    2003 Western Conference Semifinals Game 5, May 13, 2003 | The game that ultimately ended the Lakers long reign at the apex of the league. What could have been a 3-2 lead heading back home to Staples after an epic comeback on the road quickly became a situation where the Lakers faced the brink of elimination after a game winning three point attempt by Robert Horry rattled in-and-out as the final seconds ticked away. Although the Lakers fell behind big early, going down by as many as 25 points, their best player wouldn't let the team go down without a fight. Kobe aimed to do everything he could on the court, scoring 36 points, pulling down 7 rebounds, and dishing out 6 assists while playing all 48 minutes. Had that three by Robert Horry gone in, I can only assume the Lakers would close the series out at home in game 6 and gone on to face the Dallas Mavericks in the conference finals. We'll never know what would have happened, but that shot may have been what separated the Lakers from an unfathomable 4th title in as many years.

      lol, kobe is the reason they lost this series. Here's all you need to know; In 2000 shaq led the team in field goal attempts and scoring and they won the finals. from 2001-2002 kobes field goal attempts slowly surpassed shaq but shaq still led the team in scoring; kobes field goal attempts kept getting bigger and bigger until he outshot shaq by a ridiculous amount, way way higher than the previous 2 years, until he barely surpassed shaq in scoring in 2003-2004 and they lost to the spurs and pistons; kobe was shooting a ridiculous amount of more shots than shaq but only leading the team in scoring by like a point or 2 per game; So basically kobe just kept shooting with the sole goal of being the teams leading scorer; if kobe had let the offense run though shaq like phil desined the lakers 5 peat, no question. And no, i don't buy that "shaq was out of shape crap", thats league propoganda promoted during the late 00's by stern to promote the idea that kobe was "chasing jordan", my ass. Kobe thought he was jordan, and wanted to push this idea. He wasn't. Shaq was jordan from 2000-2004. He won 3 straight finals mvps from 2000-2002, kobe won 0; he won a scoring title and a league mvp, kobe won zero. Shaq was jordan from 2000-2004 but kobe tried to be jordan from 2003-2004.

    The death of a dynasty. If Horry makes that shot, this game...coming back from 25 down against the Spurs, would've outscored them 33-16 in the fourth quarter...who knows what that might have done psychologically to that group. Robinson retires with only one ring and his legacy is altered. Maybe the Spurs make changes to what they did. That * for the shortened, silly 1999 season looms a little larger. But yeah, LA wins the title. Dallas simply couldn't beat them...it was a mental thing for those guys. And the FInals is a more competitive replay of 2002. It's amazing how the losses hurt more than the winning feels good. Nothing was sweeter for me than Gm 6 against Boston in 1987 and then Gm 7 against Boston in 2010. No loss hurt more than this one. Because that last 16 minutes of the game was the Lakers last stand as essentially constructed for the 3peat. They emptied the clip that night and I knew unlike the year before losing a close, tightly contested game against Sac in Gm 5...they weren't going to win Gm 6 in '03. I knew it. I didn't even watch the game. Came home from working OT at my job and saw they were down 25. Just turned the TV off. Didn't see Kobe and Fish's tears...that was a formality. This was the game to win. And ironically, the roles reversed the next year when Fisher hit the 0.4 second shot. The Spurs were DEAD in that '04 Gm 6. Just knew.

      Not necessarily. If they won this game, I might have liked the Spurs in seven. The Spurs were going to stomp them in game six regardless of the outcome of game five. Clearly the Spurs were way better that year. They had a tendency to let teams back in games. The Mavs made a run at them too only to later be stomped.

    Everything went wrong for the Lakers in this series. Horry missed clutch shots he would have made in 2002, Fox was replaced by George, so the Laker's were weaker defensively, and most importantly, Shaq's heart wasn't in the series. Shaq was already looking to leaving the team. He wasn't his dominating self as he was in 2001 and 2002. Kobe played like a man possessed, but it wasn't enough.

      I think it has more to do with Shaq being fatigued after 3 straight deep playoff runs leading the Lakers into titles constantly getting double and triple teamed and dealing with nagging injuries. Same thing happened to Kobe during the 2011 playoffs after leading the Lakers to 3 straight finals appearances in 2008-2010 and back to back titles. 2011, Kobe was playing on fumes dealing with nagging knee and ankle injuries during the playoffs.

    • @brianchua4240
      @brianchua4240 Год назад +8

      Shaq's heart was not in it because he was also coming off a toe surgery that kept him out early of the season. At one point, they were 11-19. So to turn it around and go 39-13 is impressive. But it definitely took it's toll on them. Their bench production was also weaker than 2002's.

      Shaq wasn’t looking to leave at that point he and Kobe were getting along great actually 01-02 and 02-03 there was no drama and if Kobe wouldn’t have gotten into trouble in Colorado later that summer they probably don’t start fighting then when Kobe said that Shaq paid women off that’s when the wheels fell off the wagon. Shaq felt betrayed by Kobe and Shaq wanted a new contract and Buss didn’t want to pay him what he wanted cause Kobe was gonna be a free agent the following summer and was do anything to keep him but unfortunately this missed shot by Horry was the beginning of the end for these Lakers

      Tbf, I’m not sure if the Lakers would’ve won the 2003 title if Shaq got surgery right after the 2002 finals. It was also a combination of a weak bench, lack of youth and athleticism besides Kobe and fisher, injuries to key role players like Rick Fox in the previous series vs the Wolves and being mentally worn down going 3 straight long playoff runs 3peating as champions. Same thing happened to the Pistons in 1991 after dominating the EC from 1988-1990 winning 2 out of 3 titles. Happens to every great dynsasty.

    I was like damn, Robert Horry’s shot went in and out. See that’s the difference between Kobe and LBJ. Kobe going to give it to players he trust it just didn’t go in. LBJ will give it to anyone and then get mad when they don’t make it but he scared to take it. Lakers would of had 4 in a row dammit why was the iron unkind to mr. Big shot Bob.

    Sahq was limited, slow, he took most of the 24s to just get in position, that slow pace is bad for the playoffs, while Kobe was the real thing, the glue, the versatile player and the playmaker, that's also proved by the fact that Shaq never won FMVP without Kobe, and hell ! Even Shaq puts Kobe above him.

    Kobe Bryant the black Mamba had 36 points vs San Antonio Spurs (including the pump fake out on Bruce Bowen and kicked it out big shot Robert Horry 3-point shot rimmed in and out as almost made a comeback from an 25-point deficit as the Spurs held on to an 96-94 victory and the Spurs lead 3-2)

      Michael Jordan What's funny is this series is pretty much identical to the 04 one vs the Spurs except the only difference is Fisher hit his gamewinner in Game 5 and Horry didn't lol. Horry hits this 3 this game Lakers win the series in 6 and probably win 4 straight. Fisher doesn't hit that 0.4 in 04 and they probably lose in 6 on their home floor...just like in this series.

    Kobe doesn’t not get enough credit. He was successful during the spurs dynasty he has a wining record against the spurs in the playoffs. Not to many players can say that. Lebron lost to an old washed up spurs team. Kobe beat prime Duncan, Ginobli, Parker and them multiple times and with less. Kobe was a spurs killer.
