After many requests, I'm finally weighing in on the topic. Two iconic gaming rivals go head to head! It may or may not be noticeable, but I've started to draw heavy inspiration from animators like Jamix007 and OMM's TheWind, as I seriously admire their respective styles. Nicely Done! I especially liked the ending- where Sonic offered a hand to Mario, Them sparing off as friendly rivals is such a welcome and refreshing change compared to other all or nothing battles they are usually depicted in!

I like how the characters weren't too overpowered like in most animations. Since in the games their powers are very inconsistent. Sometimes they can survive a giant fall from the atmosphere to the ground and get up relatively unharmed while some times they can barely pack a punch because of plot.
But they really are overpowered I mean Mario is consistently powerful the tennis court blast. outrunning black holes some how beating ghosts up somehow .kicking castles and dragging gold chain chomp around

Death Battle just cherry picks what feats they use at this point with their composite versions of the characters they use.

I love how you gave Mario and Sonic distinct fighting styles that Most animators just forget about:
Sonic: Reliant on his Speed and Racks up damage Progressively (1:12 Example)
Mario: Utilizes his Firebrand Ability and Combat Knowledge to Deal as Much Damage as he Can without getting Rushed down (0:43 Example)

One thing I like about this animation is the contrast between the two character's fighting styles. Sonic with his superior speed is always the first to strike and is all about quick, aggressive, and powerful attacks like fire bending. Mario may be physically inferior but he knew how to counter it. He knows he can't match Sonic's speed so he always waited for Sonic to make the first move like earth bending. If you pay attention most of the time Mario starts his combos start with a block. with Sonic in close proximity Mario can unleash his fury. Nice attention to detail

@DC Nintendo Sonic if he is physically strong. Most of his strength is in his legs, but even with his arms he can easily tear metal or destroy it.
@ZXA Sorry, but I disagree and think your incorrect. Sonic’s punching power and arm strength are inferior to mario. Play Mario 64 for example, he is able to punch, and damage literal spirits , (boos) giant bricks, in Super Mario RPG he punches through metal as well, his physical strength is much more consistent. This is shown in their stats being compared in their Olympic spin offs with Mario having more strength. Mario has shown more impressive strength feats than Sonic. Sonic just beats mario because of his ungodly speed. So Mario’s superior physical strength doesn’t matter because of this. Same thing with knuckles, he’s physically stronger but Sonic’s superior speed is why he wins. Mario is also more experienced and has fought just as many, deadly threats as Sonic has. Mario has reactionary feats to speed because he can dodge , and combat reality warpers and ancient demons which are basically Gods in Mario’s world. Culex, The Shadow Queen, Dreamy Bowser, Antasma, Dimentio, Bowser himself, where all Galactic, Universal, Worldly threats. The guy has overpowered many villains. He has done this with his brother before, and with his allies, but alot of the time it’s Mario and Luigi’s own strength. Sonic uses the chaos emeralds , and his own power when fighting powerful beings , so similarly, Mario use the pure hearts, which greatly outclass the chaos emeralds in terms of variety of f abilities. I consider Paper Mario the same as Mainline Mario personally, Ik it had a cross over with Mario and Luigi, but Paper Mario and Our Mario are the same character in my eyes. In my opinion, Mario is a better character and series, but I see why Sonic wins. He’s a lot like Mario but with slightly less strength , power ups and experience but way more Speed and Agility.
@ZXA “A Top Hat” , yeah that’s funny, I remember “That Top Hat” being Mario’s size, if not bigger, with giant arms and fists attached to it and spikes at the rim. Your logic is silly and flawed and you have no attention to detail. This is not Mickey Mouse being compared to Son Goku. Those Allies do not do all of the work 90% of the time, Mario does all of the work and they aid him. That doesn’t take away or equate Mario’s power level compared to Sonic. Sonic had help in all of the adventure games and sonic heroes from his friends because he lacks strength and intellect compared to knuckles and tails. He’s been helped on many adventures almost as much as Mario has. Also ramming something head on is not nearly impressive as punching something. The cranium is much more durable and powerful then a fist. So being able to punch apart brick BLOCKS , not “bricks”, which implies individual slabs that make a giant brick block as seen in the Mario games, is impressive. Especially when they are the same , if not bigger of a size then Mario is. His physicality does not outperform Mario’s by a large margin, that’s insanely biased to say that. Your making Mario sound weak and puney. His combat skills are the same as Mario’s , he relies on jumping punching and kicking just like Mario but at faster speeds. Yes, durability I’ll give you. But as for physicality that is so wrong on so many levels that I wonder if you even know who Mario is? As a Sonic fan, you should also know that a video game can not capture lighting fast speed, so what if that Hat wasn’t slowly moving towards Mario as seen in the cutscene? It looked really fast to me, and it probably caught Mario off guard. He probably stared at it because he didn’t expect bowser to throw his top hat at him. Mario also dodged bowser’s attacks with jumps , which you missed when watching the cutscene. Sonic’s strength comes from his speed. He is able to punch and kick stuff like robots because he is moving at an insanely high speed towards them, and that acceleration gives him his power. If he’s not running and walks up to something and punches it, he’ll fail to do much damage. But Mario on the other hand doesn’t need speed to have strength , he does it regardless of the speed he moves at. Mario outclasses Sonic in physcial strength by a wide, massive margin. If it came down to strength he’d tear him limb from limb if he wasn’t a good person and they fought to the death. It would be a blood bath of blue quills flying in the air.
Putting the emphasis on the 'friendly' part of their friendly rivalry, rather than battles to the death.
That alone made me love this above many other battles between these two.
Everything else was a very welcome and major bonus.

Also why would Sonic walk away from Mario in a friendly sparring match, especially when they're friends? Helping Mario up is what Sonic would do, he wouldn't just walk away. And it doesn't matter if the Olympic Games aren't canon, it is in character for them to be friendly and become friends when they do meet.

This sprite battles never get tiring, the battle was so good. I'm not sure if it was voice acting, but if it was, it was really good, and how Sonic roasted Eggman, really made me laugh. I wish they could make some type of crossover besides Olympics. That would be pretty amazing. Keep up the work dude.
The thing I liked the most is that this is a friendly, albeit heated, spar. I've grown tired of people making these 2 enemies.

loved this little animation............... nothing too flashy, just a friendly sparring match between 2 pals, and the fact that no "power ups" (i.e chaos emeralds, light speed dash, fire flower or anything of that sort) were used made it all the more enjoyable

When The Franchise extended started playing, I immediately liked the video. Plus it perfectly fit the entire fight when it came to duration. Your animation was gold (too bad Mario lost, but hey, at least they were fighting 100 % friendly).

STRENGTH/POWER/DURABILITY
Sonic is strong enough to shatter a stalactite with a force equal to 199.5 kilotons of TNT. However, Mario is strong enough to lift up a 61 million ton castle and kick it with a force equal to about 3.4 megatons of TNT. That's about 231 times more powerful than the Little Boy bomb, the atomic bomb that dropped on Hiroshima. "But wasn't Sonic strong enough to defeat Shadow?" Who is strong enough to restrain a 280 billion ton monster? To be perfectly honest, other than being able to defeat the ultimate lifeform, he doesn't do a lot to firmly justify scaling to this feat. Sonic is most likely just skilled enough to work his way around. Even if we do scale him to Shadow, Mario is shown comparable to characters like Wario or Donkey Kong. Wario was tough enough to survive the Shake King detonating in his face. Placing him at roughly moon level. Plus, Sonic shattering the stalactite was technically a shared feat with Metal Sonic, a robot specifically designed to surpass Sonic in every physical way. So his maximum attack potency is likely far less (depending on whether or not you scale him to Shadow, personally, I wouldn't). To be fair, this is all without Super Sonic. We'll talk about that later.
SPEED/REACTIONS/AGILITY
Okay, this isn't as obvious as it looks. Mario may be quick enough to maneuver as a bolt of electricity, meanwhile Sonic is quick enough to resist the gravitational force of a black hole. In terms of speed, they're both fairly similar. However, Sonic has multiple methods of increasing his speed. Light speed dash, cyan laser wisp, super sneakers, and Super/Hyper Sonic. Super Sonic is casually faster than light speed. Though, to be fair movement speed doesn't always help against combat speed. Here's a comparison between light speed and lightning speed:
Light: 670,000,000
Lightning: 220,000,000
Not exactly blitzing territory for Sonic, so their was a chance that Mario could land a serious blow on Sonic.
ARSENAL/ABILITIES/HAX
In terms of arsenal and weapons Sonic could counter a lot of them.
Super/Hyper Sonic = Rainbow Mario
Ring Time = Gold Mario
Invincibility = Rainbow Mario
Flame Shield > Pyrokinesis
Bubble Shield > F.L.U.D.D.
Mental resistance > Cappy
Jade Ghost Wisp = Vanish Cap/Boo Mushroom
However, Mario still has options that Sonic couldn't quite counter on his own.
- He could freeze time using his stopwatch
- He could restart the fight with prior knowledge with Earlier Times or the Retry Clock
- He could freeze Sonic solid as Ice Mario or Penguin Mario
- He could increase his size as Mega Mario.
- He can duplicate himself with the double cherry
- He can fly using his cape, wing cap, Raccoon Leaf, Bee Mushroom, Red Star, Propeller Mushroom, P-wing, and Tanooki Suit.
And to top it off, Mario has a set of gloves called the Bottomless gloves, which grants Mario unlimited usage of these power ups, whereas Sonic was only limited to what he had available to him.
INTELLIGENCE/EXPERIENCE/SKILL
Both Mario and Sonic have shown impressive skills, and both have defeated threats and beings that are far stronger than themselves, however, Mario is still technically smarter than Sonic and more experienced. Looking at Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, Sonic has been fighting Eggman since he was 11 years old. However, Mario is skilled enough to fight threats like Bowser, even as a child. Mario has also joined the military and likely has military grade training, and became the sensei of Jinx's dojo.
FINAL VERDICT
Sonic was obviously incredibly fast, but I believe that with Mario's strength, durability, arsenal, and experience. Mario would take the fight more often than not.
This is such an amazing animation. I loved the voices too!

I’m glad you enjoyed that. At first, I was going to make a follow up to this, but I’ve thought of another project that I’d much rather take on after this. Maybe I’ll revisit this storyline in the future though :)

Yooo, sonics fight pose at 0:27 is lit! Also that combo at 0:32 tho. (Also this animation is epic! I love how sonic and Mario aren’t portrayed as enemies, like most people do that and I wonder why do they have to be enemies? Plus I love how it was a friendly spar instead of some death battle where one dies, also the comment section tho, haven’t see 1 war or arguement, nice!

Bro This Is The Best And Most Realistic Mario And Sonic Sprite Battle I've Ever Seen! Not Only Because They Both Spared Each Other In The End, But Also Because This Might Not Be One Of Those Battles That Can Hurt A Lot (what i mean is that this fight can probably be a friendly battle or a training fight to test their own strengths and weaknesses). Another Things I Love About This Is That They Show Their Own Personalities And The Friendly Way They Communicate Each Other, Which Is A Thing They Canonically Do When They Meet Up! :)
I like this battle since they just finish the battle with a “good game.”
Finally an animation where Sonic doesn't kill Mario and vice versa every time I watch a Sprite battle between these two Mario ends up killing Sonic or Sonic ends up killing Mario and that's not how these characters do they don't just take somebody's life that's not them this is way more accurate to how the fight should be you did a great job by the way I like the voice for Sonic and Eggman also where did that Metal Sonic sprite come from?

I am so glad we have a sonic vs mario battle where their just sparing, no killing, and no wars in the comments on the battle, keep up the great animation.
This is honestly the best Mario vs Sonic fight in my Opinion.

I also loved the animation.
But I felt like the fight was one sided.
Sonic almost used him as a punching bag.
I'm not mad and I don't want to start a war but honestly I think Mario could have done more than that.

Im A Mario Fanboy, But Ive Always Known That Sonic Would usually Win Sprite Animation Fights *Unless The Uploader Is Biased* So Its Nice To See Sonic Giving Mario A Hand At The End, And Them Ending As Friendly Rivals Instead Of Sonic Teleporting Mario Into The Sun, Or Spindashing Him To Death, Or Something Else That Has To Do With Death. Also Great Animation!

My favorite part is that they planned this fight based on how Sonic acts when Mario shows up. It feels more human than Mario folding him into a beach chair and smacking him because Sonic was doing a little tease.
Realistically they'd be buds and would not kill each other. Nice animation!
