- Cannonless is a trick in SM64 that has changed a lot over the years and continues to evolve in terms of the way that it is done.
In this video I document the history of cannonless in SM64 speedruns as well as its volatile nature and unpredictable future.

I was inspired to make this when I had realized just how crazy it is that we have a cannonless setup because for many years, there was no setup, and this didn't stop speedrunners of the game from going for it.
Also just reminiscing on the old days and remembering so many resets coming from cannonless, and the fact that speedrunning has grown so much that its possible many current members of the SM64 community may not be aware of the old days of cannonless.

Biggest flex:
Optimize ever other corner of the game, get this star with the cannon for WR
I'm not sure you could do that.
With how optimized SM64 runs are? The time lost from using the cannon would likely result in losing an otherwise perfect run.
@@Ozionian this could be tested if a TAS was made with perfectly optimized human-possible routes.
@@GoldenGrenadier
I'd like to see it, if only for the sake of the flex.
I'm sure we could just take the time lost from using the cannon, and subtract it from a prexisting TAS run, see how it stacks up to the current WR.
Probably not something I'll be doing though.
@Abserial TAS isn't always optimized for human possible routes
@Abserial yeah that's what they were getting at though I think. *If* we had one of those
Speedruns are really cool but quality content like this is pure gold
glad you liked it!
Gave you the 69th like ;)
I dont even watch actual speed runs I just find shit like this fascinating
You should check out SHiFT's BFBB stuff. The new 4-part series they're making is amazing.
Waste of time:/
I accidentally did cannonless as a kid when i fell off the bridge.
Oh that's awesome
I'm calling bs
@@CalizpzZ0 why would he lie?
wqjwdirherfuehfriughf it’s true. I was never able to do it again until recently though, and after a lot of practice.
@@CalizpzZ0 Yup, you caught them, as we all know, no glitches have ever been discovered on accident, and the games we played as kids were always 100% stable and ran as intended. Damn, nice going sherlock
The DS version is impossible to do cannonless as the star spawns after you break the wall.
What's fun though is that you don't need to *open* the cannon, you can just clip inside it!
@@adealmusic what does that have to do with it
@@johnbob914 in some sense, this could be considered cannonless. And even if it's not, it still shows that the star is also kinda broken in sm64ds too
interesting
The DS version is good for casual players, but for people who speedrun the original, it’s a nightmare.
"Of course, as everyone knows, a 16-star run involves spawning Mips and phasing through reality"
Doesn’t even sound like Mario lol
@@bbqseitan7106 man then you rly gotta catch up on the parallel universes too i'm at least 4 ahead of you right now
A speedrun catagory that bans this glitch would be called cannonlessless.

Carpetless: *Am I a joke to you?*
True!!! I think only one person has been able to do carpetless in real time, right?
Yes, as of now, only one person has completed carpetless in real time, only it was a single segment and not in a real run. Still super impressive tough.
Right! And It's probably gonna be a long time till its standard and run
what is a carpetless?
Yes

"The trick that almost ruined GAME Speedruns"
What is this, looking down at the ground to reduce lag? A trick unintentionally discovered by a 50-something man, based off a misconception?
What is this referencing? Genuinely curious.
@@Marx_D._Soul A GoldenEye 007 speedrunning trick, that Karl Jobst (I think?) covered. A trick that many GE007 runners at the time despised, due to it not being very visually stimulating.
I don't currently remember the 50-something guy's name, the one who unintentionally discovered this trick when he misinterpreted "keep your head down and put your nose to the grindstone", or a saying along those lines.
@@PokeMaster22222 Oh, damn, yeah I'd hate a trick like that.

@@ivanhui6051 Yeah, that's it. He's no longer around - he died several years ago - but his controversial discovery will ensure his name will be remembered.

The single star strats for that star are also super cool! Great video.
THEE NINJA IN SIMPLY'S COMMENT SECTION!?? Bruh
SOOOOOORRRRYYYYY
I like to think that with all the copies of Mario 64 sold, someone must have accidentally slipped off of the bridge and did cannonless.
Well some have
Hundreds must have, considering the millions of units sold (over 10 million, IIRC) and how many times clueless players dicked around in the different stages. Falling around that plank is pretty common too, it’s just a matter of probability till someone gets it. Likely many, many of them.
Thanks Simply!
Just recently got into Speedruns (only watch you and Cheese), since my 2 year old son decided he loves watching Mario 64 footage. So, I just throw on your stream and he sits there for 15 minutes telling me all about the red coins and the yellow coins and the stars. He especially loves when you get the blue coins haha.
Keep it up man, GLHF
Aw that's so cute :)
Hes a real og 💪
Easily one of my favorite RUclips comments ever, very cute.
I loved the blue coins so much as a kid. No idea why, but idk, getting the blue coins, watching speedrunners getting them during 100 coins stars, it still gives me some of those vibes even if i'm 25 yo now.
I've only done OG cannonless less than 5 times ever.. and it was just for fun really.. As a newer runner I really take the setup for granted.. It must have been a struggle back in the days without it.. Props to all those who worked on cannonless through the years!
Blows my mind how prominent SM64 speedrunning has become, i remember playing this game as a kid on N64 , crazy
@@ayejay4028 What happened to your N64? And copy of Mario 64?
I remember before I could look things up on the internet that this star always pissed me off because I never knew that it expected me to shoot that wall.I know it's called blast away the wall but it was vague as to what one and I never ever thought to shoot that little corner. I was convinced that the blast away the wall star was something involving luring the bullet Bill up top to crash into the tower to open something.
Exactly that’s what I thought lol. And that’s not the only star where I didn’t know what the game wanted me to do because of the vague descriptions
Great story telling man. I have only a slight interest in speed running, but your narration really drew me in. Now I want to know more about the culture of finding exploits
9:40 .. One of the biggest breakthroughs in Mario 64.. alongside "discovering save state codes". What are save state codes?
savestates use to only be available on emulator but eventually members of the community discovered it was possible to make a savestate using gameshark codes.
@@SimplyN64 thanks
Oooo but is that even legal in normal speedruns? Using game shark must surely fall into the category of tool-assisted.
BLJ is a breakthrough too
I've been curious about the history of cannonless since i got into the game, this is so so good.
I was joking with my friends about doing cannonless, i just started messing with the camera as if I was trying to do it, when I tried to grab the star and I actually did, my soul came off my body...
I love this video. I'd love a series like this from you. Congrats so much on your WR
this is a great video, awesome watch! and congrats on the recent WR!!! amazing video
I don’t get how people discover some of these specific moves that guarantee an exploit. “Kill the piranha plant, ledge grab this corner, get up, punch twice, walking down....”
Me: * bass boosted * “HUH???”
It took him a week of livestreaming his testing
Fun fact, most of those steps you listed aren't even necessary, they're just the weird initial way he got into position.
I have been getting into this world of SM64 SR recently and videos likes this are just awesome! You are able to transmit the passion of the past and the discoveries that made history. Keep it up!
Trying, failing and retrying over and over again for hours is the reason why I'm glad I'm not a speedrunner.
Love watching
But can’t do it myself lol
wow we need more history of stars!! PLess, BLJs, VC, ttm reds...
Very informative, well put together video. I never even thought about how crazy a set up canonless is because I've only been watching mario 64 runs for a couple years now, but this really puts it into perspective. Fun watch too. Thank you!
I've been binge watching your videos tonight and these are my favourite type! The SSL red coins video was excellent aswell. I love these progression videos, keep up the great content simply ♡
Really good video! Thank you so much for this Simply. I'm starting sm64 speedruns (70 star specifically) and I've never been able to get that star consistently without the cannon. However the only way I've been trying is the "og cannonless" way. I'll have to try this setup now. Also this video gave a lot of great info on the history of this star, which I really loved.
Great content. Always learning something new about m64 when I watch your vids.
This was fantastic. Thank you for doing the research and preserving this information for the ages.
This is one of the few games in Speedrunning that has evolved and gotten so complex. Nice video man
Most professional video you've done yet - very cool!
Love this informational content man. Good stuff!
Objectively very funny that sockfolder was doing a bunch of weird unnecessary shit when he just had to do a short set up
Nice job on the video love the history of cannonless also great commentary
Never had an idea for how old Cannonless actually was, for a community-shattering glitch. These videos push so much on how critical such big discoveries can be, and I cannot thank you enough for tracing back through the pain pre-Siglemic era.
It's a glitch that when it comes time somebody will refine again and again and again. They'll find ways to set up to the texture or something faster. Or an angle to jump from one place to another that makes something else more consistant. There is a lot of precision in runs today that just didn't exist back then that some of these old tricks got neglected for a long time. And Mario64 isn't the only game that's had tricks like this that were much older than their regular implementation.
can i get a compilation of every time he say "wanp"? i love it.
TSMSnation wanp wanp wanp wanp wanp
This was a really cool video. So happy to have seen it. Thank you Simply
mitch jones casually doing OG canonless in the 120 star relay even though its one of the hardest tricks to pull off consistently.
I seen this happen a lot in speed runs and forgot what was the name of the star. "Blast away the wall" thanks for upload and thanks for getting to the point quick. Thumbs up
Great video I could watch your commentary videos all day!
This documentary style content is extremely well done
Yo I LOVED this essay style video!
It’s fun to look back at how much evolved since the day I proposed a challenge to some SM64 players to see how many stars were collectible without ever collecting a cap or activating a cannon in 1998 over AOLIM.
Time flies.
We need more quality content like this!
great video, simply. Keep up the good work
Almost a decade ago I used to love watching Siglemic stream SM64 runs, but hated that most times he would reset due to failing cannonless. It was a rush of dopamine seeing him hit it knowing a real run was finally starting.
So where’s SRM in sm64 lets teleport the loaded cannon less Star,, Let’s Go Savestate Woo !!
Simply this slaps my booty cakes. keep making these. you have so much knowledge and experience with this game. I'd love to hear more insights on various strats and tech evolutions.
Dotodoya: It's a little trick that goes like this
more vids like this if it’s possible, such a nice vid big simp great job
I find tsukishima cycle much harder to get consistently than og cannonless. idk if I'm good at cannonless, or if I just need to spend 10 more hours on practicing the first 5 seconds of dark world
Thats what I love about speedrunning, some guy creates a setup that is raw and unoptimized and the community proceeds to make it more efficient
Loved this type of video! Hope to see more like it!
And now 16 star is progressing to the point where OG cannonless is becoming a thing again
It is kind of crazy how fast records improved after the setup was found
I actually learned something from this because I was wondering what canonless was & why was it faster to jump down to the start then getting it down at the bottom. I guess it happen so fast that I didn't know that the start was stored in the crack of the wall. Now it all makes sense on why it's called canonless. I learn something new everyday. Thanks for making this video explain canonless because I was lost.
For a minute I was like how did you upload tomorrow, 2021 has got me fucked up
today we learned that og cannonles in fact did come back
12:23
Narrator: Little did Simply know, this world record would soon be his.
This is absolutely fascinating. I can't imagine how many times you have to mess up in order to perfect these super precise movements. I've been playing SM64 on the Wii U the last couple weeks and it's hard as hell, I have no idea how these people do this stuff. If I wouldn't have owned it on the N64 as a kid I wouldn't have been able to figure out half of the shit in order to beat it. It's incredible.
That first setup for canonless looks like a playground legend for how to get Yoshi in Pokémon
I'm stuck to resetting on cannonless EVEN WITH a setup lol
Simply a great video
Blast away the wall was one of the only stars I never figured out when I was a youngun. You can see that there's a little seam between it and the rest of the wall but it's hard to see and unless you knew you could blast it away, you'd probably not see it or you'd overlook it. But it's cool because the inconspicuousness of that one part of one wall in the stage makes it satisfying if you figured it out on your own. It's like secrets in the og zelda or super metroid where you just have to hear about it or stumble upon it. Or if you figured out that blast means using a cannon, you could cannon yourself into every section of wall that you can until you solve it
1:46 "It's stuck inside the wall, or is it?" (Vsauce intro plays)
16 star WR now uses OG canonless
i fucking love videos like this , keep it up dude
Holy shit I’ve been subbed to simp since 900 and now he’s blowing up so deserved
Great vid dude
Imagine if cannonless was a late star. So many resets.
More speed running history plz
woulda been fun if you talked about long jump OG as well, for the hell of it
good point
wow this was a really good video! More please
"While speedrunners quickly discovered you could skip the cannon for shoot into the wild blue"
--- You mean 7 year old me quickly discovered this because using the cannon was way too risky and I was tired of dying. LOL
By Odin's beard, Yes!
Imagine being in a competitive hobby that focuses on a repetitive and tedious obsession with trying to finish a game as quickly as possible, and then complaining because someone else in the hobby you chose to dedicate yourself towards happened to find an even more repetitive and tedious way to finish that game faster.
Take a drink everytime he says canonless.
Imagine you fall from that bridge by accident, and you get the star.
Honestly the star is so near the beginning of runs that while it is horribly frustrating to mess up - I definitely think OG will become a staple of future records. As long as you have time to kill and the patience of a saint, it's really not the end of the world to reset there. If it was further into the run I could see it being an unattainable goal though
great vid simply
Simply just has such a talent on the mic. I can't place my finger on it, but any time he does commentary or videos or whatever, it's just… good. Idk what it is?
That's amazing, thanks for this !
I have been able to do cannonless with the setup pretty easily, and if I ever start speedrunning Mario 64, I will definitely go for it every time.
This turned into history lesson
love the way he says " WHAMPS"
SBLJ at this video: "Am I a joke to you."
As someone who has used the cannon every single time for 'shoot into the wild blue', when I did it on Switch I did it cannonless first time ever and first go ever but I did it from the fence line next to the blue coin switch instead of the ramp on the way down.
Dotodoya really be a speed running prodigy he does canon less so easily
1:48 *Vsauce music starts playing*
Casual players: huh, interesting glitch! Speedrunners: *P A I N*
Superb video!
One time I was playing Mario 64 on my emulator and I accedently slipped off the thing and did cannonless accedently I was amazed
2:30 cool the reverse
This games still beating 2020 games
All I can think about is watching Jawsh attempting the canonless shortcut on stream and failing consistently
A crack [...] as "a source of frustrating, intrigue, and curiosity" - not just SM64 players
Seeing so many failed cannonless in a row was starting to drive me mad
