Hello, Byron, I’ve just been lucky enough to discover your channel, when looking for Hobie info. You’re really relevant to my fishing pursuits because: 1) you’re in Australia 2) your logical, no-nonsense approach to both information sharing, and product choice & review, gives me a sense of familiarity with you straight away. 3) you list both pros and cons equally, not glossing over any points. Well-shot production, clean edits, quality a/v gear, all adds up to a product that’s enjoyable to watch, informative, cost, fit and availability- relevant. Well done to you & your crew.👍👍
Great insight Byron! Aparently the Brushless sound reduction diminishes 16:30 as the Motor ages. Would have really like to see the Ultrex included, to make it a full review on the best available.
I have an ultrex..... and are around them a lot with at least 30 tournament friends that run ultrex.... even though they are reliable they are extremely noisy both the motor and the head turning motor.
I'm selling my Garmin for the New Quest...that should tell you a little something..I was that impressed with it.. I wasn't all that impressed with the Garmin..
I’ve had the Garmin about a year and love it. It pushes my boat well at 24v. Only issue I’ve had with it is when a tree fell on the shaft during a storm . It’s a tough little beast. While I was expecting catastrophic damage, it only cracked the shaft and the shock damaged the control board (controller did not take a direct strike). Hell I think the tree would have done more damage to the boat itself than it did the motor if the motor wasn’t there 😂. Anyways I bought a new shaft, and Garmin replaced the board under warranty. Both were easily fixed in a couple hours, and it performs perfectly again.
I've been looking for a recent video of the Garmin, so I appreciate this post. I've got a chance to save over $2K on some Echomap sonar's on sale at Bass Pro in the U.S., but I'm really on edge about the Force. Lot of issues floating around with the Force, with the consensus being "It's the best trolling motor on the market, once the issues get fixed". And, most of those reviews were 1-2yrs ago, minimum. Although, this is the first review I've heard talking about a poor/cheap foot-pedal design with the Garmin, or bad customer service from Garmin. Garmin US has been very responsive, by all accounts I've seen. So, this is somewhat surprising. Doesn't seem to be any good answers, at this point, short of the best price available (which in my case, at the moment, is the Force). What a mess...and Minn-Kota's supply chain only makes the Ultrex available (without the normal remote, or bluetooth, which they'll send once they become available)....how convenient for Minn-Kota. What a mess. Makes me want to throw my hands up for a ridiculously overpriced Power-Pole Move, which is supposed to be indestructible.
With the garmin pedal, there is an adjustment screw which adjusts the pressure u were describing. I found it by accident, cause i hated it like u did, till i found that screw.
mate you are correct, I thought I put a graphic up saying there was an adjustment screw. maybe it didn’t work. you’re right though, did play around with it
Another great review mate , interesting too see what arrives in the next 2 years and improvements too some of these existing units, it seems every brand does soo well and just miss the mark by 2% on something that has you scratching your head 😅 can't wait for more reviews
Great video, certainly advantages of brushless over the old school minnkota, any word on the minnkota going brushless? I often wonder why these manufacturers don't do a polarity swap button, save spinning the head 180 degrees to move back out after retrieving a lure from a bank or obstacle. Pain in the neck going in, focusing on the job of not breaking a rod tip and removing trebles, then to have to spin the head around and try and manoeuvre back again. Be an easy mod, solenoid flips the +/-.
@ByronTeaHill FYI The garmin foot pedal has a tension adjustment screw on the front left of the pedal, all you need is an Allen wrench. You can dail in the pedal tension to your liking . 👍 not alot of people know this so I hope this helps others.
Can you hold speed in km/h or mph with the Lowrance Ghost? Not just the power setting, but actually holding a speed like you can do with a Minn Kota iPilot remote.
Will be interested to see your experiences and thoughts when you get around to Humminbird and Minn Kota. Great review as always. Given you have now run both Garmin and Lowrance sounders - any real stand-out or preferences purely from a sounder perspective?
Great review mate. Would any joe blow get the fly in rep service seriously you know that truthful answer. I’d love a Ghost but a smaller boat security reasons at home to remove each trip. The Min Kota if you choose is a great motor with plenty of great features. Hand control, foot and phone controls Bluetooth if all fails. Have a safe trip O/S and hope to to see more content.
You can purchase all those parts relatively cheap. I just did brushes and a new armature and all seals on my minn kota for $70. I think the housing was $30. 307 fish is a good source for all the parts, cheap and easy to work on.
Great vid as always mate. Would Garmin go to the extent they have of sending a rep if it wasn't for you? I think they may have realised you have a large reach on the socials and a large influence in sales so went the extra mile. Pretty poor to leave you and the marine dealer high and dry to begin with 🤷🏽♂️ Great information throughout the vid mate and if I do switch to a boat I'll take the tips on board.
Second this point. Flying a guy in to personally fix a issue is - let’s be honest - the best service ever in the history of boating, or at least highly unusual. Have to think there is some sort of ‘we need to sort this one guy out asap’ type stuff. Even so, respect to them for actually doing it. Credit where it is due. Great vid Again BTH, onwards and upwards.
Minn kota is still the king of trolling motors. They have been doing it for 85 years. Lets see in 5 years how these motors have held up. Both of these are their companies first jump into making motors, and we all know how that goes.
I’m really disappointed that neither of these units have remote trim. I fish in shallow water with oyster bars and irregular rocks. Can’t really get by without being able to adjust the trim remotely.
Hey mate, just want to confirm that the Lowrance ghost is able to go in saltwater? Everything I’ve read says that it is only warranted for freshwater and it cannot go in brackish or salt water. I’m looking to get one, but I predominantly fish saltwater estuaries.
Or for the same price you can get the brushed minn kota, it will have less power, less range, and it'll take a crap on you next year.... minn kota should be charged criminally for that decision. Their motor tech is far older than the Flintstones
@@ByronTeaHill Hi Byron, i have no idea how brushless actually works. I just bought a Garmin Striker 7 SV sounder, my first but not installed yet.
