Just an FYI, performance is being bottlenecked by the iGPU in the i5. Laptops comes pre-equipped with Optimus enabled, which uses the iGPU as a bridge for the dedicated graphics. That's why you're seeing the 15-20% usage metric. Disabling this feature can boost performance quite significantly, as the CPU now has full access to the 4050.
came here to see if anyone had already brought this up, good call bubbles! like to add there's a good chance the usb-c port bypasses the igpu & goes straight to the 4050, so hooking it up to an external monitor would also likely eliminate that bottleneck.
I own this. Not a bad machine - it played Dead Island 2 well (up to 120 fps at 1080p), Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and almost every indie game at 144 fps. I'm looking forward to seeing how it handles Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3.

The $700 price tag is the sole reason I picked this up. Its sooo much more quiet than my alienware 2018 m15, and it doesn't get nearly as hot. my only gripe it that they didn't add the second m.2 port next to the wifi card. When you open it up you can see the labeled blank space for the slot with holes and all.
Microcenter has an i5 11th gen w 16gig ram rtx3050 512ssd for $399. That would be a great budget laptop. Would like to see toasty boys review that laptop.
For a computer with a 4050, 4060 or even a 4070 in some cases I still think a gaming laptop is better value than bulding your own pc I got my gaming laptop with a 1660ti with a ryzen 7 3750h back in 2020 for 850 dollars and I saved about 350 dollars by buying a laptop instead of building my own pc with the same parts the difference in performance was about 15% worse than the pc in games but I got a monitor 3 years later and I got a nice fps boost so the difference is about 7-8% atm, super happy with it, for mid range gaming an asus tuf 16 or an acer nitro is where the real value is atm .
The only problem is if your laptop has a decent cooling system and if it is serviceable easily for repasting and new thermal strips or not. If you remove the bottom cover and the heatsink is right there ready to come out. Then good. If you have to remove 30 screws, the keyboard, screen and motherboard and the heatsink is sandwiched in the middle, its a bad time. (I'm looking at you Alienware) I think a desktop is always a better deal for performance than a laptop. Especially used the desktop usually has life in it, and the laptop can have one blown mosfet and you have to junk everything but the ram sticks and SSD. During the shortages you could actually get laptops though 🤷♂️
never have i ever heard someone say buying a laptop is better value than building your own pc, because it is NOT true. for 1 thousand dollars you can get a desktop with much better performance.
Sure the laptop was a decent value at that time but once your laptop is outdated that's all she wrote. If you had a 1660ti in a desktop and you want to upgrade to a 3060ti you can no problem for $300 bucks. Whereas you'd have to get an entire new laptop unless you wanted to go with an Egpu which is VERY expensive.

And if by "Future proof" you mean midrange then it's no longer future proof.
Best practice would involve disconnecting the battery from the motherboard before disconnection or removal of any other hardware. Usually not a big deal, but should avoid touching the pins on the ram stick.
Many people hate gaming laptops, but as a former college student, a gaming laptop isn't a horrible way to go when you don't have the money for two computers and need something portable. Definitely recommend, but don't expect you'll see the numbers that toms hardware will lead you to expect. Cooling will almost always be an issue.
Re iGPU. Cheap/Budget laptops (read 95% of laptops) the screen is ONLY connected to the iGPU and the video card transfers the frames over the PCIe bus to display them on the internal screen. If the HDMI port is direct connected you can get a monitor with the same resolution and run 2 tests to see the performance you are giving up with this setup. If you get a proper serious gaming laptop it will not even show any iGPU, or it will have a mode in BIOS where you can switch it to dedicated only and there is a switch on the motherboard to send the video to the screen from the graohics chip.
low wattage limit makes a bad laptop around 105-120 watts which wont do well in many things and only having one fan could possibly lead to thermal problems.
Micro center has a gateway laptop for $399. I5 11400h with 4gb 3050. 16gb of on board ram. On low settings and dlss maxed, I’m avg 90 fps on warzone 2. It will bounce around 80-103fps. Buts steady around 90. Today is most likely the last day of the sale. The monitor on the laptop is 120hz.

This can run Starfield. It defaults to 1080p low and automatically turns DLSS and CAS on when you first play it. I've only got to New Atlantis, hitting around 60 fps with upscaling. Temps of 80°C, 99% gpu usage.

Wow this 4000 GPU's are a beast, cant believe it can run 80+ fps in WZ2. unlike my i5 10300h and 3060 can't stay on 60 for long sometimes it dips on 50s from time to time and I need to put it in max fan just to cool my laptop plus its only 8gb ddr5 single stick. All these budget laptops lack a micro SD card. 512gb isn't enough you can fill it with 2 games. That's another 30 for ram and 150 for 2tb SSD making it close to 200 dollars on upgrades which may defeat the purpose of these being "budget " systems
120 watts should not be enough. i do not recommend. when its at maximum performance it could lose power while charging at the same time. the rtx 4050 alone draws up to 105 watts.
got my omen laptop for 575 better specs with a 13420h and 4050 for cheaper and 16 gigs of 5200 ram and a 230 watt charger msi quality is also an issue most of the time with previous laptops they usually have bad hinges.

Probably wouldn’t handle starfeild that well… the 4070ti gets about 60 fps average at ultra 1080p

Tbh for $700 this gaming laptop is a steal. Im getting one as soon as i save up my money for one but i am still happy with my 2018 Dell G7 7588.

the 4000 series cards are pretty power efficent. you don't need more power than given for this pc

I would go with the 12700f and 4060ti. Much better gaming performance, you likely won’t notice the difference between 12700f and 13700f in gaming.

120 watts should not be enough. i do not recommend. when its at maximum performance it could lose power while charging at the same time. the rtx 4050 alone draws up to 105 watts.

The igpu basically bottlenecked the dgpu performance
got my omen laptop for 575 better specs with a 13420h and 4050 for cheaper and 16 gigs of 5200 ram and a 230 watt charger msi quality is also an issue most of the time with previous laptops they usually have bad hinges.
