouldve never lost against anyone they were better when they played there best ball !!! Kobe did try n do.to much I agree he shouldve been feeding the diesel every.other time he touched the ball!!! People don't realize how dominating shaq truly was !! Even if jordan. Was on this Lakers team the ball should go into shaq everytime down !!!
Kobe literally willed his team back in the game. This is when Shaq started to decline. He only avg 19 ppg and 11 rpg this series, Kobe was really the only answer for the Spurs and has always been. His career avg vs them is over 30 ppg. Kobe was the reason they were in the game at all in the 4th. He scored 16 in the 4th!
Drink Me mad about the truth idiot
I was like damn, Robert Horry’s shot went in and out. See that’s the difference between Kobe and LBJ. Kobe going to give it to players he trust it just didn’t go in. LBJ will give it to anyone and then get mad when they don’t make it but he scared to take it. Lakers would of had 4 in a row dammit why was the iron unkind to mr. Big shot Bob.

Love your channel!!! I miss watching these games growing up 😭. Are you still alive? Thank you for uploading these videos!
that crossover at 1:42... YEESH
One of the most infuriating losses as a laker fan ever man. Come on Horry you gotta knock that down man. We probably would have wone the series if that shot goes in and walked through NJ for a 4 peat
02-03 Kobe is one of his best self
‘The Greatest’
legend
Sahq was limited, slow, he took most of the 24s to just get in position, that slow pace is bad for the playoffs, while Kobe was the real thing, the glue, the versatile player and the playmaker, that's also proved by the fact that Shaq never won FMVP without Kobe, and hell ! Even Shaq puts Kobe above him.
Leave the cocaine alone
literally the playoffs the game slows down pace wise LMAO
And they said he was carried. Aka Kobe haters
Dang, that final shot was so close to going down. I know the Spurs demolished the Lakers in Game 6 (and probably wins Game 7 at home had they lost this one), but still crazy to think this Lakers team could have played in 5 straight Finals.
Colorado Kobe
A gem of a game wasted smh would go down as one of Kobe's top playoff performances if Horry's shot went down
Heartbreaking loss i remember this game. They quit in game 6.
Kobe Bryant the black Mamba had 36 points vs San Antonio Spurs (including the pump fake out on Bruce Bowen and kicked it out big shot Robert Horry 3-point shot rimmed in and out as almost made a comeback from an 25-point deficit as the Spurs held on to an 96-94 victory and the Spurs lead 3-2)
kobe could've jumped against bowens body and would have gotten the call.
Michael Jordan
this is exactly what he should've done. there was an easy call waiting right there....
Kaan Koç i guess he did make a good play since Horry was more open then he was, if he takes the shot he's a ballhog, if he passes he was choking, can't win against kobe haters lol
Michael Jordan What's funny is this series is pretty much identical to the 04 one vs the Spurs except the only difference is Fisher hit his gamewinner in Game 5 and Horry didn't lol. Horry hits this 3 this game Lakers win the series in 6 and probably win 4 straight. Fisher doesn't hit that 0.4 in 04 and they probably lose in 6 on their home floor...just like in this series.
Michael Jordan sounds familiar.... lol
Michael Jordan I thought the same thing. Maybe its because Kobe got scared that if he did try to draw the foul, Bruce might use some of his Bruce Lee Bowen tactics again to injure him
Kobe doesn’t not get enough credit. He was successful during the spurs dynasty he has a wining record against the spurs in the playoffs. Not to many players can say that. Lebron lost to an old washed up spurs team. Kobe beat prime Duncan, Ginobli, Parker and them multiple times and with less. Kobe was a spurs killer.
Stop talking basketball. Spurs definitely weren’t washed up and Kobe had shaq for most of his victories against spurs
@@jasonmoukala8909you stop talking basketball he outplayed shaq in almost every one of those series against that #1 defense and also beat the spurs following their 2007 championship win with Gasol and ariza and Bynum hurt clown hadn’t they got hurt he would’ve 3 peated by himself too clown
This 2003 team is one of the best ever defensively. Top 5 for sure along with the 96 bulls, 2004 pistons, 2008 celtics, and maybe the 2005 pacers
The 2005 Pacers didn’t even win the title. How tf they’re one of the best defensive teams, Lmao. The 1998 Pacers, 1989 & 1990 Pistons were much better defensively.
@@Theterminato2013 you can be wrong all you want
If Horry hits that 3, this could've been the greatest playoff comeback of all time. Probably greatly increases the chance of the Lakers making the Finals this year.
Kobe wearing the AJVIII Playoff 8s... Just got those shoes this year. God works in mysterious ways.
Tell me why Kobe is not in the conversation before Lebron? Clearly Kobe won more than Lebron and is more skilled. Kobe faced and beat more Plus 500 teams than any other NBA great including Michael.
They shouldn’t be compared imo
2 different types of players
Kobe is closer to Jordan , and Jordan and Lebron shouldn’t be compared either.
People should just appreciate greatness and those guys are all great.
Spurs always brought the best out of Kobe
damn, kobe should have taken the last shot,he was hot in that 4th quarter..an easy call on bowen there waiting..cmon guys, lets blame kobe for passing the ball..
🐐
Horry... ble.... that three shot was worth a ring.... good luck the spurs.. the Lakers better team....
kobe had the 4pt plAy there at the end
I think Kobe could have drawn the foul on Bowen in the end instead of passing to Horry. Some called him selfish but I want the best player and best scorer to shoot the shots and this case he should have rather than passing.
Still in 2023 no team has 3 peated since this Lakers team and they were that close to 4 peating
With the game kobe was having he shouldve taken the last shot he would've hit it i no he would've he was on fire most of the second half .. this game right here killed the Lakers I still can't believe the spurs beat them in 03 it shouldve never happened the Lakers were better they just played like shit . Shaq wasn't the same shaq he was in 01 playoffs and 02 playoffs but the spurs was amazing no doubt but shaq and kobe and the Lakers shouldve won't that series
That in-n-out three by Rob caused the Lakers their 4th ring.
@1:40💀☠💀💀💀☠ he got bit by that mamba 🐍
Classic Game I just wish the lakers would have won
If Kobe lends in to draw the foul they win that series and a fourth title

Perfect performance by Kobe but didnt enough for win
His teammates didn't do enough to help. Namely Shaq and Horry missing that buzzer beater he should have hit.
Kobe didnt shoot well in that series though, around 43% although he was great from 3...This was the year he really starting to take a lot more shots than Shaq...the t=supporting cast was aging and not that good though.
These the games they don’t talk about
Robert Horry STRUGGLED
If Horry shot went in we would have 4-peat!! Go LAKERS
kobe should have took that shot..i remember being so mad when they lost lol i cried
the "Bowen can guard Kobe" statement is laughable. Kobe's been scoring at will any season they face each other 2001, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08
Spurs vs lakers 03 playoffs western conf semifinals, the black mamba had 36 pts(robert horry missed 3-pt shot rattled in and popped out) as the spurs held off the 3-time champs lakers a 2-pt win with an 96-94 victory and spurs held a 3-2 lead, tim duncan had 27 points 14 rebounds and tony parker had 21 pts,Bruce Bowen and Stephen Jackson each in double figures with 12 points combined?
But it doesn’t matter that the Lakers lost, all that matters is the Lakers played with honor, so that game is more for the Lakers
Had LA won this game I think the Lakers 4 peat and Kobe would get Finals MVP for the first time
I never realized if Kobe would’ve took that last shot he had Robinson damn near in his face after he pump faked Bowen. That wouldn’t have been too wise! He made the right decision kicking it out to Horry.
The average nba player scores 10 points per game. The lakers in 2003 had shaq average 27 and kobe average 30 and then fisher average 10 and everyone else was less than that. I don’t blame shaq or kobe. They literally had nothing else. Imagine if they had a sixth man like manu… nobody can ever convince me duncan is better than either kobe or shaq
I agree man that was the difference in the series the spurs just had a better team that was deeper the lakers only had Kobe and Shaq they came close with just those two but it wasn’t enough made very easy to double Shaq and Kobe did everything he could
Robert Horry Lowkey wasn't a good 3 point shooter he was just clutch
Me after the final buzzer : phew
Damn Robert Horry. The one time I wanted him to knock that shot down he misses h
IF ROBERT HORRY'S 3 POINTER WOULD HAVE STAYED IN AT THE END OF THE GAME. THE LAKERS WOULD HAVE WON 4 TITLES IN A ROW!!! THAT SHOT STILL HAUNTS ME...
